i think what everyone is missing about sir marc's situation is just how inevitable this all was. from the very beginning, in those one off episodes, we see his tenacity and his determination to become a knight. we also see his proclivity - no matter how hypocritical it is, as a disabled man - for buying into the citadels bigotry when he expresses his disbelief at a woman being knighted. but thats because as much as he is marked by otherness by the citadel, he denies the concept that he could ever be a member of a stigmatized class - he sees himself as a potential and worthy knight that just had the chance taken from him unfairly, and the injustice, in his mind, isnt that the disabled (or women, or monsters, or queer ppl) are being oppressed, its that hes being denied his place among those in power causing that oppression. because he wholeheartedly believes in the citadels and the knights principles that hell become a knight no matter what.
and he does it! he doesnt care if he has to run the gauntlet a hundred times more than everyone else, he will grit his teeth at being called a salamander as much as it takes until he gets accepted into the boys club, into the inner circle of respected and and exclusive knightly bros. and he succeeds! he succeeds, and he doesnt care who else gets hurt, who gets attacked or marginalized, who else gets called a salamander - as long as it isnt him anymore, of course
his character arc is such a satisfying - if difficult to witness - example of someone being successfully radicalized by an extremist government. marc is your funny older brother who watches family guy whose jokes are starting to get more and more uncomfortable. marc is the guy at school who is constantly trying to pipe up from outside a ring of jocks, aspiring to be included. marc believes in respectability politics as much as it might fail him - until it doesnt, and then its his brother and his sister and her monstrous familys fault for not walking the line. marc is a cop because he wants the power and the status and the privilege of getting to wield it over others, now that he isnt one of the others anymore.
marcs gone absolutely full pig, and its a delicious act of good storytelling. lets just hope it doesnt bite him in the ass
