Food Allergies - Tumblr Posts

I know vegan doesn't mean GF, but it does mean DF, and I'm willing to risk my celiac occasionally over my DF allergy.

Weighing out which one I care for the least that week, and just eat food containing ingredients I shouldn't be eating. Lmao.

I hate being gluten free due to Celiac diseas so much, because people constantly misunderstand in one of two ways.

Either they misunderstand it as an allergy and act like I'll have an allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis.

Or they think it's completely unimportant and "just a fad."

I dont suffer from food allergies, technical but my grass allergy got so bad that it started to read corn and wheat as grass. I couldn't eat any wheat and corn for close to a year. Thankfully I was young enough that my insurance would cover allergy shots for me. So I have gotten better and still taking allergy shots. But I do have to take a break from eating them for a time period.

My wheat "allergy" wasnt too bad. Just intense stomach pain and diarrhea problems. We thought I had celiac disease for a little bit before I went to the doctor's. Since literally half of my moms family has it.

My corn "allergy" got so bad before the shots. That I had a hard time breathing. It wasnt anaphylactic shock but was a bitch to deal with. I also have EOE ( I didnt know at the time.)Which is from what I can remember from what my doctor told me, a throat allergy. Which tends to flare up when I have a allergic reaction and asthma attacks. It cause my throat to be inflamed like someone is trying to set it on fire and have crazy bad chest pain. And I have mild chronic stomach pains(also didnt at the time till later.) And they get worse when I eat certain foods. Especially ones I'm "allergic" to. So I avoided corn at all cost.

Luckily during this time I didnt have any bad experiences with food places like the other stories above. Because I just didnt want to risk it, I had found this post a few years before my body decided to go crazy on me. And remember it while going through all this. So if I did go out to eat, I just chose the gluten free meals and just avoided the one that had corn, instead of asking for no corn with it. Because I didnt want to get some waiter/waitress like the stories above.

I'm freaking mad that I had to be so afraid of ordering my food with out certain things because of people like this. I'm lucky that I can do allergy shots, and get rid of them for 20 years. I'm grateful for that every day. But there are other people that can't, because their allergys are that bad. So people if you ever go into the food service business, please remember this post. Especially during this time of 2020, we dont need to make our lifes hard. Stay Safe -TSP

DO NOT DO THIS.

DO NOT DO THIS.

This makes me so angry.

If you work in a movie theater and you do this I have no respect for you.

My younger brother is Type 1 Diabetic.

When we go to a movie theater, we always get him diet soda. If he were to get regular when we asked for diet, we would not give him the insulin he would need for it. If that happens, his blood sugar level could go so high he could go into a coma, go blind, or even die.

If somebody gave him regular soda instead of diet without telling us, that person could be responsible for a nine-year-old being killed or blinded.

Just thinking about that makes me so angry. I get scared every time we take him to a movie in case the people working there saw this picture and decide to do the same thing.

Please signal boost this so people know.

i want to take the time to talk about a series of disabilities that no one takes seriously or even recognizes as a disability, which is food intolerances, and allergies. if a person can get sick if they eat the wrong foods, they are disabled, as this illness will make them unable to function all because they ate the wrong food. it's not okay to guilt someone for seeking foods that won't injure them.

in 2022, i began to lose my ability to digest land meats (pork, chicken, cow, etc.), animal milks, and eggs. it started slowly but quickly progressed to every type of land meat. i am only able to digest seafood, plants, nuts, seeds safely without becoming horribly sick. i tried to buy cow's milk because it is cheaper recently and became so ill it was genuinely traumatic. i have never been that sick in my life before. i cannot safely ingest cow's milk, the cheaper option, because it will injure me for several days or even weeks at a time. this happens to me with all land meats as well.

i cannot eat eggs. i cannot fried rice that has egg, i cannot eat most sauces like mayo or ranch dressing because of their high egg content. i cannot eat anything dressed in mayo as a sauce. anything that is baked or brushed or washed with egg is a risk. my digestive system really hates eggs in particular and they are inescapable.

people who can't digest or process lactose, gluten, meats, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, beans, fiber, certain fats, proteins or sugars don't have their needs considered very often, nor taken seriously, especially when that person is poor. people with digestive issues need to be able to eat foods that don't hurt us- it's not our faults that alternative milks, breads, pizzas, snacks, sauces, dips, spreads, meats and more are significantly more expensive. we still need to be able to eat foods that don't harm us regardless of how much money we make.

Even if it’s not an allergy issue, reasonable accommodation of people’s preferences is a thing! That you do! It’s polite! My buir’vod can’t have gluten and can’t do rice flour and has to watch sodium intake. I still put in the effort to track down appropriate gluten free alternatives. I recently found a recipe for cream of mushroom soup that uses coconut milk. We all loved it! My buir’vod’s ridur who puts ketchup on everything used the soup instead of ketchup on the steak and later combined it with another soup.

