Me thinking the hot villain lady was gonna last more than 1/4 of the game

Edit: so I was wrong she didn't even last 5 hrs into a 30+hr story 🤡🤡🤡
I cant be the only one who felt Vibes ™ from the Tarja/Jill and Gav/Clive interactions right? No? ok
Finally finished FFXVI
As stated finally finished and i have many thoughts, and not all are good or (probably) popular.
Before I post spoilers, I'll just put my general score for the game; Its an 8/10 BUT I didnt particularly "like" the game (meaning my first response to "did you like the game" was no, but its not really a no but not a yes)
So now into spoilers and my semi indepth review!
Ok so first things first I'll say, yeah I didn't really like the game, and dont get me wrong there was no skipping cutscenes and ignoring things, I did every sidequest and most of the hunts.
Now onto the things I like;
The characters: I loved pretty much all of them (especially Gav, he holds my heart) and there were some i didnt love (Jill, girl i wanted to love you so bad but you were so mid imo) but none that I hated (except Annabella, but i loved to hate her)
The Setting: Valstheia is an amazing world for this setting and the art direction was perfection, it felt full and lived in like an actual country.
The music: This is a given, its Final Fantasy, the music is gonna be banger as per usual.
The active time lore: oh my god this thing saved me so many times in this game and it was just fun to get the little details and watch them fill in.
The story: I was invested in the story...for the most part, It was a bit over complicated for me personally and there are some changes I would have liked and i felt like it was way too front-loaded.
Things I didnt like;
The length: THIS GAME WAS WAY TOO LONG AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL. It did not need to be a 30+hr main story, and because of that it got very boring at points, especially just after the 5 yr jump and the titan fight, then from that to the Waloed. There was just so much filler and many of those Main quests could have been side quests (since there werent too many of those)
The story (cont.): So While i kinda liked the story, I feel like it could have improved on the themes of Breaking Bonds and Unity by having the Rivals join Clive and become party members instead of absorbing their power. This would have also furthered the Breaking of Fate theme since Clive wont be following his destiny as Ifrit and the ending fight against ultima could have been more impactful with all the Dominants overcoming the odds and defeating him (even if they die at the end, essentially sacrificing themselves like Clive did in the real ending) This also removes the played out Chosen One plot line for Clive (which they do kinda subvert because Clive is great in general) itd also give the other Dominants more of a central role (THAT THEY DESERVED)
THe Edginess ™: Let me set this straight first, I do not mind the edge, I enjoy a more mature story (and this series needed a shift to more mature) BUT it was way too front loaded. Up till the 5 year jump it was like game of thrones edgy, then it just felt like a generic early final fantasy story with more cursing. They also mentioned slaves so much it got to the point where I was like that good place meme with the time knife but replace time knife with slaves. Also it felt a bit strange with that they would want to be edgy, we see Benedikta almost get SAed but we cant see her severed head??? (the fact that we dont see her head led me to believe she was alive for so long, aldo why was it glowing??)
Final thoughts:
This game was a great game and had the potential to be a masterpiece to me, but I think it just slightly missed the mark with the story. This could also just be me, I have weird FF standards and the game did and didnt feel like a FF game and I think it would have benefited not being part of the series (though the sales would have been worse) I would Highly recommend it to people who enjoy ARPGs but I think Id hesitate to FF fans.
Is it just me or is FF16 fairly male dominated? This isn't a criticism or anything, and I could very well be insane but it was something that I kinda noticed during my playthrough.
I do love the lads though, I think Clive is one of my fav protags in the series and Gav is one of my favorites in general
Weirdly - and also not weirdly - all my screenshots of Clive are from moments when he's staring at Jill. He just seems so calm when he's looking at her, like the weight he's carrying has been lifted for those sort few moments as he looks at her. (Unfortunately, I don't ship them together, and it's annoying me. Im kinda glad im not the only one who doesn't ship them. I was honestly a bit scared about that 😅)

I wanna write a one shot where Clive is being serious one moment, talking about business to Gav or Cid, and then the reader chimes in to add something, and Clive just stares at her. Listening to her make some good points with a content smile on his face. Her voice and presents makes him feel at ease, and he never wants to let her go again.
Cid/Gav makes fun of him 100%. No way would they let him get away with that.
"You know, you staring at her like that is kinda creepy. You sure you ain't no perv or something?"
"Fuck off." Clive will scowl at them and turn around, walking off as he listens to them laugh.

