Can you haunt me forever please?

Title: Can you haunt me forever please?  (Part 5 of BuckTommyWeek 2024)

Pair: Evan Buckley/Tommy Kinard

Rating: G

Word count: 3 870 words

Last night, Buck and Tommy proposed. Last night, Buck and Tommy started a new chapter of their life. Last night, Buck knew that he was enough. Last night, Buck knew that with Tommy by his side, everything was possible. But today, Buck woke up alone.

--

Buck’s hand glided on his naked chest, no weight was present. He tapped the mattress thinking that Tommy could have rolled around like he sometimes does, but only softness let his touch. Buck finally opened his eyes. Alone. No one was there in the room. Was yesterday a dream? Did he fall asleep in the car and dreamt the rest of the night? Did Tommy leave in the night? Did Tommy really propose? Buck looked at his left hand. Nothing. No ring.

SUMMARY: Maddie can see and speak to the living, but the dead as well. She helps lost souls move on, but it's been a couple years since she's helped anyone due to her abusive husband. But when a man appears not knowing what is going on, Maddie can't explain why he can't see the light to cross over. But maybe it's not her that's meant to help him move on. Maybe it's the other way around...

SNEEK PEEK:

"What is your name?"

"Howard Han, but uh, just call me Howie."

"Well, Howie I'm Maddie, and I'm very sorry to tell you this but...you're dead."

And in those two simple words, his whole world seemed to crumble. Chimney stumbled back as if he himself had just been slapped, shaking his head back and forth. "No, no that's not possible. I feel fine. If I were dead I wouldn't be here talking to you. I'd be...I'd be…" Well actually he doesn't know where he would be, but his guess is a hospital. The only thing he can remember is the accident and his situation being not a good one, so how the hell had he ended up in this woman's bathroom?

Only the first chapter is up but hope you guys enjoy it. Let me know if you’d like me to just post the whole thing on Tumblr instead of linking my archive. :)

Always so good! 😭❤️

Maddie is in a car accident and the 118 respond. She’s not pregnant and her injuries are painful but not life threatening, but that doesn’t stop pup from going completely quiet as he’s treating her in the ambulance

Life is fragile; he’s known that from the age of fourteen, facing the reality of a future without his mom. Life could be fleeting, the people he loved could be stolen away from him without any warning at all and he’d never forgotten that. It was why he had stayed away for so long, even after Eddie and Hen had gone back to their own families. He couldn’t control much, but he could control going home and putting Maddie and their unborn child at risk of a virus that, at the time, they had known little about. His own mind had kept him up for hours during those nights in Buck’s apartment, wishing he could push it all aside and just go home to bask in the glory of everything he had ever wanted

And he had gone home. Eventually. And whilst he never forgot about how easily it could all be stolen from him, he’d started to take it for granted. The pandemic had passed, their daughter had been born, Maddie had proposed to him and life was good. Sometimes, it just feels as though when life has gotten too good, that’s when the rug is swept from beneath him and he’s reminded, always painfully, of the fragility of it all. When his father had left and he and his mother had been free from that loveless marriage and the constant criticism and disappointment, she’d been diagnosed with cancer and was gone just a few years later. When he’d finally found a purpose for his life, something that meant… something, Kevin had been stolen from him in the blink of an eye. When Maddie had asked him on a date, and then she’d been kidnapped and he’d been stabbed and they both could have died. When he and Maddie had professed their love for each other, she’d been taken hostage the day after. And when Maddie had gotten pregnant, they were still coming down from that high when the news of the pandemic hit and suddenly he was packing a suitcase and leaving for their safety.

And now, in the midst of wedding planning and talking about the possibility of trying for a second child, the woman he loves is lying on a gurney in the back of his ambulance. His body seems to go through the motions of it all, remembering uttering pointless words of comfort in her ear when they’d discovered that Maddie was involved in the midst of a multi car pileup. But now, words fail him, too lost in his own head as he brushes the blood matted hair from her face and just takes in the pain behind her eyes. He wishes he could give her something more than he already has to take it away, his heart breaking at the thought of her even feeling an ounce of hurt.

Her arm is definitely broken which is enough cause for concern, alongside the head injury but most of his fear lies with the immense pain she’s feeling from her hip, unsure of the intensity of the physical trauma. It feels as though he’s going to throw up, already getting ahead of himself - their daughter is only one years old, they’re going to have to cancel the wedding which is in just three weeks, he’s going to have to take at least a month off work, probably more.

“Chim? How are we doing back there?” The voice of his best friend manages to pull through his spiralling thoughts, only letting out a noise of acknowledgement in return, knowing that she’s trying to him present and focused on Maddie as she is now and not the Maddie that’s going to struggle getting up and down the stairs of their apartment building or the Maddie who won’t be able to run after their little girl anymore or the Maddie that won’t be able to walk down the aisle in a few weeks.

Maddie has barely said anything, focusing more on him and trying to keep her eyes open, breathing into the oxygen mask he’d placed over her face in the car whilst trying to hold back his own tears. She’s in so much pain and there’s nothing more he can do for her other than carefully brush his fingers over her forehead, the words dying in his throat as he stares at her. He wants to tell her he loves her and that she’s going to be okay but if he opens his mouth, he’s worried he’ll burst into tears and that’s the last thing she needs from him. He knows she’s going to live, he knows that Maddie will be considered lucky in comparison to some of the people that had been treated that day. But he doesn’t feel that way, he feels cursed, he feels… terrified because life had been good and once again, something has been thrown at him without warning and it feels as though he’s about to break. He feels cursed, as though he has to keep waiting for the next bad thing to happen. As though he’s waiting for Maddie to be stolen from him because he’s almost lost her far too many times.

