Okay, so the AU is called Railway Reincarnation and the basic premise is that all engines were humans who died, but they got a second chance but as engines. They don't remember their human life, but they have the capacity to recall their memories! In fact, some of them start out remembering that they're humans...

And they're struggling to figure out their new lives as engines. There's certainly engines who Remember on Sodor, that's for sure!

Douglas: Oliver has been feeling a bit down lately…

Douglas: ever since he lost his arm, he’s been struggling to tie his shoes or button his uniform, even with his prosthetic. Toad and I help him of course, but he does sometimes feel ashamed that he needs to ask for help with what he sees as “basic tasks that anyone his age can do”, and for taking so long to learn how to tie laces with one hand and a hook.

Douglas: I personally don’t mind it. But I do feel bad that he feels this way…

Douglas: so I started asking him to help me with other small tasks, even though I don’t need help with them, I just like Oliver to think he’s helping me, he seems to have perked up a lot since then.

First meeting of the Railway Speed Record Club (1934)

City of Truro (left) and NYC's famous no. 999 (center) were on hand Saturday to congratulate Flying Scotsman (right) on his record-breaking run of 100 mph. Though both engines had claims to the record in the past, this is the first time the achievement has been officially authenticated. There were no hard feelings, however, and all three appeared to be in high spirits over the feat. No telling who the next addition will be to this exclusive club!

This is actually really good lore info that you gave us, so ty for that hun! The thought of kind of a “light essence” controlling the cable is really interesting to see!

If the trains have no crews, then why do they have cabs? Those are specifically for crews to keep them out of the weather. Even if cabs are weirdly required for the trains to come to life, then they'd certainly be either removed after the train awakes or at least boarded up to keep train-hoppers off. (If James didn't notice some boys messing with his controls, then the trains not noticing a stowaway in the unmanned cab is a real concern.)

Adding to this, the earliest locomotives don't have cabs, just footplates where the controls are. The controls are meant for the crews to use. If the engines don't need them, then the controls would also be phased out designs and removed (or at least made inaccessible so troublemakers can't distract the train by messing with the controls).

(My sincere apologies if the first panel comes off rude, this entire ask really rubbed me the wrong way for multiple reasons.)
