DUM-E APPRECIATION HEBDOMAD

For today’s Rec day of the Hebdomad organized by the @winterirondiscord:

Anima by Arboreal Bucky had always been able to hear the voices of the things around him. DUM-E is such an absolute sweetheart in this, trying to take care of Tony. And I love how he’s the one that gets Bucky and Tony to meet, it’s so incredibly adorable.

Best Bot by journeythroughtherain DUM-E likes seeing his creator happy, and this new person in the lab seems to make it happen. He's got a new mission now: Making sure this new person sticks around. It took actual, physical effort not to squee when reading this. DUM-E is, indeed, the best bot.

The Things You Do (To Yourself)

“What the hell was that for?” Tony snapped, the voicestarting in the modulation of Iron Man, and ending with the man himselfsnapping up the face plate so he could give Bucky one of those patented I am smarter than you, soldier and don’t youforget it glare.

“I thought itwould be bad for team relations if you blew up,” Bucky responded.

“I had it undercontrol before you charged in like a bull in a china shop,” Tony said. He triedto gesture, but pulled up short as one hand was pinned down by an epic craptonof building.

“Disagree,” Buckysaid. “You might have been able to disarm the bomb, I’ve no doubt. But what youdidn’t see, because you were concentrating on the bomb, was the shitheelHydra-wanna-be skinhead alt-right asshole with the remote detonator.”

“What happened tohim,” Tony said, because he would never admit that Bucky might have been right.

“Explosion,” Buckysaid. “They’re big, they’re messy, they get everywhere. People should rememberthat before they stand kicking distance from the blast radius.”

“Your kickingdistance, or a normal person’s?”

“What do youthink?”

“So, blast radiusbeing what it is, how did I get here, here being, I’m assuming, somewhat under thebuilding we were trying to save. Which, also, assumption time again, we failed.”

Bucky had, infact, looked around a little. “Uh, no. We’re in the parking garage next door? Idon’t know if the other one sustained structural damage or not. Little busydown here.”

“And let me guess,we’re out of contact–”

“Yeah,” Buckysaid. “Pretty sure there was an EMP with that blast. Now, at least thearc-reactor doesn’t have a problem with that, but everything’s down. Suitdidn’t reboot–”

“Yeah, Friday’snot here,” Tony said. “So, we wait. They’ll dig us out.”

“I wouldn’t besurprised if Steve’s up there digging concrete slabs out with his fingernails.”

“Man could use a manicure,”Tony agreed. He hitched a breath. “Need to work on that EMP problem, it’s beenan iss–”

“You’re injured,”Bucky said, trying to keep it as neutral as possible.

“You dropped abuilding on me,” Tony protested, then made a pained sound. “Yes, dammit. Ithink my hand’s crushed. If I had Friday up, she could tell me for sure, andthen–”

“I know you have apharmaceutical suite on board,” Bucky said. “Is there anyway to manuallyactivate the painkillers?”

“Yeah,” Tony said.“But I don’t–”

“You do. Let mehelp you. Talk me through it, I know you can’t move much.”

“You got a hexwrench shoved up your ass, or–”

Bucky reached inhis belt pouch and pulled one out.

“How in the nameof fuck do you–”

“DUM-E swiped itfor me a few months ago, after that incident with the Wrecking Crew. I thoughtit might be good if someone knew how to get you out of your clothes. Now, tellme what to do.”

“Take me on a dateand bring me flowers, I’m easy,” Tony said. Then, nodding, “there’s a hiddenrelease manual just under the left armpit. You have to use the hex to unscrewtwo – yeah, right there.”

It took longerthan Bucky would have liked to get into the suit’s manual controls, but Tonytalked him through it. Finally, the chest piece was opened up. “Leave the rightarm there,” Tony said. “If I’m too far out, the injection system won’t work.”He tugged his right hand out of the suit. “Ta-da.”

“You keep amedical shunt set up–”

“It’s a modifiedPICC line,” Tony said. “Temporary-permanent. I have to replace it about once ayear, but–”

“The things you doto yourself to fight crime,” Bucky said, shaking his head.

“You’re one totalk, Message-in-a-bottle,” Tony said. “It’s efficient.”

“Okay. This one?”

Tony took a deepbreath. “Yeah, uh, dial it up a bit. Now that I’m out of the suit, I think– Ithink I have broken ribs.”

