I Wanted To Do A Fic Rec List For Buddie, But Also I Hate Deciding Things And I'm Bad At Writing Pretty

I wanted to do a fic rec list for buddie, but also I hate deciding things and I'm bad at writing pretty things about the fics I like. So I just went through my roughly 200 ao3 buddie bookmarks, pulled out the ones that, as stated above, made my brain go !!!, and put them in alphabetical order.

There's 50 fics in total, so I broke it down to 5, more manageable, posts of 10 fics each. This is the first post. I hope you enjoy.

Part Two | Part Three | Part Four | Part Five

a flower in a gun (a bird in flight) by @extasiswings (T, 3k)

Even if Buck felt the same—and Eddie isn’t convinced of that, doesn’t have the arrogance to assume—what right does he have to say please, to say wait, to ask Buck to put his life on hold indefinitely while Eddie sorts through the tangled mess in his head in the hope that one day he’ll finally be ready? He can’t be that selfish. Especially not with Buck. [Or: in the aftermath of the shooting, love endures.]

a hundred little pieces by @renecdote (G, 3k)

The tap is bloody, the sink stained red, paper towels wadded up and abandoned in it, soaked with blood, and Eddie can taste his heart in his throat, sour and metallic, because he’s doing the math and—shit. Kitchen + blood + blood thinners = only bad things. (Multiplied by Buck, which equals Eddie’s blood pressure jumping through the roof.) In which Eddie takes care of Buck.

And if you swear that you’re alright, I’m not gonna try and change your mind by @homerforsure (T, 8k)

"Buck wants to shake him. He’s staring at him right now and Eddie looks haunted. He looks exhausted, like he could sleep for a hundred years, and there’s a wildness in the depths of his eyes as he talks about moving on that betrays how desperately he wants it to be true and how much of a lie it really is. Eddie looks the way Buck’s sure he looks right now and if Eddie would just say that he’s not okay, Buck might feel a little less alone. A little less crazy. A little less broken." Buck and Eddie both struggle after being held hostage.

and longer by far by @buckactuallys (T, 14.5k)

“Eddie’s been married once, and after Shannon asked him for a divorce and then died before they could do anything about it, he figured that was it for him. One marriage with all its ups and downs is enough for a lifetime. Granted, he didn’t think he’d fall in love with Buck and be lucky enough for that love to be returned.” OR Everyone seems to expect Eddie to propose to Buck any minute now, which is annoying because Eddie doesn’t want to get married again. He's sure of that. Or is he?

at the kitchen table by @oatflatwhite (T, 1.5k)

“Have you ever thought about us? Together?” * Post-5.03. Eddie's single. Buck's not. They talk about the elephant in the room.

Bases Loaded by @lamardeuse (E, 2k)

Eddie asks to go slow.

This fic is a lovely piece about Buck being patient with Eddie while he slowly gets used to the idea of being sexually intimate with another man.

Before the Night Fades by @milenadaniels (T, 8.5k)

“I have a bottle of champagne, four champagne flutes, one engagement ring to go into one of those champagne flutes, and a note to deliver it all to table 34 with dessert,” Tomas explains, wide-eyed, throwing his hand back to the prep station where said champagne is waiting on ice next to four flutes and a small ring box. “Okay?” “Okay so there’s two men and two women and I have no idea who’s getting proposed to. I’m not even 100% on who came with who." --- Or, EddieAna and BuckTaylor double date and it ruins everyone's night.

Please read this fic. It's a very funny and well written outsider pov. A true gem.

Burn a bridge, learn how to swim by WatermelonShots (M, 13k)

In which there is some unexpected making out, some pining, one third of an existential crisis and a lot of unhelpful advice. Not necessarily in that order.

This is the first part of the Burn a bridge, learn how to swim series, which is maybe my number one favorite fic series for Buddie. The internal monologues are so amusing and awkward and charming.

Buy Back the Secrets by @littlespooneven (T, 19k)

He casts his gaze to the right, to the voice he’d heard a minute ago and the hand still on his shoulder. And, well. Okay. So Buck may have just been unconscious for an indeterminable length of time but he doesn’t think he’s exaggerating when he says the guy leaning over his bedside is one of the most attractive people he’s seen in a long time. Especially when his face splits into a smile that rivals the brightness of the hospital lights that almost just fucking blinded Buck a second ago. “Welcome back, hotshot,” the guy says and it sounds fond – familiar – and Buck honestly has no idea who this guy is. His brown hair is dishevelled on top of his head and his eyes look tired but then Buck notices the LAFD t-shirt so- alright. Someone from the firehouse, maybe? But he’s pretty sure he’d remember a face like that. * After getting hurt on a call, Buck wakes up thinking it's 2018. AKA Buck can't remember who Eddie is but he's pretty sure everyone's lying when they say they're "just friends."

Ciara is the one who lured me into the buddie fandom. Any fic by her is worth a read, but this is one of my favorites.

Close My Eyes and Stumble (Right Into Your Love) by @hmslusitania (M, 21.5k)

Eddie's PTSD is just that little bit worse and when he moves to Los Angeles, instead of joining the LAFD, he joins dispatch. Which is all good and fine, except for this one firefighter he keeps ending up talking to.

This lovely fic is an AU where Eddie is the one who works at dispatch in s1 instead of Abby.

“You know I despise you, right?”

“Oh, despise. Such a big word, baby,” Minho drawled with an obnoxious smirk, the one that simultaneously made you want to rip his hair out and kiss those perfectly delectable lips of his, “If it’s any consolation, I abhor your presence as well.”

“Wonderful,” you crossed your legs, a smile creeping onto your face as you leaned backward in your chair, “So why exactly are you here?”

Minho laughed, “The same reason I presume that you’re here for. A hundred dollars to put up with you is a tempting offer.”

