NU Wrestling 2.17.12 against Indiana
I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this more than I expected to.
John Shurna (24) made history yesterday as NU's all-time top scorer, helping the Wildcats beat Minnesota 64-53.
(Again imma be annoying and post again but whatever)
So today we had athletics day at my school and so I signed up for my age group for 40.: girls right? I checked it at the tent and what time I would be racing. The thing said 11:20. By that time it was 9:40 so I had plenty of time until my event. I set my alarm for 10 minutes earlier than my event. But idk how the time went from 11:20to 11:40 in my mind so by the time I showed up at 11:30 I had completely missed my race. So um yeah don’t trust me with times kids

Recalling the achievements of an unassuming legend.
August 9 2022 marked 10 years since the 800m WR was set in extraordinary style, by an extraordinary athlete, before a fantastic crowd at the London Olympics.
Andrew Osagie and Rudisha. The lanky Maasai warrior whose elegant running style has been described as poetry in motion, paced Osagie to a last place finish that would have won the British athlete gold at the three previous Olympics (Thursday August 9 2012).
Widely regarded as the best race of the London 2012 Olympics, the men's 800 metres assembled a cast that will never be seen again. And in fact, of the men who lined up on that famous August evening, only Rudisha would return to defend his title at the next Olympics in Rio.
Such was the pace that was set by the greatest 800m runner ever, that he pulled the rest of the field to 7 Personal Bests, 3 National Records, and 1 World Junior Record.
But make no mistake about it, Rudisha knew beforehand that he was going to produce something special on the day. He said as much in the warm-up area in the presence of Kip Keino, as well as his younger teammate 17 year old Timothy Kitum.
Then a youngster himself at only 23, Rudisha advised Kitum to run within himself and not to attempt to follow the breakneck pace that Rudisha was about to throw down. Said Rudisha to Kitum, "I’m going to break the world record today and if you follow me you will die."
A triumph of human will against all odds.
A world away from her wartorn country of Ukraine, Yaroslava Mahuchikh thrilled the crowd on her way to setting a WL of 2 metres in the high jump (Kipkeinoclassic, Saturday May 13 2023).
Game recognize game.
A moment of conviviality between John Carlos and Charles Asati who was part of the quartet that won 4×400m relay gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics (Safari Park Hotel, May 12 2023).
John Carlos he of the Mexico podium protest was in town for the 4th edition of the Absa KipKeinoClassic. Carlos who last visited in the 1970s, reminisced especially on his friendship with Ben Jipcho who passed away in 2020. Carlos remembered the 1972 Olympic silver medalist in the 3000 metres steeplechase as an inquisitive and cultured man with whom he enjoyed an easy rapport.
Peter Norman, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos (medal ceremony for the 200m, 1968 Mexico Olympic Games in Mexico City.
Celebrations galore.
June 2nd 2023. Reports emerge that the 1500m gang have been spotted in Florence Italy, where it's said that they smashed and then celebrated the new 1500m WR in style.
July 21st 2023. The gang arrive in Monaco to take a run at the mile record, with stunning results all round. Celebrations follow. Also, at the back there with his thumbs up, is that a javelin thrower that's gatecrashed a 1500m gang party? Julian Weber, is that you? I ask ya!
The athletes were mere pawns of a system.
Heidi Krieger, the 1986 European women's shot put champion and victim of a systematic performance enhancing programme.
A lot has been said of the seemingly unbreakable women's 400 metre and 800 metre world records, records which were set by Eastern bloc athletes some of whom like shot putter Heidi Krieger fessed up to being systematically fed anabolic steroids by East German officials from the age of 16.
In fact, as early as the age of 18, Krieger began developing visibly male characteristics. Eventually, years of enforced doping with what coaches claimed were "vitamins" left Heidi with little choice but to undergo gender reassignment surgery in 1997 because steroids had literally turned Heidi into a man.
Heidi Krieger now Andreas after gender reassignment surgery.
And while some East German athletes are on record as having complained to their handlers that they weren't receiving the latest in steroid enhancers, the very fact that the Stasi or the dreaded Ministry for State Security kept meticulous records on which athletes in the former East Germany were taking steroids and which steroids they were taking, shows you that this was not just a state sponsored programme, but that threats may have been held over athletes to keep them complaint with various performance enhancing programmes.
Two legends of the middle distances in one photo.
Hicham El Guerrouj; current holder of the men's 1500m & mile world records. Faith Kipyegon; current holder of the women's 1500m & mile world records.
In addition to their fondness for the 1500m, the East African and the North African also share a passion for running the 5000m as well. In fact, Faith won double World Championship gold in the 1500m and 5000m at Budapest 2023, while Hicham won Olympic gold in both events at Athens 2004.
American Academy of Achievement Awards 2024.
L-R; 1500m WR holder Faith Kipyegon, 6 time Wimbledon singles Champion Billy Jean King, Beatrice Chebet 10 000m WR holder (September 22 2024).
In what was a first for Kenya's athletes, Faith and Beatrice were feted in New York as guests of the American Academy of Achievement. The two exemplars of excellence not only got to rub shoulders with past honorees, but participated in a ceremony that's been held since 1961 to recognize exceptional accomplishments in the sciences, arts, sports, entertainment, etc.
Sports history.
Sunday October 13 2024.
Subject to the usual ratification procedures of course. This is the first time in the history of the 42.195km that a woman has broken the 2hr 10 minute barrier.
And similar to other female marathon WR holders of the past such as Tigist Assefa or even Tegla Loroupe, the new WR holder presumptive was paced by a male runner throughout her run on Sunday.
Moreover, physiologically speaking it makes perfect sense that female marathon runners as compared to female sprinters are edging ever closer to running so called male times.
