Can we take a sec and talk about the fact that literally nobody in WATT is even slightly okay?
Kate has severe abandonment and attachment issues, plus her best and only true friend dies and she’s the one who found the body. Oh yeah and SHE GOT STABBED AND ALMSOT DIED!
Reese accidentally killed an innocent person and then had to live with the guilt after lying about it, she kept that shit a secret for MONTHS.
Cairo’s best friend killed two people and she had no idea until months after it happened, plus she was unaware Riley was even struggling until after she confessed (and was also pining up a storm while all of this was happening)
Riley literally murdered two people in cold blood, enough said.
Farrah was an alcoholic and had little to no support system (“everyone hates me” “Farrah hated Farrah too”)
Chess had a drug addiction and had no faith that she could ever get better (“you don’t know who you are until you hate yourself”)
Annleigh lost her boyfriend and sister in the same night and for months was convinced Clark had been cheating on her with Farrah. She’s also like, way too into religion, just saying.
Mattie got framed for murder and sent to prison for a few months, that’s bound to mess you up, plus getting blackout drunk at the sleepover.
I think the only ones who are close to mentally stable is Clark and Eva, but I can’t really say that Clark is okay because he’s, ya know, dead.

Riley: words of affirmation (this girl needs people to tell her she’s doing well or she’ll think she’s doing everything wrong and then spiral into a mental breakdown)

Mattie: quality time (she gets lonely easily, and she loves to talk, so just sit and listen for a while and let her ramble, then you’ve earned her trust forever)

Clark: physical touch (loves kissing Annleigh, whether it’s her face, hand, (all the way up and down both her arms), hugs from behind are not just common but necessary)
Annleigh: words of affirmation (likes being reminded that she’s worth it, that she is capable, loves being praised for small accomplishments)
Farrah: insults (makes fun of things she likes, sometimes goes a bit too far to the point that people can’t tell if she’s joking or being seriously mean)

Kate started doing Gymnastics after she went to a studio open house and watched a bunch of girls doing cool tricks and just- baby lesbian panic
Kate gets very clingy when she’s sad, which is often, so it’s not uncommon to see her just hanging off of Chess with a pouty lip and furrowed brow while Chess is just sighing resignedly
Their gymnastics studio offered a summer camp for girls of a specific age and up. The first year Chess was eligible, Kate was still too young, so right before she left, Chess made them matching friendship bracelets as a promise to Kate that she wouldn’t forget about her while she was gone. They never took those bracelets off
They have sleepovers all the time, Chess does their hair, and Kate paints their nails, it’s become routine for them
Kate’s home life isn’t the best, and when things get to be too much she runs over to Chess’s house and climbs through her window, Chess’s parents will often come up to say goodnight and find the two cuddled up watching anime with the subtitles on and the volume off while eating a bag of chips that seemingly appeared from nowhere (Chess keeps a stash of snacks under her bed for these specific types of visits)
They made a pact when they were in 3rd grade that one day, they would move in together and get 5 dogs of all different breeds because “all dogs are amazing Checkers, how can we pick just one?!”
They were each other’s first kiss, when they were around 8 and 9 years old, after they watched a sappy romance movie and got curious, Chess brings it up from time to time and Kate just blushes

WATT character headcanons: nail polish
Mattie: matching nails and toenails
Annleigh: all the shimmer shades
Riley: glitter polish and glitter polish only
Cairo: acrylic nails, always and forever
Kate: owns one(1) bottle of black nail polish and uses only that bottle
Chess: paints her nails in alternating colors
Reese: uses a combination of matte polished with either glitter or shimmer top coats
Farrah: buys pre-colored acrylics and then paints over them with her own colors, Annleigh hates it
Eva: puts on a random nail polish and then picks it off within a few hours
Clark: prefers pastel shades, but will wear literally whatever Annleigh decides to put on him