Yoshi-p and Xenophobia in gaming

Ff16 is causing a buzz online due to its producer Naoki Yoshida defending the game's lack of diversity under the guise of " Historical realism ". Ah yes, the game where you can summon mythical beasts and cast magic spells is so deeply trenched in realism. Naoki's statements are outright xenophobic even if he didn't intend them to be as such. He's reinforcing the idea that people of color have no place in fantasy worlds and that their existence is somehow more esoteric than literal dragons. I never knew we were so special that we outshine all manner of Mythical Gods and monsters just by breathing.
Even if you want to but into the historical accuracy nonsense, various articles online provide proof of Africans living in medieval England so there's no need to have such a vanilla white cast. Perhaps Naoki should do his research before making outrageous claims. Black people have existed in Europe for while now. We've been here and yet he acts as if we don't exist. Don't y'all ever get tired of making all white fantasy games anyway? A little melanin here and there never killed anyone. Well, except for Mihoyo because they avoid the color brown like its poison. It's crazy how they made two regions based on South Asia and the Middle East with no dark skin characters in sight. And no, using the absolute lightest shade of brown possible doesn't count as representation. Even real life white people have darker tans than the Genshin Impact cast.

It's gotten to the point that a small number of fans are boycotting ff16 in the name of diversity. Similar to Hogwarts Legacy, I don't believe it's a good idea to boycott a game simply because of a disagreeable opinion from the staff. Boycotting won't change anything or inspire Naoki to do better. The best thing to do is to call out Naoki's Ideology and state why diversity is so important in media. Developers and Producers need to be made aware of how their actions affect their fans, particularly fans of color. POC have every right to exist in the world of fantasy.
I LOVE IT 🥰😭🥹

This man 😭😭😭😭
I imagine this is the portrait of him hung in the palace tho

Dion Lesage
Yes!!! Ya boi just said "they lost control? Been there, done that, lived through it, ain't nothing gonna stop me now I guess"
dion "i'm just built different" lesage really stood there while clive explained that the other dominants who managed to prime without their power did so by absorbing too much aether and losing their minds and said "well then i'm just going to be better than that" and he was.
Now here's a serious question: in Valisthea, are dragoons (and everyone if they have the training) able to naturally jump like this, or do they have to be using magic - perhaps Light magic specifically? Some of Dion's attack jumps are specifically using Light magic to create the shockwave, but in this instance we see he doesn't have to be doing a Jump/Dive attack to be able to just launch himself further than any regular jump should manage.
One of the more hilarious things in the game is that the jump button for Clive makes him jump like a NORMAL PERSON. Unlike in, say FF13 (the sequels especially where there is a designated jump button), he can't naturally launch himself from a dead stop to arguably higher than his own height (magically enhanced or not). I question the inclusion of a jump button if it's going to be so useless and you have Garuda powers to launch you in the air if necessary.
So does that mean in Sanbreque, with their prejudices against Bearers, technically the dragoons are using some kind of magic-infused armor or weapons while still not wielding actual magic themselves? Is Dion the only one capable of using a Jump/Dive without it needing to be an attack? Is this why Dion always has his spear when he Primes - to help him focus his magic? When shit went down in Twinside, he Primed *without* holding his spear, but it was present when he eventually De-primed, suggesting that it is somehow tied to his Prime (or the devs needed him to have his spear in the next cutscene and didn't want us to think about it that hard).
Sidenote: why did the game feel it necessary to tease Dion dying here? Did it feel like that to anyone else? Like "I will be with you anon" as the last man to fight to buy the ship enough time to eacape...and he does - proving in the process that he is far better to be the last man buying the ship time when Clive's escape against the Sleipnirs ended with him barely clinging to the Enterprise and telling Mid to punch it. Dion is able to actually jump a long distance even when the ship is taking off. Cool. But why focus on Dion buying them a few extra seconds? Just to show off for ONE scene? Why did it feel like they were teasing that he might not make it...when he easily does?
Anyway, I rant as always
