Honestly, I can't stress enough how important the theme of family is in mdzs. IMO it is the main theme of the book. Of course romance and devotion is important, but there's something so special about the way families are portrayed in mdzs and how important they are. (I watched donghua and read some of manhua btw)
Let's start with sibling relationships:
The whole plot started because of love for a brother and rage for how unjust his death was. The whole Cloud Recesses arc is an amazing set up for Wangxian etc, but it also shows the complicated yet sweet relationship between WWX and JC. How they both care so much about each other, how they tease each other. IMO JC did see WWX as a brother and loved him as such. Every time he scolds Wei Ying, it's always about Wei Ying's safety. Usually it's not "How dare you use demonic cultivation, you're gonna get our clan in danger", it's " If you keep it up, I won't be able to protect you". Even during the Wen invasion, the they're still together, they sacrifice themselves to save another. And don't get me started about Jiang Yanli, she loves her brothers very much. Despite Madam Yu creating a competition between the boys or Jiang Fengmian's lack of action and even enablement of WWX' dangerous and irresponsible behavior, they still love each other. I can ramble about yunmeng trio so much, but in short despite everything they went through, they cared for each other deeply. After Jiang Yanli's death everything changes, because imo the boys fully internalized Madam Yu's last words. WWX bring pain and destruction to Yunmeng. I think I need to stop, or we'll be here all day.
Or, another example: Nie bros. Nie Mingjue had to basically raise A-sang. They do deeply care about each other, and despite everything they'll be here for each other. Yet the desire to protect NHS from sad reality of golden core and qi deviation, their relationship soured a little. But it's obvious even for an outsider like WWX, that NMJ loves his brother. He pressures NHS, because he feels that he's starting to lose it. He wants to prepare his little bro to be a decent leader and to live without him. And NHS literally makes it his life mission to avenge his Dage even if it means having a blood on his hands.
Lan brothers show a good brother relationship. Lan Xichen supports LWJ in everything he does. Even his love for WWX. He gets protective, when he thinks WWX is laughing at LWJ's feelings. Lan Zhan is deeply saddened when his brother is missing and helps him discover the truth about his best friend's death. They're almost perfect siblings. (Plus they're super funny when drunk).
MXTX deserves an award for writing so many different sibling dynamics. And that's not all, she also portrays this different parental relationship so interesting.
Like, the nephews you didn't want, but care so much about, that you don't want them to suffer like their father did (Lan Qiren and this family drama); the kid of your husband's unrequited love, whom he seemingly loves more than your own children (Yunmeng Jiang happy house), JGS and the myriad of the kids he has ect. I love this variety so much.
I just love so much how MDZS has so much themes. Every time I think about MDZS, I find more and more interesting points and moments that change my perception of the characters. Every character is so humain and has their own motivation, that I can't truly hate some of them (apart from Wen Chao, his mistress and JGS, they suck).
TLDR: MXTX is a queen of writing complex human characters.

This is a mix of stream of consciousness and excessively detailed plot outline, but it’s relatively linear and easy to follow.

I think a lot of Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng's issues would have been solved if Jiang Fengmian had decided to adopt WWX as just another random disciple instead of trying to shoehorn him into the main family.
Wei Wuxian and Chinese Virtues of 忠孝仁义
There’s a lot of conversation about Wei Wuxian and how he struck out on his path without a concern for the Jiangs; about how he’s reckless and not giving a sh*t about his role within his society; about how he had a family and siblings and threw it all away for his sense of right and wrong. But the way I read his actions is within the context of the virtues of 忠孝仁义 (and how the virtues, especially 义, is ingrained in him via the Jiang sect motto). WWX’s major decisions can all be read as him acting in accordance with one or more of these virtues. Even when WWX is being his most irreverent self (and yes he’s rude and bring about a lot of second hand shame) he still remembers the we-self (to borrow from baoshan-sanren’s post) context as the head disciple of the Jiang Sect. Even when he seems to abandon everything, he didn’t abandon his understanding of these virtues.

How come it lead this? Yu Ziyuan thought fervently, her lips trembling in anger as Jiang Fengmian refused yet again her request to watch her spar.
She could only watch him go, purples robes swaying behind him as he walked in that calm manner that Yu Ziyuan once thought was charming.
Now, everything it brought to her was frustration, anger and confusion. How dare he make her watch his back everytime she sought him!
But it was not just to her requests to spar. Everything! Every single thing she asked for him to come, he didn't even seen to consider it!
A walk around Lotus Pier, drink tea together...
Yu Ziyuan felt her fist clench painfully at her side. She wouldn't be humiliated by a man that wouldn't even explain himself to his fiancé. She didn't do anything wrong, did she?
"Hmph!" Yu Ziyuan turned her own back, not willing to take anymore of this nonsense.