Okay okay y’okay laughing my ass off at that addition aside I just wanted to add in for jarringly tone-shifting real talk that honestly, the third movie was not nearly brave enough!

The actual canon story was, but you don’t really understand the depravity of Beckett through the movies alone, and you especially don’t if you are unaware of how his backstory with Jack actually played out.

For anyone unaware- and was not explained well enough but definitely alluded to and implied in the final cut of the trilogy-

The entire catalyst for most of the whole plot of all this is that Jack liberated a shipment of slaves from the East India Trading Company.

I’m not exaggerating. Not remotely.

The gist of how him and Cutler go back so far was that they both worked for the EITC, Jack captaining a cargo ship under Beckett. Well, one day Beckett puts Jack up to delivering a shipment of slaves for one of his superiors, and Jack, having a spine and being an actual chaotic neutral/good type, basically said “screw this” and freed the entire cargo load.

For god only knows what reason, they cut out an entire scene from At World’s End that was going to recount the perfect little summary of this story and it would have elaborated on so much of what these two’s deal was. Included below because screw the writers for letting any audience member miss out on this delicious exchange.

I still can’t believe we had this omitted from the final cut, including such a banger line as this from Jack.

Okay Okay Yokay Laughing My Ass Off At That Addition Aside I Just Wanted To Add In For Jarringly Tone-shifting

Which again, I find so stupid because this was such influential lore for the whole everything that sprung the narratives of the first movies’ characters.

Jack’s single heroic action of defying this ruthless, oppressive company by freeing those people are the first snowballing cause behind:

Jack becoming a pirate and Beckett’s Hatred of him - By committing literal treachery and making Cutler look like a complete idiot to his higher ups, he screwed over that monster’s career ambitions at the time, a humiliation that took years of clawing and struggle to earn the sort of prestige he desired within the company again. This is the reason Beckett himself gave the order to have Jack branded as a pirate and the Wicked Wench (the exact same vessel that would later be revived as the Black Pearl) destroyed. These were the “marks” he talked about them leaving on each other in the parts of the scene that were kept in. This is the reason he wants Jack dead more than anything else in the world.

The Existence of the Black Pearl - After Cutler saw to the burning and sinking of the Wicked Wench, Jack contracted with Davy Jones to raise the vessel up again as the legendary ghost ship. This made him the captain over the crew that included Barbossa, who led a mutiny upon him and ignorantly plundered the cache of cursed gold. The same crew that included Bootstrap Bill, William’s father, who sent his son away with the single piece Barbossa’s crew spent years chasing after until Elizabeth, Jack, and an adult Will got involved with and did the entire first movie about it.

Jack’s debt to Davy Jones - In which he agreed his soul to serve 100 years aboard the Dutchman in return for 13 years commanding the Black Pearl. That much they explained in Dead Man’s Chest but did you stop and wonder why when Jack tried to haggle for trading other souls in place of his own, Jones smugly set the price at 100 people? That’s the number of slaves he freed. It was no arbitrary price. It was another cruel lash he could use to dig into his victim, punishing Jack further for the good deed that got him into this situation in the first place.

Also the entire chain of hijinks that led to the third movie - Ergo, the East India Trading Company coming into possession of Jones’ heart, and Elizabeth leaving Jack for dead because of the aforementioned unpaid debt. And obviously the significance/urgency to our main characters (especially Jack and William) regarding why Jones needs to be killed. And Beckett.

Ah, and Beckett.

So in a funny twist of fate, instead of imagining all of this as “Jack’s good deed coming back to haunt him”, it’s actually the slow burn story of Beckett’s own karma catching up to him. Of the entire EITC’s depravity and inhumanity becoming the cause that finally ruined their claim over the sea and world.

When I hear Beckett’s savory last words, as he faced his final moments, I always feel like it was his pathetic attempt at an explanation to the gates of judgement themselves. In that moment when his world was at end around him, he reflected on every poor decision he made that brought him to this, his entire career and life laid out, flashing before him in those splinters and embers.

What does he have to say for himself, in that moment before he knows the fires of Hell will claim him? The same excuse he gave to every person he broke, the same to every person he destroyed, and the same to everyone that opposed him.

Okay Okay Yokay Laughing My Ass Off At That Addition Aside I Just Wanted To Add In For Jarringly Tone-shifting

The same as he always told himself to get this far.

Okay Okay Yokay Laughing My Ass Off At That Addition Aside I Just Wanted To Add In For Jarringly Tone-shifting

pirates of the caribbean really introduced an eldritch octopus man who kills indiscriminately and torments the dead as their poster villain and then you watch the movies and it's like, "oh no, actually the worst villain in this series is a small white british man who functions as the herald of capitalism" and that was very very brave of them

The Upside Down is Will's Mind Part Two

I highly recommend reading the first part of this theory (here) before continuing! This post is way longer than the original because I wanted to get all of my thoughts about this out in one place so here it is:

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two
The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two
The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

Dustin explains that El opened the Mothergate in 1983 by making a psychic connection to the demogorgan and assumes that Vecna is doing the same with his victims. Why would psychic connection open a gate to the Upside Down if the UD is not related to the mind? If gates to the UD are being opened through psychic connection, how did the original gate in 1979 open? El was not psychically contacting anyone when she originally banished Vecna, or was she?

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two
The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

Right before El banishes Vecna, she sees a cloudy red tunnel and a memory of her birth. This initially seems like El about to meet death, but what if it was actually a lifeline? The red cloudy tunnel looks similar to Vecna’s cloudy mindscape when he’s searching for victims. What if El was unknowingly searching for someone’s mind, found Will’s, and banished Vecna there? This would explain how she recognized him in s1 as well, she might have seen him in the red void or could sense him because she has connected with his mind before.

