The giant Australian cuttlefish (Sepia apama) is a species of cephalopod from the genus of true cuttlefish of the cuttlefish family (Sepiidae). Reaching 50 cm in mantle length and over 10.5 kg in live weight, they are considered the largest cuttlefish in the world. They are called the “rock stars of the ocean” because, with a life cycle of only 12-18 months, they live fast and die young .
The giant cuttlefish is an endemic species found exclusively in coastal waters in the south, south-west and south-east of Australia (from the coast of Queensland to Shark Bay in Western Australia). It is found at a depth of no more than 100 meters, but most often in shallow water.
It is unclear for what reason, but nature endowed these living creatures with 3 hearts. One is responsible for supplying blood to the nervous system, and the other two are responsible for the functioning of the gills. These cuttlefish are famous for their ability to instantly change their color, which most often depends on the mood of the animal or the environment. It also changes greatly in males during the mating season. During the mating season or during an attack on prey, their color acquires a metallic sheen and is covered with bright luminous dots.
These giants are diurnal. They spend most of their time hidden among kelp beds, rocky reefs, or buried on the seabed. They spend most of their energy not on activity, but on growth. They are very curious and love to play, which divers often take advantage of.

Nautilus is a genus of cephalopods, which are classified as "living fossils". The most common species is Nautilus pompilius. Nautilus belong to the only modern genus of the Nautiloid subclass. The first representatives of the Nautiloids appeared in the Cambrian, and its development took place during the Paleozoic. The Nautilids almost died out on the border of the Triassic and Jurassic, but still survived to the present day, unlike their Ammonite relatives. Some species of ancient Nautilus reached a size of 3.5 m. Representatives of the largest species of modern nautilus reach a maximum size of 25 cm.
The spiral "house" of the mollusk consists of 38 chambers and is "built" according to a complex mathematical principle (the law of logarithmic progression). All chambers, except the last and largest, where the nautilus body with nine dozen "legs" is located, are connected through holes with a siphon. The nautilus shell is two–layered: the upper (outer) layer – porcelain–like - really resembles fragile porcelain, and the inner, with a mother-of-pearl luster - mother-of-pearl. The nautilus's "house" grows with its owner, who moves as the shell grows into a larger chamber. The empty dwelling of a mollusk after its death can be found far from its habitat – after the death of the "owner", their shells remain afloat and move at the will of waves, winds and currents.
Interestingly, the Nautilus moves "blindly", backwards, without seeing or imagining the obstacles that may be in its path. And another amazing quality of these ancient inhabitants of the Earth is that they have amazing regeneration: in just a few hours, the wounds on their bodies heal, and in case of loss of tentacles, a new one grows quickly.

So this is what I was asking that random question for!
Now you can make your buddies do a double-take- and the cuttlefish’s color should match whatever shirt color you choose~!
Or you can pick soft rainbows or bright rainbows for the cuttlefish to adorn itself with~! <3
You can get the version for light t-shirt colors here~
And the one for dark t-shirt colors is here~
Soft pastel right here~
Bright neon over there!
Today is Wet Beast Wednesday!
Today's wet beast is: Blanket Octopus

Olive's Wet Beast Fact: these venomous beauties range drastically in size, with the males around the size of a walnut, and the females up to 6 feet long. Personally, I think they look more like Cinderella's torn up dress than they do a blanket, but whatever.
Stay tuned for more Wet Beast Wednesdays!
Cephalopoda traumatizing my favorite anti-heroes
Why?
After Miraak escapes with the last Dragonborn, I can see tentacles trying to pull Miraak back to apocrypha and Mimi screaming for the ldb to help.
Uncle Mory only has a taste for first dragonborns, apparently, and just doesn’t like the remake as much as the original? Even though it was partly his fault that the original was ruined?
So Miraak screams for the ldb to help but they’re just chill, like Smee and playfully slapping the tentacles away enough to keep him.
Like Captain hook and the Octopus from Peter Pan 2.
Slapstic ensures. By the end of it Miraak’s robes are ruined and he is pretty much in just his mask and his adorkable heart boxers. IF he even wears underwear. I don’t think people had underwear 4000+ years ago.

