Dark Thranduil edit. I did this one a while back when my name was still FallenAngel889

Thranduil, 03.2024
I'm really dissatisfied with the way he looks. I don't think I captured his likeness at all. But I'm working on Gimli now and the beard is killing me (I chose a high contrast reference so the hair is impossible) and I wanted to post anything. So here he is.
It's a bit funny, really. Him and unfinished Gimli are sitting together on my desk. King of Mirkwood and his son in law. A family reunion;)
Agreed π―π
According to the lay known as βThe Fall of Gil-Galadβ, upon this elven-kingβs death, he was βthe last whose realm was fair and free, between the Mountains and the Seaβ.
β¦say what now? Excuse me, dear Middle-earth minstrels, but you seem to have forgotten about THIS GUY:

King Thranduil Oropherion is the Sindarin counterpart of the βHigh King of the Noldorβ, and therefore comparable to the renowned High King Gil-Galad, but is sadly not given the same amount of recognition in stories and songs.
Allow me the honor of βsingingβ the ways Thranduil is very similar to Gil-Galad:
(1) Both were born in the First Age, and as young elves witnessed the destruction of the cities they lived in: Thranduil in Doriath and Gil-Galad in the Havens of the Falas. They were exposed to war and bloodshed at an early age and experienced living as refugees.
(2) Both survived and possibly participated in the War of Wrath. (You know, that really terrible, bloody, decades-long war that literally broke the world--that war.) According to certain interpretations of the film βThe Hobbit: Desolation of Smaugβ, Thranduil likely did fight in the War of Wrath, where he βfaced the great serpents of the northβ. Elven warriors of the First Age were incredibly fierce warriors out of necessity, and if Thranduil survived those great battles when he was about 150 years old, that makes him extra badass.
(3) Both inherited their kingships from their forefathers. Gil-Galadβs claim to the Noldor throne (like his canon parentage) is a little murky, but he is related to Fingolfin whose line was pretty much wiped out, so only Elrond or Galadriel could have challenged his claim (which they didnβt). Thranduilβs claim is far more direct as the son of the first King of the Woodland Realm and ruler of the Silvan people.
(4) Both were warrior kings. Because canon stories of Thranduil are very sparse, we donβt know for sure which wars he did or didnβt participate in during the Second Age. What DID he do those 2,000+ years while his father was establishing and ruling the realm? Honing his warrior skills seems to be a fair hypothesis. How else would he have developed the deadly skills he exhibited at the Battle of Five Armies? How else would he have kept the foul creatures of Dol Goldur at bay without a magic ring? Itβs very possible heβs seen more time on the battlefield than official historical accounts say.

(5) Both fought at the Battle of Dagorlad, during the War of the Last Alliance. Gil-Galad fought hard and valiantly to the end at Mordor, slaying Sauron by his own spear. Because Oropher died at the first onslaught, it was likely that Thranduil had to exit the war early, either to bury his father and their slain soldiers, or because he himself was injured. There may have been enough time for him to rejoin the Alliance at the Siege of Barad-dΓ»r, to avenge his father and salvage his familyβs honor and pride. But Thranduil, whom people mistakenly dismiss as arrogant or proud, was a king who valued his people and the soldiers under his command. It would have been easy glory to join the Siege since by then the war had been all but won (and won by the blood of his people, might I add). Thranduil chose to stay with his kin and help them through the loss of their king and many loved ones, and to reassure them that they were in good hands with him as their new ruler.
Itβs a big, sad shame that Tolkien was not able to write more stories about Thranduil, his family, and the Mirkwood elves. Based on the theories we, his fans, are able to formulate about him, it seems he may have been the most successful, even most benevolent, Elven ruler of them all. He will just have to get his glory and renown in the βsongsβ and βlaysβ of our headcanons and fanfics.