“You’re gonna goto sleep on me?” Bucky dialed in a double-dosage of pain meds and musclerelaxers.

“Yeah,” Tony said,“probably. You can hold my hand and sing me to sleep, if you want.”

“Oh, I want to,”Bucky said, coming around to sit by the side of the Iron Man suit. “Here, youcan put your head on my shoulder, probably more comfortable than this rock.”

“I dunno,” Tonysaid. “They don’t call you a brick wall for–” Tony took a breath, shallowerthat time, and then…

Fell asleep.

When the team dugthem out, nearly two hours later, Bucky was still holding Tony’s hand.

Two days later,when Tony woke up in medical–

“Hey,” he said,turning his head to see Bucky sitting there, sprawled in an uncomfortablechair. Their fingers were still linked. Or, quite probably, linked again. Tonyhad a cast on one arm, and bandages around his chest. A cannula in his nose.And another tube he didn’t even want to think about, going other places. Ug.Decathing was so uncomfortable. “What’s this?”

Bucky opened thosebeautiful eyes. 

“Flowers,” hesaid, voice hoarse, pointing to the table. “An’ if you’ll consider checkin’ youout of this dump as a date–”

“You’re aromantic,” Tony said. “I should have guessed.”

“Is that a yes?”

“That’s a yes.”

Good for him that he's finally found a Dom who could do just that, without expecting anything extra in return. (Besides, Bucky tells him that Tony is already everything he'd ever wanted, the sap). Manages to be both hot and sweet, with the love between the two of them being obvious.

Won't Let You Sink by iam93percentstardust Bucky doesn’t usually like to give Tony a bath after a scene. It’s not something that Tony really likes, not after Afghanistan, though even he agrees that it’s the best way for Bucky to clean a nonverbal, still down in subspace Tony. And Bucky just doesn’t like baths. But sometimes, Tony gets too filthy during a scene for just a simple washcloth and if he’s still down deep, Bucky gets too worried about asking him to stand for a shower so they end up taking a bath instead. Part 4 of a series that has Bucky and Tony growing into their relationship. So far, all of them have been really sweet, but this one I felt showed the aftercare the best.

Look At Me by nepenthe_writer Tony is tired after a long night and James helps take him out of his head and relax Okay I’ll be honest, I like the sweet ones, and this is another one where that sweetness shines through. I like how it’s clearly about James taking care of Tony.

He wasn’t sure how much of it was living with a team of superheroes, how much was the fact that he’d spent the last seventy years in the hands of an organization that was brainwashing and wiping him, and how much was something else entirely. The Dom knew he didn’t exactly have a full understanding of how this new world he’d been thrust into, or any world really, worked but something just seemed… off. It nagged at him, pulled at his attention like a splinter in his finger that was too small to find. I think they are absolutely adorable in this, and it's still one of my favorite stories. I especially like Bucky's stance - “Do you have any idea what an honor it is that you’d let me be your Dom when you don’t need one? It means you’re with my because you chose me. It means you think I’m worthy and that…that’s just indescribable.” Melts me every time.

You Know You Need Me by MizDiablo Tony Stark does not want a dom. Bucky does not want a sub. But wanting something and needing something are two very different things and getting kidnapped has never been a solution to anything. And Steve just wants Bucky to be happy. A somewhat different kind of getting together, and I like that they need each other in this. [NOTE: Stuckony]

Not Exactly What I Wanted by Tahlruil Tony has always been happy to piss off Alphas who try to control him - especially Howard Stark. Unfortunately he managed to push his father just a little too far... and the man arranged to have him auctioned off to the highest bidder. Now he's married to a guy he hardly knows, one that is too damn patient and too damn nice. There's no way that isn't an act, and Tony is resolved to be a little shit until he finds out the limits of his husband's fake personality. Though he's been back from the war for a while, Bucky has been left scarred by the experience. The most prominent one is the personality that came into being because of Hydra's torture and brainwashing attempts when he was captured. They were rescued before they became the Winter Soldier, but Winter is still very much sharing space in his head. Winter has never responded to anyone positively... until they met Tony at an auction Bucky had been dragged to by a former commanding officer. They are both captivated by the Omega and buy him despite their better judgement. This one has Tony and Bucky growing into their relationship - or, rather, Tony growing into it, because it did not start great (which wasn't Bucky's fault, but he doesn't know that). I really like their growing connection.

