All of Kaz's interactions with Colm are so incredible to me. Every single conversation is just:
Colm: Whatcha working on kiddo?

Inej when the Dregs hurt Kaz:
inej ghafa's parents don't care that she's lied to, and stolen from, and killed other people. they don't care that she's sinned, or gone against every religious practice that their family held dear. all of that gets thrown aside the second they see their daughter alive and happy and all they really do care about is that she finally found peace and freedom in the barrel and with its bastard.
"Kaz and Inej wouldn't get married" she's religious and he wants the tax incentives, what's not clicking
I feel like the "Kaz pushes Inej away bc he thinks he's not enough for her" trope that I see a lot in fics is kind of a big misread of Kaz's character and leans too far into the standard "sad bad boy" character type. Kaz calls Inej "lovely and brave and better than anything he deserved" but a lot of people seem to forget the very next line where he says he's "not so broken that he couldn’t pull himself together into some semblance of a man for her."
Like, Kaz sees that Inej is better than he deserves, and his response to that isn't "I should treat her like shit so she'll give up on me", it's "challenge fucking accepted." If you tell him a safe is uncrackable, he won't stop until he's cracked it, and if you tell him he's not good enough for the girl he loves, he'll spend the rest of his life trying to be.
"Sorry, but Kaz and Inej's story would end tragically, they're just destined to be miserable and that's the only accurate reading of the books."