Now I want to answer the question of why El banished Vecna to Will’s mind specifically. This needs a bit of explaining before I get to the point so stay with me:

We know that Vecna likes to target people with trauma because their minds are more vulnerable when they’re experiencing trauma. We can assume that El’s powers work the same. Maybe Will had experienced a recent trauma that made his mind more vulnerable that day and gave El an easy (unintentional) target. But what trauma could that be?

In s1, Hopper says that he had been chief in Hawkins for four years, meaning that Hopper became chief in 1979. When Jonathan speaks to Lonnie, Lonnie asks if Hopper is still chief. This means that Lonnie was still in Hawkins in 1979. So when did Lonnie leave? We can deduce it was sometime between 1979 and 1982. Joyce brings Will tickets to Poltergeist while he is sitting in Castle Byers. Poltergeist came out in June of 1982 so this must have happened around that time. Jonathan and Will built Castle Byers the night their dad left so if Castle Byers already exists, we know this happened before 1982. So Lonnie left before 1982, but after 1979.

Onto my point, I believe that Lonnie left the same day that Vecna was banished to the Upside Down aka September 8th, 1979. This would be a fresh trauma that made Will’s mind more vulnerable to El’s powers. Jonathan and Will built Castle Byers the night their dad left and Jonathan said they were sick for a week after they built it. What if Will’s sickness wasn’t because of rain, but because his mind was being haunted by Vecna? Headaches, nosebleeds, and trouble sleeping sound like they could be symptoms of a typical cold, right? They describe Will’s connection to the Mind Flayer as a “virus” in s2 as well.

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two
The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

In the shed scene, Joyce’s memory is about Will’s 8th birthday. Will turned 8 in 1979. Hopper said he became chief in 1979 in the scene where Joyce is reporting Will missing and he uses that as a reason why Will is likely with Lonnie. Lonnie is linked to 1979 and Will’s disappearance now. That year is significant to Will. These two scenes indicate that Vecna being banished to the UD is connected to Will’s disappearance and is the reason why he was targeted. Why is there emphasis surrounding Will in 1979? Did something happen to him that year that was significant, maybe his mind being invaded by someone?

The destruction of Castle Byers has similarities to the night they built it. It was raining both nights and Will had trouble destroying Castle Byers the same way he struggled to hammer it together. How does the Castle Byers scene end? Will feels the Mind Flayer. So what if the parallels don’t end with the rain, what if Will felt Vecna wandering his mind the night they built it too?

Another thing that felt important: the van scene where Will talks about being different comes just before the scene of Brenner looking at the cracks in the wall left from El banishing Vecna. The song “Being Different” slightly fades us into that scene. Are they connecting Will’s differences to the day Vecna was banished?

Okay so why doesn’t Will feel Vecna for the next four years then? Will said that he doesn’t always feel the Mind Flayer, he only felt it when it wanted to use him. Vecna was dormant until the gate opened again and only made his presence known when he wanted to.

After season four, we are meant to assume that Will’s visions in season two were just Vecna visions, not him actually being transported into the Upside Down. They describe these visions as “true sight” and I think they were right! Will really was seeing into the Upside Down. That’s not the full story, though. Will’s visions were just Vecna visions, but he was also being transported into the Upside Down because that is his mind.

Will heard a baby demogorgan during one of his visions on Halloween. Why would Vecna make him hear a baby demogorgan rummaging through trash if the main point of the vision was to scare him with the Mind Flayer? Why not use the classic clock sound insead? Will was hearing actual creatures from the Upside Down during his visions because they reside in his mind.

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two
The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

The analogy they use in season two to describe Will’s condition is the story of Phineas Gage. It’s interesting how they compared Will’s mental hauntings to a physical injury. Phineas Gage had a rod go through his head that caused personality changes but Will’s personality changes were mostly due to PTSD and the Mind Flayer taking over his mind.

When the doctors scan Will’s brain, there are abnormalities that they can see and they specifically point out abnormalities in the hippocampus caused by PTSD. PTSD can cause physical changes to the brain like making the hippocampus smaller. Will’s brain has physical changes due to PTSD, but maybe he has physical damage to his brain in a different way. Maybe his mind is a physical location that is actively being harmed by Vecna. Maybe these comparisons to Phineas Gage are being made because they both had physical injuries to the brain, but Will’s brain is really the Upside Down. Max says that closing the gate is like cutting off the brain from the body. The UD is a brain!

On the topic of Will’s PTSD, let’s talk about the anniversary effect. Owens says that Will’s visions are worse because he is approaching the anniversary of his disappearance. At the same time as the approaching anniversary, the lab is losing control of the spread of the UD into the real world. Plants are suddenly rotting and tunnels are spreading despite them keeping it contained for nearly a year. Why is the UD’s spread speeding up as they near the anniversary? Maybe Owens was right, but not in the way he thought. Will’s PTSD response is becoming worse because of the anniversary and this is causing the UD aka his mind to spread into Hawkins faster. His mind is more vulnerable and Vecna can take over easier and enact his plans.

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

Will says that the more the vines spread, the more connected he feels to the Mind Flayer. Why does the UD spreading into the real world make Will feel him more? This isn’t just Vecna taking over Will’s mind, Will puts an emphasis on the UD’s spread into Hawkins. It could be that Will’s mind is seeping into Hawkins so he feels more connected to the UD and Vecna because of that. His mind doesn’t feel as distant as before.

They also describe Will as the “host” for the virus aka Vecna. The lab people talk about the tunnels/gates as if they are diseases as well. What if Will is a host in a bigger way? What if he isn’t just the host for Vecna, but the entire UD? He’s a host for both.

