Kotlc Fitz - Tumblr Posts

One thing we as a society need to talk about more is the fact that elves only wanting one kid/not twins is super messed up and also extremely stupid.

The reasoning is the fact that the firstborns have the best genetics but this has been disproven. By Fitz being a telepath while Alvar a vanisher, and Tam and Lin being a Hydrokinetic and SHade. Thses are the ones that came in my head but like for the millenniums Elvin society has existed no one thought that MAYBE having more then one kid wasn't so bad. Like its not like the Songs and Vackers were the first and only siblings in Elvin society. In conclusion Elves are stupid

I think one reason Alvar joined the neverseen wasn't only the Vacker Legacy but also the fact his parents had more children (Fitz and Biana) Hes says this somewhere in Flashback BUTTTTTT

Having more then one kid in Elven Society is taboo, ESPECIALLY since the age gap proves that Alden and Della weren't initially going to have more then Alvar but for some reason that changed, immedialty all heads turned to the 11 year old since why would Alden and Della, beloved by Elven Society randomly decide to have more kids. It showed that Alvar, at least in society's eyes was, not enough and failed. Fitz and Biana's existence was a proof of Alvar's failure to be the perfect son, to the point that Alden and Della HAD to resort to more kids. And don't think Alvar didn't know this since Elves are SHADY. I know these people had Alvar crying at night from all those side eyes and whispers. In a way Alvar could never truly love his siblings. At least until he lets go of his pain ig. In conclusion Alvar hates his famiy for betraying them.

Dude I just had the most batshit dream where at Neverseen of Everblaze's extra end story, Alvar was going mentally insane and the keeper krew were actually being so loud and annoying that Alvar ended up beating the shit out of Keefe and Biana, and a circus pulled up to congratulate Alvar on how well he beat keefe and Biana up. Also Fintan was there making smores for everyone and the gang was chill about his presence which confused me so much

omg thats like actual poetry right there, you put such thoughts into words in a way I couldn't even yet for one of my favorite kotlc ships. I get lots of readers see Stina in a far different light than we do but in this way I feel Stina is very accurately portrayed (at least in my headcannons haha). Thats so adorable and beautiful omg!!

Stina and Fitz hc part 2!

These are friendship hc but can also been seen as romantic ( @ohmygoly)

Stina has a habit of muttering to herself sometimes and Fitz can almost number catch what she's saying but he takes it pretty good

Fitz's leg will always have a limp (fight me Shannon) and Stina is perfectly aware of it (he's got a massive scar and has mentioned it himself) however all is the same in love and pillow fight wars

When Fitz feels comfortable he starts using his cane more often around Sterling Gables

Stina is allergic to affection and it's hilariously bad

She's obviously not actually allergic but she may as well be

She's a great person to ask for advice of picking a gift, HORRIBLE horrible person to ask for help giving a gift

Fitz has witness Stina chuck a midterm gift at Marella and Marella acted like it was a live bomb (she's bad at accepting gift)

When it comes to her birthday (fight me Shannon) Stina is a mess because A, she's hasn't had a birthday with friends since before she started Foxfire, she literally can't remember the last time she had a birthday and friends actually came but B, she's being shown way too much affection by people who aren't her parents and she's literally melting like the wicked witch of the farm

Fitz literally explained his gift to her because he thought the look on her face was confusion and not the violent emotional battle of Stina holding back tears realizing she's got real friends who know her well enough to pick really awesome gifts

Fitz was yapping his head off, Stina was trying not to cry and failing miserably

Maruca recorded

Stina picks up the phone pretty quickly to a lot of people's surprise and Fitz has gotten so used to her answering quickly he gets a little worried when the call goes to voicemail but figures she was busy with the horses (9 times out of 10 she was just busy and she has horse gossip to spill)

She's biased

Like so biased

It's not even subtle

Keefe breathes and Stina rolls her eyes but Fitz repeats himself twice because he thought no one heard him and Stina will give him her full attention even if they're in a big group

He asked for no pickles ahh friendship

The least neurodivergent horse girl and the most autistic little guy

Stina actually has friends the others don't know about and they've jokingly called themselves the Outcasts since at some point someone said you'd have to be an outcast to wind up with someone like Stina

