When I was a kid, we moved into a house that had a huge lilac tree out front. It was mostly rotten, and it needed to be taken down before it fell. It took a while, but eventually, it was gone.
Mostly. A couple years later, little lilac babies popped out of the ground in its place. My mom was determined to get rid of them, because she'd planted a beautiful flower garden there, and the lilac trees would overshadow and kill the whole garden. I insisted on saving at least a few saplings. She said fine, but I had to dig them out and put them in pots myself.
So, I did. I spent days digging little lilac bushes out of the ground and putting them into pots. Some couldn't be saved, but some could. When all was said and done, I had five brand-new lilac saplings. Seven or eight years old, and it was my absolute pride and joy.
Three died due to sun scorching, severe drought that no amount of watering could save, and perhaps just being moved from their place in the ground. But two survived, and I was awfully proud of them! I'd go out and talk to them every single day. I watered them by hand and made sure they were fertilized properly. I learned all about their favored environments, and I was determined to make sure they lived.
One of my mom's friends saw what I was doing with the lilacs. She asked if she could have one to put in her backyard, and I agreed on the condition that she take very, very good care of it.
It's now fucking enormous. I'm talking ten feet tall and bursting with beautiful purple flowers every spring. My mom still gets updates each year as they start to bloom, which she forwards to me. And all I can think is, "That's my friend! Thriving some twenty years on, there it is."
The other tree nearly died, too. It lived in a pot for far, far too long. I wanted to plant it somewhere in my parents' yard, but my mom was reluctant. Eventually, we agreed to put it in the far back garden. It grew okay for many years, despite the shade, but in all these years, it's never bloomed.
Last year, the massive tree casting massive shadows over the lilac and the garden cracked in half and fell. It tumbled into the garden, crushing part of the nearby shed and destroying a few plants beneath it.
It missed my lilac by inches.
The clean-up is long done. The rest of the tree has been cut down, and my lilac has full sunlight for the first time in fifteen years. It won't bloom this year, I know. But it's got new shoots up. It's taller than ever. I spent half an hour a few weeks ago praising it for surviving all this time, dreaming about its future and telling it how I believe it'll become the tall beauty it's always been meant to be.
I think next year, I'll see flowers.

Astrologyâs Accuracy
An astrology chart alone can actually only tell you so much about a persons personality/life and let me explain why. Letâs say a person has their Sun in the 7th house. Some positive attributes to this placement could be having a happy marriage as the Sun can be associated with happiness and vitality whereas a challenging trait of this placement could be being attracted to people with an ego. If youâre a 7h Sun person but you were raised by parents who constantly fought and say your dad was egotistical and didnât care about anyone but himself and they just didnât have a good marriage then you may not take on the positive trait of a happy marriage and may marry a narcissist because as humans we are a byproduct of our surroundings, studies show. Especially the first 7 years of our life. They heavily influence the rest of it
This is why you may not always find accuracy in every astrology observation you see. You must look at your natal chart with understanding that there is positive energies, there is challenging energies, and there is sometimes neutral energies that can be dependent upon how you were raised, the type of person you decide to be/the action you decide to take in life, and whether or not youâre at a higher or lower vibration in your life at the moment
For example if you donât relate to your North Node then you may not be on the right path in life and could possibly be at a lower vibration either due to wounds that are unhealed, mental health issues, or because youâre just at a time in your life where youâre not being a good person and treating a lot of people poorly and this is because you attract the energy that you are in the quantum field. Although depending on your numerology some of that energy may not even come to you in this life which is why sometimes we donât see people receive their karma but they do eventually in the next life

Astrology and Elemental Imbalance

Elemental imbalances occur when an individual has a limited element present in their birth chart and most often an excess of another. An unattended imbalance can cause stress of extremes of an element being projected by ones personality (Think of the knights in the Tarot).
Having 10 planets in the natal chart, including the rising sign, we naturally have a high chance of having an elemental imbalance in our birth chart and personality.
An imbalance of elements often looks like a minimum of 2 planets in an element, often seen as only having 2-0 planets missing from being familiar with that elements associations.
Having aspects from planets  that naturally contain the missing elemental energies prominent in the natal chart (example, if you lack air but have many mercury aspects), this can aid the elemental lack, though it will not necessarily bring the elements in ones personality into balance for the planet will still be in an excess sign (example mercury in pisces), and it will still act accordingly to the element itâs placed in.

