Spy × Family Thoughts [Anime]

Obviously there are spoilers, but I'm also an anime-only fan for Spy x Family so nothing in the manga really. I've seen SOME stuff but not enough to know the context.

So. Thoughts. It's funny, it's a comedic slice of life kinda deal, but there's darker themes to, like uh.. The small flashes we get of.. people.. with Anya-- I'm pretty sure that it's going to take a darker turn at one point, I mean they can't hide that the dad's a Spy, the mom's an Assassin, and the child is a mind reader.

Eventually this will be let out, and who knows what could happen. Twilight will eventually have to leave once his mission is over, not to mention attachments are bad in the spy life and will lead to being put in hostage situations (Insert that one scene where Anya was captured once she accidentally did this message thing that sent 'TWILIGHT' or something like that). Anya had been saved of course because what child deserves to be used as a hostage y'know, but imagine that Twilight actually had attachments [i bet you he gets attached to this family]. Then people would use it against him, and honestly they're playing a dangerous game.

What happens when identities get uncovered, when secrets are told?

Shits gonna happen and honestly I dont think I'm prepared just yet. People might think Anya's a freak for being different, blah blah blah, you get the idea.

Not to mention that Yor's brother is a part of the secret police thing and that honestly there's just a lot of layers to this, and all I can really see is a LOT of hurt before the possible comfort.

I am hoping that this will eventually have a happy ending, but I can't be sure, and as much as a happy ending, I would say that it'd be better for a more realistic ending, but there is a mind reader here and a lot of comedic stuff that isn't exactly realistic and also causes problems to where I doubt they'll go down that route, especially since they've started the series off with fluff and comedy, and it probably wouldn't do well to start off so positive and end so negative, you know?

It can probably only go so far before delving into too much territory.

Anyway that's all I really have to say? At least I think so. If I got anything wrong, let me know, if you have any thoughts conflicting my own, feel free to share how you think it'll go.

Something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong. Obviously, Forger was cheating with some other woman while trapping Yor in an unwanted relationship. 

The sooner he put a stop to it, the better, Yuri decided. The longer this little charade went on, the more it would hurt Yor, and nobody else was going to step up. 

He’d come up with a plan. 

He was going to follow Forger to his office and catch him in the act after work. With enough incriminating photos, he could force Forger out of Yor’s life permanently.

i honestly do not know what yor's reaction would be, but i imagine that she took up such a violent and demanding job so yuri could live as peacefully as possible. so, when she finds out he's gone down an equally violent path, maybe she would blame herself for not keeping him safe.

i think there should come a point when yor has had enough of yuri's nagging about loid and says something like "HE MAKES ME HAPPY YURI"

after which point yuri slowly and begrudgingly begins to see the value loid has brought to yor's life, and even if he is still snippy and overprotective, he begins to open up the slightest bit. eventually during a 1:1 conversation he admits to loid that he's only overly critical bc he can't bear the thought of someone hurting the person who gave up everything for him, etc etc

and THAT is when loid feels real guilt for the first time. we already know from passing thoughts that he plans to leave the forgers after the mission is over, and sometimes he has his reservations and moments of 'i'm a hypocrite', but this is when he's truly like shit. Shit. I finally won yuri over but it was better when he hated me because i do not deserve to have this kid telling me that i am worth his sister because i'm not. he was right, i am just gonna hurt her all over again.

I constantly forget that WISE practically forced Teenage [Redacted] to become a spy when he was in a state of extreme vulnerability

Now I wonder what Yor's recruitment was like considering that she was in an even more vulnerable condition since she was younger than [Redacted] when she was recruited and had to take care of her little brother, a little boy/toddler.

I was thinking about Yor's cover for her assassin job and then I remembered this scene from chapter 2

And I had these two thought:

It's funny that everyone in that room thinks Yor slept with men for money and expects her husband to be disgusted and judge her upon finding out (expected at the time for a respected and educated man as Loid is perceived), but the irony is that between Loid and Yor, the one who actually had to sleep with people for his job is Loid himself (or well, Twilight) when he was doing his honeypot missions.

I have this little hc that Twilight's first missions were probably Honeypot as due to his looks and charm they would be easier for him considering he was a rookie and WISE thought that would be his forte.

I don't think he liked being used just for that, so he must have gone out of his way to show Handler and WISE his full potential and capabilities (The guy is as handsome as smart lmao) and that's how Agent Twilight was born.

By the way, I hadn't thought there was also training for that “type” of missions until I read this fic in which there is a flashback of Twilight training Nightfall (you have to read it btw, half of the fic is Nightfall being incredibly horny and the other half is Twilight being incredibly blind JSFKJJJK).

