Tw Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms

tw unhealthy coping mechanisms

i love posting motivational quotes and talking about healthy ways to find balance in life and school. but the truth is that my routine looks more like:

neglecting basic needs while working on the assignment because i procrastinated too much

submit the aforementioned assignment

rotting in my bed until further notice

Vindica Te Tibi And What We Should Learn From An Old Stoic Like Seneca
Vindica Te Tibi And What We Should Learn From An Old Stoic Like Seneca
Vindica Te Tibi And What We Should Learn From An Old Stoic Like Seneca

โ€œ vindica te tibi โ€ž โ€“ and what we should learn from an old stoic like Seneca

if you have ever studied latin or philosophy, you will certainly have stumbled upon Seneca, a very problematic dude who, however, occasionally said the right things.

โ€œ vindica te tibi โ€ž is my all-time-favorite latin quote, it litterally means โ€œ vindicate yourself for yourself โ€ž, but we can translate it better with โ€œ take control of yourself โ€ž. in order to deeply understand this statement, let's take a look at stoic philosophy.

stoicism [ย from latin stลicus and ancient greek ฮฃฯ„ฯ‰ฯŠฮบฯŒฯ‚ ( stลรฏkรณs ) ]: itโ€™s a philosophy designed to make us more resilient, happier, more virtuous and more wise and โ€“ as a result โ€“ better people, better parents and better professionals.ย it is a philosophical and spiritual current with a rational (human rationality is the basis of everything), pantheistic (everything is God, God is everywere, the whole universe is God), deterministic (nothing happens by chance but everything is regulated by precise logical laws), and dogmatic (all that is, as being, is real and concrete) imprint, with a strong ethical and tendentially optimistic orientation. stoicism was founded in Athens around 300 bc by Zeno of Citium and later it was introduced to rome by Panaetius of Rhodes in the 2nd century bc. stoicism is a tool in the pursuit of self-mastery, perseverance, and wisdom: something one uses to live a great life, rather than some esoteric field of academic inquiry. [ย sources wikipedia and dailystoic ]

Seneca was a stoic philosopher who lived in rome in the 1st century ad, and he wrote this quote in a letter addressed to Lucilus, a friend of his much younger than him, interested in philosophy and politics.

in this letter ( the first of his epistolary ) he deals with the theme of time and the brevity of life, a subject that he would often return to in many of his works. basically Seneca claims that life isn't actually that short, as the majority of people complain, we're just very good at waste our time beign slaves of something, instead of using it wisley. there are many ways people waste their time, he calls them " the busy ones ", those people who spend their energies on useless business and relationships, which lead neither to their personal growth nor to an economic, social or psychological advantage, just because they're used to it.

Seneca is saying that we are so used to wasting time, doing certain things just because we have been taught to do so, that we don't realize that we could do much more for ourselves and for our enviroment if we only knew how to use our time correctly.

" vindica te tibi " means that you have to take control of your time, because no one can give it back to you. your future depends on the investment in yourself and in your time, your future and who you are as a person is up to you. take control of yourself.

๐Ÿญ. high quality sleep ( ๐Ÿ’ค )

never put your sleep on the back burner, 8 hours are not even enough, the younger you are the more you need sleep, especially if you are a woman. adult women generally need to sleep 9/10 hours a night, obviously the amount of sleep needed for rest depends from person to person, but always try to have a good, consistent sleep at night. if you ever think about sacrificing your sleep to study and/or procrastinate, know that you're only hurting yourself in the long run. without adequate rest, you will not be able to function properly and perform at your best the next day.

๐Ÿฎ. eat nutritious meals ( ๐Ÿœ )

when was the last time you ate a nutritious, warm, homemade meal, honey? you should eat at least (AT LEAST) 3 times a day a real, cooked, warm meal that provide you with the proteins, fats and sugars your body needs to function normally. throw away packaged and over-processed snacks, they don't meet your energy needs and are simply full of empty calories that will make you feel sick and don't help your beautiful brain to function. eat lots of protein, which helps you build the muscle mass that keeps you healthy (i'll post about that) and healthy fats which keep your beautiful brain working โ€“ the brain is mostly made up of fats so don't be afraid of them! the important thing is to eat healthy fats that are good for our body.

๐Ÿฏ. less is more ( ๐Ÿงฉ )

do less to achieve more. if you've ever made an absolutely unrealistic to-do list, raise your hand. overwhelmed by a thousand things to do we will never be able to make consistent progress in an area that interests us. it is not possible to do everything all the time and do it well, inevitably our energy runs out, our level of attention drops and we end up doing a little bit of everything badly. not all tasks can have priority, choose what to focus on and stick with it.

๐Ÿฐ. be gentle with yourself ( ๐ŸŒพ )

you're really giving it your all, why be so hard on yourself? the things you have done, the goals you have achieved, you should be proud of yourself and smile about it. demanding too much from your body will not lead to anything except burnout, remember that you are a person and not a machine, that you are not made to make every single hour of your day productive, and that it is okay to rest, because only thanks to rest you can face your day with the necessary energy.