Ay yo look who posted a new one shot!! Just little bit of fluff and angst as we head into the end of pride month, have fun with it!
Some late night Kate (and Eva) thoughts that may or may not make you sad.
Eva being the first person to make Kate smile for months after Chess dies. Before, Chess was the only one Kate would smile at, sure she would smile when she made fun of Riley, but it was always a sarcastic smirk, never a genuine smile.
The team is taking a water break during outdoor practice, Kate and Eva sitting a small distance away from everyone else. The other girls are talking when suddenly they hear this really soft giggle. They’re all confused because none of them laughed, and they turn around and see Kate just laughing, and Eva’s smiling and all proud of herself for it and the rest of the team is just shocked.
Eva’s very affectionate with people she’s close to. She never really touches Cairo, Annleigh, and Reese, sometimes she’ll fist bump Mattie or ruffle her hair (they have big sister little sister vibes) but she’s always finding ways to have physical contact with Kate. Holding her hand, touching her shoulder, wrapping an arm around her, hugging her, and Kate loves it. She goes from surly and mean to bubbly and sweet in an instant the moment Eva enters the room.
Cairo and Annleigh take it particularly hard. While Mattie and Reese are just happy to see Kate happy, Cairo and Annleigh are used to only seeing Kate act that way around Chess. Whenever they hear her using that gentler tone of voice, when her smile goes from sharp to soft, they expect to see her looking at Chess. But it’s not Chess, it’s Eva, and that’s weird.
Kate’s relationship with Eva is similar to her relationship with Chess, but it’s also different. With Chess, there was always that sense of being just out of reach, she knew she didn’t have a chance, so she just tried to be as much of a friend as she could. With Eva, she has a shot and so she can be giggly and happy around her and be affectionate and even a little flirty, because she knows her feelings might be returned.
Sometimes, they do things that Kate and Chess used to do. Movie nights and cuddling, rides home from school, a kiss dropped on the top of Kate’s head while studying, giving Kate notes for a class she missed because of a panic attack.
And Kate starts to lean into the familiarity of it. Sure, a part of her aches and thinks about Chess, but the larger part of her leaps with excitement, recognizing the little moments as things that once brought her joy, and diving back into the comfort of that feeling while also enjoying the newness of it. Because it’s not the same, not entirely.
Kate and Eva watch different movies, it’s a different bed that they’re cuddling in, it’s a different car and different music. Eva smooths her hand over Kate’s hair when she kisses her head, tucks a few strands behind her ear. Eva’s handwriting is different, and her note taking style is too. It’s the same but different, and Kate loves it.
Chess watches and follows Kate around as a spirit, and she cries the first time Eva makes Kate smile, the first time she laughs, and watches as Kate starts to return to her old self, a better version of her old self, a little worse for wear, but happier too. She’s so happy, and Chess couldn’t be prouder.
Chess, Farrah, and Clark sit in on the Tigers first practice after Mattie comes back. Kate is talking to Reese when Eva comes up and hugs her from behind. Kate stops mid sentence to smile as Eva kisses her cheek, and she giggles a little when she feel a little tickle against her side. Farrah gapes as the rest of the team looks on like this is normal, as if Kate wasn’t always the one to never crack a smile at anything before.
Anyway I’m just really soft for Kate and I love her a lot. She deserves happiness, they all do, and my brain is just in overdrive right now.

Annleigh sees Mattie as a second chance, in a way. She wasn’t the best sister to Farrah, so she tries to be the sister she wanted to be, to Mattie. In particular, Annleigh loves braiding Mattie’s hair.
Eva is like Mattie’s big sister, she’s the one Mattie goes to for advice and the one who helps her with tricks during practice. Eva gives her rides to school a lot.
Cairo and Mattie are a little awkward with each other, Cairo’s not great at dealing with kids who are younger than her, but Mattie is like crazy smart and Cairo’s not the best at school, so they do homework together sometimes and they’re happy with that arrangement.
Reese is the team mom and Mattie trusts her a lot. They can be seen hanging out during downtime at practice more often than not, and Reese likes to walk Mattie to class, just to make sure nobody messes with her.
Kate and Mattie share a love of horror movies (Tim Burton films in particular) and they like to geek out about it at lunch. Nobody else really gets it, it’s just their little thing.
Riley tries to coach Mattie wherever she can and sometimes ends up hovering to the point that Mattie has to get Cairo to distract her. The team likes to joke that Riley is grooming Mattie to be the next captain (she kind of is).
Farrah and Mattie vibe really well together, Farrah’s the one who helps her loosen up a little and teaches her to not care so much about what the rest of the team thinks. They go for snack runs at the local dollar store.
Clark (similar to Eva) is like a cool big brother for Mattie, he gives her piggyback rides and jokes with her a lot, it makes her feel a lot more comfortable and welcomed into the squad.
Chess doesn’t really know how to interact with Mattie at first, that is until Mattie expresses an interest in gymnastics. After that, Chess is all over her, teaching her tumbling techniques and critiquing some of the finer points of her tricks. Mattie appreciates the pointers and is happy to take any advice she can get. She hopes to one day go to the Olympics like Chess was going to.