He’s only pulled from his thoughts by the feeling of her hand in his own, squeezing tightly, reminding him that she’s a fighter, that she’s still here and still, his heart aches for what could have been. The tension still remains from the moment he had recognised Maddie’s car and the overwhelming fear he had felt as he’d sprinted towards the scar, screaming the name of the woman he was going to marry and their daughter. The baby seat was empty, the trepidation easing only slightly at the stammered words of Maddie telling him that their daughter was safe with her grandparents. His heart still races, his head still spins, his hand holding tightly onto hers, knowing he’s not going to let go until he absolutely has to and even then, he’s not going to leave her side as long as he’s allowed.

“We’re almost there.” He’s just glad that Hen is the one to fill the self-imposed silence, too caught up in his own head and the nausea that lingers to dare open his mouth as he takes a deep breath, bringing her hand to his lips to press a gentle kiss to each of her knuckles. She’s going to be okay. They’ll be okay.

Chapter two is officially up!!!

SNEEK PEEK:

Chimney isn’t sure if he wants to live or die though, that’s the sad part. If he dies he dies, maybe then he would get to see Kevin and his mom again. It has been so long since he last saw her that her voice has faded and her face is only present from the photographs he has saved from all those years ago. If he lived though, he would have months of therapy and pain to work through, but he would have the support of the 118 and every other fire station in LA by his side which is a comforting thought. But he just wouldn’t have that special someone waiting for him.

So as his eyes grow heavy, and Bobby’s pleas for him to stay awake grow quieter with each passing second, Chimney can’t help but let his last thought be that he wasn’t meant to meet anyone.

That special person doesn’t exist for him.

It’s currently 7:45 am, which means I just spent my entire night working on chapter three of my Madney story. I love how I had the option to either get a good nights rest or write fanfiction, and my brain immediately chose fanfiction. 😗✌🏼

Awwwww I can’tttt!!! So goodddd!! But I swear if we don’t get a barbecue scene where Maddie meets the gang and everyone falls in love with her daughter I’m SUINGGGG!! ❤️😭

Riley AU. Maddie meeting Hen for the first time. Maybe it’s an accidental meeting. Maddie and Riley spend the night at Chimney’s place after a long day of doing whatever people do with kids in LA and Riley opens his door (something she LOVES to do to even though Maddie always tells her not to) when Hen knocks.

It had been a long day full of excitement and far too much food and joy and Maddie is entirely certain her face aches from the amount of smiling they’ve done today. It had been Howie’s idea to go to the zoo, the one that she had been trying to get to on the first day they had met and hadn’t actually found the time or chance to do so since. He’s wonderful, in every sense of the word, from taking care of her, to being patient and kind to her daughter, to just being an absolute light in what had once been a dull life.

Riley adores him which is really the most important thing because her daughter will always be the biggest, best part of her and of her life and the thought of her not liking someone she does had been terrifying. But Maddie knows, more than anything, that her daughter’s feelings would always come first, no matter what. Thankfully, it’s not a hurdle to overcome, at least not at the moment and it’s a relief because she isn’t sure she would ever be able to feel the way about someone else as she does about him. Truthfully, she hadn’t felt it was at all possible to love again after everything with her husband.

She and Chimney are sitting on the couch as she snuggles into his side, barely paying attention to the movie as she tries to keep her eyes open. Riley had given up on the movie a while ago, happily lying on the floor between the living room and the kitchen with her iPad held out in front of her. It’s peaceful and she feels safe and loved with his arm wrapped around her whilst her hand settles on his stomach. She loves these moments with him because there isn’t any innate desire to fill silence with awkward conversation because the silence is just as comfortable as the flowing conversations they have. She could talk to him for hours and never grow tired but she could also relish in the safety of his touch, knowing she had spent far too long dreading the touch of the man who was meant to love her.

Her eyes are falling to a close just as the door knocks, letting out a groan when the arm is gone from hers but before Chimney can even move off the couch, she hears a “Hi,” and she knows that her daughter has happily scrambled up from her place on the floor to open the door, just as she does at home. And at home it’s usually something that earns her a roll of her eyes and a half-attempt of discipline because whilst it’s irritating and potentially dangerous, Maddie lives in a secure building and usually it’s just takeout or Chimney. With her daughter it’s a case of picking battles, sometimes and the opening of the door is one she knows she might never win because Riley is far too friendly and too eager, at the best of times.

However, this isn’t home and Chimney doesn’t live in as secure a building as she does and she knows they’re going to have to have words about opening other people’s doors, especially when Chimney looks as though he wants to say something but he doesn’t know what to say. He’s barely known Riley anytime at all and he’s not her dad, he’s not quite in that place of being able to tell her off and definitely not in any place to tell her how to parent her daughter. But, for the first time, she can see it as clear as day on his face as she moves to stand up, “Riley!” She rubs her hand against his arm before she walks past him, biting down on her lip as she shakes her head at the little girl who’s standing at the door with a huge smile on her face as though she had done nothing wrong at all.

It’s with a sigh that Maddie beckons for her to come to her, “It’s Chimney’s apartment, not yours, you don’t open the door, especially not when we aren’t expecting anyone, do you understand?”

“But why?”