Why didn’t Will die in s2 when they closed the gate? Obviously they got the particles out of him, but we later learn that he can still feel Vecna so his connection was not entirely broken even though it should have been. The creatures from the UD die when the gate closes because they are cutting the brain from the body, the brain being the Vecna. So if Will is still connected to Vecna, why didn’t he die and why does he still feel Vecna? His connection to Vecna was not fully severed because the UD aka Will’s mind is still a host for him.

Another thing: Will didn’t feel pain from the UD being burned. If it’s his mind, that would hurt right? I don’t think so. Vecna took control of everything in the UD so they belong to his mind rather than Will’s, taking the pain away from Will and attaching it to Vecna.

It’s interesting how we don’t get a memory sequence during the shed scene. Both Billy and Max had memory flashbacks when they were breaking free from Vecna taking over their minds, so why not Will? They could have shown a swingset, a picture of Will’s spaceship drawing, or a clip of Castle Byers, but they didn’t. We didn’t get to see inside of Will’s mind at all. Do they not want us to see his mind? Perhaps it would be something familiar, something they want to wait to reveal until a later season.

Speaking of memories, we know that memories can help someone escape their own mind. We didn’t get a visual of Will’s memories in s2, but we did in s1. We get three flashbacks. Will and Joyce in Castle Byers, Jonathan and Will listening to The Clash, and one of Will drawing. These memories have key details that relate to the memories used in s2! Castle Byers, drawing, and Should I Stay or Should I Go. These all save Will in s2 and they may have helped him in s1 as well! Maybe Will used the same memories to make connections from his mind to the real world.

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two
The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

Why does the Upside Down look so different now than it did when Vecna first entered it? I originally theorized that this is because Will’s brain was less developed so his mind looked different at the time, but now I have a new theory. What if Will’s mind is stuck in a Vecna vision? If so, what is Vecna taunting Will with in this vision?

The description of the Upside Down is a place of death and decay. Will’s most prevalent trauma before he was taken by Vecna was the abuse and the bullying he faced for being a visibly gay kid. A lot of the bullying was likely about how Will would one day contract HIV/AIDs. We know Troy had implied this once in s1 and that probably wasn’t the only time. Does Will’s mind look like a place of death and illness because Vecna was taunting his fear of AIDs? Hawkins rotting with vines that carry disease with deadly spores in the air is very on the nose. Vecna was taunting Will with the idea that he will spread disease to the entire town of Hawkins just because he’s gay.

When Max made her mind look like the Snow Ball, there were no people there. The Upside Down is the same way, they even emphasize this fact multiple times throughout the show. It’s just like Hawkins but with no people. Maybe Will tried to hide in a happy memory the same way Max did, transforming the Upside Down to look like Hawkins, and Vecna immediately countered this just like he did to Max. As I said in part one, Will’s fight or flight response is often freeze so he might have frozen his own mind as a stress response, capturing the Vecna vision in time. Max tried to escape her tainted Snow Ball memory but couldn’t because Vecna interfered. Either Will froze his mind himself or Vecna prevented him from switching to a happier memory.

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two
The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

When Vecna realized he could reach into other’s minds, he said he became an explorer. He used this power to go inside of his parent’s minds and see them for who they are. He used the same wording of becoming an explorer when he entered the UD. The reuse of this phrase is connecting minds with the UD! He is an explorer for the same reason!

Something about the UD that I thought competed with my evidence is that voices from the real world can be heard there. I originally couldn’t explain this until I realized that Max heard voices inside her mind and so did El! The second Max’s music gate opened, she could hear the boys calling for her. El can hear people talking to her when she is in the void as well. The voices are faint and distant in both El and Max’s mind, just like they are in the UD!

Will’s disappearance has a ridiculous amount of parallels with Vecna’s victims (that will be an entirely different post in the future). Why have Will’s disappearance parallel instances of the mind being targeted where gates open to the UD because of a psychic connection? Will’s mind wasn’t involved or targeted in s1… unless?

This next bit is a bit of a reach and honestly feels unrelated but I’m leaving it anyways:

It’s interesting how the UD messes with electricity when that is a feature of someone using powers as well. The UD functions very similarly to mind powers. For example, in s2, Terry flickered the lights to lead El to her and signal that she wanted to talk. Will did the same things with the lights from the UD. Was Will controlling the lights with his mind by touching them within his mind?

When El connected Will’s mind to the radio, it blew up. The same thing happened when Will used the phone from the UD. If El using her mind made the radio blew up, then maybe Will using his mind made the phone blow up. Will is “using his mind” by simply using the things in the UD because they are inside of his mind.

Both Vecna and El are shown to cool themselves down when they are about to use their powers. El opens freezers to focus on finding Dustin in s3 and Vecna “likes it cold” because it’s easier to use powers that way. Maybe they need to be cold to use their powers because the mind is cold? A staple of the UD is that it’s cold!

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two
The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

Joyce gets a vision of Will and says that she can feel him. Is this in the same way that Billy, Will, and Mike could sense El when she contacted them through the void? Was Will contacting Joyce through his mind? Once Will stops trying to get to Joyce after breaking a hole in the wall, Joyce says she can’t feel him anymore. Was Will’s mind being cut off from Joyce’s because he couldn’t open a gate again from lack of energy? Henry and El both went into comas after they used too much of their powers. Will was slipping in and out of consciousness in Castle Byers shortly after this. Maybe he used too much energy trying to open the gate.

More of the UD functioning the same way that powers do:

The Upside Down Is Will's Mind Part Two

At this point, I feel like I’m proving that Will has powers rather than the UD being his mind. Basically, Will was using his mind to communicate with Joyce, but not by holding out his hand and getting nose bleeds, he was touching things within his mindscape! He was using his mind, but in a different way because it’s a physical location now.

