Don't give up , the fight is still going

Just in case you aren't clear on how things work, overturning Roe Vs. Wade will not make abortion illegal federally. Instead, it will give states the legal right to ban abortion, if they so choose, and many red states will attempt this if overturned. But, as of right now, the evening of May 2nd, no such decision has been made, there are no official proceedings, and nothing is set in stone. Now is the time to be loud.

for anyone who is currently panicked about the Supreme Court overturning roe v. wade:

it hasn't happened yet.

what was leaked was an initial draft of the majority opinion: it's the first indication of what the supreme court are leaning towards voting and why. (and by the way, these never get revealed to the public during current cases. this is a huge deal.)

"Justices can and sometimes do change their votes as draft opinions circulate and major decisions can be subject to multiple drafts and vote-trading, sometimes until just days before a decision is unveiled. The court’s holding will not be final until it is published, likely in the next two months." (X)

it is vital that people understand that it hasn't happened yet. and don't get me wrong: this is still very bad. my point isn't to give people a reason to stop caring. my point is, armed as we are with this leaked information, please please contact your state officials. support abortion rights initiatives as well as you are able.

send the Supreme Court every message we can that making this ruling would go against the public's wishes. turn public favor vehemently against them.

this hasn't happened yet. do not resign yourself to this future. do not panic. do not give up.

"The Supreme Court has voted to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, according to an initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito circulated inside the court and obtained by POLITICO.

The draft opinion is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – that largely maintained the right. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes.

“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” he writes in the document, labeled as the “Opinion of the Court.” “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”

A simple majority vote in the Senate would nullify the threat to reproductive health posed by the Mississippi case.

Another consequence of overturning Roe: charging mothers who don’t provide the absolute ‘best’ environments for their babies.

In 2019, a pregnant woman gets into an argument, and the other person shoots her in the stomach 5 times - obviously the baby is lost. The pregnant woman (who got shot) was charge with negligent homicide for ‘bringing her baby to the fight.’ It took 7 months of protest for her charges to be overturned.

Now that Roe is overturned? Can a mother be sued if she doesn’t take folic acid pills and her baby is born with spina bifida? What about the mom who doesn’t realize she was pregant until the 2nd trimester, drank in the 1st, and decides to keep the child? If her baby is born with fetal alcohol syndrome, is she charged with negligence for not keeping her body in tiptop shape, even though she didn’t know she was pregnant?

These are not hypotheticals. If a woman’s body is no longer her body, but *always* either a potential or future baby carrier, then we’re in for a whole host of crimes against pregnant people.

Note, I am finding these threads on the twitter feeds of ICU nurses who are now dreading the horrors that Roe falling will bring to their hospitals. This, on top of the horrors that they’ve seen and continue to see because of the pandemic. They were already exhausted and hanging by a thread.

hey just so everyone knows, It Was A Draft

the supreme court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is not official yet. someone leaked a draft of the opinion that the members of the court have been circulating and revising (the draft was created by justice samuel alito).

which is insane by the way. it’s the first time that a draft of a supreme court decision has ever been leaked in the entire history of this country.

it makes perfect sense to feel grief or panic or dread or sadness or anger or whatever you’re feeling right now. this is fucking terrible and scary. just for the sake of avoiding misinformation, i wanted to clarify this because i think a lot of the headlines have been misleading, and the info gets even more misconstrued when it’s rephrased on social media and stuff

This is awful. It's horrifying. It's deeply depressing. Rage. Scream. Mourn the tragedy we know is coming.

But remember this: what we are about to experience is the world our grandmothers and great grandmothers lived in. This is what they fought against.

Remember that they won. Even if the victory was temporary, they still won.

We can win, too. Prepare yourself. Finish your mourning, and get back to the fight. Yes, it's awful that we have to have this same fight. It's frustrating. It's heartbreaking. But now is not the time to surrender to despair.

Now the work begins.

One of the most common reasons I hear for people being against abortion is because “life is sacred.”

Really? Since when? When has life ever been sacred in this country?

If life is sacred, how come we don’t have universal healthcare?

If life is sacred, how come we don’t pass comprehensive gun laws so first graders don’t get gunned down in their classrooms?

If life is sacred, why don’t we offer paid maternal leave so mothers can actually take care of the babies that you are now forcing them to have?

If life is sacred, how come we don’t bat an eye when the police murder black kids?

If life is sacred, why do we have the highest maternal death rate in the developed world, which is only going to increase now that women are being forced to give birth?

If life is sacred, why is the death penalty even still a thing?

If life is sacred, why are we still encouraging violence against the LGBTQ+ community?

Life has literally never been sacred in this country. Maybe anti-choicers like to pretend that it is because it makes them feel righteous when in reality, they’re just misogynistic pieces of shit, but it’s not. And as long as psychotic, reactionary morons continue to steal power undemocratically and make decisions that the majority of us do not want, it never will be.