“Do you talk to strangers in the street?” It comes out a little snappier than she had intended, arms folding as she raises a brow and looks at her daughter, watching the pondering thought on her face before she shrugs her shoulders, quickly followed by a shake of her head when she must see the look on Maddie’s face, growing angrier by the second. “Then why are you answering the door to strangers?”

It might be the first time she’s actually seen some sort of understanding on her face, her hand still on the door before she edges it open a little more, revealing a woman that Maddie recognises from Chimney’s social media, “I was just trying to help.”

She doesn’t know what she was about to say but the words die on her lips before they can, her face flushing a dark shade of red before she pulls on the top she had ‘borrowed’ (stolen) from Chimney, wearing nothing but a pair of shorts beneath it.

Chimney looks confused, moving forward the door to gently pull her daughter away from where she’s standing, “Hen, what are you doing here?” It’s not that Maddie had purposely avoided meeting his friends, she knows how much they mean to him - especially Hen and her wife and the child they have together, the little boy that considers Chimney to be like an Uncle to him. It’s just… she’s not used to having a group of people. Doug had been popular but he had made it clear that his friends were his own and she was his and nobody else’s. She can remember how possessive he’d be around them, as though he wanted everyone to know that she belonged to him and how… quiet she had to be, so unlike herself that she had lost herself along the way. She couldn’t even remember the bright eyed eighteen  year old she had once been who would talk to anyone and everyone about everything. All she could remember was the feeling of his hand around her waist and his fingers holding onto her so hard, pressing into her stomach so deep, she’d have finger shaped bruises by the time the night ended.

It’s different, she knows it’s different but it’s herself that she doesn’t trust most of the time. The level of intimidation she’d feel at the thought of meeting these people who actually mean something to him was intense. “I uh, was just coming to check on you because…” Maddie gulps down the lump in her throat knowing exactly what today is - the anniversary of his brother’s death. He’d asked her if she wouldn’t mind distracting him from the day and she had done her best but she can still see the lingering pain in his eyes. It had been ten years and whilst it had been twenty years for her, they’d bonded over that mutual loss in vastly different circumstances. “But I see that I’m not needed.”

Riley, for all her five years, manages to pick up on the slight awkward tension almost immediately, “I’m Riley, mommy and Chimney are tired because they’re really old and they’ve been walking around the zoo all day and Chimney even came into the park with me and he said he hurt his back but I think that was an excuse not to come on the seesaw with me.” Her daughter talks fast and Maddie can see the amusement on the other woman’s face before she takes Riley’s lead, realising she can’t stay hidden from that huge part of Chimney’s life forever.

She steps forward, one hand still trying to pull down the top to no avail, her bare legs on show and the shorts that were far too short revealing way more than she would have liked for her first meeting with Chimney’s best friend but there she is. It’s with a breath and her best smile that she holds out her hand, “I’m Maddie,  it’s nice to finally meet you.”

She takes her hand,  giving it a small shake, but she can see the look in her eyes and the slight frown. Maddie wonders what Chimney has told his friends about her, chewing down awkwardly on the inside of her cheek as she waits for a response. “Hen… so you are real.” His arm is around her waist within seconds just as her cheeks flush once more and she looks to him for help. Whatever he’s told them about her, she supposes it starts and ends with every rejection she had provided him as to why she didn’t want to pop by the station or go out with Hen and Karen or go to Bobby and Athena’s house for dinner. He’d asked so many times and each time she had told him she wasn’t ready. It probably wasn’t the best first impression when they wanted to meet the person a member of their family was dating.

“She is and now you can go spread that news that I don’t have an imaginary girlfriend.” There’s an annoyance in his tone, met with an amused smirk from his best friend as she looks Maddie up and down and she feels entirely intimidated and scrutinised right then as her heart thumps so hard against her chest, she’s almost sure they can hear it.

“My mommy doesn’t have many friends, just one but Chimney has lots. I heard her telling my uncle. Are you Chimney’s friend?”  Said with all the innocence of a child as she holds up a single digit and Maddie might say something if she were wrong but she likes to keep herself to herself and she had a hard time letting people in. Josh had just managed to worm his way into her heart despite her best protests and Chimney… well, he was different. She feels drawn to him by some invisible force of fate.

Hen ignores the man, opting to look down at the little girl in front of her instead, “I am Chimney’s best friend in the whole world and I have been dying to meet his girlfriend and you. I even invited you both around for a family barbecue this weekend but I have yet to hear back.” Chimney hadn’t mentioned it and that would hurt if she didn’t already know that her answer would have been a not yet,  she wasn’t ready. He was always waiting for her, always sacrificing something for her and she feels awful, especially if the current rumour was that she didn’t even exist.

But now it’s been mentioned in front of Riley which means she will never let it go and Chimney’s arm wraps a little tighter around her as her other hand reaches to rest on the top of Riley’s head, ignoring the raised brow from the woman at the sight of the still blistering but healing burn on her arm. Her daughter smiles, “Will there be kids?”

“There will be, I have a son named Denny, he’s eight and a little girl named Nia, she’s just three years old. And then our other friends have kids, too, don’t they, Chimney?” She wonders if, judging by the tone in her voice, Hen’s a little annoyed at her for not only avoiding family events but keeping Chimney from them by default. If they had a day off together, he’d spend it with her and the guilt is immense as she presses a little more into his side, wondering if it were possible for her to get any more socially awkward than she felt right then.

“I’m five, nearly six. I’m six in eight months and three days, right mommy?”

