Finally, someone said it. Also, blaming only Enji for what Rei did to Shouto is unfair. I’ve seen stories of mothers losing it because of mental illness exacerbated by father’s abuse and killing the kids, and guess what? They still go to prison or get locked up in a mental facility! At the end of the day, you hurt your child, and you need to be isolated so you don’t do it again. The way Enji spoke about “damaging his masterpiece” was shitty, but ultimately, he did protect his children from being randomly attacked by their own mother, and she needed the treatment.

Also, the thing that never gets brought up is, Enji lost his dad BEFORE he went to UA, so when he was middle school age at most. There’s never a mention of a mother, so she may not have been in the picture. Rei had two parents when they married. Enji was 22, no parent was present with him during marriage negotiations, so he may have had no mother or any other parental figure. Did he even know what a normal family looked like, or how to be a parent? Did he have anyone at all to guide him? Or was he just a young adult with a dangerous job, metal illness and trauma, too much money, and early fame who had no idea what he was doing?

Haven’t read Mha in a long time so correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think Dabi was the victim here. Of all his siblings, Dabi got special treatment and there was no reason for him to have a grudge against them. Sure, he could harbor hatred in general for having a self destructive quirk but the dislike for his family? It simply doesn’t make sense.

And while we’re on the subject of the Todoroki family, Endeavor is an abuser but he did not rape Rei. They had an ARRANGED marriage, not a forced marriage. There’s been zero evidence to suggest it was a forced marriage. We only know Rei started having mental problems after Endeavor’s abuse, not because of the marriage.

Another problem I bring up because I saw this recently is how Dabi charged at Shoto when he was young. While it was clear they needed to take him to a professional, I would say this is most likely a cultural thing. It’s taboo to speak of mental health issues in modern day Japan and most other places in the world. I think that’s the reason why Endeavor and Rei didn’t give their son other help before he turned out like he did.

Overall, I think Endeavor’s reconciliation arc was good, coming from an ‘abused’ child. He didn’t forced himself on it, simply giving his apologies and opening his heart to them again. He saw the destruction that happened and asked for their forgiveness. A lot of people have a hard time separating his character from their own abusers which results in them disliking him but I personally love it. I WISH something like that happened to me and I’m frankly shocked that a lot of people wish it didn’t happen. The Todoroki family deserves closure and the ability to CHOOSE what they want to happen. Whether they want their father in their life or don’t.

Shouto: My mom and dad are having arguments because my dad is both mentally ill and a breadwinner, and my mom is just mentally ill.

Enji: What the hell, Shouto?!

Rei: That’s not at ALL why we’re arguing!

Enji: Go to your room!

Shouto: They’re struggling a lot.

Touya: DAAAD

Enji: What now?

Touya: Shouto keeps calling me an idiot.

Enji: Well I hate to break it to you, darling, but he might be right.

Touya: What??

Enji: Most people your age have a job. Prople younger than your age have a job. You’re in a gang, and not even for money, just for shits and giggles. Your Hell Spider looks like shit, so training is also not where you shine. You could come home and have your very wealthy father pay for actual skin grafts and, you know, education, but instead you choose to run around shoeless and let your brother punch you until you burn yourself to ash. Does any of it sound smart to you?

Touya: Wow. A lot to think of.

Enji: Good. Think of it. Now, can I hang up? All for One is getting impatient.

Touya: Sure. Where was I? Oh. SHOUTOOOOOO!

Enji: Who the hell ate EVERYTHING in the fridge while Shouto and I were training?!

Natsuo: Not us.

Enji: Then who was it, Touya’s ghost?

Touya: (absolutely laying waste to the pantry after a three-year coma) 👀

Enji: I just went grocery shopping. You kids are killing me.

Fuyumi: Happy birthday, Dad, I love you, you’re the best dad I could ever ask for!

Enji: Sweetheart, I love you with all my heart and I’m very grateful. However, please tell me I’m the only man you apply these disturbingly low standards to.

Fuyumi: Um…

Enji: Like, there’s not already a piece of shit boyfriend who belongs in the trash because you have no idea what a normal relationship looks like?

Fuyumi: No, Dad, I was just being nice because it’s your birthday.

Enji: Oh thank fuck, at least one kid somehow turned out normal.

Touya: So…

Enji: Touya, you are not cutting my cake with Blueflame, stop asking!

Shouto: A face only a mother could love.

Touya: Yeah, cause she sure as heck ain’t loving yours.

Shouto: You’re so obsessed with Dad it’s pathetic.

Touya: You literally refused to use the entire left side of your body because it looked like him, and I’M obsessed?

Shouto: You’re an amateur, and your Prominence Burn sucks ass.

Touya: …you…

Enji: You’re both impressive in your own way, I love you equally, and I wish you’d stop hurting each other because neither of you deserves any more pain than you’ve already experienced.

Touya: What the fuck, dude?

Shouto: DAD??

Enji: Ahaha! I win at therapy! I’m the number one patient! No one can stop me!!! I HAVE CONQUERED MY MENTAL ILLNESS! TAKE THAT, PTSD!!!

Rei: All three of you need to be locked up. Like, right now.

Rei: Aw, who is that sexy snack- oh wait, ew, that’s just Enji from the back.

Enji: HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Shouto: Oh my god, divorced people humor is THE CRINGIEST.