The outcasts mostly consist of people Stina's met randomly throughout her life and they've had surprisingly civil interactions (it's almost like if Stina doesn't constantly feel the need to defend herself she's actually quite friendly)

The Outcasts have a special greeting using telekinesis to tug on each others pins when passing by the hallways at Foxfire and Fitz and Stina have made their own little special way of doing the Outcast greeting

Stina does great fast math but she fucking hates admiring she knows the answer meanwhile Fitz is determined to have his hand up

They sometimes hold hands and just like sit there while using their talents; Fitz reading Stina's thoughts and Stina reading Fitz's emotions

Sometimes they look like they're just sleeping or something and it's very silly but in truth they're chilling in their own little zone where Fitz and her are chatting in her mind and Fitz is remarking how much of his own emotions he can pick up from Stina's little thoughts

Stina has the funniest mental space Fitz has ever been in cause usually when he reads thoughts people have their own little head space and uniquish way their mind puts thoughts and shuffles things around

Stina has the ocean in her brain

Fitz thought it would be like a ranch or something but no he's under the water

Like literally there's little passing thoughts like schools of fish

Stina listened to the Little Mermaid soundtrack and it changed her brain chemistry

The snuggliest of snuggle buddies

They just look so cozy when they cuddle

Do not disturb they're resting

Stina's very straight forward with a lot of things and even more so with friends, they're her most precious treasures and she would rather explode the sun than lose them to some stupid misunderstanding and Fitz feels such a breath of fresh air when Stina will just get to the point with things

Fitz is considered an honorary Wayward by Stina which is a Neutral Territory word for someone who isn't exactly a citizen of the Territories but they're adjacent

Fitz is a pretty good listener but he always has a ton of questions but luckily Stina doesn't mind explaining them

He's horrible with hypotheticals and Stina will shake him silly while also cracking up because she asked him if he'd still love her if she was an imp and Fitz asked "why would you be an imp?"

He's so spoiled at the Heks house

Literally treated like a king but a beloved one not one worshiped from afar

Fitz comes over for just a simple hang out and he's all comfy in his chair with a bowl of fruit, his best friend, and a blanket

Stina, Fitz, and Maruca go on walks

No particular reason they just go around and walk and they chat and they giggle and sometimes they just sit and chat

It's how they find cool hang out spots for the next Horse Girl hang out

A lot of the time they're just walking and talking about literally anything and nothing and everything

Have I mentioned they're the true empath and telepath duo

I can't make this up they compliment each other so well

Stina doesn't tell Fitz to hide his anger or express it where she can't see

Despite being more sensitive to his emotions due to her talent Stina encourages Fitz to let it out, to talk about it, even if it's messy or the conversation goes sideways so they start shouting Stina's always stayed and embraced him when he needs it the most

Fitz has spent so long with all his emotions sitting in a weird spot and Stina helps him pick them up and let them out

She teaches him small empath tricks and Fitz realizes Stina's a pretty good teacher as she's patient and very adjustable

Can't say the same for Team V though lmao, they have to sign a damn term and conditions contract to peel any tiny bit of information out of her

Stubborn as a mule that one

Fitz gets a pass cause once again, Stina is unimaginably biased

Biana thinks this is bullshit but is also happy for her brother finding friends who care about him and understanding him in a way she, as his family, can't

She just wishes his choice of friends wasn't such a bullheaded Stina

I like your number 10. Its a very underground sorta thing but I appreciate the people who are down here with me and at least allow it to exist 😂😅. Because people like Fitz and Stina on tumblr too, I know no one's doing all that to get rid of their least favorite characters. Which funnily enough is how my ship started for these two in seventh grade. I love them now, did not back then

I had a couple of external sources of Stina x Fitz for a hot second there on my feed but it appears Stina x Jensi has taken over that tiny spot of Stina shipping space. There is nothing wrong with Stina and Jensi, I think they're cute, but now I feel like its my duty to post more about Stina and Fitz just so everybody is well annoyed and aware of them by the time I'm through haha. Who knows? Maybe Shannon will pull a surprise on us and it'll become canon (thats delusional).

