Will humanity ever be free of the influence of Edna Mode? Can any of us so much as consider the character design for a hero or villain without her manifesting in the room, fully aware of our sins?
Ooooooooh... you have triggered the thoughts and ideas
I love a character raised to be a weapon as much as the next guy. But what really gets me is a character raised to be a shield. Who can’t fathom being needed—or even being wanted— beyond keeping others safe. Who believe they are alive only to insure someone doesn’t die. no matter the cost. Characters who self-sacrifice not because they think they deserve it, but because no one else does deserve it, and it’s their job to protect.
Characters who’ve been told that’s why your important. Your worth something because this other person/ thing is important, and you are here solely to keep them safe.
Bonus points if it’s not a legitimate job they’ve been given. Maybe at one point it was, but now that they are free from it, they haven’t given up that mentality. No one is forcing or asking them to do this, but they need to. They need to in order to be deserving.
writers be like; anyone gonna write this story? and then not wait for an answer. and then not write it either

birdification beam!!

This is Charles. He wants to go on a journey around tumblr. could you show him around?
I second that, libby and all the free ebook resources you can access through your library card are awesome! I have a card with my local library for libby, and cards with the two neighboring regions for when I want to compare wait times for more popular ebooks.
Also, fun thing I discovered a while back, some libraries let you suggest books for them to buy, and if they approve it the library orders it in to add to their collection and puts the book on hold for you to read as soon as it gets there. So if they don't have a book you want they might be able to order it in or even get it sent over from a nearby library. Which is very cool to me and my non-existent book budget.
I'm almost 30 and still amazed you can just walk into a library and pull a book off a shelf and read it, don't even need to ask anyone, can just sit down and read book for free until closing time. There is nothing that free anywhere else that isn't serreptitiouly religious or requiring registration. that's how stuff should be. Libraries are so good
Update, twas a success.
The emotions have been successfully processed and I am once again mostly functional.
Gonna go sit in my grumpy little blanket cave and vent my emotions into a pillow.
Gonna go sit in my grumpy little blanket cave and vent my emotions into a pillow.
Deciding stuff it all I need a vibey epic fantasy wip for when my brain isn't working and I need an escape.
So far I have a mum friend capable cowgirl adventurer and her stray sunshine guy who's coming along for the ride because why not.
And just cause romance is hard and friendship is beautiful I've decided they are not going to have a romance subplot. So bestie/sibling closeness shenanigans commence!
Also I get horses and powers and stunning landscapes and interesting strangers and places and this is going to be a fun little braindump thing because why the heck not.
”I’m scared to write because what if the story fails” DO IT ANYWAY. EITHER IT WILL BE A SUCCESS OR YOU CAN TRY AGAIN BUT WRITE IT ANYWAY. DO IT CONFIDENTLY OR DO IT SCARED BUT BELIEVE IN YOURSELF YOU HAVE UNLIMITED ATTEMPTS TO GET IT RIGHT
Different things Peeta could say upon Gales return to twelve post epilogue (non serious/funny options only):
“It’s… Dale right?” “Gale” “Dale! Yep, that’s what I said”
“I’m sorry, I don’t have any change” “What-“ “there’s a soup kitchen down the road!”
“We do NOT need a new vacuum cleaner.” *slams front door*
“Do I know you from anywhere?” “It’s me. You know me.” “Don’t! Don’t tell me, just give me a sec” “Peeta…” “are you in adult entertainment?”
“I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times. Yes, I have heard of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ, and no, I do not wanna hear more about him! Goodbye!”
“You look a little big for a Boy Scout.”
(Image Gale shows up in a soldiers uniform or something) “I served my time, you’re not recruiting me into any damn army.”
“You’re too old to be mowing lawns for money, maybe it’s time for a real job?”
“Oh no, I didn’t know daycare could call the army on people!”
“You’re not the baby sitter…”

My book (dystopian-ish) is about a young woman raised to be perfect using her acting and observation skills to investigate the crime world. Naturally this starts when her gap year turned undercover military assignment leaves her investigating a guy her age with way too much trouble on his hands and no way out.
Attesa is just trying to earn her mother's love and approval by avoiding all vulnerability. The mission is a chance to prove herself and get away from the constant survalence for a few months.
Ethan is just trying to protect what's left of his family. (Mum and lil sister) Unfortunately he works for his dad's old "Boss" and is in way over his head safety wise. He's managing on the keep family safe front though, which is great!
But perhaps this new girl (surprise she's a military detective! Hence the casual stalking) investigating him and his family will be a way out. Regardless, not cooperating will cause far more trouble than it's worth if more important military powers look into his situation.
