Practical Effects - Tumblr Posts
Sorry, gotta gush about the smallest fucking detail in the fnaf movie for a second.
SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT (I guess?)
So the part where Abby is hiding and Foxy is walking muppet style around chasing her and he steps on one of the ball pit balls?
I can't stop thinking about the practical effect there. No way the puppet leg they made was heavy enough to actually smash it so easily, and if you look closely you can see that the ball seems to start crinkling a little prematurely as the foot drops down on it.
(i have neither pictures nor gifs as we all know, YET)
So my guess is, they fed something through the puppet leg to be able to suck the air out of it (it looks like the ball is attached to the foot in that moment as well) to make it look like a super heavy metal foot is crushing it.
So much effort for such a small two second long effect and it made my stupid puppet Henson Creature Shop loving brain SO happy.
What a flex. I love this movie and everything that went into it.

Behind the scenes Labyrinth. This always makes me smile :)
I think that one of the reasons The Lord of the Rings still holds up, in my mind at least, is that it still used the whole “make a miniature version of the set piece” school of filming.

Like… that’s shit is just cool.
“Maybe these are bad movies and you actually only like them because they have puppets in.”
Maybe you should shut up. Don’t listen to them, Labyrinth, they don’t know what they’re talking about
I’ve been on tumblr now for a little bit and it’s kind of hard to find people to talk to so, if you like any of the following pleaseeeeee talk to me I love silly little chit chats
- Queen (the band)
- David Bowie/Labyrinth
- anything that uses really cool puppets or practical effects
- The Muppets
- How I Met Your Mother
- Friends
- Little Shop Of Horrors
- musical theatre
Please please say hello, I’d love to meet people :)

I love seeing how practical effects can work!

This is what I feel elevates Tokusatsu above all other forms of special effects: sheer spontaneity. You would never see Ray Harryhausen spend hours recreating Thriller with the Argonauts skeletons or have Stan Winston program his hydraulic Tyrannosaurus to take someone on a lovely stroll through downtown, but with Tokusatsu, all you need is a costume and a wiling suit performer to create something amazing.

Never forget the video of Ultra monsters doing “Thriller” (X).

I like to watch bad low-budget movies, and I found the film monsters (1993) (Russian). They use live action footage of small animals as the "monsters". As a rat owner, I find it hilarious how they try to make the rats look threatening. (No animals were actually harmed in filming)
They don't even have to be always great practical effects, they can be a bit cheesy and with small hiccups where for a fraction of the second you can spot the puppeteers left elbow in one specific scene and you can have a little giggle at peeking behind the curtain of the movie magic. It's fun
I am so fucking sick of CGI this, CGI that. give me back on location filming (when possible), give me back intricate hauntingly realistic animatronics and puppets, give me back handmade props & masks & skillful make up……..just give me back practical effects I am begging
so i already went on a tangent abt how good the acting was in ep. 5 so lemme just gush abt the prosthetics for a hot sec because wowwww i'm absolutely obsessed
if you haven't heard already, they got barrie gower as prosthetic designer (he's the guy behind vecna on stranger things and the night king on game of thrones). his shit's been amazing. i cannot recommend following him on insta (@barriegower) enough (plus he recently posted some clicker concept for the show!). the props team also reportedly consulted some naughty dog concept designers who worked on og tlou for both creating the infected prosthetics and set design which (if true) fucks soooo hard.
everything abt how they tackled bringing the infected to live action is insane. it feels so meticulously done from concept to execution.
there's the obv. practical effects/ prosthetics/stuntmen over cgi which i love. i'm sure that with the budget hbo gave the team, cgi infected would've still looked fine, but going the practical route is *chefs kiss.*
kudos to the actors underneath all that make up as well! that terrifying clicker kid was played by 9 year old contortionist and self proclaimed "rhythmic gymnast" skye belle cowton and the bloater was played by stuntman adam basil (@adam.basil on insta. totally recommend checking him out there bc he posts a lot about his acting gigs). they ended up using a good amount cgi for the bloater's movements in the end but the suit they made still looks so cool.
even where the designs deviate from the game it's still done within respect to the og design aesthetics and what makes tlou tlou. the tendrils didn't just come out of nowhere; they were in the early concepts for the og game.
there's a lot more i can say about this but shdkshdj take my adhd rambling aight gn.