Nearly six, Maddie almost scoffs out loud at that one but nods her head instead. Hen has the same look on her face as most adults do when they meet Riley - one of shock that she’s quite as vocal as she is and amusement because as talkative as the little girl can be, she’d endearing too with her big, brown eyes and her long hair and ever innocent look on her face. “I’m sorry,” She finally finds herself saying, letting of the grip she’d had on the back of Chimney’s shirt with a shake of her head, “I don’t mean to seem rude or I don’t know, possessive, maybe? I-I don’t... “ She doesn’t know why Hen is looking at her the way she is but she can take a good guess, she might be awkward and shy but she had been a people person and a people pleaser once. “I don’t avoid stuff like that because I want him all to myself and I really am sorry if Chimney has missed things he shouldn’t have, it’s my fault. I’m just... “ Hard work, she finishes in her head before she frowns, “I was just putting it off for as long as I could because I was scared you all wouldn’t like me and I know how much you mean to him, so… I-I don’t know, I was scared of losing him because he respects your opinion and now I’ve done the opposite of my intention and you all probably think I’m an asshole…”

Riley gasps and Maddie groans, “... who curses in front of her kid.” A childish giggle can be heard as she looks down and her daughter looks up at her with a big grin on her face, and she can see the pleading behind her eyes before she can actually voice what she wants to say aloud. “I would love to come to your barbecue if… if you still want me there and if not, that’s cool too because he can totally go alone, I am really not that kind of person, I promise. Even though I clearly make really bad first impressions, you can ask my best friend, I kind of snapped at him my first day and now we’re all good but--”

“You’re rambling.” Chimney cuts her off, thankfully, because her chest is starting to get tight and she realises she's barely taken a breath between all that. Somehow, her body immediately relaxes when his lips are against her cheek and his arm moves a little tighter around her to pull her as close to his body as he possibly can. “I told you, she’s shy and she has Riley to think about, I didn’t want to push her into something she isn’t ready for.”

Hen is about to open her mouth to say something, a sparkle of amusement in her eyes as Maddie cuts her off before she can, “But I am ready, if that’s okay?”

“You heard the woman.” The grin on Chimney’s face is entirely worth it, even if she does make an awful first impression, he had asked her more than once to meet the people he loves and she had felt awful turning him down each and every time. But it’s been a few months and there’s parts of herself and her perception of relationships that she needs to reclaim for herself, no matter what happened once before. “You two can be in charge of the potato salad, is that okay?”

Maddie wants to say no because neither she or Chimney can cook anything and somehow, she doesn't know how, but she’s sure they’ll mess it up. Instead, she nods her head and gulps down her lump in her throat, moving her hand to Riley’s shoulder when she can sense her about to say something, probably about her lack of kitchen abilities. “W-we’ll be there.”

Chimney finally lets go of her, pressing a soft kiss to her temple before he steps forward, back towards the door that Hen had barely crossed the threshold of and Maddie hopes that it’s okay that he has someone now, other than her, who can be there for him on the painful days. “Thanks for coming, you really are a good friend.”

She pulls her daughter towards the living room, deciding it best to give them a moment as both she and her daughter utter a goodbye to the other woman that would no longer be a stranger to her, she supposes, eyes watching as he wraps his arms around her and they smile at each other. It’s good that he has people, and those people have been by his side for such a long time. “Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?” She looks down when she’s back on the couch as Riley snuggles into her side, wrapping an arm tightly around her until she’s almost on her lap.

“I think you and Chimney should buy potato salad from the store or everybody might hate us.”

Her voice is low, a serious look on her face and her eyes wide as she rests her chin on Maddie’s shoulder, causing her to scoff, nodding her head in agreement, “I think that’s a really good idea, baby. A really good idea.”

AMAZING!!! 😭❤️ I was literally just thinking about what if Doug had survived, and then found this, even if it’s not something huge. But Crazy.

Hey! I love your fics and I've enjoyed reading them ever since I fell in love with Madney. Could you do an AU where Doug doesn't die but gets arrested & Maddie, Chimney and Buck have to testify and Maddie's really scared about having to relive it all and facing Doug again but Chimney comforts her and the rest of the Firefam stand behind her in support as she testified?

“I don’t think I can do this.”

They had all been silent up until then, everyone gathered outside of the courthouse, just breathing in the intensity of the last few days. Buck had taken to the stand first, talking about how he had found Chimney lying on the floor outside of her apartment building and then how he had found her in Big Bear. Athena had been next, stoic and professional, going through every step they had taken to find her and what they had found when they had gotten there. And then had come Chimney’s turn and he had spoken of Jason and of what little memory he had of that night and Maddie had been in awe of how brave he had been throughout.

She was last. She couldn’t do what everyone else had done. The panic was starting to set in, she had barely slept for weeks, so terrified of the court day that had been looming over her for almost a year since everything had happened. It was a miracle Doug had survived, she had fought so hard to survive and she had. But at what cost? Because he’s still here and there’s still a chance he could get out in ten years, maybe even less because she doesn’t think she can say anything that she needs to.

When Maddie had walked away from him as he laid in the snow that day, she had truly thought he was dead. A sense of freedom had washed over her, she thought that maybe, just maybe, she could have a future one day, one that didn’t involve looking over her shoulder. Doug’s death, as temporary as it had been, had felt like a relief. For just a moment, she had felt as though maybe it could be possible to breathe again. She had been suffocating for so long, she’s not sure she knows how to breathe now.

I feel kinda evil for doing this, but here’s a small SNEEK PEEK into my next chapter for The Start of Something Good. I’m finishing up the final scene for chapter 3, with Maddie and Chimney, and then once I edit it I’ll be posting it. So it should be out either later today if I get really inspired or early Tuesday. Enjoy! 😈

Darkness.

