Lairds and Ladies!

Wo liegen eigentlich diese Highlands, von denen jeder immer spricht?

Die Highlands sind ein Teil Schottlands, das ist schon klar. Aber: Wo beginnen sie genau?

Von Inverness im Osten bis nach Fort William im Westen zieht sich eine deutliche Linie über die Landkarte: Die Great Glen Fault. In ihr befindet sich zum Beispiel auch das berühmte Loch Ness. Oberhalb der “großen Tal Verwerfung” spricht man von den Nord-West-Highlands.

Ein Beamter würde vermutlich von der “Highland Council Area” sprechen – zu deutsch dem “Highland Verwaltungsgebiet”. Das umfasst die Bereiche oberhalb der Great Glen Fault.

Ausgenommen sind die äußeren Hebriden und die Orkneys. Es schlägt außerdem noch einen halbkreisförmigen Bogen unterhalb von Inverness und Fort William in die Grampians hinein. Inverness ist übrigens die Hauptstadt der Highlands.

Die Highlands sind auch das Gebiet, das von der gälischen Sprache geprägt ist – tatsächlich heißt der Name für Highlands „A‘ Ghàidhealtachd“ und bedeutet in etwa “Gegend, in der Gälisch gesprochen wird”.

Je weiter westlicher, desto verbreiteter ist Gälisch – auf den Äußeren Hebriden wird es heute noch am meisten gesprochen. Dort sind es über 70 Prozent der Menschen, auf Skye dagegen nur noch die Hälfte der Einwohner und schließlich sprechen an der Ostküste nur höchstens 6 Prozent der Schotten die keltische Sprache.

Oben im Nord-Osten und auf Orkney dagegen wurde bis ins 18. Jahrhundert neben Englisch nur Norn – ein altnordischer Dialekt der Wikinger – gesprochen. Heute ist dieser Dialekt ausgestorben, und spiegelt sich höchstens noch in einigen Ortsnamen wider.

Die Wikinger herrschten für vier Jahrhunderte lang über weite Teile der Highlands. Und haben bis heute ihre Spuren hinterlassen.

Das Verhältnis zwischen den in Schottland ansässigen Völkern und den Wikingern fing laut den Chroniken nicht besonders gut an:

Am 8. Juni 793 stürmten Männer, die auf langen Schiffen von Norden gekommen waren, das Kloster von Lindisfarne. Sie mordeten und plünderten, ehe sie schließlich wieder von der kleinen Insel vor der Ostküste Nordenglands abzogen.

Die Wikinger, so glaubt die Wissenschaft heute, waren zu der Zeit keine Unbekannten mehr. Es kam schon vor 793 zu vereinzelten Überfällen, und man geht sogar davon aus, dass es erste Handelsbeziehungen gab, ehe einige Nordmänner mit dem Plündern anfingen.

Doch im Gedächtnis der Menschen und in den Chroniken markierte Lindisfarne den Beginn der Wikinger-Ära, den Beginn des Schreckens. Fortan ließen sich die Männer aus dem Norden häufig ­blicken.

Das Kloster auf Iona im Westen Schottlands, ein wichtiges spirituelles Zentrum der Gälen von Dalriada, überfielen sie gleich dreimal in den Jahren 795, 802 und 806. Die Kirchen auf Islay waren ebenso im Visier der Angreifer.

Waren es zu Beginn zunächst nur Raubzüge gewesen, die meist von jungen Wikingern zum Beweis ihrer Kriegskunst und zum Sammeln von Reichtum ausgeführt wurden, kamen mit den Jahren auch Siedler nach Schottland.

Zu dieser Zeit waren die Shetlands und Orkneys, also die Inseln im Norden, vermutlich bereits in der Hand der Skandinavier.

Wie die Inbesitznahme des Landes vor sich ging, darüber streiten sich die Gelehrten allerdings. Einige glauben, dass besonders auf den nördlichen Inseln eine schleichende und friedliche Übernahme vonstatten ging.

