Introducing: Community Labels
As you know, art and artists make Tumblr what it is. We want everyone on Tumblr to be able to fully express themselves while also having control over what they encounter on their dashboards. That’s why we’re introducing Community Labels, an extension to your “Content you see” settings. Our ultimate goal is to create a more open Tumblr, and this is our first step in that direction.
As a poster and reblogger, Community Labels are your way to help your followers avoid anything they’d rather not come across on their dashboards.
As a follower, setting your content preferences is a way to adjust your feed to your own comfort levels.
How does it work?
When creating new posts (or editing old posts), you’ll see controls allowing you to label your post as unsuitable for those filtering certain content types it contains.
When content is labeled, it will either be hidden, blurred, or displayed normally, based on each user’s preferences.
In your “Content you see” settings, you can now choose to show, blur, or hide content that depicts the following topics:
Drug and alcohol addiction: Contains discussions of substance abuse or addiction experience.
Violence: Contains violent or graphic content similar to what you might see in an age-restricted movie.
Sexual themes: Contains sexually suggestive subject matter, such as erotic writing or imagery.
Some examples of content that would require a community label:
Fanart of your favorite ship engaging with each other in…a very private moment
Euphoria GIFs showing Rue’s substance abuse
A movie trailer depicting graphic war scenes
A graphic 50 Shades of Grey edit
This doesn’t change our content policies: spam, hate content, and porn bots are still not welcome in the community. It’s also still important that we abide by app store rules, which means we need to make sure that mature content is only accessible to people who are old enough and have opted in to view that type of content. More information about Community Labels is available in the Help Center.
This is an opportunity to work towards a richer, more nuanced Tumblr experience while making sure everyone who enjoys using Tumblr can do so safely. That future we mentioned above? We’re already moving towards it.
I just realized that I never made a feature page for Twitter like I did with Facebook and DeviantART. So let's jump right in!
I've been thinking about this for a while now, because SOMEONE keeps complaining that I don't have a Facebook account (you know who you are >_>). I'm not trying to imply that this is a replacement somehow, but I did get positive remarks when I expressed interest in Twitter, so I thought this would be a good experiment.
So what features do we have here?
140 character posts - There are plenty of things I think of throughout the day that are WAY too short for me to post on here. Twitter would be a good way to get that out there. Besides, posting something gets it off my mind, so it's not floating around distracting me from whatever I'm doing while trying to lengthen it out to "blogpost length" (whatever that is).
Follow businesses I like - I know I've said before that I prefer to go to their site instead of reading the post on social media, but I've been looking for some sort of RSS feed to keep that all together, and this sort of fulfills that role.
#hashtag - If I start using hashtags outside of satire, please someone slap me.
Follow people - The entire purpose of social media right here. Watch my friends and family and other peeps do things. But there are two snags:
Most of my friends don't post much on Twitter. That's fine and all, but they'll get drowned out by all these other things I'm following that post every ten minutes. I'm not sure how to work around this yet, but if I don't find out anything I'll live with it.
My friends and family aren't as careful as I am about their location/identity/etc. So by looking at who I follow, people could figure out who I am and where I'm at, which renders all my attempts at privacy useless. I could up the privacy on the account, but that would protect everything, and I only want to protect some things. But I'm figuring out that if anyone wanted my information, they could find it already (despite my efforts). So it's becoming more of a moot point.
With that in mind, this is an experiment, so I'm not sure where this will go. But I think a lot of good will come out of this, so let's see what happens.
Noooooo 🥺 but I've got an entire witchy and non witchy family from group chats 😭 x please keep in touch following the decision to remove groupchats everyone! I love you all and I will continue to chat to you in whatever form and I will continue to try and roll out weekly challenges. I will try and follow everyone but it may take a while Haha x
This is devastating :(
All good things...
We love coming up with new features to make your experience on Tumblr more visceral; when they don’t work out that way, we remove them to make space for new features. Unfortunately, group chats haven’t lived up to our expectations, so we’ll be removing them from Tumblr this month.
Some of you have really leaned into group chats, discussing the merits of various sourdough proofing times, sharing your WIPs with new audiences, and exchanging complicated fan theories on the provenance of Croki.
The majority of you, however, have preferred to have these interactions elsewhere. And so, as we get ready to remove the group chat feature from Tumblr, it’s time to take these conversations to your reblog chains, your replies, and your messages. We’ll leave your chats up until September 22 at 6pm EST. After that, well, the weird will continue to be your oyster.
Hi, Tumblr. It’s Tumblr. We’re working on some things that we want to share with you.
AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.
Here are the important details:
We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner.
We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.
To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc.
Please note: If you’ve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, we’ve automatically enabled the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
If you have concerns, please read through the Help Center doc linked above and contact us via Support if you still have questions.
Have a shitty tutorial
You can finally see my terrible handwriting! This is the first thing I’ve done with my new tablet and art program. I had to switch, I guess my tablet takes to mush computing power to run Krita at the same time.
Anyway, Medibang is pretty good so far- has a lean layout with customization options, the possibility of forced fade (when you don’t have pressure sensitivity, it tapers the lines for you), and you can even folder layers! It opens with a few ads, but you just close them and it’s fine. I cannot have anything else open at the same time, though… But it’s worth it to be able to sketch digitally again.
Well it being black history month is reminding me how I wanted to doodle something like this down for a while. Since it’s been a lil detail I always take notice of in drawings. These are very simple depictions but I hope it’s enough to give the general idea! Feel free to reblog
Twitter’s API changes
Hello, Tumblr. Twitter unexpectedly announced they will end free access to the Twitter API (Application Programming Interface) on February 9th. A recent update had extended that date to today, February 13th, 2023.
What’s an API?
Put simply, APIs define how programming systems interact with one another. For example, an API allows third parties (say, a social media platform) to interact with another website programmatically (to publish posts, etc.)
How does this affect Tumblr?
We are removing the feature that links a Twitter account to your Tumblr. This will end the ability to automatically share your new posts directly from Tumblr to Twitter when they are published. This will also remove the ability to automatically display recent tweets in your blog’s theme. This change will immediately affect web, Android, and iOS.
We appreciate this will be frustrating for many users, but all is not lost—you will still be able to share any Tumblr post to Twitter manually using the normal share option on web. For Android and iOS, you will need to have the Twitter app installed to manually share Tumblr posts on Twitter. This functionality is expected for both platforms in upcoming app versions.
