Stag Beetle - Tumblr Posts

Day 4 of posting cute critters we found on a field trip:

Stag beetles! Female is on the left and male posing like a queen is on the right. These beetles are big, but very slow and more or less harmless. They can give you a painful pinch, but only if you’re dumb enough to put your finger between their mandibles. I’ve been playing with these bugs all the time when I was a kid and they never bit me, but their little claws can scratch you a bit in my experience. These beetles have a very short lifespan of just few months in their adult stage. As larvae, they live in rotting wood and as adults they feed only on sweet plant juices. The adults have just one mission: to breed. Males fight each other with those huge mandibles and when they mate with a female, they die. Females live a little bit longer until they lay eggs and then they die. So often, you can find HUNDREDS of stag beetle corpses all over the forest floor. Some people inevitably call the animal protection services because they freak out by it, but it’s completely normal. We found this super cool corpse that ants ate most of, but they left the hard head. Absolutely metal!

I want to get a tattoo of one of these sweet little fellows to honour the one I had as a pet during my childhood, but I'm terrified of needles.

My (bfdi) Seven biblically accurate gijinka. I'm not sure about the colors of the outfit, I wasn't even sure if I was going to post this one because of the colors

Moving on, they're a sort of biblically accurate angel, fallen angel type of thing, yet also a stag beetle (since Seven's an algebrALIEN that's why their horns don't match real stag beetles) At first I wanted to give them a full on pilot outfit, but I didn't fully commit to that idea, also I wanted to make Seven have eyes on their wings to be more eldritch/biblically accurate looking but I didn't do that for this piece. If they got even more eldritch like when trying to scare/intimidate someone or when mad/irritated the eyes would appear though, but it's very hard to get that out of Seven.

HE CAN SQUEAK. HE SQUEAKED. I HAD TO PICK HIM UP AND I ACIDENTLY TOUCHED UNDER HIS THORAX (the long part of his body, aka his butt. I didn't squeeze don't worry) AND HE SQUEAKED I FEEL BAD. I did find put what kind of beetle he is, correct me if I am wrong, Lucanid Stage Beetle(as seen in ss and photo) but he's just a sweetie. He hasn't pinched me at all! I keep him well fed and I will be getting him a larger incloser filled with everything from his natural habitat(pine tree forest, atleast that's where I found him) I make sure his soil is nicely moist and not very dry. I don't keep it too moist though. He is well, he loves to climb up my arm. I tried to let him crawl on the ground(my room so no one would squish or injure him) but he didn't want none of it. Sorry my desk is so messy by the way.