Jiang Fengmian, for all his growing affection for the Third Lady of Meishan Yu, wouldn't, couldn't tolerate her belittling his friends.
It was not just Wei Changze, but Cangse Sanren as well!

Yu Ziyuan, as strong and firm she was, just couldn't mince her words. It was as if she didn't care about how could it affect the others around it.
And Jiang Fengmian, even though thise insults weren't directed at him, felt like he was personally offended for seven generations.
He turned his back on her, because even though he disliked this part of her, his foolishness didn't allow him to confront her directly and simply talk about it.
Perhaps, had he just come to her and spill out his feelings, his marriage wouldn't have been as badly as it ended up being.

She thought nothing of calling Jiang Fengmian’s servant worthless and weak when he lost in their sparing match one afternoon. She had looked over to the Jiang sect heir, expecting him to be laughing at the other mans expense with the others or smiling at her, proud that his betrothed was so skilled. She hadn’t been expecting for his eyes to be like ice.
The change had been so sudden that it shocked her. Her fiance had been nothing but wonderful to her during her families visit to Lotus Pier. He had been kind and patient and gentlemanly to her.
But after she had mocked Wei Changze everything changed.

If Jiang Fengmian really followed his Sect's motto and attempted the impossible, he would love his son despite the fact that his marriage is a wreckage and Jiang Cheng resembles his mother so much.
*throws the mic at the crowd with full force, jumps right after, screams bloody murder, throws punches right and left, bites you*
I feel like this is something that gets overlooked so often is the fact that Wei Wuxiam wasn't the one who named Subian.
It was Jiang Fengman.
He just gave jfm a list of names but couldn't decide and saide whateva so jfm just named it Suibian.
Which means that Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling both got their naming sense from their father/grandfather. Like how jc named his dogs princess, jasmine, love and jl named his fairy.
And Wei wuxian in the end does name a spiritual weapon and it was chenqing (陈情) "setting forth one's thoughts and explaining one's actions." Further proving the fact that we are lucky Jin Ling's courtesy name was given by Wei Wuxian even tho its for pining which is an entire other post. And that Yunmeng Jiang has bad nameing sense.
Relating to my other post, but i headcanon that Jiang Fengmen naming wwx's sword Suibian is peak dad humor. That guy probably giggled himself to bed and be obnoxious about it like "San niang did you get it? did you get it?" Madame yu ignored wwx for the entire week.
After all, children of others could never compare to children of one's own.
She turned to Wei WuXian and pointed at him, "Wei Ying! Listen to me! Protect Jiang Cheng, protect him even if you die, do you understand?!" Madam Yu raged, "Did you hear me?! Don't talk nonsense to me, I'm only asking you- did you hear me?!" Wei Wuxian couldn't struggle out of Zidian. He could only nod his head.
Jiang Fengmian stared into his eyes. Suddenly, he reached out. Only after pausing in the air did he finally touch Jiang Cheng's head, slowly, "A-Cheng, be well."
Wei WuXian, "Uncle Jiang, if anything happens to you, he won't be well."
Jiang FengMian turned his eyes to him, "A-Ying, A-Cheng... you must look after him."

Madam Yu admonishes Jiang Yanli for peeling lotus seeds out of their pods for Wei Wuxian to eat, insulting her for the act by telling her she’s “not somebody’s servant!” Jiang Yanli ignores her and passes the fruits of her labor to Wei Wuxian, who eats them happily.
Madam Yu admonishes Jiang Cheng for practicing his archery skills with Wei Wuxian (and the other disciples), insulting him by calling him an “ignorant child, fooling around with others all the time” who are “splashing in sewers.” Jiang Cheng tells Wei Wuxian to shut up when Wei Wuxian attempts to speak in his own defense, while Jiang Cheng speaks only to defend himself.
Who’s braver?
I don't understand why people say Yu Ziyuan is the better parent while Jiang Fengmian is worse, whereas in the entire MDZS, Jiang Fengmian is the only one who tried to teach Jiang Cheng right from wrong (read how JFM tried to teach JC how to control his temper and his words after Xuanwu Cave).
But what about Yu Ziyuan? Aside from instilling the idea "Your Father doesnt like you" and mentally belittling her own children, what did she ever teach to Jiang Cheng? To Jiang Yanli?
She taught JC how to keep feeling unreasonable jealousy and envy of others. JFM never praised JC, but has YZY ever acknowledge JC either? What she did was to tell him that he is not good enough. Never good enough. What she did was keep comparing him to other people's children without ever acknowledging her own son's capability.
She taught JYL that the act of affection between people is servitude. Her, giving her Xiongdi a peeled lotus seed as an affectionate gesture between loved ones, was implied as humbling herself, as she was told "You are not a servant!"
Look at what good teaching this woman gave to her children.
And people say she is the better parent??