Empathic Responses by waterbird13 In a world that still considers alphas the protectors, betas the every-day masses to fill out the ranks, and omegas as homemakers and glorified objects, Tony Stark is born. Tony is born an omega in a world where that means he’s a homemaker, a provider, with limited opportunities and a lack of autonomy. Tony says fuck that, no matter what the rest of the world is telling him. As the Rogues return, Tony is left dealing with the world coming down around his ears. The Accords, Aliens, and, of course, the alpha who somehow just moved into his life. This one is rather more dark and bleak than I usually prefer to read, but I haven't regretted it. In the end it does work out, and a positive change is coming, and they are going to do better. And Bucky is right there supporting Tony in that.

Bucky notices his scent immediately. Omega. Exhaustion. Panic. He lets the shotgun sink. “You missed by half a mile.“ Bucky watches the shoulders slump, then wince as lightning brightens the sky, followed by an ear-splitting roll of thunder. The bundle in the man’s arms starts whimpering. “I think you should stay here.” This is extremely sweet, with Bucky helping Tony out in his time of need and Tony turning his life right the heck around and being awesome.

Barnes Family Motors, Inc. by phlintandsteel In a world where alphas legally own omegas, Bucky is just a small time mechanic from Brooklyn who gets lucky in a poker game. Tony is an omega whose life is fraught with abuse, until his luck suddenly takes a turn for the better. In the grand scheme of things they may only be able to make little differences in the lives of those around them, but that doesn't mean it's not worth making them. After all, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. One of my absolute favorites, where Bucky makes Tony's life a lot better, Tony makes Bucky's life a lot better, and together they make a lot of others' lives a lot better.

Beginning and the End by Shi_Toyu Tony Stark: Genius, Billionaire, Omega, Philanthopist, Youngest Member of the Avengers James "Bucky" Barnes: Soldier, Alpha, HYDRA Asset, Besotted Fool That about sums it up. It really does, and I LOVE it. There are so many things going on, and I adore every single one of them.

They’d first met at a shitty dive bar with horrible music and the scent of stale smoke on every chair Tony had sat on. Bucky - and Tony could hardly believe he was sleeping with a man who called himself Bucky - had not been the first man to talk to him at the bar, but he had been the first one to march over and tell Tony that he couldn’t monopolize the jukebox with AC/DC songs. One thing had led to another and several drinks later, they’d been exchanging handjobs in the bathroom. (Or Tony and Bucky have a friends with benefit relationship. There's fisting and a surprising amount of feelings for a story that's 99% porn) Interestingly enough, you just about forget about the background of it all (and the secrets) by just how hot it is. That fact also inspires me to think that, when it all comes out, they'll actually manage to deal with things, because it's very obvious they love each other very much.

“I take it back,” Tony calls out the open doorway, “this safe house is not well stocked, they forgot one very important thing.”

Bucky appears in the doorway a second later, looks around the small bedroom, and then fixes Tony with an unimpressed look.

“There’s only one bed,” Tony says slowly, in case Bucky somehow missed it, but Bucky just shrugs. And of course it’s not a problem for him, he’s not the one uselessly pining away like a character in an old timey romance novel.

“So you take it,” Bucky says, “I hardly sleep anyways.” Then he turns to leave, like that’s just the end of the conversation.

“That is not the end of this conversation!” Tony says, following him back out into the equally tiny living room.

Bucky Barnes is practically a walking, talking embodiment of bullshit.

It’s clear, from the moment he strolls into Tony’s life with a story so soaked in tragedy it should come with its own violin soundtrack. That's Tony's first thought when Steve, with his Boy Scout earnestness, introduces him to the 'new and reformed' man himself.

Tony's bullshit detector doesn't just ping; it goes into a fucking meltdown.

If the whole road trip idea reeks of Steve's star-spangled, idealistic nonsense, that's because it was, in fact, his suggestion. How did Steve put it? Bond, heal, fucking kumbaya their way across the country. Tony has no clue how he agreed to this. Must have blacked it out.

When Tony considers laying down the charm on Bucky Barnes around Steve, it's not with some grand plan in mind to actually be nicer. If anything, it serves the sole purpose of pissing Steve off. The problem is, when Tony makes this decision—this half-cocked, spur-of-the-moment resolution to dial up the harmless flirt offensive—he doesn't pause to consider the potential fallout. Honestly, not for a second does he entertain the thought that this could backfire so spectacularly, not just with Bucky, but with Winter too.