And now I’m going to end this post here. A lot of the evidence I brought up feels like a reach (and trust me, there were many more reaches I did not include) but here’s a repeat of the strongest evidence: music opened two gates to the UD, Will was actually being transported into the UD during his Vecna visions, psychic connection opens gates to the UD, and Vecna’s mind storm is inside the UD. It all comes back to Will and this would be a perfect way to wrap up the many questions about Will’s significance to Vecna.

As for how this could impact the ending of the show, I am a firm believer that the UD needs to be freed, not defeated. If it truly is Will’s mind, that’s a great way to show Will breaking free from that trauma by literally taking away Vecna’s control. Maybe Will can even take back some of the creatures and get them on his side like Dustin did with Dart, allowing them to take part in the defeat of their own abuser. Will is going to free his mind from Vecna’s abuse.

Treating mental illness in fantasy settings

CW: self harm mention

I recently received an ask that included the phrase “[it’s a] fantasy-type setting, so there isn’t really any medication for treatment [for mental illness].” This is absolutely one of my worst pet peeves when writing about mental illness.

By saying “there’s no treatment for mental illnesses” simply because of the setting, you miss a huge opportunity for imaginative and creative world-building.

Let’s look at a tangentially related example from one of my favorite authors.

Years ago, I remember reading one of @tamorapierce ‘s books (I forget exactly which book it was), and a single tiny detail really left a lasting impression on me.

The female main character was able to obtain an enchanted charm to prevent pregnancy.

Honestly, that blew my fucking mind. Despite being an avid reader of fantasy, I’d never seen magic used in that way. It seems like birth control is such a modern invention, but this charm was integrated so seamlessly into the world that it just felt right. It was such a clever, creative detail that in retrospect makes perfect sense.

So back to my point: if magic can recreate (or even surpass) the effects of modern medicine to treat physical problems, there’s no reason you can’t also creatively apply it to treat mental illnesses.

Does your setting have potions? Then you can make a potion of euthymia to treat depression.

Does your setting have enchanted objects? Then you can have a bracelet of grounding to ward off dissociation and flashbacks.

Does your setting have spells that can affect people’s minds? Then you can have a mood stabilizing spell to treat bipolar disorder.

Dungeons and Dragons already has spells and objects that let you see through things that aren’t actually there! That’d be really helpful to a character who has visual hallucinations.

Also, St. John’s Wort (which is a naturally growing herb) has been used as an antidepressant since medieval times. See my post about it here.

I collaborated with the Scriptshrink consultants to come up some more examples:

Hypnosis-like magic could help characters work through mental blocks in therapy, through unraveling the thought patterns that lead up to destructive loops, or dissecting the elements of a panic attack to sort of unpack it and make it more manageable. (Elizafaraday)

A spell or charm to see through the eyes of others could help with body dysmorphia and social anxiety, or that could give a visual or audio cue as to how others perceive the character (ex not even noticing-favorable-neutral-unfavorable) (Elizafaraday, Anon32)

Magic items like bracelets that can provide any sensory input desired when touched to allow different stims. (Anon32)

Magic spells or elixirs than can block stimuli when over stimulated. (Anon32)

A magic ring that could treat self-harm, trichotillomania, or excoriation disorder by making the wearer’s skin unbreakable and their hair impossible to pull out. Alternately, it could give the illusion that the wearer has already done that activity (including all the neurochemical stuff that implies), without actually having themselves come to harm. (Anon32)

If you decide to go with the idea that schizophrenia is caused by spirits / possession, there could be a spirit repelling potion or wards to prevent it. (barc0de)

I would also recommend that these treatments have some kind of drawback, so they don’t end up falling into the “perfect instant magical cure” trope.

Spells may wear off with time, or can only be cast by certain people. They may also have side effects if cast constantly (headaches, dizziness, etc.)

Potions can be expensive or require gathering certain rare ingredients. They could also have side effects.

Maybe the enchanted item is fragile, and could break if directly hit while its wearer is in combat (for maximum drama).

Also, feel free to hit up @scriptwitchcraft for ideas on potion crafting and stuff in a magical setting!

Disclaimer -  The Shrink would like to emphasize that this is advice meant to apply to writing fantasy settings only. Do not apply this post to treat mental illness in real life.

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

Masterpost for Bill "Goldilocks" Cipher fic

Masterpost For Bill "Goldilocks" Cipher Fic

If you're new here, this is one of those fics where Bill comes back in a human body and is imprisoned in the Mystery Shack until the Pines & friends can figure out how to kill him (which they won't, because this is also a "Bill's redeemed through the power of improbable friendship" fic). The "Goldilocks" is because the Pines need a code name other than "Bill Cipher" to call their prisoner, and Bill liked Mabel's suggestion best.

For all my fic, art, doodles, upcoming scene excerpts, and posts about characterization & plot plans, see my #bill goldilocks cipher tag.

New chapter every Friday!

For just the fic itself, here are all the current chapters:

⛓️ 1. Bill returns, in a bedsheet toga.

⛓️ 2. Bill tries to murder the Stans and Soos (with time travel).

⛓️ 3. Dipper and Mabel save the day (with time travel).

It's 2024 and I've decided to make a Gravity Falls fic rec list. Because I do what I want, even if I'm showing up to the fandom a decade or so late. All fics are Gen unless otherwise noted, warnings can be found at the end of each description.

Birthday Dinner by Fordtato

A post-series short story featuring our two favorite old men out at sea, this work is wildly in-character in terms of their bickering and sometimes-competitive-to-the-point-of-self-sabatoge sibling relationship, but in the best and most hilarious of ways. Warnings for lighthearted discussion of cannibalism.

i know exactly where my blood is by strawberrybiscuit

There are a number of works that delve into Stan's possible suicidal ideation tendencies, both in his drifter years and post-Portal Incident. I find this to be a wholly conceivable notion, given both the absolute shit hand he was dealt in life and the hints we are given throughout the series that his self-esteem was pretty much in the gutter. Of the stories that explore this theme, I find this one to be one of the most grounded - Stan's borderline dissociation/gallows humor is very in-character, as is Ford's genuine horror when he learns the truth of the situation, which is rightfully emotional without delving into melodrama or transforming into a Saturday afternoon special. Warnings for intense talk of self-harm and suicide.

