“Tony, you’re too young to understand this right now, so I thought I would put it on film for you. I built this for you. And some day you’ll realize that it represents a whole lot more than just people’s inventions. It represents my life’s work. This is the key to the future. I’m limited by the technology of my time, but one day you’ll figure this out. And when you do, you will change the world. What is and always will be my greatest creation… is you.”

Custody - Tony Stark

It was a normal day Pepper and Tony had settled down with dinner and wine on the couch in his home rebuilt finally in Malibu. Well, it felt normal till Tony’s phone rang.

Tony got up and took the call but upon seeing Tony’s face when he re-entered the room Pepper knew something was wrong.

“Tony?” Pepper said as she got up and stood in front of him. “Who was it?”

Tony was looking off to the side, still processing what he had been told. “A cop. My sister, she died.”

“Oh My God.” Pepper gasped reaching out to rub Tony’s arm for comfort. “What’s going to happen to Y/n?”

“They want me to take her.” Tony told her. Tony of course said yes in a heartbeat. He and Y/n had a great relationship and he couldn’t let her go to anyone else. They needed each other, hell he thought of her as his own kid. But he was scared. Not that he’d admit it.

“Tony-”

“What if I can’t take care of her?” Tony voiced his worries looking to Pepper. Hoping she could give him an answer.

“Tony you have to. For her and for your sister.” Pepper encouraged trying to get him to see that even if he was scared he still had to do it. “You are that girl's best choice, Tony.”

Tony knew Pepper was right he needed to put his fears aside and focus on helping his niece.

It was only a few days later that everything was signed and packed. Y/n was coming today and Tony was equally excited and nervous. Tony had spent the last couple of days setting up a room for her to call her own. It was her favorite room to sit in whenever she visited.

“Hey’a Y/n/n.” Tony greeted as she exited the car Happy had brought her in.

“Hi uncle Tony.” Y/n gave him the best smile she could muster. Under the circumstances.

“I’m sorry, Kiddo.” Tony mirrored her expression and pulled her into a hug. He was sure she needed one.

“I’m sorry to.” She mumbled into his chest.

“Why are you sorry?” Tony asked leaning back to look down at his niece with questioning eyes.

“She was your sister.” Y/n stated looking at him with sad eyes.

Tony let out a soft sigh. Yeah he lost his sister and it hurt but she lost her mom. That had to hurt more, Tony knew it did. He had gone through the same thing. Y/m/n was a single mother, they were closer than close Y/m/n and Y/n. Tony didn’t expect her to be worried about how he was feeling. “Sweetheart, she was your mom. You don’t have to feel sorry for me. Just focus on you right now and no one else, okay?”

With that said the two headed inside the beautifully huge Malibu home.

They were greeted by Peper as she came down the stairs. “Hey, Hunny.”

Pepper hugged Y/n as they met in the living room.Y/n hugged her back with a small smile. She loved Pepper, she just wasn’t up for playing super happy at the moment. “Hi Pep.”

“We set up a room for you.” Pepper told her giving her a soft smile as they pulled out of their hug.

“Great view.” tony added from nearby, Y/n turned her head to look at her uncle with furrowed brows. So he continued. “It’s the one you always loved to sit in when you’d visit.”

Y/n smiled a little brighter at him, and at the fact that he with how busy his life is would remember that. “Thanks.”

“No problem kiddo.” Tony shook his head waving off the good, kind, sweet hearted thing he did for her.

Y/n almost laughed, her uncle never liked having the nice things he did for those he cared about acknowledged. “I’m gonna go out my stuff up there.”

“Take your time.” Pepper nodded

Y/n started to head up the stairs, but before she made it to the top, Tony called out. “Hey, Y/n/n.”

“Yeah.” she said turning to look down at him.

“Pizza? Dinner.” He snapped his fingers pulling out his phone.

“Sure. You know what I like.” Y/n nodded smiling at him. She took a few more steps before she stopped and looked at him again. “Uncle Tony. It sounds good.”

Once Y/n was upstairs Pepper turned to Tony with a sad expression. “She’s holding it together well, but she’s going to break sooner or later.”

Tony agreed, Y/n was holding it together but that couldn’t last forever. “And I’ll be there for her when she does.”

Pepper watched him, knowing him to well. “Tony, you need to let it out too you know.”

“I will. In my own way.” Tony nodded as he continued to find the pizza place’s number in his contacts.

“Breaking things or fixing things?” Peper answered crossing her arms over her chest with raised eyebrows. When would he learn to just talk to someone about his feelings?

“I’m feeling like a little bit of both.” Tony smiled as he finally found the number and pressed dial.