I'm also still not a very good artist or writer so if I just get everybody else on board I'll be able to lovingly and gratefully soak up their beautiful content and deservedly give them all the compliments for their amazing talent

omg okay so I've decided I'm going to rank my favorite kotlc characters. This just includes the main kids though because I actually suck at caring about the adults in the fiction I read. I love Grady, Edaline, Della, Tiergan, etc etc but I would never rank them above the main cast so oh well. Uh I'll just do this list style I guess. You can just keep reading if you care (I'm new to this site so I hope I did that keep reading function right).

13. I feel so bad for this but I put Keefe here. Maybe if I reread the books I would change my mind but where I stand he's one of the more boring, cookie-cutter boys in the series. He's got the parental issues, the comedic mask, etc etc. I don't hate him, he's an interesting character who I ship with Sophie but I just couldn't put him above the other characters is all

12. I put Linh here. I think the way Shannon handles her personality is odd from what I remember. I think in my head I like her more than I like her in the books because she just turns into a mean girl kinda as Stina's friend and she doesn't understand Tam at all once he gets back from the Neverseen. She doesn't leave room for him to change from his experiences. Again, I need to reread the books but thats my quick take. PS. Its really weird how much she dislikes Rayni and I just think she needs to relax a little bit. If she can consider forgiving her parents she can trust Tam's judgement a little bit more.

11. I think Wylie's pretty cool. He's definitely older and more mature than a lot of the other guys are and he has potential to be very relevent to the plot right now. He's just a very mid character for me though, I just don't have many strong feelings for him.

10. Maruca is a pretty cool person. I admire her determination and her willingness to put herself out there to help even when Wylie protests. She is the only helpful Psionipath we know so she's special in a way and she is best friends with one of my favorite characters! I'm also very interested in her dynamic with Biana pre-Sophie and I just want to know how that switch to Stina happened in detail.

9. Jensi goes here. I love Jensi! I think he's very cheerful and it's very cool to have a talentless elf Sophie's age, and as one of her first friends at Foxfire. He's different from the rest of the drooly boys from the start which I find compelling and I would love to see another character compete with Sophie for talents. I remember he was the only other elf who could explode the ball with his mind like Sophie did. Thats pretty cool and unaddressed as of right now but seeing as he joined their table when Foxfire started back up I imagine he'll get a bit of development so yay! Also, I always like imagining him in a fun pre-Sophie dynamic with Dex and Marella as an opposite to Biana, Fitz, and Keefe (and I guess Maruca haha) and whenever I can imagine someone being in a cool group dynamic they usually go up in points so oops.

8. Ooh its Rayni time! I think she's a much more interesting flasher character than Wylie is at the moment. She was part of the Neverseen, she encouraged Sophie to take action (I still don't like how they reacted to Sophie. As if Sophie did the wrong thing) and best of all Rayni is close with Tam for unknown reasons and I love Tam and I trust his judgement and she seemed really nice in his pov at first. I also just really love a bit of that shade and flasher dynamic especially considering they're both pretty powerful supposedly and aided in Keefe's transformation. Sooo yeah! Rayni is pretty cool, I like her attitude but she needs to be a little less attached to that cloak and a little more ready to cooperate I think.

7. Sophie is the main character so naturally I won't like her the best lol. But I actually like her a bit better than I typically care for main characters so that's still a win! She's very strong and she's finding her way. She has a human perspective and cool abilities and I think that if she became more independent of the Black Swan she could be even cooler. I still love that she burned that hideout and stood up to Lord Cassius, and she's also respectful of people's mind privacy. I do wish that her view of the Lost cities was expanded or that we got to know more about the other character dynamics outside of Sophie but everyone wishes that for every side character so it's not her fault lol.

6. Marellaaaaa. She's cool, she has fire powers, and she has an interesting home and social life. I think its great she's also getting lessons from Fintan, would love more on that. Fire is my favorite element, btw. I already technically did an analysis on her but I find the way she rejected female friendships to be interesting more than annoying and I also would love to see her have more of a childhood friend dynamic with Dex but I guess thats just not how theyre set up. I also love her hair with the little braids, its very cute.