They get married in the fall, and more than once, Annleigh has to carefully blot away tears before her makeup can run. Kate and Eva both made the executive decision to wear suits for the ceremony, and Annleigh nearly starts bawling at the sight of them.
“Dresses are so hard to move in,” Kate had explained, “and they’re all either too form fitting or too poofy.”
“Besides, we both look good in suits,” Eva had smirked with that statement, “and they’re so much more comfortable.”
In the end, Annleigh thinks, it was the right call to make. Kate and Eva face each other at the altar, nicely-tailored suits making them both stand tall and confident.
“I, Eva Sydney Sanchez, take you, Katie,”
That receives a few laughs from the crowd, including Kate, though it’s very watery.
“Katelyn Rose Dalton, as my lawfully wedded wife, to love and to Cherish, to embrace, and to set free. You took a tired, lost soul, and you made her whole and happy again. And each day, I will be grateful, I am grateful, for everything you’ve given to me.”
As Eva speaks through her vows, Annleigh rests her hand on the edge of the empty seat next to her. She doesn't know who's choice it was to leave seats open in their row for Clark, Farrah, and Chess, but she's grateful for it.
When she glances over, for a moment, she can see a flash of an image. Chess, in a stylish navy blue jumpsuit, trying to subtly wipe tears from her eyes without looking away from her best friend. Farrah, wearing a purple, flower print dress, leaning back in her chair and trying to pretend she doesn't care despite the way her lips twitch with a barely concealed smile. And Clark, looking dapper in a light blue button-down and dark slacks, an easy smile gracing his lips as Eva gazes at Kate with such adoring fondness. He turns his head toward her, and for a moment, their eyes lock. His smile turns sad, Annleigh feels a cold brush against her fingers, and then he's gone, taking Farrah and Chess with him.
“So now I take you, my friend, my best friend, my teammate, and the love of my life, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, for now, for always, for the rest of our lives.”
Annleigh turns back to the wedding, smiling as Kate has to dab at a few tears before she begins her own vows.
“I don’t really know how to follow that, and I’m not really good at preparing things in advance, I guess I’m winging this,” Kate chuckles, garnering some laughs, Eva gives her a soft smile.
“So, here I am, looking at you. And this is what I know: I have loved you since the moment I saw you. Loved you an feared you, well, not you, but this. I have been so terrified to love this profoundly. I never thought I was deserving of it, that I would always be left behind and forgotten. But not anymore. For good and for bad, for great and for hard, for the tough calls and the choices that just seem second nature. I am here, I am yours. Eva Sanchez, I choose you. I promise to honor you and cherish you, and while I will not obey you, per se,”
Again, she’s met with quiet laughter, and Eva shakes her head fondly, knowing full well that Kate’s free spirit will never let her be held down.
“I will always hear you, and I will keep loving you, one moment after another, one day at a time.”
They’re both sniffling now, tears barely kept at bay by blinding smiles. Annleigh sees more than a few people surreptitiously pulling out tissues.
Taking that as her cue, Cairo stands from her seat and passes Eva the rings, which have been kept safe in the pocket of her dress until this moment.
With soft, loving eye contact, Eva carefully slips one of the silver bands onto Kate’s finger.
“With this ring, I thee wed.”
“Thank you,” Kate giggles, “but I think you have the wrong ring.”
Eva glances down and, sure enough, the ring she’s holding is just a bit too big for Kate’s smaller hand.
They both laugh, along with many others, As Eva switches the rings so she’s holding the correct one.
“With this ring, I thee wed.”
This time, the ring slips over Kate’s finger and stays there, and Kate grins as she plucks the remaining band from Eva’s open palm.
“With this ring, I thee wed.”
Annleigh stands and cheers with everyone else as the couple locks lips, giving Cairo a small jab in the ribs and a teasing smirk as she wipes away a tear. Her former captain rolls her eyes, never losing her proud smile.
As she watches Kate and Eva dancing later that night, Annleigh takes a moment to reflect on how far they've all come. Sure, they all still have some bad days, but in the years following everything that happened, Annleigh has slowly gotten better. She's not perfect, she never will be, but it's so much easier to pull herself out of bed than it was a few years ago.
Mattie waves to her from where she and Reese are doing a very jazzed-up version of the Macarena, and Annleigh smiles a little bigger. She drops a flower beside the three candles that have been lit near the door to the outside gardens and joins the rest of her team on the dance floor.
