Just throwing some thoughts on the pile.

Are we using 'problematic ship' as longhand for proship? Because if we are, or if anyone in these threads is, please know that's not what proship stands for. Proship is just 'pro', as if 'for', shipping. As in, 'in support of shipping'. It's another version of Ship And Let Ship. You enjoy your thing and let other people enjoy theirs.

I don't know if this is a fandom-generation thing, but as far as I've ever seen and known and used the term from back in early 2000s, 'shipping' has always been a way to refer to pairing characters sexually or romantically (neither of which has ever excluded general interest/fascination/exploration of other themes involving the pair, for the record. All of that can be explored within the scope of sex and romance. But if they're explored exclusive of it, it wouldn't quite be considered shipping to me). If that's evolved over time, then so be it, but taking everything the previous posters said into account, I have to wonder if it could also be a response to the anti movement, where reasonable people are (subconsciously or otherwise) distancing themselves from the traditional meaning of the word so as to avoid the ire of the roving anti brigade.

Regarding the point that antis have started using 'shipping' to mean 'want to see in canon', that tracks with what I've been noticing lately. In SPN fandom, there's this bizarre need among hellers to insist to all and sundry (despite lack of actual evidence) that their ship is canon, and demand confirmation from involved parties (actors, writers, etc.) that it is so (despite repeated denials from all but one, who's a known attention-seeking shit-stirrer) as if their ship is somehow invalidated or disallowed if it's not, which explains why they're so rabid about it. They seem not to understand that shipping has nothing to do with canon (although you can ship canon relationships, of course). It's purely a fanonical venture and that's fine. That's good. It's allowed. It's expected. It's been done since the very beginning of fandom, and you hold no moral superiority over another based on whether your ship goes canon or not.

I guess that's the bit that mystifies me the most. We're all in here watching our dumb little shows for our dumb little blorbos. They often have weird, extreme, gross or, yes, problematic themes or behaviours exemplified within them. That's what makes them interesting, for crying out loud. We like them anyway, antis included.

So quit trying to make it a morality contest.

i think what’s generally more acceptable now isn’t shipping problematic ships. it’s shipping “problematic” ships the way an anti would, meaning you are only meant to focus on how abusive, horrible, unhealthy something is. you are not allowed to have empathy for the characters or discuss the LOVE involved at all to the point where a lot of complex relationships get flattened and shipping gets reduced to "analyzing the abuse”, making it so that no one’s allowed to find beauty in dark content at all.

It’s gross and they’re brothers!” and the post directly after will be someone talking about the ideal time in the series for dean to get Sam pregnant

Ok, first post ever. All these Beetlebabes antis are mad as hell over a teenager possibly being with a ghost/demon. A) It’s fiction who cares? B) 99% of the time shippers AGE HER UP to an appropriate age. C) All these antis seem to be children themselves. D) They’re not ok with this ship, but they’re all out there probably having sex themselves and popping out kids at 14 anyway so wtf?

Saw this kind of post expressing a thing I see rather a lot online and since my knee hurts so bad for no reason I can't sleep I may as well respond to it here.

In just about every fandom space, sooner or later there's always that one person who doesn't like a thing or a fellow fan and in their screed against whatever they say something like "I'm a survivor of x bad thing" as this weird justification for their arguement. And look, my guy. My dude. You gotta stop with that shit.

Before I go any farther I wanna say that whatever happened to you, yeah that sucked. I've been there too. It's a bad feeling, especially when you're young and it just starts to hit you how bad it was. That's a lousy feeling and a real hard place to be. And you're trying to deal, trying to figure out how your world that is functionally the same as it always was is suddenly contorted around the awful thing. And suddenly something you like or some asshole you've never met blunders into that new raw wound and you freak out. I get it. It's hard being in that place in life. It hurts, it makes you mad, and it's so damn unfair that you can't fix it or make things go back to before you knew. For what it's worth, I'm sorry that happened to you. Shit sucks big time.

However. You are not the only person on earth who was hurt in whatever way you're hurting. Your trauma does not make you an expert on the matter and your hurt does not excuse you when you use it as a bludgeon to try and force people to your side through guilt. That thing that makes you feel uncomfortable and weird all of a sudden? Maybe that's the only thing that got someone who went through exactly what you did through this awful period of realization. And maybe it's all just a joke to some strangers online you'll never meet. You will never really know. It's still a dick move to try and force everyone in a room to do what you want through this guilt trip tactic. For one thing, you're almost certainly hurting someone you have more in common with than not. For another, if you don't care enough about strangers to respect that they feel differently about something than you do, why do you think they give two shits about your feelings? It sucks to find out this way but in most fandom spaces, nobody cares how you feel, and they really don't care when you're a total stranger barging in yelling that they should feel bad because something they like made you, a total rando, feel bad.

tl,dr: Using your trauma as a blunt force instrument to try and get your way is not going to work out how you want and it's a pretty good way to give others a stick to hit you with.

Having a laugh (again) about how scandalous the turds who attacked me found it that I draw art of fat characters sometimes. Like, this was such a cardinal sin of mine for some reason. And then the one who it turned out was an antisemitic predator who was sending porn to minors was also a fat fetishist. You can always tell what someone's kink is by how much time they spend insulting strangers over it. XD

(This is not me trying to look down on fetishists and kinksters! I love you guys. :) It's just the people who are hatefully closeted about their kinks who then go on to actively abuse others to try and keep the eyes off themselves that bother me.