So yeah, Twilight's training must have been brutal, I honestly think the reason Nightfall seems to be more impulsive than Twilight is because I feel like he wasn't as strict and brutal with her as Handler was with him.

(Imagine that poor Twilight is more traumatized by the training than by the job itself 😭, which is why he wakes up overexcited when he dreams of his early years as a trainee).

It is very likely that Yor and Yuri's neighbors, as well as Camilla, would think the worst of Yor's work, so Yuri's great need to protect his sister stems from the fact that Lil Yuri had to listen to their neighbors constantly express themselves in horrible and derogatory ways about his beloved sister because “What kind of decent job can a girl who arrives home late at night or early in the morning have?"

Although Yor would be aware of that, she would not try to deny anything because for her it would be preferable that they think she is a prostitute than that she is a assassin, (besides she would be relieved that although her neighbors see her arrive at night, it is so dark that they can't see the blood), but Yuri seeing that his sister does nothing to clear her name would think that he has to be the one to defend her and protect her.

i know that loid is supposed to be good at everything, but just once i’d like to see him pathetically fail at something despite his earnest efforts. every time i go bowling i am consistently surprised at how difficult it is.

One little thing I love about spy is that when two characters are biologically related, Endo knows how to draw them physically similar. They don't all look the same even though it's the same style of drawing

"The incest part of spy x family ruins it" SHUT UP, your wrong, Yuri Briar is a complex character and to put it as a "weird incest thing" is wrong.

First, Yuri has never implied he wanted any sexual relations with his sister, the most he has said is he loves her and wants to marry her, and that isnt weird if you put in the context that Yuri and Yor are both children who suffered from the war. They didnt have parents to take care of them, that burden was put onto Yor as the older sibling. Yuri looks up to her for that and wants to prove to Yor that he can protect them too. Yuri doesnt understand the complexities of love because he was never taught it, he loves his sister and wants to protect her and has gotten his feelings confused for wanting to marry her. "but hes so weird around loid" IN HIS CHILDHOOD IT WAS ONLY HIM AND HIS SISTER HE IS GOING TO HAVE TROUBLE TRUSTING OTHERS.

They grew up in a war, A WAR. Thats going to have a mental toll on your character, Yuri has taken this by wanting to protect who he loves. Yuri doesnt have anyone outside of Yor he is going to be confused on what his love means.

Loid has mentioned how he is jealous of Yors and Yuris relationship because its so close, and they have eachother to rely on, something Loid didnt get as a child. Loid doesnt see Yuri as a threat to him and Yor.

You can see how he grows through the story and accepts that Yor has found another person to trust and rely on and he doesnt have to carry that burden alone. He has slowly been letting go and giving Loid a chance to be there for Yor and Loid has proven he can and will be there for her, and yuri is grateful and even takes up tutoring Anya, it doesnt work out but he still tries to be supportive to his sister.

In conclusion Yuri briar did not ruin the plot of spy x family with a weird incest trope, if you look at the dialoge and think deeper in on the story, you can observe Yuris growth as a person.

So random so niche but one thing that always irks me about sxf is the way that no one took in Yor and Yuri after their parents died. I’m nitpicking but really it’s such an insane detail to me because it logically doesn’t make any send and I don’t know if it’s a cultural thing but I just cannot mentally imagine two children being left alone after their parents died. That don’t sit right with my West Indian soul like nah.

I get Twilight’s situation, both of parents died in a bombing that destroyed the entire city obviously there was a lot of chaos so it’s understandable that he got lost in the midst of it. Granted I still am baffled by the idea that no one saw this 6 year old child and said hm maybe I should look after him but whatever fine. Sure times of collective distress increases the sense of community in people but fine take win but Yor???

It’s never fully confirmed how their parents died (at least not to my memory) but we do know they weren’t homeless and that Yor knew people she could ask for advice and stuff and so my question why did no one help her? They lived in the forest sure but there were other people around they should have had some neighbors even with a good amount of distance! Why would they all watch this 12/13 year old girl with her 5/6 year old brother and just say best of luck to yah. Like no wonder she got groomed into a murderer where was the community? You couldn’t even bring them breakfast and lunch? No soup kitchen? What happened to Red Cross? Salvation Army? They had a house, they went to school, they did shopping, Yor fought bears, they were active participants in the society so why were they alone in a post war society?

What happened to aunts and uncles and grandparents and great aunts and great uncles and cousins and in-laws and godparents and neighbors and social workers and i dunno the police man like how did this happen?
