I’ve been reading a LOT of Addek fanfiction and the topic of Derek’s death isn’t discussed enough
like that was her person for what 16 years and i know like really he and Meredith are like soulmates but Addison was married to him longer than Meredith even knew him
I think that the reaction of Derek’s death (especially since she already loss Mark) shoulda been something we saw in the show and it upsets me that it’s not explored enough

merder: speak now (young, exciting, passionate. romantic and jaded at the same time. all about flash in the pan love affairs and on and off relationships. also this was ts’s feral era which i think tracks for meredith. enchanted, sparks fly, haunted, ours, i can see you. bonus: better than revenge, for the meraddek triangle)
addek: red (characterized by nostalgia. half breakup album, half love album. a little all over the place. feels like a retrospective on a relationship. if speak now is young, red is about looking back. and in my head baby addek is very fall. holy ground, all too well, treacherous, i almost do, the last time, sad beautiful tragic, the moment i knew, red.)
maddison: 1989 (New York Album. heartbreaking lyrics disguised as fun light pop songs. makes me think of young maddek friendship, the flirtation before the affair, the two months in new york hiding from their real lives and the gossip, trying to salvage something out of the big mess they made. style, out of the woods, slut!, wildest dreams, wonderland, now that we don’t talk)
meddison: lover. (out of the wreckage type love. or post wreckage type love. passionate but ultimately mature, longing, reflective. after the heartbreak of red, after the drama of 1989, after the reinvention of reputation. cruel summer, the archer, paper rings, lover, miss americana & the heartbreak prince, false god, daylight)
marek: reputation. (guys hear me out. i wasn’t even gonna include this pairing but then i had the insane thought that mark and derek kind of have taylor and karlie energy lmao. derek running across the country to become a flannel wearing wood chopping fisherman and not answering anybody’s calls has the same energy as taylor blacking out her social media. the old derek can’t come to the phone right now. why? cause he’s dead. this is why we can’t have nice things, look what you made me do.
i am a big believer in the “addek was meant to have a sad baby backstory” theory bc there is just so much stuff in the early seasons that could be interpreted as foreshadowing or implying things. i think shonda even said she wanted to do one but decided against it. personally, i think they didn’t end up doing it because it would have made addison too sympathetic. not as a character in general because they were never really trying to make her an outright villain, but in the breakdown of their marriage. because “husband is absent, wife cheats with best friend, husband runs away” = husband is kind of a jerk but ultimately the wife fucked up majorly and it’s mostly her fault. but “husband and wife lose baby, husband distanced himself when wife needed him, so she cheats on him and he runs away”= much much more complicated. derek couldn’t be meredith’s prince charming/mcdreamy if he was the guy who essentially left his wife after losing a baby.

yes. i’m also a first time watcher (slowly trudging my way through season 13) i just spend way too much time thinking about the dynamics in those first three seasons. off the top of my head, i think there was a ton of subtext in their scenes together on addison’s first case in seattle (the ttts case she flew in for). there scenes in the NICU especially. when they’re talking about the baby and addison is all like “she just needs someone to fight for her” and it’s all emotionally charged. i don’t remember the exact dialogue but i remember it was clearly like they were talking about two things at once. and sure, it could be interpreted as addison pushing for fighting for their marriage, but i think that would be a weird metaphor for it. i think derek also says something along the lines of “don’t get too attached” or something iirc. and then later in season two when meredith is thinking about her father and she asks derek if his and addison’s marriage would have turned out differently if they’d had kids. there’s a very interesting expression on his face and a weight to his words. there might be more, but those are the examples that stick in my mind. plus the fact that they both clearly want children (bc they both end up having them) and they were married for over a decade but never had any. i think there was definitely a reshuffling of their backstory when they decided kate was gonna be in more episodes and then there was another reshuffling when they decided to give her a spin off.

it’s a bummer that greys anatomy got progressively less horny over time (idk the details bc i streamed it but i assume they switched time slots at some point or something) BUT i will say there will always be something so insanely erotic about tying someone else’s scrub cap before they go into the OR. like, why don’t you just stick your tongue in their mouth while ur at it
just as they were finally about to revoke my membership card for the Certified Derek Shepherd Haters Club, i started rewatching bits of season one and two with the knowledge of what comes later and i i kind of want to rip out all his fingernails one by one
the amount of people i see saying that season eleven derek shepherd was out of character and that “they just ruined his character to build up to writing him off the show” drives me up a wall. have y’all not been paying attention? “derek would never really do that! he wouldn’t treat meredith like that!” ITS THE EXACT SAME WAY HE TREATED HIS FIRST WIFE. we were just supposed to excuse it bc addison “deserved it”.