How to balance your elements
When we are unbalanced, we either draw others to use (or us to them) to act as an external reflection of the things we lack within ourselves, however, its possible to engage in other activities that can help bring our elemental lack into appropriate balance that can allow for self-healing and improved wellness.
At times due to elemental imbalances in out chart, we may be drawn to another who has excess of the element we lack (even signs) as to experiences a sense of âying and yangâ by interacting with another. You may find you personally may greatly clash with another, yet you are reluctant to part because they seem to âfulfilâ you in a way you canât explain.
For the element you lack the most in your chart, see the table below to find out ways you can help bring the lacking element in your personality.

An Introduction to Spacecraft and Worship
What is Spacecraft?
Spacecraft is a form of Witchcraft. Much like there are Sea Witches, Kitchen Witches, Secular Witches, I feel like there can also be Space Witches. I have a fascination with the Universes out there, and wanted to incorporate them in my craft much like those who feel a kinship with the Mountains do in their crafts. I named this practice Spacecraft because it sounds all sci-fi-y, and neater than Space Witchcraft. But call it whatever, itâs basically Space and Witchcraft together. Spacecraft.
What is Space Worship?
Space Worship is the practice of worshiping and honoring Planets, Universes, Stars, and the like in a Pagan Path. You do not have to be Pagan to be a Witch and you do not have to be a Witch to be Pagan, which is why I have the craft and the worship as separate things. In my own personal path I combine the two, but do what feels good for you and your path.

Are you a green witch? Perhaps youâre a crystal witch or a sea witch? Maybe you're a kitchen witch? Letâs talk about these labels, what they are, and if you need them!

First and foremost let's discuss:
Do I need a label?
Nope! While youâre more than welcome to use one--many even--they arenât required!
I wonât give you an exhaustive list of witch types, as youâll learn there are as many labels as there are witches. Instead, I want to give you an idea about how these labels come to be and how you can decide on them if youâd like.
Labels for witches come from a variety of paces but a label almost always denotes a certain specification of their craft.
The tools they prefer (crystals, tarot, herbs, runes etc)
The biome or domestic area they thrive most in (sea, forest, swamp, mountains, urban, suburban, garden, kitchen etc)
The path they choose to follow (traditional, pop-culture, hedge, folk, poison, ceremonial, etc)
Their involvement with other witches (solitary, coven, hereditary, etc)
The type of magic they prefer (glamour, curse, healing, etc)
An over-arching concept or theme (death witch, love witch, divination witch, cosmic witch, etc)
Some labels are more specific than others and some can even encompass other labels!
For example: a green witch could be a witch who deals with all of nature whereas a plant witch would focus on just plants and a garden witch would focus on garden-specific plants.
Youâll also hear the term eclectic witch. What this label means is someone who uses a little bit of everything, or doesn't follow one specific path.
Unfortunately, there are those who use this label as a shield to hide their appropriation, assuming they can take what they want from any culture, closed or open, without doing proper research or initiation.
That said, many of those who use this term are not like that! They are simply witches who are just as likely to do magic in the forest as they are in the city, or to use tarot as much as they use pendulums, or perhaps they use herbs as much as they do crystals!
Not every witch needs a label, some don't ever use them, or they may use them only when chatting with others about their preferences in magic. Labels may even come and go as you move forward on your path. Choose whichever labels work for you, even if that means no labels!
Urban witch kit: What you need on the go
This is what I carry on a regular basis for my witchcraft. Whenever I have a purse, I have all these with me.
Paper, pen, pencil and eraser, for on-the-go sigils
A pocketknife, preferably one with a scissors attachment
At least one cigarette lighter, whether you smoke or not (I donât) to burn things
Chalk if youâre into drawing sigils on concrete and things
A phone. This is basic urban survival more than urban witchery, but you need some kind of cell phone.
Hand sanitizer for on-the-go purification in case of touching undesirable things
Gloves to keep energies off you when youâre handling them
Sunglasses for glamours and protections
A compact or other hand mirror for various things including divination
Your preferred divination method, if portable, is also good to include
A pack of cards
A keyâhouse, locker, car, skeleton key that doesnât open anything, doesnât matterâfor personal wards
All cheap, easily accessible things. All things that will come in handy for any spontaneous spellcasting.
Personally I've never been a fan of the "magic is a beast that needs to be tamed" metaphor. Magic is more like the ocean: powerful, terrifying, capable of unbridled force. But at the same time, it is gentle, warm, the lifeblood of millions of people. The folk who know the ocean know you cannot harness it's force, you must work within or around it, lest it destroy you. Similarly, magic is great and terrible and gentle and kind, all at once. And those who work with it need to work WITH it, not reign over it. Because the primordial forces have no rules about biting the hand that feeds you.
Things to put in your book of shadows
Of course, only put in your book of shadows/grimoire what you want. If you don't want to put certain subjects in your book then that's fine. It's your book, utilize it how you want. This is just a masterlist of ideas that I've put together. Feel free to add anything else to the list that I may have missed, because there's absolutely no way I included everything.
And for the love of all the gods, if you come across a closed entity or practice, don't try to work with the entity or practice if you're not already part of that group or tradition. You can research it but don't practice it.