Andere gehen tatsächlich von einem Völkermord durch die Wikinger aus. Durch Ausgrabungen auf den Äußeren Hebriden weiß man, dass sich dort zum Beispiel die Töpfer- und Eisenwaren schnell und deutlich im Stil veränderten, was nicht auf eine friedliche Integration hindeutet, sondern auf Vertreibung, Versklavung und Vernichtung.

Kurzum: Die Wikinger waren eine Heimsuchung für die Highlands, die westlichen Inseln und auch für Irland und England.

Dort wo sich die Wikinger niederließen, änderte sich auch die Sprache. Wortendungen wie „-ness“ oder „-vik“ oder andere weisen noch heute deutlich auf nordische Ortsnamen hin. Broad­ford auf Skye etwa birgt den „Fjord“ in sich, es kommt von „breida-fjord“ und bedeutet „breiter Meeresarm“.

Oder die Insel Jura bei Islay kommt vom nordischen „dyr ey“ – die „Rotwild-Insel“. Die Liste solcher Beispiele ließe sich an dieser Stelle noch lange fortsetzen.

Die Wikinger-Siedler brachten neben der Sprache auch ihr Handwerk mit. Damit prägten sie zum Beispiel den Hausbau.

Die später verbreiteten schottischen Blackhouses etwa weisen starke Ähnlichkeit mit den Langhäusern der Nordmänner auf.

Und nicht zu vergessen: Die Wikinger waren geübte Seefahrer und Schiffsbauer. Auch diese Kunst etablierten sie auf den Inseln.

The NC500 offers a breathtaking journey through some of Scotland's most picturesque landscapes, from rugged coastlines to towering mountains, with the promise of kind-hearted locals, thrilling roads, historic castles, tranquil lochs, fine whisky, and delicious food along the way. Imagine a trip where every day feels like a postcard-worthy adventure, and you've got the NC500.

The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile circular route that starts and ends in Inverness. The journey takes you along the coast, offering an ever-changing panorama of breathtaking scenery. The route passes through quaint villages, historic towns, and remote wilderness, providing a well-rounded experience of the Scottish Highlands.

One of the highlights of our NC500 adventure was the incredible weather we experienced. Scotland is notorious for its unpredictable climate, but we were fortunate to have mostly sunny and clear days. This meant that we could fully appreciate the mesmerizing landscapes, from the azure waters of the North Sea to the emerald green fields and dramatic mountain ranges.

The Scottish Highlands are not just known for their natural beauty but also for the warmth of their people. Everywhere we went, we encountered friendly locals who were more than happy to share their stories and offer helpful advice. Their welcoming nature made our journey all the more memorable.

For those who enjoy the thrill of the open road, the NC500 doesn't disappoint. The route is dotted with winding, narrow roads that snake through the countryside, offering a truly exhilarating driving experience. The famous Bealach na Bà, a steep and winding mountain pass, is a highlight for adventure-seeking drivers. Each twist and turn reveals a new breathtaking vista.

No trip to Scotland would be complete without exploring its rich history, and the NC500 offers plenty of opportunities to do just that. We visited historic castles like Dunrobin Castle and the iconic Eilean Donan Castle, set against the backdrop of sparkling lochs and lush landscapes. It felt like stepping back in time.

Whisky lovers will be in their element along the NC500 route. We stopped at several distilleries to sample some of Scotland's finest single malts. From the peaty flavors of Islay to the smooth Speyside varieties, each distillery had its unique character and charm. It's an excellent way to appreciate Scotland's national drink in its homeland.

Foodies will relish the chance to savor traditional Scottish dishes on this journey. We indulged in hearty meals like haggis, neeps, and tatties, as well as freshly caught seafood in coastal villages. And let's not forget about the famous Scottish breakfasts that kept us energized for our daily adventures.

Our road trip along the NC500 in the Scottish Highlands was nothing short of magical. With perfect weather, warm-hearted locals, thrilling drives, historic landmarks, whisky tastings, and mouthwatering cuisine, it's a journey that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