By Any Other Name by Zeragii

I, like many of us, am fascinated by the tantalizing tidbits we've been fed as to Stan's decade or so existence as a drifter. We know he's failed at somewhat more legitimate attempts at entrepreneurship (the dodginess of the actual products notwithstanding), we know he was living out of his car for a large majority of those years, we know he's been to prison three times in various countries, and we know something happened in Colombia. All this is to say, Stan's probably made a lot of enemies, and that his map of "States I'm Banned In" is more likely a summary of places in which he has outstanding warrants and/or a price on his head.

What happens when that past catches up to you?

While this isn't an uncommon theme in Gravity Falls fics, what I love about this story is the complexity of the interactions between Stan and Ford here, given this is a post-series fic. Yes, they've mended their relationship, but old patterns die hard. Neither twin ends up as the "damsel in distress" (a worrying recurrence in many GF fics), despite the fact they are thrown into multiple dangerous situations and the OCs/Pines family extension are well-crafted and three-dimensional.

The People That We Always Hoped We Would Be by SharoScylla

A Christmas Carol, but make it Gravity Falls. The section of this story that really sold me was Stan's climatic scene in a bedbug-ridden, hovel of a motel room in New Mexico. Guest appearance made by the infamous Jimmy Snakes, who I learned recently was going to be a real character (and essentially this universe's answer to Ghost Rider) until that whole bit about Stan's past biker life was cut (regrettable). Embracing both the humor and darkness present in the original show, this story sees a Research Era!Ford come face-to-face with his own proverbial demons (real demons not included) as he is visited by a familiar cast of future past. Warnings for suicide attempt.

O Brother by Obsessive_Reader

In progress. A timestuck AU with the Mystery Twins 1.0 being catapulted into the 1980s, a young Ford landing with an increasingly desperate adult Stanley as young Stan tries to navigate the thorny, icy adult his brother Stanford has become. Probably one of the most realistic timestuck AUs out there, as fences are not mended immediately between the adult twins nor with their children counterparts. Also, Fiddleford finally has a chance to shine!

Orpheus Descending by Sir_Thopas

Unfinished. Which is a damn, damn shame, as this is probably one of my favorite Gravity Falls fics of all time. Read it anyway. Yes, you'll swear vociferously at where it leaves off. ResearchEra!Ford goes to incredible lengths to bring his brother back from the dead as Stan's demise is not exactly what it seems. What exactly happens with Stan is incredibly realistic, given his circumstances, and the local color written in by this Georgian native just adds to the Gothic feel of the whole tale. To what lengths would you go to bring your family back? At what point do you cross the point of no return in order to survive? Warnings for graphic description of a decayed corpse and prostitution scene.

Journal #4 by Percival_T_Honeybee

To be honest, this story stops being a Gravity Falls fic a couple of chapters in, instead featuring characters we know and love in increasingly out-of-universe (in all ways imaginable) situations. This doesn't matter, though, as the world- and character-building of this swashbuckling, sci-fi epic are superb and will have you on the edge of your seat until the final chapter. When both Stan and Ford go through the portal, their futures become something they never could have imagined.

Turning by BrandyFromTheBottle

I've mulled over this conceit on more than occasion and truly think it's something that begs further exploration. What if Stanley Pines pulled a Saul Goodman and, after the world was saved, turned himself in, willingly going to trial, and eventually, prison as self-inflicted recompense for his past deeds?

And now for something different...

Entanglement by Haley3

Ford/Bill (to be clear, Triangle Bill. Accept no substitutions). I realize Billford is not everyone's cup of tea and I rarely, rarely post shipping stuff, but in full transparency, I find their relationship fascinating and the idea of their having interactions that may have seeped over the boundary of purely (well, not pure. Ford built a damned shrine and became a one-man cult while Bill was manipulating him the entire time) platonic is not out of the question. In other words, I'm not wholly immune to Billford, but I am rather picky about how they are portrayed.

This fic checks all my boxes. Bill remains a triangle throughout. Bill is unredeemable. Ford and Bill have a relationship whose complexity would rival the equations of the dimensional physics they debate. And, of course, Ford is lying to himself and those around him, deeply, deeply in denial as to the nature and profundity of his emotions towards his tormentor. Warnings for explicit sexual scenes, manipulation, emotional abuse. I mean, it's Bill, we all know what that means.

Help! I loved Nerdy Prudes Must Die and am curious about Nightmare Time but don't really have time to commit to watching it all... (a handy guide)

For those of you who don't know Nightmare Time was a series of Hatchetfield one shots that starkid wrote and recorded during lockdown, all of which are of course available for free on YouTube. They go a lot deeper into the lore than the 3 Hatchetfield musicals, including explaining and explore the characters we know and love in more detail, sometimes including shocking revelations.

They also introduce new characters to the Hatchetfield universe, including Stephanie Lauter, Grace Chasity and Pete Spankoffski, who we first met in a Nightmare Time episode.

As they were filmed in lockdown the recording quality is somewhat variable, but Season 2 has a much higher production value than Season 1, and in Season 1 Episode 1 in particular they were very clearly trying to find their feet with it. That being said the actual scripts and content of the episodes is solid throughout.

I've decided to put together this handy guide of which Nightmare Time episodes people might want to check out if they want to learn more about certain things we saw in NPMD.

1) Nibbly - Honey Queen (season 2 episode 1)

If you're curious to learn more about the Lords in Black each of them (bar Wiggly) have an episode of Nightmare Time devoted to them.