He hates that everything he sees now is dark and he doesn't know why.

Chimney has been here before he knows that, and he thinks that it may have been right before he suddenly just appeared in that woman’s bathroom. In Maddie’s bathroom. It was as if one moment he was engulfed in nothing but black that stretched for miles, and the next he was blinking his eyes so they could adjust to the ceiling light. But now he’s back in this dark and lonely space, and he can’t tell where he is or if here is even a place. Chimney doesn’t know how long has passed either. He doesn’t think time passes here anyway.

But then, unlike the first time he was here, a bright light appears before him, the colors close enough to be compared to a sunset shining across his features. Chimney can’t put it into words, but the closest he would be able to say about the light is that it’s beautiful...he hasn’t seen anything like it. Not only that though, the feeling of peace and pure love like nothing he’s ever felt before, not even for his own mother, is invading his very system.

He still doesn’t want to admit that he’s dead, but isn’t this what Maddie had meant by seeing a light? It has to be, because she said crossing over would bring peace and that’s exactly what he feels.

That love is so tempting, and Chimney takes a few steps towards it. It has been so long since he felt that feeling solely directed at him, and he can feel no negativity as he continues to walk forward. He isn’t being judged, or mocked, or feeling like he failed...no, he feels cherished in this very moment. Like anything wrong he may have done, no matter how awful, it didn’t matter. Everything is okay, and this light is meant for everyone after death. Maybe going into the light wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Another great film is Enough with Jennifer Lopez!! Found it years ago and it’s one of my favorites as well.

Madney + sleeping with the enemy au

Maddie rips open the cabinet, staring fearfully at the perfectly aligned stack of cans she had left specifically unorganized in the absence of her controlling husband. He’s found her, the tears immediate as she shakily backs away with intent to run out of the house, only stopped short of her exit by the boombox strategically placed in front of the door and playing the horrible classical music her husband had so often tormented her with.

Barely a second later, Doug is standing behind her, his arm around her neck and a gun held loosely in his hand, kissing her hair and telling her he missed her, when a knock at the door startles them both and the gun flies in front of her face threatening to kill whoever it is that interrupts them.

“Maddie, you there?” It’s Chimney, the amazing guy from next door she had just been getting to know and who obviously couldn’t wait to see her again after their beautiful date. With Doug’s guidance, she tentatively opens the door a crack so only she can be seen, making small talk of being tired and is able to get rid of him rather quickly, feeling both relief for his safety and fear for her own as the door closes and she is once again alone with the man she fears the most.

“He doesn’t matter,” Doug tells her, and as she backs away ready to face whatever wrath she knows is coming towards her, the door bursts open, Chimney having sensed something wasn’t right, and all hell breaks loose.

AHHHH YESSSS!!! LAW AND ORDER SVU IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!!

Madney + law and order SVU au 👀

They’d been in there for about ten minutes when the door to Captain Benson’s office swings open, revealing the newest member of the team, “Rollins, Fin, Han- I’d like you to meet our new recruit from just outside Philly, Detective Maddie Buckley,” Captain Benson says with an air of confidence that is both intimidating yet somehow charming.

“Han, Buckley will be partnered with you now that Carisi is playing lawyer,” the boss lady announces, an amused smile on her face when she notes the gleam in the senior detectives eyes at the order, knowing the trouble she is probably setting herself up for by pairing these two together.

The group exchanges small talk and pleasantries, the new partners inching closer and closer toward each other as they chat, a palpable undeniable chemistry in the air around them, and as Captain Benson retreats into the confines of her office a few moments later, eyeing the duo, she’s more than certain she is definitely playing with fire.

Day 1:

“You’ve never looked more beautiful.”

Maddie & Chimney were exhausted and they looked the part of new parents. Both were dressed in sweatpants, Chimney hadn’t shaved in ten days so he had a little stubble growing and there was spit-up on Maddie’s shirt. She was trying to rock their new-born daughter to sleep, a little desperation in her voice as she knew she had only two hours left to prepare for the big 118 dinner that was being hosted at the station by Bobby & Athena in honor of their daughter’s birth.

“Come on, my sweet girl, you want to go to sleep for Mommy, don’t you?” Maddie had told Chimney to go take a shower, so that at least one of them started getting ready. The baby continued to look up at her mother with wide brown eyes that reminded her of her father’s, and her desperation softens into adoration for the little life that her and Chimney had created.

Maddie looks down at herself and thinks that there’s no way that Chimney would ever be attracted to her in her current state. She thinks that she should be making more of an effort to be groomed while taking care of Amelia. Her hair’s a mess, there are dark circles under her eyes and she’s wearing old t-shirt and sweatpants. But she’s just so tired all of the time. He deserves better.

When Chimney emerges from the shower, he spots a sleeping baby in Maddie’s arms. He frowns when he sees tears in his girlfriend’s eyes. “Maddie, what’s wrong?” He asks softly, bending down in front of her and taking her hands into his own.

“I’m a mess, Chimney. I should be handling this better. I haven’t been to work since a few weeks before Amelia’s birth, so I know it’s putting pressure on you. And we haven’t been close to each other for weeks. I mean, how can we when I look like this?”

“Hey,” Chimney’s voice becomes stern, as it rarely does. “You’re not allowed to think that way, okay? You really think that I’m not attracted to you, Maddie? I’m more attracted to you than I’ve ever been. I think you’ve never looked more beautiful. You know why? Because motherhood has brought out this new sense of joy in you that I’ve never seen before. And that joy and happiness on your face makes you look like the most beautiful woman in the world.

