DINOSAUR (Dir: Ralph Zondag & Eric Leighton, 2000).
Travel back 65 million years in Walt Disney Pictures' visually stunning Dinosaur.
Iguanodon Aladar, separated from his mother while still an egg, is adopted by a family of lemurs and raised in the lush tropical surrounds of Lemur Island. When a devastating meteor shower hits, the ensuing deadly dust cloud forces the family to leave their now barren home. Joining a herd of dinos heading for the Nesting Ground, Aladar clashes with group leader Kron whilst catching the eye of his sister Neera. A dino romance ensues, but drought, rockslides and a pair of hungry Carnotaurus threatens the perilous mission at every turn.
With its real life filmed backdrops and detailed CGI dinosaurs, the movie looks beautiful. Yet, this groundbreaking approach to filming is undermined by a pretty pedestrian screenplay which is marred by some unfortunate glib, facile dialogue.
It is perhaps best not to dwell on the story and screenplay elements of Dinosaur, after all its writers didn't. Anyone above the age of 7 is clearly here for the spectacular visuals. This was the first time Disney had utilised CGI on such an elaborate scale in one of its own non-Pixar movies. While computer graphics have undoubtedly been refined in the two decades since its release, the visuals are still mightily impressive. Its most spectacular set-pieces include the meteor storm, the Carnotaurus attack and an opening, following the journey of Aladar's egg from nest to Lemur island, which the studio used as the film's trailer, such was their belief in the strength of the animation.
Dinosaur was a hit with cinema audiences, but not on the scale the studio had hoped. A better script would have undoubtedly elevated it above the status of matinee popcorn fodder; its visuals belonging to an epic on a much grander scale than dialogue and plot suggest. None the less, Dinosaur is a highly entertaining movie, both for dino obsessed kids and grown-ups who are willing to overlook its shortcomings to enjoy the awesome visuals.

THE MEG (Dir: Jon Turteltaub, 2018).
Bigger isnāt always better, as this mega Jaws clone proves.
āØJason Statham stars as Jonas Taylor, a washed up, alcoholic rescue diver held responsible for the death of two submarine crew in a botched rescue attempt. Called upon once again to rescue the crew of a stranded submersible, Taylor finds himself up against the Megalodon, a 75 foot shark thought to be extinct and soon heading for the coast of China! Is he up to the task? Will he end up as a Megalodon's dinner? Does anybody really care?
For those who have dreamed of a movie where Jason Statham battles a prehistoric beast, your wishes have come true. There is little more to The Meg than Statham vs Shark, although for some that will be enough.
Director Turteltaubās movies rarely take themselves too seriously and The Meg benefits from his light touch. Once it gets going, the action barely sags and it never gets bogged down by the sort of fist clenching emoting that these movies have a tendency to. However, the flipside of this is that The Meg is populated by a few too many underwritten, cardboard cut-out characters and relies a little heavily on concepts and situations familiar from many other, much better, movies.
āØThe computer generated special effects are impressive and while the audience has little investment in the characters to care one way or another if they end up as sharkbait, it is fun to see them get chomped on, one by one, by the massive Megalodon.
If itās thrills you want, there are plenty, but itās a shame that filmmakers tend to forget that movies like this donāt necessarily have to be the empty-headed entertainments they so often are. The original Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975) is testament to that. It's not a bad film but the formulaic, cookie cutter approach to filmmaking fails to lift it above any other number of forgettable action flicks.
Still, if rampaging monster movies are your thing it is certainly worth a look. If, like me, you have a soft spot for Jaws 3 (Joe Alves, 1983), you might enjoy this equally silly shark saga.

I broke the dinosaur game
Hereās a sort of old doll that doesnāt have a name other than the raptorchild.

I did a couple of short animations with him a while ago, and recently brought him back out.

Heās where I figured out how to make dolls stand on their own. I had seen that stop motion people drill screw holes in their floors, but I couldn't do that exactly. Instead, the floor is cardboard and I use thumbtacks and easily stab-able hot glue or hot glue filled feet.Ā

This doll is the first time I used this technique and its because I had recently gotten some mold putty and liked how this toy dinosaurās feet looked, so I used them.

Raptorchild is also a bit outdated in that his structure is pipecleaner instead of the slightly sturdier wire I use now so heās a bit small, and I didnāt know how to do hands yet. I still like his general design though, and because heās a bit old, Iām don't have to worry about breaking him when I animate because I could probably fix him better than his original now.