5. Top five baby! Biana is amazing! I love that she didnt like Sophie at first and I like how it wasnt like she actively bullied Sophie she just didnt make her her business, which is totally fair. I think Biana's struggle of being under Fitz's spotlight is a great dynamic to see play out and honestly Biana is just a girl's girl. She's feminine, she's strong, and I really wish she was the one to kill Vespera but instead it was Gisela and that still makes me upset. Oh well, Biana is amazing, strong, and feminine and I love that for her! I want to see more of her desire for attention or insecurities, maybe even her friendship with Maruca being reflected upon or renewed.

4. Dex is a technopath. Therefore he is cool, despite what he thinks about the ability. Have I been called a nerd my whole life? Yes. My opinion on cool definitely still counts I promise! He can't be simplified down to a cinnamon roll, he's got a lot of anger at the class system that needs to be addressed and is totally valid. I love his dynamic with Stina, his loyalty and innocence, his distrust of the Vackers, and now his concern for Rex. He's also infinitely cooler being a student of Tinker who I also think is really really awesome.

3. TOP THREE. Okay my third is Fitz Vacker. Yes, he has some anger issues but my boy is very generous and sweet and he is remorseful for his actions. I think that he's not as angry as everyone makes him out to be and I like his arc of being the golden boy much more than Keefe's dynamic of being the disappointment. And he has a lot more experience with the human world than most elves but I feel like fandom kinda throws that under the rug. I want to see his collection! And he bakes. I bake too so I love that he bakes and he bakes for people he cares about. Why would he commission Keefe to make a painting when he could've just baked Sophie's favorites and shown he cared in his own time consuming way? Anyways, I can already imagine his innocent charming smiles and I like brunettes too, sorry. And he definitely has a maturity Keefe doesn't have. I don't ship Sophitz, I just think Fitz is better. He does care about his status tho and what an interesting dynamic is it to have a hero who actively helps fight the bad guys but also still has to confront his own support of the class system in place? He's not bad, just morally grey!

2. I love Stina soooo so so so much. I know a lot of that is headcannon and fandom but I still do. She was mean in the first books and I think the mean girls are usually the most fun. I think its not only because you can channel your own internal aggression into them but also because they're a refreshing critic to the main character when everyone else enables them. I love that she takes care of unicorns and she probably rides them and I have channeled my minor love for music into Stina potentially having a huggggee love for it. If she ever discovered human music (unless she has in which case she's already in love). I love her friend group in the recent books and I think shes just herself and she attracts others who wsnt to be themselves. Now animal kidnapping and bullying is certainly not okay, but come on I wish Dex and Stina were portrayed on even playing fields because it would've been so much more fun and plausible that Dex and Stina both just equally hate and torment each other. She wants to be more involved in fighting and she has a loving home life so I love that for her. She'd be a great commentary on societal expectations which is such a contrast to Fitz actively supporting some of these expectations and that is so cool to me. Anyways, sorry I love Stina.

Okay, so it's hard to decide if I truly like Tam more than Stina but at this moment I will say that I do. Tam is a very interesting character. He's loyal to those he cares about but he makes himself appear to be very standoffish and suspicious. Its like, he has trouble letting you in but once you are he isnt letting you face anything alone. He's got his own morals and that includes not hurting anyone but he's not self righteous about it. I love his banter with Keefe, I love that he has common sense. I love that he is canonically a reader because I also love books and I feel like he could be known for having a great imagination or researching some cool things, whichever way his book preferences sway. His relationship with Rayni is so interesting and so is the shade/flasher dynamic. I think Tam and Keefe will have a different dynamic after this and I really want to see Tam address his parents more clearly and I want a conversation with Linh because she's trying to forgive her parents and also not trusting Tam or Rayni. Tam's whole aesthetic is so cool too. You might think he's emo, but he's not. He just likes black and that's totally fine. Shadow magic is also so interesting, and I have more thoughts on that for later. He has a relationship with the gnomes and the dwarves now technically. He has survival experience and he is one of the few who has full skill training that he could utilize. Anyways, I love love love Tam so there ya go. He's at the top and Keefe's at the bottom. Oops, not oops tho.

I've been thinking, what if the Kotlc squad became evil?