This was getting unbearable, I thought to myself. Climbing the stairs leading to the gardens was not what I was referring to, though they were rather tiring.
The unbearable part was having to live like my heart wasn't beating.
Let me explain.
I moved into Mirkwood years ago, under the request of Lord Elrond of Rivendell. Assumedly, he'd thought that my experience with growing plants might be helpful in a place actively combating giant spiders.
He was right, as he normally is, but not for the reason he thought.
Instead, I'd found myself the right-hand of the Elven King himself. For no apparent reason at all - no background in diplomacy or in royal affairs helped rationalize just how I got here.
But that is not why you're here, is it?
Over the years by the King's side, I'd grown close to him. We shared hopes and heartbreaks, dreams and despairs. It felt healing, I suppose.
That closeness breached professionalism at times. It scared me.
Once that line was breached, there was no going back.
I had not even earned my position here. I was not a native to Mirkwood. How in Middle-Earth would Mirkwood's elves ever agree to such a union?
They would not, I decided. It made what I was about to do much easier.
I could not stop my heart from beating for long. I had to leave, quickly, before the traitorous thing choose to turn against logic yet again.
Surely Lord Elrond would welcome me back to Rivendell if I explained my situation, right?
The thought of leaving Mirkwood, the place I call home, as well as the king who rules it, forces my heart to skip a beat.
I must learn to live without a heart, I think. If only to curb the pain to come.
Rushing to the stables, I see my horse at the far end. My heart begins contracting in my chest. That is my cue to hurry the hell up, as the humans say.
One step after another. All to take me further away from here.
I clutch at my horse's hair. She dips her head down in recognition, letting me freely hug her close. My closest companion, now that I'm leaving.
It feels a little bit like burning at stake. Not that I know how that feels, but it's the most similar thing, I suppose.
My heart is being cooked in the flames of love.
I close my eyes to center myself for a minute. And like a good pie, I savor the moment.
Sighing, I open my eyes. "Let's get going, starlight."
"Go where?"
The sudden intrusion is startling, and I turn to look behind me.
Thranduil.
He looks stunning as always, like a star that's descended from the heavens. His eyes, the color of a clear sky, zeroed in on me.
"Well?" He tilts his head slightly. Every day I forget how speechless he makes me.
"I... I was just planning on taking a short ride around, my King."
To this he lifts an eyebrow. And smirks, damn him.
"Oh? May I accompany you, then?" He knows I can't deny him.
Not wanting him to know my true intent, I nod at him, "Certainly."
The slight smile gracing his face made everything else disappear. For a single moment, all I could see was him.
It took a minute to prepare, then we were off. Into the beautiful forest we call home.
~~~
I was busy admiring the tall grey-brown bark of the trees we were riding past when he broke the silence.
"Do you like it here?"
The question surprises me. Both in its suddenness and in its intimacy.
"Of course, my King. Why do you ask?"
I can feel his eyes on me, studying the map of my face. I can feel the blood pumping in my veins.
"If that's so, why does Elanor speak of your mentioning departure from Mirkwood?"
To this I advert my gaze. Caught.
He continues. "You seem to be more and more distant than usual. I can't help but wonder why."'
"Because I'm in love with you" My heart screams. I stay silent.
Thranduil notices this, and both his eyes and voice turn sharp.
"What are you hiding?"
I sigh softly. "My king, I must return to Rivendell."
He studies me, not believing a word.
"And I must leave soon. I did not want to cause any more burden to your shoulders, my King. That is why I did not tell you."
"You were never a burden. And did you not think of the panic your disappearance would cause in the palace? The panic you would cause me? You cannot just leave like that. Not without a proper reason." He gets more and more animated as he speaks, and I feel my temper rising to match his.
"I need to leave-"
"No you don't!"
"And go to Rivendell and-"
"Not without a reason! You can't just leave! I forbid it!"
His voice echoes in the forest. Mine follows suit.
"I love you! That's why I have to go!"
Ruined. That's what this friendship is.
He, for once, falls silent. His hair shifts as he turns to look at me, truly look at me. His eyes, once cold, are now softer.
"I love you too. And that's why you have to stay."
...What.
I've started sculpting this Thranduil with intention to go as much stylised as possible... But apparently this is all I'm capable of π Before deliver me heavy critique, keep in mind pls that I'm hard surface modeler, not character artist π And I'm not myself when I see section "chromatic aberration" in post process options xD