What Do I Use For My Grimoire?
You can use anything for a grimoire! For a physical one, journals, binders, and notebooks are good. For digital ones, Notion, Tumblr, Docs, and even just your file folder are great.

If the last update date is two weeks or more, Iâd recommended checking out the updated list.

What is energy?
Energy is the medium that carries the intent for spell work. It is utilized in every spell any practitioner has ever done or will do. I postulate that âEnergyâ is the equivalent of the multidimensional field of virtual particles (See quantum field). This is to say that energy is the smallest permeable fabric in which the most minute manipulations can take place. However, energy, when worked with consciously and knowingly, can create waves of effects over great distance. A butterfly effect starting with the observation and projection of a singular intent.Â
What is energy work?
Energy work is the manipulation of energy through use of the subtle body and the psychic mind. By âPsychic mindâ I refer mostly to oneâs energetic awareness: A practitionerâs ability to know where energy is in space and time, what its properties are, its trajectory & velocity, and its form. With this awareness, a practitioner can use their subtle body to manipulate energies that exist around them and within them. Energy work has significantly more to it than practices like Reiki, and other appropriative New Age practices, will lead you to think.Â
Why is energy work important?
Energy work is absolutely crucial to all spell work and any sentiment against that grain will hinder your craft. Every magical action you do has an energetic interaction. Without consciously practicing energy work, the energetic process behind it will be reactive instead of proactive. This allows your subconscious to have influence over the spell, which rapidly hinders the accuracy and precision of your casting. When energy work is employed purposely the conscious mind has significantly more influence, which improves the likelihood of the success of your spell.Â
How should energy work be practiced?
Energy work should be used intentionally in every single working you do as to have further control over the spell process. However, it should be practiced on a regular basis in order to keep up your energetic awareness. At first, energy work will be something that'll take a lot of concentration; however, after a while youâll be able to practice it while doing tasks as well.Â
Important & beneficial concepts in energy work
Visualization is a helpful guide when first starting, but thatâs all it should be as visualization is not doing actual energy work. If you lean too hard on visualization, youâll stagnate as well as lose your sense of energetic awareness over time. Energetic awareness is very similar to the sense of touch. While these senses are very different from each other, touch is the closest physical analog to energetic awareness. You have to feel the energy more-so than see it. Visualization should be used to create a 3D mold of the construct youâre trying to make, and nothing more.Â
Getting started
When setting out to try energy work for the first time I recommend setting aside some time where you can sit in a quiet place for at least 30 minutes. For neurodivergent practitioners, it may be more beneficial to start off while out on a walk with some stimulating non-vocal music. For spoonie witches, It would probably be best to do this while laying down- just remain mindful as to avoid falling asleep.
Improving Energetic Awareness
Begin by closing your eyes and trying to reach your awareness out of your body. Energetic awareness is the same sense that you use to detect that someone is looking at you from behind. It should be less visual and more feeling. Try to trace the energies that exist in your environment.
Releasing Energy
The first step of learning energy work is to be able to release energy. Everyone releases energy from their subtle and physical bodies all the time when they are experiencing emotions. The stronger the emotions, the more energy is released. Whatever emotion is being experienced also modifies the types of energies that are released. Sit and focus on a time when youâve felt a strong emotion and the energetic sensations that you can recall experiencing during that emotion. Then, if youâre able, try to start using that same path or application in order to start gradually releasing energy. Once youâve got the hang of it, try to release energy from a single body part only. The goal here is to gain enough control of the release of your energy to a point where you can release energy from a tiny region of your body and be able to control the rate in which that energy is released.Â
Absorbing Energy
The process of absorbing energy is equal and opposite to releasing energy. The practice for this is also the same but opposite. The main difference is that it is important not to let the energies that are absorbed, are not taken into the subtle body. This is because some environments have energies that arenât that harmonious with our bodily energies. Be sure to use your practice in releasing energy to redirect what you absorb and let it back out into the environment as you proceed.Â
Giving Energy Form
This is the point where visualization can be a helpful guide; however, if you lean too hard on it you will likely not be practicing energy work to the extent that would be required to master this step. Visualization can be used as a mental mould for the energy work. Visualizing the energy itself will not yield any progress. Hold the mould in your mind as you use the digits on your right hand to project controlled streams of energy into it. If any energy starts to escape the mould, pull it into your left hand or use the pulling motion to get it back into the shape. This will slowly help you develop the ability to control energies outside of your subtle body but within your fields. Once you can create a basic shape, try to solidify it in space before moving it around. Do so without adding or subtracting the amount of energy that makes it up. You know that youâve mastered this when you can create a simple construct of any platonic shape, as well as a sphere, and move it around through space with axial rotation without the shape changing size or the amount of energy changing within it- all while maintaining the constructâs integrity.