Sophie wouldn't join the Neverseen, stay with the black swan, or help the council--she wouldn't side with anyone. She would fight for herself, and what she believes in because that's what she wants to do. She knows she was created for a specific purpose, so screw that. She's sick of the rules and ready to break them.

Keefe would destroy anything that hurt any of the people he cares about. The world could burn for all her cares--he would do anything for the people he loved. Anyone who got in the way would not get away unscathed. He won't let people hurt the ones he loves anymore, because when they get hurt--he gets hurt.

Dex would sabotage things from the inside out. He would play along, and pretend to help everyone out, when in reality he's bringing them to their downfall. Oops, his machine "malfunctioned" and killed someone."Don't worry Dex, it's not your fault." No one would notice. No one ever notices him. Might as well use that to his advantage.

Fitz would lose himself in his anger. He would lose all control of his body, and simply destroy anything in his way, whether it be a piece of furniture or a member of his family. He doesn't care. What's the difference anyway? He's been uptight his whole life, now he can finally let loose, and god does it feel good for him.

Biana would be careful, but ruthless. She would plan every single step that she took, and every single move that she made. She would observe her enemies from the shadows, calculating what to do next. She would be patient, so when she finally strikes, she hits her enemy with everything she has. And after so long, people see her for who she really is, a force not to be reckoned with.

Marella would do nothing. She would sit back and watch as everyone worked their asses off, while she sits back and relaxes. They only come to her when they need something, so why should she bother? She burns. She lets everything burn. Her house, her clothes, her books, her parents, her friends, her world. Herself. Nothing matters if everything is gone. She watches the fire burn, and she does absolutely nothing.

Let me know if you guys want a part 2

Sophie: Hey guys, wanna hear all my secrets?

Fitz: I DON'T LIKE BEING A COGNATE OR A TELEPATH

Keefe: Hair is terrible. The last thing I need to worry about is my hair. Besides, I look terrible.

Biana: Hey, where's my plain black tunic? And my black boots?

Dex: What? I can't work with gadgets. It's useless- Oh, Sophie can you die Iggy back to gray?

Tam: Ooooh where's the butterfly? I want a puppy! The butterfly and puppy can be friends!

Linh: GRR STAY AWAY FROM ME I'M HAVING A BAD LIFE

Alden: Everyone, THERE'S A REASON TO WORRY!!!!!

ill always trust fitz over keefe. why? fitz reacts out of anger. it's his defense mechanism. he doesn't mean what he says and he admits he messed up and that he wasn't thinking. keefe, on the other hand, means every goddamn thing he does, and well... you can see why i'm wary

yall know that keefe and fitz are both at the top of the elven social structure... right? you know keefe didn't grow up some kind of poor disparaged boy... right? you know that while keefe had incredibly manipulative and emotionally unavailable parents, fitz had unrealistic expectations and a preexisting legacy (pun intended) he had to carry practically since he was born, and that only doubled when he manifested and was tasked with bringing sophie to the lost cities... right? so can we PLEASE appreciate how these boys found each other to take comfort in, and have some semblance of a normal school life despite their lives and upbringing that would have made them social outcasts otherwise?

How do you feel when someone calls Fitz a jerk after reading Legacy and saw Fitz lost control and shouted at Sophie ?

oh boy is this going to be controversial

i... don’t think his reaction was uncalled for.

let’s review.

throughout the series fitz’s family is described as, ‘practically royalty’, famous, one of the most important elven families. he also has many relatives who are/were important political figures.

that’s bound to cause an unhealthy obsession with one’s reputation.

fitz himself has been described as the golden boy. he has been one of the most powerful telepaths since the age of thirteen, a lot of attention has been put on him not only because he’s a vacker but also because of how talented he is. not to mention during his childhood he was constantly disappearing, which is sure to raise some eyes.

growing up under the public eye? it ain’t easy. even if you’re an elf.

his whole life he’s been expected to be perfect and have no cracks. you can’t expect him to change overnight- even for a girl he obviously cares deeply about.

in legacy, it takes fitz coming over to havenfield for sophie to actually talk to him, but she was anxious and scared- and for good reason. we all know fitz has never been very good at dealing with painful emotions healthily.

but he does.

