The is a tardigrade, aka water bear. And this little thing can survive the most extreme conditions — boiling heat, freezing temperatures, even the vacuum of space. But what’s so special about this little guy?

Well this microorganism can survive from just above absolute zero, to well above the heat of boiling water. Pressures greater than the deepest point of the ocean by 600%. They can live without food or water for 10 years.

The European Space Agency even sent some tardigrade up to space, under an experiment called TARDIS — tardigrades in space. Where the results were stunning. Many of them survived the solar radiation, vacuum conditions, freezing temperature, dehydration and other extreme conditions. And.. It didn’t even affect their reproductive behaviors.

So what? It can live in extreme conditions, why does that matter?

Well the tardigrade have showed us that where life can exist, it will exist. Which makes us realize, maybe life doesn’t need to exist under all the conditions we once believed. If tardigrades can exist under these conditions, what about extraterrestrials?

Knowing about the tardigrade, there are so many more possibilities of finding extraterrestrial life. Now its up to time, and the work of our diligent scientists to show us where it exists — I know its hiding out there somewhere!

Ode to the Tardigrade

A Tardigrade, also known as a water bear, is a resilient creature. They can survive in some of the most extreme environments (think boiling water and almost absolute zero) and are known for their strange gait, which look like a bear’s walk. Inspired after watching a feature on these little monsters in Neil Degrasse Tyson’s Cosmos, designers Eric Ho and Kostika Spaho got to work and created a 3D sculpture of the Tardigrade now available on Shapeways. These eight-legged creatures can even be printed in stainless steel, brass, silver, and 14k gold! Get a little trophy celebrating one of nature’s most gritty inhabitants.

[Announcement] Operation: Tardigrade Costume is a success

This year’s Halloween dream was realized: TARDIGRADE.

  Well hello there.

“How did you decide to dress as a tardigrade?” I was asked by one or two people.

First I saw a bunch of people Facebooking this image about a year ago. It fucking freaked me out.

So freaked out that I kept coming back to it and eventually reveled in its horror. 

Then I went to the Tardigrade Weekend event at CalAcademy, which was fun. 

That’s about it. 

What’s fun about imagining yourself in a tardigrade costume is how puffy and creepy and un-sexy it is. In a sea of sexy costumes, you stand out.

If you want to make your own tardigrade costume…

1. Consider buying THE text on tardigrades, The Biology of Tardigrades, to get a better idea of all the different biological features they have.

3. Peep my costume recipe below. IMO you can make your tardigrade any color, but it should be monochrome. I made mine gray, because it seemed to fit my experience of it when I’d looked through a microscope. 

Vanessa’s tardigrade costume recipe 

Puffy sleeping bag with a drawstring opening

3 sweatshirts

Fiberfill

8 large claw hair clips

Gloves

Footwear (I chose leggings and flats)

Large coffee cup with the bottom cut out

Acrylic craft paint

Fabric scissors, needle, thread, string, and safety pins

Assembly instructions: Cinch the drawstring as far as you can, so that your face won’t be visible but the mouthpiece will still fit through it. Cut open the bottom of the sleeping bag and hem it. Figure out where your arms should come out, and cut and hem holes for them, like sewing a large buttonhole. Sew the hair clips to the cuffs of two of the sweatshirts, then cut the arms off and stuff them with fiberfill. Attach the arms to the sleeping bag in two symmetrical pairs. Attach clips to your gloves and footwear. Paint the coffee cup and attach a string to tie round your head. Put on the sweatshirt and gloves and footwear, step into the sleeping bag, zip it up most of the way, then tie the cup onto your mouth and CAREFULLY fit it through the hole in the drawstring. Zip yourself up the rest of the way. Waddle around, frighten your friends, and paste the wikipedia link for tardigrades into IMs for the curious.