All the same, there were some things they needed to learn. Do not drink milk after a thunderstorm, for it will certainly be sour. Always leave out seed for the birds when the first snow falls. Wash your hair with rosemary. Drink lavender tea when you cannot sleep. Know that the only remedy for love is to love more.
How to REALLY Learn Tarot in One Day
Reading tarot like a master requires a natural talent for divination. Barring that, years of constant practice will suffice.
But anyone can learn the basics. And it should not take longer than a day to cover. Start in the morning, and by evening, you will be a tarot reader.
This post is Day 1 of the Divination class that I teach. By 8:30 PM, my teenage initiates were already correctly predicting each otherâs crushes and the winners of tennis matches.
THE DAY BEFORE
Get a deck and a resource.
Acquire a Rider-Waite deck or a clone of it. You may opt for something else, but be forewarned that you could lose out on a multitude of symbolism. The Rider-Waite may not be the prettiest, but there is nothing more complete.
Find a reliable resource. The Ultimate Guide to Tarot by Liz Dean is a perfect book for beginners. So is Labyrinthosâ website, if you prefer something free of charge.
THE DAY ITSELF
9â10 AM
Pick one keyword for each card.
With a belly full of breakfast, quickly skim through your resource and pick just one keyword per card. For example, âdestructionâ for The Tower, âhappinessâ for The Sun, and âwealthâ for the Ten of Pentacles. Note it all down on paper or on your phone.
10â11 AM
Associate the word with the image.
Look at your keyword side by side the card. Make an undeniable connection.Â
Why is The Tower âdestructionâ? Because the tower on the card has been âdestroyedâ.
Why is The Sun âhappinessâ? Because the child on the card looks âhappyâ.
Why is the Ten of Pentacles âwealthâ? Because the family on the card looks âwealthyâ.
Memorization becomes much easier when based on visual correlation.
11 AMâ12 PM
Quiz yourself.
Hide your notes from view. Keeping in mind the word-image associations you made, go through each card, reciting its keyword. Put in one pile all the cards you remembered the keyword for, and in another, the ones that escaped your memory.
Then look at your notes side-by-side the second pile to remind yourself of what you missed. Go through the whole pile again, repeating the process until you can recite the keywords for all 78 cards without making a mistake. One card, one word. Should be as simple as pre-school.
12â1 PM
Take a break.
Have a meal. Nap a little. Stretch a bit. Give your mind space to absorb everything you just memorized.
1â2 PM
Quiz yourself again.
You are guaranteed to forget some of your keywords. That is fine. It is why you are doing this again, to strengthen your memory. Be patient with yourself, and keep going through the whole deck until you are no longer making any mistakes.
2â3:30 PM
Pick a key phrase for each reversed card.
Quickly skim through your resource again. Now that you know the upright meanings, reversals should be fairly easy, because they can only be one of three: the opposite of the upright card; the upright card watered down; the upright card made worse.
To illustrate:
If The Devil upright is âaddictionâ, reversed it is âovercoming addictionâ â the opposite.
If the Nine of Cups is âfulfillmentâ, reversed, it is âfulfillment delayedâ â watered down.
If the Seven of Swords upright is âmanipulationâ, reversed it is âbetrayalâ â made worse.
Note it all down next to your upright keywords.
3:30â5 PM
Quiz yourself on both upright and reversed meanings.
Hide your notes from view. Keeping in mind the upright-reversed meaning associations you made, go through each card one by one, reciting its upright meaning followed by its reversed meaning.
Like before, put in one pile the cards you had no problem with, and in another, the cards that escaped your memory. Look at your notes for those you missed. Go through the whole pile again, repeating the process until you can recite the upright keywords and the reversed key phrases for all 78 cards, without making a mistake.
5â6 PM
Take another break.
Have another meal. Nap some more. Stretch again. Let your mind and body breathe.
6â7:15 PM
Quiz yourself again on both upright and reversed meanings.
Go through each card one by one, reciting its upright meaning followed by its reversed meaning.
Like before, put in one pile the cards you had no problem with, and in another, the cards that escaped your memory. Look at your notes side by side the cards you missed. And go through the full deck again until you are no longer missing a beat.
7:15â8 PM
Read.
For the last time today, bring out your resource, and from it, choose any spread you like. But if you really want to do it right, the Celtic Cross spread is recommended. Do not worry about being overwhelmed. You can leave the book or the website open on the page where the spread is.