It's got undercover work, spy shenanigans, a black market and crime world with FAR too much freedom, no police or uncorrupt legal systems, and quite possibly some forced teamwork/fake dating as a cover story that leads into trusting someone to help them for the first time in....well....let's just say a long time.
Oh but it's not published. Sorry folks. I'm working it!
talk about your book!!!

reply to or reblog this post discussing your book even if it’s published or not! feel free to share anything you want about it. this is a safe space and a way to get an audience for your book!! reminder: there is no judgment here.
i’ll start!!
my debut novel, she knows is a dark thriller set in a rural british town where a serial killer is stalking the streets. sylvie garcia, the daughter of a medical examiner takes the investigation into her own hands after the police’s leads go cold. despite their beliefs, sylvie’s convinced the killer is a woman. she then enlists her friend group to aid her in the investigation. unknowingly, the murderer is her childhood best friend and her concealed longing. With an innocent facade, florence has deceived everyone including sylvie, who remains deeply attached to her despite the growing darkness around them even after the truth is revealed.
So I'm beta reading for someone right now and who was going to tell me it's this fun! I get to be the hype squad IN THE ACTUAL DOCUMENT!!
And it's a second draft so the only major notes I need to leave are for pacing/character arcs, which, HELLO that's my favorite part.
The story is already so good. I'm just loving being a tiny little part of someone else's writing journey and getting a behind the scenes look at their brilliance.
Agh this is the best!
Wondering if the fact I struggle to write found family despite really wanting to is because I haven't found mine irl yet.
Since I first heard about Sunrise on the Reaping, I keep remembering when Katniss is watching the 50th Quarter Quell, and she says that the scenery is so beautiful that even Haymitch, who has been scowling the whole time, can't help but smile. It gave me such a visceral feeling... Haymitch, 16, looking out on those butterfly fields where 47 people are to die, and they're beautiful. So beautiful.
I really hope that part stays in SotR
love the idea of the Batfamily getting stopped and searched in the family car on the way back to the Manor and everyone’s tense expecting Jason to be the one packing like twelve guns but it’s Alfred? Alfred is absolutely unbelievably strapped up to high heaven? And he somehow manages to talk to the cops out of arresting him or even giving him a ticket?
Bruce is just standing on the side of the road pinching the bridge of his nose. Jason is grinning so widely his face is about to rip. Alfred’s guns are all sitting on the hood of the car and there’s at least three there that Bruce remembers taking away and destroying. Dick is taking pictures on his phone to send to Barbara and trying not to laugh. Tim has Kon on speaker narrating it…
This is hella random, but I think the districts recycle clothing with each other. Or have style circulation within the districts.
The Capitol gets always the newest clothing and fabrics. I imagine their clothing being in them w modern svante grade, futurist styles. Something no ordinary person would wear regularly- what the normal citizens wear. However, I think the mega mega rich captions have a classical suit. Like the styles is is forever immortalised becuase that when Snow came into more power, and they too follow that trend of classism. Eve one has a slight 60s space time cypher-galactic vibe. Like- all of them would wear some stupid design clothing to go get their shopping
D1 has a 20s-sequel demure. Like the capitol, I imagine they have that flair about them that holds a classical look. I imagine more of the practical 1920s look, with the outlandish refinements to it. Like the embroidery or the embellishment of the flapper looks. It’s higher class and lots nicer than the other districts clothing.
D2 has a Greco-Roman architectural design, but with the 40s war era inspired clothing. Again, an older recycles from Capitol and d2, yet, it’s far more functional it carries the agenda of practicality and functionalism, but holding the past of war/recolution. Perhaps a very Soviet-style militaria look. Yet, it’s hold all these fold and tapestry of Greco Roman clothing. The linen fabrics for the east movement for masonry, the deep red and amour on the school uniforms or peacekeepers. The miners have the truer 40s labour workers styles, uniform is rich red and heavy grays.
D3 definitely has an 80-90s vibe. The rise of technology, the innovate of knowledge. It’s grungier and dirtier look. It’s poor business casual that has dark clothing and patches.
D4 has a 70s vibe for the beach. Linen, cotton, crochet knots. The have laces and wool from their district’s ability for knot tying and the light weight fabric to cool then down from the heat. It’s more of the bohemian look than the disco vibe, but very muted and neutral. It has reds and blues and greens and white, n black from natural dyes from shells and animals near them. They don’t have flower patterns for clothing, but their crochet work is stunning. Anything and everything they can knit and make. All their warm clothing is mostly handmade, since most people can knit to a decent degree. It’s very beach vibes. I think they too would have an Ancient Greek inspiration with their clothing. But more of the draping and float aspect than the military style of d2.