For Nibbly, Wiggly's hungriest and pinkest brother that episode is 'Honey Queen' in Season 2 Episode 1.

Help! I Loved Nerdy Prudes Must Die And Am Curious About Nightmare Time But Don't Really Have Time To

It explores a very entertaining rivalry between Linda Monroe (from Black Friday) and Zoey (the annoying barista from Beanie's in TGWDLM) that naturally turns very very dark. We also get to meet Linda's husband Gerald who she spends most of Black Friday on the phone to.

As a heads up Nibbly doesn't appear until, shall we say, the end of the episode (with Hatchetfield there's always a twist) and he's not in the super sexy form from NPMD but it's a very strong episode and does give a bit of background to Nibbly's deal.

2) Tinky - Time Bastard (season 1 episode 2 part 2)

If you're curious to learn more about this yellow motherfucker played by Curt then you're in luck because he's in my personal favourite episode and one with a lot of interesting lore surrounding it.

Help! I Loved Nerdy Prudes Must Die And Am Curious About Nightmare Time But Don't Really Have Time To

If you're curious about what he means when in NPMD he says 'I could add another Spankoffski to my set', Time Bastard is focused around Pete's brother Ted (from TGWDLM) and the dodgy dealings of CCRP.

It's an extremely clever episode, with lots of really fun twists. It's unfortunately season 1 so has slightly lower production quality, but in terms of raw scripting is just outstanding and has some really interesting reveals about people in the Hatchetfield universe who may not be who we think they are...

Also worth noting that this is in the same episode (Youtube video) as a different Nightmare Time episode 'Forever and Always'. Most episodes work like this where you have two different stories per episode, they absolutely can be watched independently but usually have some sort of thematic link (in this case it's the things we do for love and how they will inevitably be thwarted by CCRP being sketch).

3) Blinky - Watcher World (season 1 episode 1 part 2)

And if you're curious about the one who's always watching you, he's actually the first Lord in Black we meet through Nightmare Time, in the very first episode when Bill and Alice Woodward (TGWDLM) go on an ill fated trip to a spooky theme park.

Help! I Loved Nerdy Prudes Must Die And Am Curious About Nightmare Time But Don't Really Have Time To

Again this is from the first episode so production quality is low but it's a really solid episode and a very interesting look into these characters.

While this is our first meeting of a lord in black in Nightmare Time, I don't believe he's actually referred to as such, and the concept of the Lords in Blacks being introduced as Wiggly's brothers comes in at point 5 on this list.

4) Pokey - Yellow Jacket (season 2 episode 4)

You've already met Pokey through TGWDLM (yep that was his blue shit that destroyed the world!), but you won't truly realise how fucking scary he is until you meet his incarnation 'Otho' in Yellow Jacket.

Help! I Loved Nerdy Prudes Must Die And Am Curious About Nightmare Time But Don't Really Have Time To

A solid episode exploring Lex, Hannah and Ethan in a lot more detail, and in a world and lives where (at least at the start of the episode) things seem to be a lot more stable for them than in Black Friday.

And yeh as I've already mentioned Pokey is fucking s c a r y in it. Also you remember James Tolbert's character, Charles that gets a little cameo in Hatchetown? Well he's the main human antagonist of this episode!

We also learn a lot of lore about 'the gift', the thing that makes Hannah able to do magic.

5) The concept of the Lords in Black generally - The Witch in the Web (season 2 episode 3 part 2)

If you're curious about why everyone's been posting pictures of those evil teddy bears and now even more confused that you've met them all as fucked up high school students, the Witch in the Web is the episode where we're first introduced to the 'they don't care bears' as a set.

Help! I Loved Nerdy Prudes Must Die And Am Curious About Nightmare Time But Don't Really Have Time To

This is a really cool episode, again about Lex and Hannah, but it also exploring Uncle Wiley (from Black Friday) in a lot more detail.

We also first meet two characters called Duke and Miss Holloway who together form the ship Holloduke that if you were following any of Starkid tumblr during lockdown you will definitely have heard of. They're really cool!

Here we also meet Webby, Hannah's imaginary friend in Black Friday, who turns out to be the lord in black's sister: a queen in white. And she's dope.

6) Pete Spankoffski, Stephanie Lauter and Grace Chasity - Abstinence Camp (season 2 episode 2 part 2)

We first meet the now beloved characters of Pete and Steph and the slightly less beloved character of Grace in an evangelical abstinence only camp. The episode centers entirely around these characters and plays excellently with tropes of the horror genre.

Help! I Loved Nerdy Prudes Must Die And Am Curious About Nightmare Time But Don't Really Have Time To

It also has the best song in all of Nightmare Time and it's up to you to decide if I'm talking about 'oh my god it's the axe-man' or 'virginity rocks' (it's both, the answer is both).

That's pretty much it in terms of Nightmare Time episodes that cover things from NPMD, but in case you're curious here's a quick run down of what the rest are about:

The Hatchetfield Ape Man - season 1 episode 1 part 1. Hidgens makes Ted pretend to be a Tarzan style half monkey, half man thing to con Angela Giarratanna out of her inheretence.

Watcher World - season 1 episode 1 part 2. See bullet 3 above. Alice and Bill Woodward go to a theme park and shit hits the fan.

Forever and Always - season 2 episode 2 part 1. Paul and Emma get married. Things are not as they seem (there are robots). One of my personal favourites.

Time Bastard - season 2 episode 2 part 2. See bullet 2 above. Ted fucks with time travel and things end very badly for him. Best episode imo.

Jane's a Car - season 2 episode 3 part 1. Turns out the soul of Tom Houston's ex-wife Jane, who died in a car crash, transferred into the car. This somewhat complicates his budding relationship with Becky Barnes.