Ask tarot your question. Without looking at your notes, interpret its answer to the best of your ability using the keywords and key phrases you just memorized.
Congratulations. You are now a tarot reader.
But if you wish to keep learning, then keep reading.
THE DAYS AFTER
Day 1 â Day 4
For the next four days, quiz yourself again on both upright and reversed meanings, to really cement them in your mind. Then perform the same spread you did the first time, but ask a different question each time. Interpret the cards to the best of your knowledge. This should only take an hour at the most.
Day 5
By now, everything you learned has been drilled into memory. Feel free to expand your knowledge. Read your book cover to cover. Fully explore your chosen website.
Most of the new meanings you will learn will be related to the ones you committed to heart, so do not worry about being confused. For example, if your keyword for The Empress is âabundanceâ, you will find that its other meanings are âharvestâ, âcreativityâ and âfertilityâ. âHarvestâ is financial abundance; âcreativityâ, an abundance of skill; âfertilityâ, an abundance of growth. They vary slightly, but they are all the same, essentially.
All the best in your tarot journey.
Advice for First-Generation Witches
I have a friend who decided she wants to be a witch. She asks me for a spell every time she overhears that some date is important to witches.
No ritual has ever worked for her. Not a single one.
Magic sees her coming from miles away then shuts the door to her face. Occult beings want nothing to do with her. Incantations do not wish to be pronounced by her mouth. Witchcraft tasted her and spat her out.
Because to treat the craft randomly is to treat it disrespectfully. Magic pulls away from those who see it as a hobby.
This path is not merely an interest. It is a way of life. Only those who understand this can truly harvest its benefits.
Becoming that person takes a while. But if you start here, youâll get there fine.
How to Become a Witch
Witches could already be practicing for decades, and still, every day, they keep learning new things. That is how wide-ranging and wonderful this path is. But when taking your first step, there is no need to be overwhelmed. For now, start with these and forget everything else.
STEP 1: Look within.
Just because Aphrodite is trending on Twitter does not mean you should worship her. And just because crystals look good on Instagram does not mean you should start your own collection. Your practice should be tailored to your soul, not to the posts on your dashboard.
So go to CafÊ Astrology and enter your birthdate. It will calculate your natal chart, which is basically the manual to your life. It lets you know your strengths and weaknesses so you can let the former make up for the latter. This website not only shows you the details, it also explains what they mean.
STEP 2: Look up.
Now that you have a better knowing of yourself, look beyond your existence. Who do you think made you?
Investigate your lineage as much as you can. Was your family always Christian? Jewish? Atheist? Or did your ancestors have a more traditional belief? Having an inherent connection to the old gods means inviting them into your life will be much easier. If you feel a strong affinity with the Greco-Roman gods particularly, use your natal chart to confirm your theory.
But if after much meditation, you find yourself believing that the source is not a divinity, but the cosmos as a whole, then feel free to embrace that energy.
STEP 3: Look closely.
Our eyes can only see what is right in front of us. Divination allows us to see beyond that, and look into the forgotten past⌠the hidden present⌠and the future in all its glory.
Tarot is one of the richest divination systems in existence. Here is how you can learn it in one day. But if you feel that it is not for you, there are many alternatives too. Do you enjoy meditating? You might fall in love with scrying.
STEP 4: Look out.
One of the best things about witchcraft and paganism is that they empower you to improve your life with magic.
Is there a danger you need to protect yourself from? A wound that you need to close? A wrong that you need to right? Whatever it is, there is a spell for it.
Start with the simplest ones. All you need are a few ingredients and ton of faith to make them work.
STEP 5: Look around.
Now that you know who you really are⌠where your faith truly lies⌠how to see beyond the obvious⌠and how to tweak reality to make life easier⌠you are officially a practitioner.
It is time to expand your knowledge even further. Read as many books as you like. Try as many methods of divination as possible. Perform as many spells as you can.
You can start with these lists:
All About Divination
All About Astrology
All About Spells
Take as long as you need with each step. No need to hurry. Good luck in your journey.
