Even though iPad sales stumbled in the third quarter, Apple Inc.'s iTunes store continued to rock on, according to the company latest earnings report released Tuesday.
The iTunes store "generated record billings of $4.3 billion in the June quarter, culminating in our best month and best week ever for App store billings at the very end of the quarter," Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said in a call with analysts. Those gross billings, which includes money passed through to developers as well as Apple's cut, translated to net quarterly revenue of $2.4 billion for Apple, up 29% from the year ago quarter, Oppenheimer said.
Oppenheimer credited movies, TV shows and apps for the uptick, saying iTunes customers downloaded more than 1 billion TV episodes and 390 million movies to date. They're currently downloading more than 800,000 TV episodes and 350,000 movies every day.
As for the five-year-old App Store, Apple disclosed that developers have created more than 900,000 iOS apps thus far, including 375,000 apps designed specifically for the iPad.
"The popularity of these apps remains incredibly strong," Oppenheimer said in a conference call with analysts to discuss the company's third quarter earnings. "Downloads have surpassed 50 billion. and app developers have made over $11 billion from their sales of the App Store -- half of which was earned in the last four quarters."
The message is clear: For iTunes, the money is shifting towards video and apps, diluting its former reliance on music, as Apple expands its array of digital content offerings. That's not necessarily bad news for the music industry, which has also diversified its product lineup to include apps, games and videos in which music is a primary element.
Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook also presented another spot of good news for the industry. Although iPad sales dropped 14% in the quarter, Cook said he belived both tablets and smart phones have further room to grow, particularly in overseas markets. Both types of mobile devices are key drivers of music and media consumption.
Another potential platform for media consumption is the automobile, which Cook viewed as "part of the ecosystem."
"Having something in the automobile is very, very important," Cook said. "Apple can do it in a unique way, and better than anyone else. It’s a key focus for us."
When it came to products that Apple may be working on -- whether it's a watch, a new Apple TV or an integration with car manufacturers -- Cook refused to tip his hand, declining to answer analysts' questions on upcoming releases.
Nearly a decade after the mixtape wars of the mid-2000s, the format still resides in an awkward limbo for retailers, distributors, artists and labels. Many retailers stopped carrying mixtapes after the RIAA proved litigious against the sale of unofficial releases, leading police raids on several retailers in 2005 and on the offices of DJ Drama in 2007. But mixtapes remain a critical promotional tool in the industry, particularly among hip-hop artists, where they often rival official albums. Outside the purview of the major-label system, sales of the format have persisted.
Last month, a mixtape album by unsigned artist Chance the Rapper available as a free download landed at No. 63 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, having sold 1,000 copies in the week ending July 7, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The collection of original music, "Acid Rap," was sold through iTunes and Amazon, despite having been offered for free on the artist's website since April 30. After representatives of the artist claimed that the sales were being made without their knowledge or compensation, digital versions of the tape were quickly pulled from both retailers. But on Amazon, an apparently unauthorized physical version of "Acid Rap," credited to a company called "Mtc," continues to be sold at press time for $14.83.
"I've never heard of Mtc, so this has taken us by surprise," Chance's manager Patrick Corcoran says. "But when I first saw it I showed Chance, and his lawyers are trying to stop it."

You know what I'd love, if I could code my own custom shuffles for music playlists.
So I could like tag specific songs and use the album orders and stuff to code together a thing saying to shuffle these songs but these songs from this album need to be played in order but still disbursed throughout, songs marked with this tag cannot play convectively unless they're from these albums in this order, this part of the playlist always needs to play before the rest of it but it still needs to be shuffled, these songs need to have a few seconds of silence added after them because they end abruptly, songs with this tag should have an added fadeout, songs that are the volume of all songs should be averaged to find the average volume of specific songs to then adjust the volumes of different songs so the average volumes don't differ too drastically, this song spesifically should play at a lower volume, this song should stop early, these songs must always play in this order with roughly 2.6 minutes of other music in-between each of them but the order of those last two should be randomised. Just stuff like that, it'd make making playlists alot more fun and listening to them better, so you get the exact experience you want, because you don't want completely random shuffling, or a random official algorithm based shuffle, or to order it yourself and have it be the same every time, it'd be perfect.
