Wasps - Tumblr Posts
This is spreading terrible misinformation about wasps. Wasps don't sting for fun, they just take less BS from things. Wasps don't care for respectability politics, which makes many humans butthurt.
What you should really worry about is the dreaded . . .
H O R N E T (kinda, same rules as wasps apply). Also, they are very good in gardens for pest control, and some species of wasps do contribute to the politination of certain flowers (though some others are parasitic and will burrow inside flowers).

wasp vs bee

Sent this pic to my supervisor and the next day he made a company-wide safety announcement to watch out for wasps
Hello, yes, I would like one WaSp CuP, please.
Chronic neuron misfire at work where a customer asked what my specialty was, like, what my favorite drink is ig, and I said “wasp cup” and we stared at eachother for a second and I decided to double down for some fucking reason and said “you bring the wasp I bring the cup” and she was just like “ok can I have an iced white mocha” without any emotion it was like two neural nets interacting
i love you wasps i love you flies i love you beetles i love you moths i love you non-bee pollinators i love you "uncharismatic" organisms who nonetheless carry our ecosystem on your backs
this is cool and useful advice and all however i dont treat bees with affection either, i see the yellow and i don't care what it is, it needs to die out of my sight
I’m telling y’all that if you don’t jump around erratically bc a wasp or hornet flies close to you, you’ll have less interaction time with them
If you’re nervous about them (not yknow. allergic. let’s not intentionally misinterpret what I’m saying) ignore them. And I do mean IGNORE. Don’t react.
Also, are you watering or generally handling a source of liquid and they won’t leave you alone? Share some at a distance from yourself. Hell are you eating and they want some? Share it.
Honestly if people treated them with the calmness and affection they show bees they’d have better experiences.
Anyway, have a little plate for the yellowjackets when you picnic. They are eating the bugs that you don’t like so offer them a gift.
Thought @onenicebugperday would appreciate this but so I had been working as a pest control technician for mosquitoes over last summer. Obvs that much time outdoors lets you come across a lot of critters, and I decided since i haven’t had that job anymore since November it’d be fun to put together a little highlight reel of the other bugs I came across on the clock.
First off we got an impressive katydid

A quite photogenic snail

My favorite local wasp species, a cicada killer

A much more common and large red wasp

Local hanging thief. Absolutely badass looking robber fly who somehow got into the office building
Another robber fly encounter, this one was busy having a snack on a red wasp it has caught

BMSB that I would usually not like to see, but this one was literally in the middle of molting into the adult form and I loved how it looked like a forbidden peppermint

What I am going to guess is a very handsome stag

And of course, my actual target. Mosquitoes are certainly no uncommon sight but I managed to catch this one freshly emerged out of the pupa and that’s kinda neat
(Asian tiger to be specific, not native here but they sure be flourishing)

Drawing of the day: Megarhyssa greenei. Bonus mini collage of my favourite non-cartoon wasp drawings. I plan on adding more as I go along. For now, this is only a sample. Drawing wasps is keeping me sane during these dark times. Which one is your favourite?

We call it 'Haadi' (हाड़ी) in Awadhi dialect (Hindi) [I mean atleast that's what it's called in my native dialect which is broadly Awadhi]
It's called 'Tattaiyya' (ततैया) in proper Hindi
I've been stung by them thrice. Once it was while riding on a motorcycle with my father when I was a kid, it bit me on my toe and flew away. There are hilarious anecdotes regarding these nasty wasps in my family with equally nasty marks too.
Quick question, what do you call these little fuckers in your native tongue:

In mine (marwadi/rajasthani) it's called Taantiya (टांटीया)
Also how many times have you been bitten by one?

Imgur users apparently hate it when you remind them that wasps aren't demonic hellspawns

When I was a child, I saw something that changed my mind about wasps forever. My dad was doing some cabin construction work and I was hanging out at the site. Some other guy had half-crushed a wasp with a hammer, but it was still alive. As I watched, a second wasp flew to its side, and stroked it -actually stroked it, with what I can I can only describe as tenderness - with its antennae until the injured wasp stopped moving and died. Then the second wasp flew away, and I did not see it again.
She was probably trying to communicate with her sister, probably trying to tell her to come back to the nest or share information about the area, and was very confused by the distorted responses she was getting, likely mixed with scent-based distress signals.
When the responses stopped, she probably went home and told the others to be on alert for danger :(
I’m not anthropomorphizing a bit here. Social wasps groom one another, share a LOT of information, get stressed when separated from their close relatives, and they recognize one another visually, like we humans do, by the fact that every single one has a unique face, even in the same “hive:”

TW: wasps, wasp swarm, zooming in and out kinda fast (I have no practice at recording vids)
They’re nesting outside the guy’s locker room. Good luck football team!

i love having this exact conversation all day every day for the rest of my natural life