The Witch in the Web - season 2 episode 3 part 2. See bullet 5 above. Hannah Foster's having nightmares and somehow a witch and Uncle Wiley are involved. Luckily a good witch (Miss Holloway) is there to try and help.

Honey Queen - season 2 episode 1. See bullet 1 above. Linda Monroe and Zoey Chambers compete to win the Hatchetfield honey queen beauty pageant and things spiral wildly out of control. My personal favourite episode from season 2.

Perky's Buds - season 2 episode 2 part 1. Emma's finally achieved her dream of owning her own pot farm. Just her, her non-binary farm hand Ziggs and some very evil birds.

Abstinence Camp - season 2 episode 2 part 2. See bullet 6 above. Pete, Steph and Grace go to a retreat in the very creepy woods to learn one way or another about the perils of pre-marital sex.

Daddy - season 2 episode 3 part 1. Remember Sherman Young (Jamie's weird creepy guy from Black Friday)? Turns out there's something very weird going on with his mum. We also learn a lot about Frank Pricely (owner of toyzone from Black Friday) in this episode, who turns out to be a very interesting character.

Killer Track - season 2 episode 3 part 2. Miss Holloway must take extreme action to save a young girl and then the whole world against an evil song that kills anyone who listens to it. We learn a lot more about Holloway as a character and she is soooo cool. Another favourite episode of mine.

Yellow Jacket - season 2 episode 4. See bullet point 4. Hannah seeing her sister struggling to provide for them financially decides to find a way of using her power to earn some spare cash.

Hey Melissa - episode aired only on a livestream, type it into youtube and it'll come up. If you've ever found yourself asking 'what if Mariah's secretary character from the start of TGWDLM was really into dom pup play and Paul Matthews was her little pup bitch and she was also a horrific out of control serial killer?' then a) are you Matt Lang because if not I'm concerned? and b) by god this is the episode for you!. I personally really enjoy it I think it's super funny, but obviously heavy trigger warnings for abuse and sexual content warnings (there's a reason they didn't put this in the real series). Fucking excellent tho.

Triangulum - Chapter Index

Triangulum - Chapter Index

A mysterious game with an even more mysterious game-master pulls Bill from the edge of death and back to Gravity Falls for the summer, where he seeks to win the valuable prize he was promised upon achieving victory; the destruction of the weirdness barrier around the town. Naturally, such a tempting deal comes with a few...surprises, mainly in the form of a teenage, human vessel he's now forced to call home. And as the summer continues, only more surprises, twists and ghosts of triangle's past will reveal themselves—no matter how hard Bill tries to turn his usual blind eye to them. It's a brand new summer with brand new mysteries, ones that might be more than Bill, or even the Pines family, are prepared to handle.

A 'Bill Cipher Turns Human and Shenanigans Ensue' fanfiction. Content warnings will be added as needed, but the overall fic will be rated for a Teen and Up Audience. As the poster says, this fic will not be canon-compliant to the upcoming book 'The Book of Bill'.

I really admire your art, especially your sketching style. The arms and hands on your characters always look tangible and like i could really touch them! I was wondering if you had any tips you would be willing to share on how you figure out a character's anatomy or volume like this, since I tend to struggle with it! Thank you :)

Thanks! Deciding on points to emphasize when planning a complex sketch makes it easier to lay things out and in turn makes anatomy/volume a bit easier.

Here's the order I drew each part of the recent jonmartin sketch

I Really Admire Your Art, Especially Your Sketching Style. The Arms And Hands On Your Characters Always

The hands and heads were my main focus, so I beefed the anatomy in those areas while relaxing it in others like the waists n arms. Allow some casual flow in those more lax areas and some incidental volume will naturally pop up.

Using lines of motion and fluid base structures will boost volume and add some life. I like to include the direction of the eyes in the line of motion.

I Really Admire Your Art, Especially Your Sketching Style. The Arms And Hands On Your Characters Always

You can always break out the almighty bean for your base structures like I did with my little bastard Matty

I Really Admire Your Art, Especially Your Sketching Style. The Arms And Hands On Your Characters Always

Real good for following the curve of most lines of motion.

My advice is to loosen up and focus on motion and composition more than the nitty gritty details. Those details will come in time, but build a broad and confident foundation for them first.

He's not supposed to be here. He thinks as he closes your backdoor. He can faintly hear you singing in the kitchen. He's definitely not supposed to be here, he locks the door and slowly walks towards your living room, the sight has him hard. You're laying on the L shaped couch in nothing but an oversized shirt that has riden up your legs exposing your lacey white panties.

He bit his lip to hide a moan as he thought of all the nasty disgusting things he could do to. He made up his mind. He wasn't going to kill you. Necrophilia wasn't his thing. He stayed in the shadows. Watching.

He watched you finish your movie. Call your friends. Scroll social media. Finally at 10:54 you went to bed, he ghosted you walking silently behind you, he wanted to laugh. You were so fucking dumb not to lock your back doors at night. He'd fuck that stupid right out of you.

He watched as you plugged in your phone, how you plopped into bed, how you went out like a light. He waited outside your room for an hour after all, he was a patient man. Especially when what he wanted was right infront of him. He finally enter and swore when he saw you.

Your shirt had ridden up even more,, you're hair was a mess and the final blow your legs were wide open calling for him to sink into them. He left the room and went round your house, locking every single window, making sure every single door is locked and every curtain drawn.

He goes back and your still in that delectable position. He slowly takes out a rope and a knife. With the speed of a cat he ties your hands up and ties your legs to both side of the bedpost. He flips the knife so the blade is in his hand, with the hilt he slowly enters your pussy.

Your pussy squelches as it goes in deeper. He takes it out and he's in awe at how slick it is now. He sucks it clean and smirks, you can definitely take him. If not, he'll make it fit.