“I’m here if you need to talk.” Pepper called after him as he headed towards the kitchen.

Tony gave a wave of his hands and a short nod before pointing to his phone. “Got it. Now pizza. It won't order itself.”

Ivan Vanko is honestly a fascinating character who gets horribly misused. There is so much untapped potential in this character, and I'm probably going to be whining about that for the rest of this movie.

Conceptually, Ivan is Tony's shadow reflection. The film is not subtle about this; It opens with Ivan making an arc reactor in a cave barely-lit garage from a box of scraps, echoing Tony's achievement in the preceding film. It wants you to see Ivan as another Tony Stark. The Tony of another story. His equal and parallel.

But unfortunately, this is a busy movie and it doesn't have a lot of time to dwell on that. Iron Man 2's biggest problem is that it tries to do too many things, and they don't always complement each other well.

Looking back on Ivan now, I can't help but wonder what could have been. Ivan seeks revenge against Tony in retaliation for what he perceives to be Tony's father destroying Ivan's family. He wants to avenge his dead father for the life that the Starks allegedly stole from him, but his fury is misplaced.

And when I think about that, I also think about Captain America: Civil War. Tony, in a fit of vengeance, tried to murder Bucky in retaliation for the Winter Soldier assassinating his parents. In that moment, Tony was trying to avenge his parents for the life that Bucky allegedly stole from him, but his fury was misplaced. In that moment, Tony fully became his shadow reflection Ivan Vanko.

And that's a fascinating parallel that is easily overlooked because. Well. This movie wasn't very memorable.

Iron Man 2 was funny as fuck like imagine you’re battling a terminal illness and at the end of what is arguably the worst week of your life some guy shows up and is like “we’ve been conducting a secret job interview for a position you didn’t apply for and we’ve decided to reject you” and you just go “alright fuck you too then” and revolutionize the energy business.

I agree with all this.  I would also add how much something similar to this sticks out in my mind in IM2, and I find quite interesting in the wake of Stane: Justin Hammer.  Granted, he’s a wannabe in a lot of senses, and I think he is in this sense too.  He uses Tony’s name a lot, even tries to gain control over him in conversation by using “Anthony”, and the touching.  That always bothered me in the first part of IM2, and now I see it more strongly as the same vibe that came from Stane.  Hammer wants to get into a position with Tony like Obadiah had, and you see Tony is Not Having It.  I wouldn’t be surprised if part of Tony’s reaction isn’t just “Ew, Hammer, NO”, but also unconscious or direct memories of Obadiah.  The differences between Hammer and Stane are finesse, practice and opportunity.

That scene in iron man where Obadiah stane is buttoning up Tony’s shirt (after he shows him the arc reactor) gives me the creep

IM2 thoughts

Hi! Today we're thinking about Tony's obvious, death wish ass behavior in Iron Man 2 (though to be fair to him, it's not like he wants to die, he just thinks he's gonna and acts accordingly) -- and why on earth Pepper, Rhodey, and Happy aren't more alarmed

Like, don't get me wrong, they're concerned! But they also don't freak the fuck out at Tony's myriad red flags? They see him go from IM1's grounded certainty to a reckless disregard for his own life, fatalistically courting chaos and pushing everyone who cares about him away. Literally 0 to 100 so fast. They worry, but they also roll with it.

These are Tony's people! Why is their reaction mostly just damage control? And that got me thinking... maybe it's because this behavior is familiar.

We know Tony's changed. But the world around him doesn't know like we know. Even his family sees him basically preparing for his own death and just assumes he's reverted back to the way he always was

That's why their response is so subdued. None of IM2's depression, abyss, suicidality, despair strike them as abnormal Tony behaviors.

Black Widow

Ok. I watched Black Widow about a week ago and I loved it! But she needed a trilogy.

Story Time! My dad has always been a fan of the Iron Man movies but would not let me and my sister watch them because of the way he treated women. Understandable. But one evening he called us out and let us watch the bit in Iron Man 2 where Natasha beats up all the Hammer Tech Goons. Mind you this was way before I even knew what the word trans meant let alone knew it described me so I still though I was a girl at this point.

That scene blew my mind. My sister and I thought it was so cool! She was competent woman who didn’t need the mans help and was actually better than him in the context of the scene! I had never seen something like that on TV before! I was so excited! We made my dad rewind the movie so we could watch that scene over and over again.

Looking back I can’t even describe how powerful a trilogy with a strong, badass woman lead would have been for me. Because that two minute scene made me feel unstoppable.

I am so excited for all the little girls who get to see Black Widow and Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch and The Wasp and all the other badass Marvel Women!