I also like how Dabi thought everything stayed the same since he was sixteen. Shouto is still just Enji’s pet project with no will of his own, Enji is still a raging maniac only caring about his success, the rest of the fam is just putting up with this. Meanwhile Enji had a whole change of character, he and Shouto went through a renegotiation of their roles in their relationship, Shouto stood up for himself by refusing to communicate with Enji until he was respected, Shouto trained and developed his own moves (unlike Touya who just copied Enji’s). Shouto has his own life and goals that have little to do with Enji. Rei got out of the hospital and was able to motivate her husband and son to fight Touya. Natsuo recognized Touya’s past suffering, he’s no longer that annoyed kid who just wants to sleep. Fuyumi was never “just a girl who doesn’t understand.” For all his spying on his family, Touya saw only what he wanted to see. He has no idea who any of them are.

Touya: Oh, you think you’re funny? Make a joke.

Shouto: Dad’s attention.

Touya: I don’t get it.

Shouto: Of course you don’t 🤣

Touya: Son of a-

Shouto: …Endeavor?

Touya: Okay, you’re funny.

A lot of “you’s” and a lot of “he’s” in here. A lot of shifting the blame onto his child with the language he uses, both in the most recent flashbacks and in previous ones.

Obviously, there’s a reason Endeavor does this, whether consciously or not – he’s distancing the blame from himself by placing that burden on Touya. 

If only Touya didn’t have a defective quirk, Touya could’ve “smashed the ugliness in [his] heart” and made his father’s dream come true. If only Touya wasn’t born with his mother’s constitution, Endeavor wouldn’t have had to create more kids to find a new successor. If only Touya understood that he had to stop using his quirk, even though he was created solely to become a hero, but since that can’t happen now he has to look elsewhere for meaning in his existence?

As reprehensible as it is, it makes sense that Endeavor does this to justify his own actions. My main issue is that with the framing and prioritizing of his viewpoint, it runs the risk of readers inferring that Touya is to blame.

To be fair, everything in the chapter aside from Endeavor’s words show that he’s wrong and at fault, so it only takes a minimum level of critical thinking skills to see this. A doctors advises him to stop recklessly engineering his children, since it’s taboo and potentially dangerous to the child, but he has Natsuo and Shouto in spite of this. Rei expresses her reservations, since Touya has already caught on to what he’s doing and it doesn’t seem like she’s enthused to have more children, either. He disregards her concern and pressures her into it, anyway.

And it doesn’t matter what he said to Touya or how caring it sounded when all of his actions directly contradict this. If he cared for Touya, why not spend his free time with him, even if they can’t train anymore? Because he spent time with Touya not to bond with him as a son, but to train him as his legacy. If he was concerned for Touya’s safety, why did he have 2 more children, knowing they could be born with the same detrimental quirks? Because it was never to protect Touya, it was to replace the child who was supposed to be his successor.

Everything Endeavor did as a father taught Touya that he was not good enough and thus he was not worthy of his father’s attention. His language places the burden of that on his son and that’s how he internalized it a as a child. Telling Touya to stop without providing the unconditional love he’s vying for is useless and shows a blatant lack of awareness for his child’s needs. Endeavor created an environment where he pays attention to his kids based on their ability to be a hero that could surpass All Might – no amount of talk was going to convince Touya to cease his self-harming behavior unless Endeavor changed his behavior as a parent first.

Now compare the more recent flashbacks to the last one listed above, which is from Shouto’s perspective. There’s no denying the way Endeavor treats his children as objects for his own gain is wrong when he makes this remark about Touya while he’s literally beating down his five-year-old. And he does this for the same reason he abandoned his firstborn. The point of this scene is to show that Endeavor holds his ambition above all else — even his family.

And there’s no issue per se with giving nuance to his character. He should have regrets and he should be remorseful for what he’s done, but that doesn’t automatically mean he’s deserving of forgiveness or sympathy. 

The problem is when this “nuance” is prioritized above the not-so-subtle and far more important suffering that his victims endured, and are still enduring, particularly in the case of Dabi. And it shouldn’t be obscuring the unequivocal truth here, which is this: Touya’s self-harming tendencies and inability to regulate his emotions as a child doesn’t negate the fact that he was neglected to the point of self-harm and his father is as culpable in that as he would be if he had burned his son with his own flames.

Dabi: Hey Endeavor, I randomly decided to show up to your house to pick a fight with you.

Endeavor: Not now, Touya.

Dabi: Whadayamean not now?! I’m here. I’m fighting you.

Endeavor: I was hit with a truth-telling quirk. You don’t wanna be here.

Dabi: Oh please. What, are you gonna tell me you’re disappointed?

Endeavor: I AM disappointed!

Dabi: Here we go.

Endeavor: …in myself for not knowing your favorite food!

Dabi: The fuck?

Endeavor: You probably have so little joy in your life, and all I do is make it worse by existing.

Dabi: Shut the-

Endeavor: I know I’m supposed to call the police, but I really don’t want to. I actually rather wish you stayed.

Dabi: THE FUCK?

Endeavor: You look hurt. And hungry. And sleepy. I feel like it’s my duty to correct these things.

Dabi: Oh my god, this quirk is a nightmare.

Endeavor: I know!! I can’t stop!! I already told Hawks I don’t mind him tagging along all the time, and it only got worse from there!

Dabi: Holy shit.

Endeavor: HELP!

Fuyumi’s dating Mirko, a hero, who has beef with Dabi (more like she’s trying to arrest him for terrorism but beef)
