Anne’s left hand flattens for a moment against the bottom of her bodice before shakily smoothing it down. She slowly lets go of Fatesworth’s wrist, clearing her throat and taking a step back from both the woman and the door. (Anne can only hope that left hand, which had strayed for her hidden knife, remained unremarked. She’d decided against taking it out, after all.)

“I’ll take ye at it, then,” Anne agrees, nodding jerkily. It feels…uncomfortable, letting the strange and somewhat estranged Miss Fatesworth go at only her word, but…what other option is there? A repeat of Charleston? She swallows thickly against the thought.

She reaches up and tucks the necklace away again, two simple gold bands on a thin leather chain that disappears beneath the neckline of her dress once more. No one is supposed to know about this—certainly not about this much of it. Even Fatesworth knowing is…luck, fate, happenstance. Anne caught in a moment of reflection, privacy broken purely by accident.

So. Fatesworth’s sworn in her reputation not to speak of the rings. Their obvious implication. Anne’s cheeks faintly burn before she nods at the door.

“Go on, then.” The stupid posh accident has never been so hard to mimic before. “On your reputation, yeou’ve seen nothing. So we’ve nothing to discuss.” Fuck. Hopefully she doesn’t notice. Doesn’t press. Doesn’t question. Just…fucks off. Or rewinds time.