I like squids the normal amount....
They consume my life, and when I'm sad I open my file folder of pictures I'm collecting to make myself feel better.

Just some light reading with my little guy
Definitely not avoiding names because they 100% have them.... Just don't ask.

I never want to do perspective work again, I hate this :)
It's coming along great, but it's taking me hours just to figure out on thing because my brain hole doesn't work

WHAT THE FUCK DID THEY PUT IN THE WATER OF THIS DLC

Need a tiny cephalopod to brighten your day? Meet the bobtail squid (Euprymna berryi)! Also known as the hummingbird squid, this critter typically grows only up to 2 in (5 cm) in length; females are larger than males. This species lives in Indo-Pacific waters, inhabiting the ocean floor where it burrows beneath sand to rest or hide when under threat. Its striking color comes from chromatophores, or pigment-holding cells, distributed throughout its body.

WHO REPOSTED MY CEPHALOPOD POST ALMOST 24 TIMES?!?!?!!?
*holds squirt gun to your head* fun sea animal facts. now

POV: you went diving at night and spotted Ordovician nautiloids feasting on a eurypterid carcass, after a while the commotion has attracted the giants, slowly creeping into view
In which I achieve a lifelong dream, of sitting on the seafloor with a bunch of giant Australian cuttlefish

This morning I checked a major bucket list item off the list: hanging out w/Giant Australian Cuttlefish. They're super focused on mating, and are shockingly chill about people hanging around. I'd heard this was true, but whew, it was wild to experience firsthand.
It's a rare thing for an animal to reliably be found at a certain place & certain time. So often "lifer" animals depend on luck to seen. With these cuttlefish, so far it's been like clockwork. Late May-August, go to Whyalla in winter, and there they are, resplendent and numerous.
Good news:they're reliable + stunning. Bad news: Whyalla is a friggen hike from Philly & the water is a bit chilly (58 degrees F today). If you want to swim with them, you better get a thick wetsuit on and maybe be a bit cold (I was honestly too excited to be cold).
Seeing mating behavior up close was so completely amazing. The males perform dominance displays where they roll black bars across their body directly at another male. It's mind-blowing to see in person. They generally do it with the half of their body facing the other male.

Cephalopods are quick-change artists. Like a living LCD screen, their skin can flicker and flash, or create complex patterns for camouflage and communication. Layers of specialized skin cells interact to match the environment’s color and texture.
You can see the largest, most diverse living exhibit of cephalopods ever created in our special exhibition Tentacles: The Astounding Lives of Octopuses, Squid and Cuttlefishes.
I was not aware
Fellow monster fuckers and freaks, were you AWARE that tentacle porn is based in truth? Because I sure as shit wasn’t. I, like I assume many others, thought that though hot, tentacles used for day to day movement having legitimate sexual purposes was untrue. A work of fiction from horny minds. I was wrong.
I was curious you see, because I got to thinking ‘well now how /do/ octopi mate?’ Turns out, -/TURNS OUT/- that on a male octopus, their reproductive organ is actually their third tentacle on their right side. It’s a modified tentacle, a ‘specialized appendage’ if you will, called a hectocotylus, a mating arm. (Also a good portion on the end doesn’t have sucker cups) And squid have the same thing for the most part.
Depending on the species, the male can use it just as a conduit to the female how other species use a penis, or they might wrench it off and present it to the female for her to use herself. Either way Insemination is accomplished.
SO—the point of this is, is that characters getting fucked by the cephalopod-ish eldritch horror’s tentacles and them /actually/ coming inside them like that, is not so unrealistic. It’s just one tentacle that can do the cumming, but still, I just can’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before now.
~~~~~Not really relevant, but most of the time during octopus mating, the male will just sit beside the female and casually place the mating tentacle in like the most awkward copulation you’ll see. It’s kinda cute and funny looking.