Yes, we haven’t been intimate in a while. But that’s because we’re taking care of our little girl. Once we become more used to our new routine, I’m sure we’ll carve out some time for each other. Alone, doing things that we can’t in front of her. But don’t think I’m holding out because I’m not attracted to you because that’s the farthest thing from the truth.”

Maddie blinks away her tears as she looks lovingly at the man who holds her heart. “I love you so much.”

“I love you, Maddie. And I love our baby girl.”

Okay, Here Is My Bingo Card For Anyone Who Wants To Submit A Prompt. Im Always Open For Any Prompt Outside

Okay, here is my bingo card for anyone who wants to submit a prompt. I’m always open for any prompt outside the bingo card as well, just keep in mind I don’t write smut, sorry! I was going to wait to post this until I had chapter 3 posted to my GW au 9-1-1 story, but I’ve been a bit preoccupied with writing another Madney au of my favorite book series, The Darkest Minds. I am finishing up chapter 3 though soon. I’ve also been really busy lately, so just know it may take a bit for me to publish any stories people request, but I will try hard to get them out as soon as possible!

Yes, another great chapter! 😭🥰

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

It’s definitely too late but his heart is big and his need is great. To be loved by the two people who should have unconditionally done so from the moment he was born, that was all he had ever wanted and needed from them. And he now knows that they did love him but they didn’t know how to show it because they had been so wrapped up in what they had lost that they didn’t see what they could have gained from him and from his life.

49. “Who hurt you?”

Maddie sniffs as she stares down at her bruised and swollen wrist, trying not to get lost in the gentleness and the kindness of the doctor as he examines her head. He’s apprehensive, just an intern, he had told her before he had stumbled over his words and asked her if she wanted him to get a resident instead. She had hoped an intern would be easier to fool, that less questions would be asked or he wouldn’t notice the ones that went unanswered. She was studying to be a nurse, she knew her wrist wasn’t broken, just badly sprained and a few stitches in her head and everything would be okay again.

“Who hurt you?” The question isn’t delicate at all, a look of concern in his eyes, and she realises he hadn’t believed her fumbled excuse of tripping outside the steps of the library. It had been what happened, but she’d had a little help from her boyfriend in the tripping process during an argument over how she spent more time with her friends than she did with him. They were only twenty-one and had only known each other for not even a year, she hadn’t been prepared for such a serious relationship in the midst of what were meant to be the best years of her life. Not with him anyway.

She couldn’t leave him, she had tried to break up with him several times but it always ended the same and she doesn’t know what to do. Maddie is embarrassed because to the outside world, he’s the perfect boyfriend. He wines and dines her, buys her expensive gifts, talks about her as though she is his entire world and her friends swoon over him, even her parents absolutely adore him. He’s going to be a surgeon, he’s going to give her a good life, what more could she ask for?

Maddie chews down on her bottom lip as she mulls the question over. This was the worst he had hurt her in their short relationship but it was escalating with every single time. This time, he’d pushed her down a flight of concrete stairs and it could have ended worse than it had. Although, a cracked head, two broken ribs, a sprained wrist and a broken ankle wasn’t exactly something to be ignored. He was volatile, she had met his parents and she could see why. He was entitled and snotty and she has no idea why he had ever shown an interest in her in the first place but she had gotten lost in the romance of it all and now, she’s thinking of dropping out of college because she can’t tell the police. Dr Kendall, his father, has more contacts and money than she could ever imagine. Her parents had nothing, she was on a scholarship and Doug liked to remind her of the fact his dad had more power over the administrators of their college than she would care to imagine.

She doesn’t know if he’s being honest but the threat always lingers in the air which is enough.

Gentle hands of Dr Han move to her wrist, brushing his fingers along the bruised skin there as he examines it. “The x-ray shows that it’s just a sprain, so I’ll wrap it up for you.” He takes a breath and she wonders if he’s going to push the subject any further because she still hasn’t replied. “Your ankle is broken though, I’m gonna get a consultation from ortho but we should have you fixed up in no time.”

“My boyfriend.” She finally says, looking into the kind of eyes of this stranger, “He pushed me down the stairs during an argument.” She tries to disassociate herself from what had happened and she wishes that she could say it was a one-off and it would never happen again but she knows better. She wishes she didn’t but she does. “His dad works at this hospital, he’s probably going to work here one day too and he’ll work his way up quicker than everyone else because that’s just the way it goes when your daddy is the Chief of Surgery, right?” Now it’s obvious, the words have been spoken and there’s no getting out of it as she looks at the young, handsome doctor standing in front of her with a frown on his face, eyes darting from one side of her face to the other as though he’s trying to find the words to speak right then. “Anyways, it’s fine. I know we need to break up, I’m just figuring out how to do that without him hurting me again or figuring out a way to take everything away from me. It’s not like I can just switch colleges. You probably think I’m an idiot.”

“No, no, I do not think you’re an idiot. I uh, I’m just trying to figure out what to say without sounding like I’m patronizing you.” There’s a nervous edge to his voice that elicits a laugh from her as she shrugs her shoulders.

“It’s fine, you don’t have to say anything. I’ll figure it out, don’t worry about me. I’ve been figuring things out for as long as I can remember.” Maybe she can last it out another year until she graduates and then dump him, pack her bags and run off to the first hospital that will hire her. It’s not the best plan in the world because if he pushed her down a flight of stairs in a moment of anger, she doesn’t know what else he’s capable of in the next year, especially when she has finals and her family are going to want her back for the holidays and that’ll become a sore point, too. He doesn’t like anything that takes her away from him, either in person or of mind. Possessive doesn’t even begin to describe him.

