Bird Of Prey - Tumblr Posts
obsessed with how gymnogenes just scream. she should start a podcast.
went on a hike with some friends on saturday to do some birdwatching and we were thoroughly entertained by this rock kestrel who chased this jackal buzzard around for like 20 minutes ðŸ˜

these are super zoomed in pics so not the best quality im afraid, but this poor jack could not catch a break LMAO
kestrel chased him out of where he had been trying to hunt, and tormented him for another 20 mins (the jack tried to swipe at him once or twice) before leaving him alone. the poor jack went to sit down to catch his breath and as soon as he flew off again he got chased by like 6 pied crows ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ poor man

what a beast

So far since this Spring, this is some feathers left on the land by our friends the birds. A count of 63 on the coffee table + 10 more found this morning. So a total of 73. The entire collection is way bigger and has been all consecrated inside a glass-door cabinet and cannot be removed from it.
This set of feathers will eventually join the others as soon as it will be consecrated. Can you imaging all the natural energy regenerated every day into that glass-door feathers cabinet? And of course no need to mention that this collection expends from season to season.
To name a few from this season’s set we can see: Common Raven, Canadian Big Crow, Osprey aka Sea Hawk, Common Grackle, Blue Jays, North Canada’s Downy and the Sapsucker Woodpecker, Merlin Falcon, Mourning dove and the small American Goldfinch.
Unbelievable… ! Thank you my friends. We’ll make sure to refill your feeding stations every morning.
The One with the Shadow
The shadow of a Predator has been noticed with the west side entrance surveillance camera of the property. The alarm occurs at 13sec. from right to left up on the screen.
No big deal but still a nice shadow, which from the speed of it, is surely from an Osprey, Raven or an Eagle. It's just too bad that we missed the direct eye contact.

When I'm in the woods, I'm always looking for feathers to add to my collection and the bigger one the better it is. The idea of finding the smallest feather never occur to me, but today it happened and I'm more than happy.
Could say that it's coming from a Mourning Dove cause they're many in this area but, who knows.

#DormantPhaseNest
This dormant nest is only visible at this time of the year; when leaves are gone.
#NorthernBarredOwl
The hoot of a Northern Barred Owl (Canadian Chouette rayée aka la Chouette Folle) has been heard last night. My girlfriend caught the sound with her mobile. Of course no picture or video has been made; It is always pitch dark around here at night. But the sound is great. It was around 2am.

Birds of prey are really not welcome in Raven's territory; especially when raising a family. Ravens will attack if one of their young is threatened or sometimes for no particular reason. Either way the attacker or simply the trespasser must quickly fly away before he loses some feathers.
We've seen a Hawk being chase this Spring for hovering above the nest, like in this video, and we're able to say that Ravens can fly amazingly fast.
I'm reblogging this last Spring video because an other Hawk was hoovering the Raven's nest yesterday. It is the third year in a row.
These hawks attack nests with young birds to feast on them and this time the male Raven has decided that it was enough and attacked back that Hawk. We didn't have time to make a video or take pictures; the sky-attack lasted only 15sec. but the Hawk lost some feathers like in last Spring's video.
Lesson learned: Hawks really need to leave Raven's nest in peace and go catch some mammals from the ground, like they usually do.

#CrimeScene
Definitely another vicious attack happened here between a Raptor and a small mammal. Probably a Hawk against a Jackrabbit or a Squirrel. There are no traces of any paws around. Even small feathers have been found along with pieces of fur. And the way I see it, the Raptor has won and left in the air with his catch again.
Small open fields around here are best known by predators who wish to fill their stomach.

#TurkeyBuzzard
I stumbled on this magnificent Urubu à Tête Rouge last evening. He was very far from me and the sundown was setting his way just in front of my leans so, not a 100% clear shot.
But here's to say… with the Northern climate around here forcing them to have more meat on their shoulders, these guys are larger in size than the neotropics one. They can easily weight up to 5 pounds given them a large wingspan of 70 inches which allows them to hoover for kilometers, even with no winds.
And wearing a war painted face mask with an impressive athletic stature like that, they can easily roam many territories.

#BroadWingedHawk
So when these guys catch their lunch in flight, the impact is so violent that feathers are ripped off right in the air and sometimes even with a part of skin which falls down at our feet. Like a scalp.
…they are Mourning Dove feathers.

The Bearded Vulture is the only known animal whose diet is almost exclusively bone.

The bone-eating giant bird which coats itself minerals like copper to get its rusty hue for unknown cosmetic reasons, most likely to show dominance. The brighter the hue, the more dominant the male.
They probably need the copper because its anti-bacterial properties. useful if you’re a carrion eater.

The bird has a 9 ft wingspan.

Bearded Vultures provide an indispensable service to the ecosystem, checking the spread of disease by consuming corpses. But the bearded’s diet is 95 percent bone. It can wait for the other scavengers to strip the body clean, then stroll in at its leisure to take its fill.
