Segregation - Tumblr Posts

New York City, which assigns children to schools based on geographic zones, is one of the most segregated school systems in the U.S.

“we’re not racist but we’d rather have our children in an overcrowded school than one with a few black children”

After Spending The Better Part Of June And July Taking Hundreds Of Photographs Throughout Chicago's South

After spending the better part of June and July taking hundreds of photographs throughout Chicago's south side, I launched the second half of The Other Side project in late July. The idea was to narrow down, edit, and print the south side photos (which amounted to 313) and then place them on the north side. The placement would be determined by Chicago's systematic address system with an image of 3500 S. Halsted placed at 3500 N. Halsted and so on. I learned so much about the south side by exploring it for this project. Though I can't pretend to understand the lives of those who live on there, I understand now just how many misconceptions and assumptions I'd had about their neighborhoods before seeing things for myself. Warnings from roommates, friends, and the press had caused me to paint the south side as largely poor and dangerous. However, much of it proved to be, at least on the surface, perfectly safe. Middle class areas abounded and even poorer areas were never totally impoverished. Even amongst hardship, people seemed to be striving hard to keep their lives together and make things work.  The idea that the majority of Chicagoans ignore and never experience the deep beauty, suffering, and humanity of the city’s south side has always unsettled me. So, with this second phase of the project, I was excited to insert the south side into the everyday lives of north side Chicagoans. I started out by placing 60 of the photographs throughout Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Edgewater, Uptown, and nearby neighborhoods. From those placements, I've begun creating diptychs between the north and south side locations. The first six are above.  To see other south side photos click here.

The Big Ugly Bay Area

Coming from Ohio, I was taken aback by two things. First, people in the grocery line discuss politics often and loudly, contrary to the keep-your-vote-to-yourself custom of my homeland. I did not clearly understand the stereotype of the obnoxious liberal pontificator until I saw people actively moving away from such person in the train, so it may be surmised that I'm not the only one who reckons this poor form. Still, it is curiously common here considering the state is about as predictable as tap water when it comes to voting records. The second and really most off-putting thing that I've come by is the sexual harassment. I myself was cat-called or had some discriminatory anti-gay remarks thrown my way over the last couple days. I'm not unused to that but I was taken aback by a scene I saw coming out of the rail system this afternoon. A young man was following a woman who was busy in the process of putting her headphones back in. He had clearly already struck out but followed after her persisting anyway, closing with "Don't pass me by, I'm a real good one, not just a real one!" I believe that the young woman caught the speechless look on my face and continued to tell him "no" and that "she was fine" further three times that I saw (note that I came into this interaction late) and crossed the street behind me with this guy still persisting. He did eventually take the hint, but it was weird for me because I've never before seen- though I have certainly read about- this kind of thing. My initial thought was "a real good one would have laid off after the first no." But as I jogged past the girl to cross the street before the timer went out, it occurred to me that just as I would likely get harassed later on in the day, she too was heading in the same direction and a wide variety of "real good ones" no doubt lurked around every corner here. As I jogged past she seemed to noticeably recoil a bit and that's understandable. She handled herself as well as could be expected and I imagine that that took something out of her that will stop her wanting to be within more than two meters of a dude for a minute. I thought all of this in the moments in which I jogged by and I had wanted to say "I'm gay, relax, do you wanna walk a couple blocks with me?" but it was clear that only another woman was trustworthy at that moment. That was not the last time I saw this kind of thing today. I saw a similar exchange as I got off the train back in Oakland. I figure if I go out for a late dinner I will see it again. It's just common place here. I'm not sure if it happens like this in Columbus and I'm just missing it but there was something about that girl, the way she took the minor trauma as a normal occurrence, that leaves me with a sense of disquiet.

The Hand(s) From Above The Heavens Is Not Raced, Cultured, Segregated, Hatred, Gendered And Nationalistic

The Hand(s) from above the heavens is not raced, cultured, segregated, hatred, gendered and nationalistic like the hands below on the earth.

Indeed, that which is above is not the same as that which is below: vice versa.

No matter how "diverse" the parties of the Supreme Court become (e.g., with diverse in race, gender, religion, and sexual preferences,) segregation can't seem to cease from it.

Her life's is flipped upside down with a murder, a man, and the prohibition.

One of the most interesting things that I’ve gotten to learn about my paw paw is that he used to be in the National Guard and he helped escort the Little Rock Nine into Little Rock Central High School. I found this out back junior high (intermediate when I went) when I had to do an interview of one of my grandparents who lived through the 50’s for my history class.