“Listen, I am totally overstepping here and I can go grab another doctor if this makes you feel uncomfortable but if you ever need somewhere safe to stay or someone to help you, I can give you my number?” The flush of his cheeks is endearing and she can’t believe she’s even thinking of flirting with him given the circumstances but still, she tilts her head to the side with a small smile.

“And what would I put your contact down as? Dr Han?”

His laugh makes her heart skip a beat and she almost rolls her eyes at her own thoughts, watching him wrap her wrist with more care and consideration than she could ever imagine from the man who had said ‘I love you’ on their second date barely a year ago. “Howie, my friends call me Howie.”

Maddie feels herself sitting up a little straighter as she smiles, “That’s a kind offer, Howie, I wouldn’t want to put you in the line of fire in any way at all. Especially not if you have to work in the same place as his father.”

All he does is shrug his shoulders as he pulls out a card from his pocket, writing a number on the back of it, “My ma was in an abusive relationship, if someone could have reached out to help her in whatever way possible, it would have saved her life. Besides, even if you’re not ready to leave him, it’s always good to have a friend, right?”

Her heart aches for him when she sees the pain in his eyes, nodding her head a little when she takes the card from his outstretched hand, wanting to apologise for his mom but not sure she can utter those words without bursting into tears. That wasn’t her future, she was certain of that because… she could get out. She just needed to figure out how and when. “Right.” She whispers, staring down at his number as she smiles sadly. “I really am going to be okay though but uh, I’m a nursing student, so it always helps to have friends in the medical field.” She tries to play it down with a casual shrug of her shoulders, knowing by the look in his eyes that he sees right through it.

He opens his mouth to say something, only for the curtains to open, “Hey, babe, I bought a hot chocolate.” And Howie’s mouth slams closed as he does everything in his power not to look at the man he knows is responsible for why she is in that hospital bed right then.

“Thanks. I was just telling Dr Han here about my clumsy tumble down the stairs.”

There’s a hand on her shoulder and she sees the way the doctor flinches as he tries to focus on her ankle, as though he hadn’t already examined it, “That’s right, she’d pulled another all nighter and I guess she won’t be doing that again.” Maddie gulps, looking up at her boyfriend with a nod of her head. No, she won’t be doing that again.

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

She hates the words for falling from her mouth, hoping that her brother understands that her intentions have only ever been to protect him. This had always been the plan, though she had never voiced it to him. She had to do everything she could to ensure that if Doug was going to leave this apartment - it would be alone or with her and only her. “This was your fault, Maddie, if you had just stayed.”

Oooh Maddie/Madney + passing out from pain 😈

It started 20 minutes before her shift was due to end, her stomach feeling uneasy, but quickly growing into what Maddie could only guess, and dreaded, had to be the stomach bug going around. She should have known it would eventually reach her. The bug had been spread throughout the entire firehouse, all starting with Buck who claimed he was perfectly fine to work one shift when Bobby so clearly saw straight through that lie. He could barely stand without swaying let alone running into burning buildings, so not even an hour in Bobby sent Buck home to rest up and get well.

And then Bobby came down with the bug only a few days later, and he ended up giving it to Eddie, who gave it to Hen, and of course with her being partners with Chimney he was bound to get it. Maddie spent the better part of two days nursing her boyfriend back to health. Everyone bounced back rather quickly she had to admit, but Maddie really isn’t looking forward to spending her foreseeable future hunched over the toilet just as Chimney had not even a week ago.

20 minutes is usually nothing for Maddie. She can help between 2-4 people in that time frame depending on the situation on the other end of the phone, or if it’s a slow day she’ll lean back in her chair and usually chat with Josh. Now though, each minute feels like an hour as the discomfort she feels in her stomach builds to a small pain. It’s with a sigh of relief her shift finally ends and she practically runs out of the building and gets in her car, she just needs sleep. Maybe a good night's rest would halt whatever she felt coming on.

But the minute she walks into the apartment Maddie feels just a little guilty for wanting to head straight for the bedroom when she spots two takeaway containers from her favorite Chinese restaurant. The idea of eating is almost enough to make her throw up on the spot, but she knows Chimney has barely eaten anything that wasn’t soup for the last 3 days and probably decided to order in now that he’s finally feeling great and can keep it down. Maddie doesn’t want to admit she isn’t feeling well either when Chimney comes walking down the hallway from their bedroom with a grin on his face, happy to see her. She can suck it up and spend an hour with him, she decides.

Not even 15 minutes in though Maddie finds herself not only with an upset stomach, but a headache too. It’s already been a long day for her with calls that just kept coming and coming and not allowing Maddie to take a much needed break to compose herself before moving onto another one. Listening to Chimney explain a weird call the team had today, of course through Buck’s perspective because Chimney’s first day back is tomorrow, is becoming harder and harder, until eventually the only thing Maddie can actually hear is the pounding in her head.

“Maddie, are you okay?”

“Huh?” She looked up from her still full container and knew she was caught. Chimney is looking at her with concern in his eyes. He seems to hesitate at first, but moves his hand to her forehead and Maddie leans in to the cool touch. “Oh my god Maddie you’re burning up. Are you not feeling well?”

