Everyone should take the time to read this- but especially thin allies in the body positivity movement to end fatshaming who sympathize but haven't experienced fatphobia directly. Great insight into the mindset of fat people who want to be healthy, but have bad relationships with food that have been pushed on them by society.

SORRY FOR THE VERY PERSONAL COMIC!!

This is my half of “Unhealthy”, an essay comic double header with the lovely and talented Sarah Winifred Searle. She and I both wrote about our personal experiences as overweight ladies with eating disorders, and her story is breathtaking! You can buy a physical copy of the book here: https://topatoco.com/collections/abby-howard/products/ah-unhealthy

skinny culture pisses me off so much. all of you will say the most upsetting shit ive ever seen about fat people in such a casual manner, as if its a fact. you guys will sit there and say that if you dont uphold your unrealistic skinny-ness u will be Disgusting and Awful and a Worthless Failure. and those arent even the worst ive heard

ive seen people call fatness inhuman and dirty and appalling and ive seen them say being fat makes you take up too much space and it makes u a terrible person and it fucking hurts. ive spent so long unlearning societys fatphobic ideologies and in that time i also put so much effort into learning to love myself as a fat person and seeing skinny people walk around saying shit like this and having everyone around them immediately agree is such a punch to the gut.

none of you even try to learn real facts on any of this. did you even know that calories is a measurement of how much energy something gives you, and not a measurement of how much or how little you should eat? did you even know that the 2000 calories a day thing is bullshit and harmful for every single person to follow? did you even know that fatness isnt always caused by diet?? aside from that fact that fatness is a Normal And Natural State Of Existence for some bodies (yes, really), fatness can be caused by so many things like mental health, meds, illnesses, living situations, etc. i am so so sick of people treating fatness like its some sort of evil disease that makes u worthless. even aside from those, fat people still deserve respect and kindness whether theyre healthy or not.

skinny people have it so fucking easy because they will always be praised for being skinny and they will never have to deal with the absolute heartbreaking and utterly frustrating issue of having to find clothes that fit you, are affordable, AND fit your style in the same way that fat people do. until youre brought to tears every time you just want a simple pair of shorts i dont want to hear a single word on this from you because a good amount of places wont even carry anything bigger than a large and theres tons of places that literally only sell mediums and smaller. and on top of all of that every other site u end up on has some sort of weight loss advertising

skinny people can reblog but you keep you mouth SHUT or i am blocking you. this is a post about fat issues and i dont want to hear about skinny issues on this. i understand you face valid issues too but make your own post. and i dont want comments from skinny people that are like "but i dont do this!!" or "but im not like that!!" because if thats the case then this post isnt about you

it's okay to be fat and like to eat. it's okay to be fat and enjoy cooking, baking, grilling, canning, drying or preparing foods. it's okay to be fat and work a restaurant or bakery and enjoy what you do. it's okay to be fat and not ashamed of eating in public. it's okay to be fat, but it's especially okay to be fat and have a positive relationship with food. people are supposed to enjoy eating, it's where we get our energy from, it's a very positive and nourishing experience for our bodies, it's okay if it's positive and nourishing to your mental health, too. fat people are allowed to eat, and we're allowed to enjoy doing it, too.

Shout it louder for the people at the back!

I’ve said this before on an old blog, but I’ll say it again:

If you say you’re attracted to fat people, but you don’t like fat faces, or stretch marks, or cellulite, or whatever, you’re not actually attracted to fat people. You’re asking for an omelette without eggs. You can just say you don’t like them. Nobody will be mad. You don’t have to like everything, so long as you’re not a jerk about it.

If T makes you gain weight and E and antidepressants do it too, and do does enjoying good food and not being hungry all the time, then perhaps maybe sometimes joy & weight gain come hand in hand and that's good

Fat people deserve better.

We are not repulsive. We are not vile. We are not appalling.

We are people.

If my existence "promotes obesity"? Good!

You want to know why?

I am not promoting the idea that someone should become obese. I am not going to attempt to police someone else's body and lifestyle like sizeist people do.

I am promoting the idea that people of all sizes are deserving of the bare minimum of basic human respect.

This should not be a radical idea. This should not be something we have to fight about.

99% of the time? Being fat is not a choice. And you know what? Even if it was - even if I was shoving big macs into my greasy fucking maw every 2 hours?

I would still be deserving of basic decency.

I would still be deserving of proper medical care that takes into account things other than my size and diet.

I would still be deserving of comfort, of clothing that fits.

You want to know the worst part of all of this?

Fat kids deserve better, and all too often, they don't get it.

Fat kids deserve to be able to be active without being mocked for the way their body moves.

Fat kids deserve to be seen as children rather than medical problems that need solving.

Fat kids deserve clothing that fits them and makes them feel good about themselves.

Fat kids deserve to eat, and to eat good food.

Fat kids deserve to eat cake at birthday parties like everyone else.

Fat kids deserve to go trick-or-treating like all the other kids.

Fat kids deserve love. Fat kids deserve respect.

Fat kids deserve a proper childhood without having to pay a toll of trying to change their bodies.

Fat kids deserve acceptance for their bodies as they are and as they will be - not pleasantries about how they'll grow up to be skinny, so they don't need to learn to love themselves before then.

Fat people deserve better.

i love my chub. i love how soft i'm getting. i love how good i feel now. i love how my belly isn't flat when i lay down. i love that my fingers sink into my flesh. i love that i jiggle when i walk. i love that i have to feel for my ribs and hip bones instead of them jutting from my skin. i love that my chest is softening. i love my widening chest and arms and budding love handles. i love that i take up more space. i love my growing body.

when charles schulz said "all you need is love. but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt" and anthony bourdain said "your body is not a temple, it's an amusement park. enjoy the ride" and mark twain said "part of the secret of success in life is to eat what you like." when erma bombeck said "i am not a glutton- i'm an explorer of food," voltaire said "ice-cream is exquisite. what a pity it isn't illegal" and when kurt vonnegut said "you can't just eat good food. you've got to talk about it too. and you've got to talk about it to somebody who understands that kind of food."

Fat people can be elegant and gothic and scary in a hot way and mysterious and tragically beautiful. These aesthetics aren't locked to a particular body type.

"fat and happy" is an understatement... i love food! i love being excited and joyful at the thought of eating, i love being grateful and resplendent after a good meal. i love having a soft, pudgy tummy to nourish and take care of, i love the feeling of being full and well fed! i love eating as much as i want, whenever i want and being rewarded with a soft tummy, bright eyes and full cheeks, with body that loves me and trusts me to keep it satiated and well nourished. i love rubbing my belly after a big meal and showing so much love to this thing that's working so hard just to keep me alive. i love everything about food, eating and what it does to my body. i love being fat and i love being so soft and full of love because i'm eating. loving food and loving to eat is something intimate, it's admitting to being a soft, vulnerable creature and being proud of it. to love food is to love taking care of yourself and being taken care of, it's synonymous with loving life itself