“i want you to remember me sitting here with you, not freaking out or causing any of the drama you’ve been worrying about, okay? i know i haven’t always been great about that—but i’m working on it. so i need you to start working on trusting me—because having you avoid me like you’ve been doing really hurts. and finding out you’ve been hiding something this important totally sucks. and knowing you confided in other people before telling me makes it even worse.” legacy, pg 245

even fitz understands why sophie’s been avoiding him, and he’s trying to fix it. he tells her how he feels and what he wishes she would’ve done instead, but he gets why sophie did what she did and he doesn’t fault her for it.

if that’s not handling it maturely- then i don’t know what is.

then he screws everything up with his views on matchmaking. but thinking about his upbringing? those views are completely understandable and i can’t fault him for having them.

because sophie was brought up by humans, she can see how harmful matchmaking can be. because dex is the son of a bad match, he can see how harmful matchmaking can be. because no one else was raised with the pressure of being a vacker- besides biana but even she wasn’t raised with the ‘golden boy’ mentality fitz was- they can see how harmful matchmaking can be. you have to put yourself in his shoes instead of just writing him off as insentive. he doesn’t understand why it’s bad because he’s never experienced the downside of it. he’s only ever seen positives, but that doesn’t make him a bad person.

sure, he doesn’t try to understand, but that’s because no one else tries to explain how bad it’s bad and who it’s hurt, even sophie hasn’t- she’s only ever thought about it.

onto their actual breakup.

i think fitz has every reason to be upset, and i also think sophie has every reason to be upset. there’s no right or wrong.

the problem though, is the fact that neither of them try to understand why the other one feels the way they do. fitz doesn’t try to see why sophie let alvar go, and sophie doesn’t try to understand the full extent of all the emotions fitz is feeling. neither of them are very good at communicating, which is kinda ironic considering they’re cognates, which was the real downfall of their relationship. but they figure out that argument.

then they move on to sophie’s mom.

sophie continually tells fitz she can’t tell him who she is and at first, fitz gets it... until sophie says she can’t tell him- ever.

we all know the most important thing to fitz is trust. he doesn’t realize why sophie won’t tell him because he’s always trusted sophie to tell him whatever whenever she’s ready. there couldn’t be anything so bad she can’t tell him, could there?

but he lets it go.

then he asks about the match.

to him, it’s a simple question, because to him, matchmaking is simple.

to sophie, it’s the question that breaks everything, because to her, matchmaking is anything but simple.

fitz goes onto to talk about how they should discuss her decision together and how it doesn’t just affect her. and honestly? i don’t think he was out of line.

it’s clear now that this is something fitz wants for life, and a relationship isn’t just one person. it’s sacrifice, and it’s compromise.

so fitz is right. sophie deciding she’ll stay unmatchable doesn’t just affect her. it affects him too, because he doesn’t want anyone else. he says so in flashback. at the end of the day, it is still her choice, but that doesn’t mean her and fitz can’t discuss it.

before he leaves fitz repeats why he doesn’t understand, and it’s not his fault he doesn’t. sophie chooses not to help him understand by not telling him who her mom is, but that doesn’t mean she’s to blame either. once again, neither one of them try to see the other persons side. it wasn’t fitz’s fault they broke up and it wasn’t sophie’s fault. fitz isn’t a jerk for think her decision is the wrong one. it’s an opinion. we all have them. fitz gets to have his, but sophie gets to have hers too.

the only reason we think fitz was in the wrong is because we only see how sophie feels, we only hear her thoughts, we only see the stress she’s been under. we don’t see fitz’s feelings. we’re behaving just like sophie and fitz. refusing to listen because of our emotions.

i truly think if they’d both sat down and talked calmly, ignoring how they feel and instead listening to what the other one thinks, maybe their breakup could’ve been avoided.

sorry this came out so long lol but this was such a good question and something i’ve been dying to talk about so thank you so much for your ask!!

growing up under the public eye? it ain’t easy. even if you’re an elf.

his whole life he’s been expected to be perfect and have no cracks. you can’t expect him to change overnight- even for a girl he obviously cares deeply about.

in legacy, it takes fitz coming over to havenfield for sophie to actually talk to him, but she was anxious and scared- and for good reason. we all know fitz has never been very good at dealing with painful emotions healthily.

but he does.