“No.” She caves, finally dropping the plastic fork in her hand, and rubbing her temples instead to try and give her head some relief. “I think I’m getting what you had, I’ve felt it coming on about halfway through the day.”

“Why didn’t you say anything? You should be in bed right now.”

“Well I was going to, but you looked so happy when I came in I didn’t have the heart to tell you I wasn’t feeling up to dinner.”

“Maddie, you feeling better is more important than anything else. Now you go lie down and I’ll clean up out here and meet you in the bedroom.” She nodded, giving him a soft smile. By the time Chimney actually did come back she was out cold.

And Before going to bed, Maddie hoped that’s how it would stay all night. Sleep was the only thing anyone really wanted when sick. So shooting out of bed at 3 am isn't exactly ideal, especially when Maddie knew what was coming next. She threw back the covers, not bothering to reach for any lights, and headed straight for the bathroom. She reached the toilet just in time for her to expel the remaining little food she managed to keep down the day before. And if that weren’t bad enough, that small pain she experienced earlier is now way bigger, and if she weren’t already curled up on the floor vomiting into the toilet bowl she most definitely would be from the pain in her side.

Out of the corner of her eye she can see the hallway light flick on and Chimney appear in the doorway, not moving straight away just a bit dazed from sleep. But when it finally hits him he’s bending down right next to her. “Maddie?” He’s rubbing a gentle hand up and down her back, using his other one to hold her hair out of her face, and only let’s go when she’s more dry heaving then vomiting. Chimney knew this was coming because he had just gone through it, but the way Maddie is holding her right side and doubles over in pain is enough to make him worry more than he feels like he should be. “Maddie is it your stomach or your side that hurts?”

“My side, it hurts really bad.” This suddenly feels like more than a stomach bug, and that makes things feel so much worse because if it isn’t something as simple as a stomach bug than what is it? Chimney has a few guesses actually, but his brain can't really focus on anything but his girlfriend on the floor in pain, and it’s enough to make him announce he’s calling 911.

He shoots through the bedroom door and fumbles through his nightstand looking for his phone, his panicked state only rising when he doesn’t find it. He takes a moment to let out a breath of air and run his hands through his hair, the memory of leaving it on the coffee table hitting him full force. He left it there after ordering the Chinese food but forgot to bring it back to the room after Maddie announced she wasn’t feeling well.

Sure enough it’s still sitting there in the exact position he placed it in, and he picks it up and dials 911. As he’s telling his address to the dispatcher he sees Maddie exit the bathroom and slowly walk down the hallway towards him. She’s still clutching her side and is wobbling a bit, as if standing is an effort. The look on her face is enough for Chimney to let the phone crash to the floor and dash towards her.

He manages to reach Maddie a second before she faints.

————O~O~O————

Heavy.

That is the best way to describe how Maddie feels at this moment. She couldn’t move her legs or arms; any part of her body for that matter, it felt more like she is struggling against a restraint that she’s pretty sure isn’t even there. Even opening her eyes feels like too much and while the darkness is calling out to her once again, she forces herself to feel past the heavy eyelids and actually manages to open them just a little because a voice is telling her to; and she can’t quite make out who it is yet, but she knows that voice and can practically feel the urgency, worry, and relief coming off of them in one big wave.

For just a moment she sees the color white, before the blinding bright lights that hang above are forcing them back closed. A few more blinks and Maddie is finally able to keep her eyes open, and she can see Chimney standing by the right side of her bed holding her hand, which she hadn’t even felt until then.

“God, Maddie. You scared the hell out of me.” And she’s sure she did, because he looks like hell at the moment. His hair is pointed in every which direction and...is he still wearing the same pjs he had on when...well actually she realizes she doesn’t know how long it’s been or what happened to her. The last thing she can remember is being in a lot of pain on their bathroom floor and then...nothing. “What happened?”

“Well, you passed out on me that’s what happened. The ambulance came and rushed you to the hospital. It turns out that the stomach bug was actually appendicitis.” Oh, well that suddenly makes sense in the span of things. For a few weeks, every so often, her back would have these sudden sharp pains for half of a second and then disappear, and she hadn’t been eating as much as she usually does this past week. Then there was the pain in her side, a clear sign. She kind of just deduced it down to stress, but the nurse side of her should have caught on quicker.

“Just great,” she mumbles. “I think I would have preferred that stomach bug.” Chimney let’s out a small laugh, finally relaxing after almost a whole day of worrying.

“I would prefer neither happen to you. I’m just glad they caught it and you’re safe. I love you so much.” Chimney leans down and gives her a small kiss which she reciprocates, only pulling back when his phone starts to vibrate in his pocket. “Who’s that?”

“Your brother, who says he’s on his way up from the gift shop right now.”

“Oh boy, I don’t want to imagine what Buck is going to bring through that door.”

“Me either. Having to walk out of the hospital with that many balloons after my rebar accident was a nightmare.” Maddie smiles, trying her hardest not to laugh as it hurt when she did.

“Okay, he says he needs me to open the door. You ready?”

“Nope, but let him in.”

Fun Fact: I actually had Appendicitis the summer going into 9th grade. It was not fun. The symptoms I wrote for Maddie was pretty much what I experienced. A whole summer on bed rest was AGONIZING. My siblings and cousins were all going outside, swimming, playing sports...I’m not still bitter. I swear. 🙃

Anyways, hope you guys enjoyed this, my first @badthingshappenbingo prompt. Thank you @maddieandchimney for suggesting it, and I hope it somewhat meets your expectations! I’ll update my bingo card with my next post, feel free to leave prompts!
