Second piece for Cavota fest 2021, held by @cavotarchives This one is for the prompt "mourning". It's kind of a stretch for the prompt, But I felt like I had to make the situation pretty dire, because in normal circumstances Dakota could just. Ya know. Go back in time. Thus eliminating the need for mourning. Hence the smoke coming from the car, the remote area, and the ridiculous amount of blood. Seriously, this turned out looking way gorier than I was expecting. Anyway, enjoy your angst!

Background characters aren't usually what comes to mind when you think of "advancing the plot", but in this case I think they may have.

The villagers of Old Corona presumably left to escape the black rocks, but don't you think they wondered why Quirin - their leader - didn't come with them? Or his son for that matter? It's entirely possible they went back to search for him, but found Varian instead. I'm not sure what he would've told them, but I wanted to depict this interaction anyway.