D5 has a real 30-40s war time effort style. Is very manufacturing, with alsmost everyone watching pants and yay. It’s the long sleeves and protective clothing that’s subtle embedded in the styles. I don’t know much about abt d5, but this is the idea.
D6 is working class 1910-20s. It’s the ugly side of labour with leather pants to protect them from metal scratches and burns. Cotten clothing for east cleaning and all dark to hide the paints and grease. Everyone has rubber shoes or rubber protective equipments.
D7 has a 90s look. Mainly becuase of the flannel design and the denim, but I do agree they would have a slight 00s undertone with the straight cuts and the baggieness jn clothing. They dress Canadian 70s I think, if I knew what that meant
D8 is really into the 1900s industrial era style. The poor man working class style with modern look fitting a depression era fit.
D9 has a working class poor 50s look. It’s the thick denim and the plain dresses. The women and men wear lots of leather boots and shoes to limit the cuts and bits on their legs from the bugs founded in the grain
D10 has the modern day cowboy sorta style. It doesn’t really fit a specific time era, buts a collection of different times that don’t have a specific date so to it. I think a lot of people have leather jackets and shoes and sometimes patches in pants from the tanning/animal business. A modern, dirty poor cowboy farmer look from the Great Depression sorta style (IM DESPERATELY TRYING TI SAY THIS NICELY). I think they would wear lots of picnic style picese with some embroidered emblems for slightly rusher families.
D11 has the working farmer from the 69s look mixed with the lower class 50s style. It’s the corduroy pants and the light weight shorts to prevent overheating in the sun. They have longer socks and clothing that is really worn down. Warm clothings is homemade knitted wear that’s been handed down and is slightly girly mattered.
D12 is what I think they would dress like in the Great Depression. They have a nicer pieces from the 30s, with tailed suits and flattering pieces, the once classic pieces from the Capitol that have been finally handed down. Yet, the everyday person clothing looks like the fit in the ww2 everyday clothing. Clothing is a handed down of a hand-down. Make by either oneself or a preservation of a beautiful pieces only every worn for a terrible day. I think their ‘nicest clothing’ are more the 40-50s vibe. It really shows that they are behind all the districts.
I love this
Also let's not underestimate how many people might relate to the parts that feel like a self insert. They are part of our humanity. Let them be seen sometimes. Let others see and realise they are not alone.
"The rest came from you too, didn't it? You're carving up your soul to make this story; don't be ashamed you're leaving part of it a little more intact."
This ^
Writing is often a form of expression and way to explore ideas. So let's enjoy it and stop worring if little peices of yourself slip through into your art. It's still beautiful. In fact it can be better for it.
Original Fiction writers be like "Is this a self insert? Am I writing a self insert? Am I committing writing's greatest sin?"
First off, self-inserts aren't even in the top ten sins of writing. Unless you really drop the ball with it, it's not even as bad as forgetting Oxie. Take a note from the fanfic book and don't worry about it.
Second of all, as an original fiction writer you're not "inserting" anything into anything. The rest of this came from you too, didn't it? You're carving up your soul to make this story; don't be ashamed you're leaving part of it a little more intact.
While I'm at it don't be afraid to write in other people either. Fen has a Chesterton analog in his book, and the way he's explained it it's not very subtle either. Write in your mom. No one will notice, and the ones who do won't mind.
The first rule of dealing with people is: everybody wants to be a good person. Even your shitty boss.
The second rule of dealing with people is: everyone fails at being a good person. Even you. Even your best friend.
I think the rest flow from these.
The Hunger Games has the FUNNIEST arranged marriage of all time btw. Katniss realizes she'll have to marry Peeta and she's obviously upset so Haymitch tries to comfort her by saying "you could do a lot worse" and Katniss is like "well DUH of course I could do worse than Peeta he's the best & handsomest person on the face of the planet but that's not the POINT I want to be able to choose for MYSELF". Then she goes and chooses Peeta anyway lol. Comedy gold I tell you
Me when I need a reminder self worth isn't tied to achievements and there can still be hope/love even in the hard times: I'm going to write a book where the characters learn this. That'll be a great way to explore this in more depth.
Me when I am sad and go to write but I have to start at the beginning and the characters have barely started their arcs so they refuse to let themselves be happy cause "they don't deserve it": oh. This is really sad and I don't wanna.
I guess thats the downside to having my characters start the story in dire need of growth. Sigh.