“i want you to remember me sitting here with you, not freaking out or causing any of the drama you’ve been worrying about, okay? i know i haven’t always been great about that—but i’m working on it. so i need you to start working on trusting me—because having you avoid me like you’ve been doing really hurts. and finding out you’ve been hiding something this important totally sucks. and knowing you confided in other people before telling me makes it even worse.” legacy, pg 245

even fitz understands why sophie’s been avoiding him, and he’s trying to fix it. he tells her how he feels and what he wishes she would’ve done instead, but he gets why sophie did what she did and he doesn’t fault her for it.

if that’s not handling it maturely- then i don’t know what is.

then he screws everything up with his views on matchmaking. but thinking about his upbringing? those views are completely understandable and i can’t fault him for having them.

because sophie was brought up by humans, she can see how harmful matchmaking can be. because dex is the son of a bad match, he can see how harmful matchmaking can be. because no one else was raised with the pressure of being a vacker- besides biana but even she wasn’t raised with the ‘golden boy’ mentality fitz was- they can see how harmful matchmaking can be. you have to put yourself in his shoes instead of just writing him off as insentive. he doesn’t understand why it’s bad because he’s never experienced the downside of it. he’s only ever seen positives, but that doesn’t make him a bad person.

sure, he doesn’t try to understand, but that’s because no one else tries to explain how bad it’s bad and who it’s hurt, even sophie hasn’t- she’s only ever thought about it.

onto their actual breakup.

i think fitz has every reason to be upset, and i also think sophie has every reason to be upset. there’s no right or wrong.

the problem though, is the fact that neither of them try to understand why the other one feels the way they do. fitz doesn’t try to see why sophie let alvar go, and sophie doesn’t try to understand the full extent of all the emotions fitz is feeling. neither of them are very good at communicating, which is kinda ironic considering they’re cognates, which was the real downfall of their relationship. but they figure out that argument.

then they move on to sophie’s mom.

sophie continually tells fitz she can’t tell him who she is and at first, fitz gets it... until sophie says she can’t tell him- ever.

we all know the most important thing to fitz is trust. he doesn’t realize why sophie won’t tell him because he’s always trusted sophie to tell him whatever whenever she’s ready. there couldn’t be anything so bad she can’t tell him, could there?

but he lets it go.

then he asks about the match.

to him, it’s a simple question, because to him, matchmaking is simple.

to sophie, it’s the question that breaks everything, because to her, matchmaking is anything but simple.

fitz goes onto to talk about how they should discuss her decision together and how it doesn’t just affect her. and honestly? i don’t think he was out of line.

it’s clear now that this is something fitz wants for life, and a relationship isn’t just one person. it’s sacrifice, and it’s compromise.

so fitz is right. sophie deciding she’ll stay unmatchable doesn’t just affect her. it affects him too, because he doesn’t want anyone else. he says so in flashback. at the end of the day, it is still her choice, but that doesn’t mean her and fitz can’t discuss it.

before he leaves fitz repeats why he doesn’t understand, and it’s not his fault he doesn’t. sophie chooses not to help him understand by not telling him who her mom is, but that doesn’t mean she’s to blame either. once again, neither one of them try to see the other persons side. it wasn’t fitz’s fault they broke up and it wasn’t sophie’s fault. fitz isn’t a jerk for think her decision is the wrong one. it’s an opinion. we all have them. fitz gets to have his, but sophie gets to have hers too.

the only reason we think fitz was in the wrong is because we only see how sophie feels, we only hear her thoughts, we only see the stress she’s been under. we don’t see fitz’s feelings. we’re behaving just like sophie and fitz. refusing to listen because of our emotions.

i truly think if they’d both sat down and talked calmly, ignoring how they feel and instead listening to what the other one thinks, maybe their breakup could’ve been avoided.

sorry this came out so long lol but this was such a good question and something i’ve been dying to talk about so thank you so much for your ask!!

fitz when he was looking for sophie: there’s nothing rich folks love more than going downtown and slummin’ it with the poor! :)
