This is just a quick FYI, but if you want a dog, and you also want to start a family, but you're of the opinion that the dog 'has to go' the moment you have your child, you should not get a fucking dog.

Are there really people who bash on Ao3?? Wow. I've never met any of those, it's very strange for me to hear that. I mean, Ao3 is the best site in terms of variety, it has everything. It is FULL of PG-13 works, gen works, family friendly fics and all, not just explicit stuff. I mean, filters exist and they are convenient. I am one of those fans who love to read & write both R and G rated works, and, like, Ao3 is my jam for that.

People opposing AO3 or AO3 in part (such as specific policies, functions, ect) are unfortunately very common. And by no means is the site exempt from criticism; there's always room for improvement, but a lot of the opposition to AO3 comes from the misunderstanding its actual purpose.

Too many people consider AO3 a 'fanfiction site' like Wattpad. To that extent; they're far too used to censorship and regulations. But like I always tell people; consider AO3 more like a museum or a storage vault than just another host site for content.

A lot of people additionally don't actually know why AO3 even exists, and why the kind of censorship we see in modern times on sites like TikTok isn't normal and can be used to perpetrate prejudice. And already is, in fact.

Re-education and developing an open understanding of these things, even if you still personally disagree with some of the content hosted on AO3, is so important for that purpose. Its what I'll continue to do on this blog for as long as I can.

@lesbianmaxevans

For some reason Tumblr doesn't want to let me reblog my post with your (ridiculous) edition, so my apologies but this will have to suffice.

Firstly; you're incorrect on both counts. Foremost that I'm exclusively talking about CSA pornography, and secondmost that I'm talking about CSA pornography at all.

Namely because CSA pornography refers exclusively to the actual pornographic depiction of the sexual abuse of real children. As in, photos, videos and documentation. All of which are also, unsurprisingly, against AO3's policy regardless of also being against the law.

Now, sweeping aside your reduction and scapegoating of pedophilia, what I am actually talking about in this post is anti-censorship.

As in, the thing that makes shows like Game of Thrones, Sherlock Holmes, ect possible. The thing that makes all those fun books like Shadow Hunters and all those Taiwanese queer shows and even your nude art, horror art and so forth possible.

When I talk about the purges of fandom-based sites like LiveJournal and Wattpad I'm not talking about purging fanfiction of forty-year old men rawdogging toddlers.

I'm talking about queer content. Murder mysteries. Survivor stories. All of which were purged in excess from those websites to satisfy investors and religious radicals and people like you.

I highly recommend looking into just how many websites have banned even the mention of same-sex couples or activity in order to 'not offend anyone.'

All of that said;

Yes, additionally, I also advocate for the protection and preservation of content that would fall under the bracket of explicit across a number of subjects including but not limited to:

Pornography involving fictional characters who are minors/below the local age of consent.

Depictions of rape not strictly limited to survivor retellings or condemnation.

Depictions of murder both for plot and just for funsies.

Depictions of age gaps including but not limited to involving fictional minors.

Unhealthy relationships including between employees and employers, villains and heroes, ect.

And much more!

But, by all means. Reduce anti-censorship and an entire generational effort of activism to just 'CSA pornography.'

I think maybe you should get a hobby instead of discussing to teens and middle aged adults on why writing a fic about a 5 year old and their 50 year old dad based on real people is a-okay. Just food for thought maybe.

Bland, uninteresting, nutritionless food. Basically dirt. Actually; dirt has more nutrients.

Also; you aren't automatically ejected from fandom spaces after you hit the middle ages. Education and fun aren't age restricted.

(Kudos to the guy who made a kid at 45 though. A* for his dedication.)

I'd really like to address the Jaws part of this, because I actually have a post regarding that in my drafts ready to go, but OP makes a very valid, brilliant statement:

It didn't cause shark attacks to rise. It caused fear.

Jaws had no actual impact on sharks in terms of what the sharks did. Jaws didn't inherently increase the danger level of sharks. That stayed exactly the same. Sharks did as they've always done; existed in the ocean and occasionally hunted food that turned out to be a person. Because they're sharks and we chose to be thrashing, yummy prey in their natural habitat.

What Jaws did cause is a widespread misconception about that danger. Which resulted in voluntary human action. We, as people, actively chose to decide this risk factor was suddenly tenfold, and we had to mitigate it by immediately going out and killing as many sharks as we possibly could to reduce it again.

Except. It never changed. Because again; the risk was always exactly the same. And likewise; it didn't actually remove the risk at all. There's still sharks. We're still going in the ocean.

You choose to swim in the ocean, there might be hungry sharks that mistake you for brunch.

And that's not even touching on other arguments like intent and indirect influence.

I just feel like Pete Davidson’s SNL monologue shows the whole proshipping discourse boiled down to the most fundament difference between pros and antis.

Because like.

We have his sister, sitting down to watch GoT with him, and she is a person who has a very clear understanding of fiction vs reality. So when Pete starts getting all puritanical over how the villains are twincesting right in front of their eyes, she’s just like “well, it’s not real, you know.” And he jokes that he’s thinking “am I about to bang this chick?”

That is a direct quote from him, btw.

So there we have it. Sister understands that GoT is fiction, and that fucked up things happening in the fiction we consume does not mean we want to do those fucked up things. And Pete goes “oh, she’s ok with fictional incest in a TV show, clearly my sister would want to fuck me.”

And I get it, it’s a joke. But it’s a joke that so clearly shows the disconnect all this shipping discourse and dark themes in fiction discourse and… and it’s just. That disconnect.

And I don’t know if the antis will ever wrap their minds around “fiction isn’t reality” and before anyone brings up Jaws let me say I KNOW. But also: Jaws didn’t cause shark attacks to rise. It caused fear. Which is what a scary movie is supposed to do. It did it well because thalassophobia is fucking real. Not because sharks are wanton killing machines. Because it was tapping into a primal fear that most of us experience to some level.

Because I'm seeing a lot of vile accusations and guilt tripping thrown around lately, I feel the need to reiterate:

Its okay to need a break or a space away from real life events and real life horrors.

Yes. Its okay if you don't reblog that death count post to your Marvel fanblog. Yes, its okay if you need to turn your phone off for the day so you're not staring at horrific headlines. Yes, its okay to not join in a conversation or to move away from a conversation if you need to.

Needing to appropriately manage your mental wellbeing is not the same as being wilfully ignorant or uncaring.