My buir is diabetic. I’m growing a stevia plant because you can dry and powder the leaves yourself. I carefully watch carbs on what I bring into the house. My other buir’vod had a massive heart attack a few years ago and has had to cut salt almost completely.

My vod’ad was allergic to garlic, onion, and paprika when born, as well as eggs. We adapted a family recipe for rolls and one for cookies to be eggless. Now, even though the allergy isn’t present, that recipe is what my vod’ad prefers.

Even if it’s just a preference. Accommodate. Yes it’s hard sometimes. A lot of the time. But they have to live with it, you can pull your head out of yourself long enough to track down an alternative.

hello

this is a non-friendly reminder that if someone says, “i can’t eat [food/spice/seasoning],” it’s not a challenge. if you cannot/will not accomodate that (which is fine! i, and everyone else i know with a food allergy/intolerance, have no problem bringing our own food or just waiting), then just say it. i just saw a post about how someone’s dad has an allergy to black pepper, was told for their family thanksgiving “oh yeah we won’t use it,” and now has been violently ill for multiple days bc they did it anyway thinking he wouldn’t notice.

that’s not cute.

that’s not okay.

and yes! people can be intolerant/allergic to spices and seasonings! me saying, “hey, i can’t have onion/garlic/any pepper-based spice hotter than standard paprika (and sometimes not even that)” is not an invitation to go “sure okay” and then “sneak” it in to “teach” me. i’m actually a really good cook and used to fucking LOVE spicy food. i physically cannot eat it anymore. it’s not a matter of “oh she just doesn’t know better.” it’s a matter of “eating this will put my health at risk.” like i will absolutely bring my own food. i’ve done that before. i don’t mind doing that bc i know that cooking for my needs is a pain (i have to do it all the time, after all). but saying “sure okay!” and then putting it in there anyway does absolutely nothing but set me up to be in severe pain for several days unable to keep food and water down.

people have taken me saying, “i can’t eat [food i’m intolerant to]” as me expressing a preference (which on its own should be fine anyway), when no. yeah they’re weird foods to be unable to eat. i’m aware of that. but bodies are weird as fuck. just because something is a rarer intolerance doesn’t mean that someone is faking it. i’ve seen MULTIPLE tiktoks of people “sneaking” seasoning into something when no one is looking, and that’s fine! i don’t care about jokes! but if someone hasn’t added something, check before you do bc you don’t know WHY it’s not in there.

and if you didn’t know better/never thought of that, that’s fine! but now you know!

yes, it’s annoying to have to think about someone’s dietary needs. no one knows that more than the person WITH the dietary needs. and, once again, we can bring our own food! that’s totally fine!

but don’t try to do a bait and switch when someone has said that they can’t eat something. at best, you’re making something they just don’t like. at worst, you could be setting them up for a severe reaction or illness.

Luckily I don’t have food allergies, but there are a lot of food restrictions in my immediate surroundings and family. And, it’s not that hard to accommodate them. I cut down on the salt in the main dish, and if I want more i season my individual portion at the table. There are several very tasty gluten free snacks out there, and no I’m not kidding or joking.

It’s not a personal slight, and the world does not revolve around you. Let the person with allergies and food restrictions eat food that won’t kill them or make them wish they were dead.

"pick At What You Can"? Wendy Do You Know What An Allergy Is. Do You Know What Happens If Somebody With

"pick at what you can"? wendy do you know what an allergy is. do you know what happens if somebody with an allergy eats something that's been next to something they're allergic to. are you trying to kill your guests wendy

why would you invite them to a dinner party if you don't want to feed them. ask them about their allergies when you invite them, obvs they shouldn't be surprising you with them, but dear god, what a mindset. don't tell someone you're deathly allergic to what they cooked, just sit there and don't eat it, because that's better? because they won't think you hate it? what the fuck, wendy

Please be honest with your chefs/servers about your food allergies and severity. Trust that people are decent and don’t want to cause customers pain or trips to the hospital. But food service workers are not doctors and are not paid to be or trained to be doing a health history on every single customer who asks for a menu modification. If you have an allergy or are ordering food for someone who does then it is on you the customer to be your own advocate.

Hey real quick PSA: If you have food allergies TELL RESTAURANTS. I know it’s inconvenient and sometimes people are shitty but for real, please, tell waitstaff it’s allergy specific, don’t just order it without the allergy ingredient.

This was brought up in my mind again since my step-MIL would get furious if someone presented her with a food she couldn’t eat with her Crohn’s but she’d never told them in the first place what she couldn’t have or how severe her reactions were.

When I worked at the pizza place a ton of people would order pizzas without cheese for a variety of reasons, but only occasionally would they say it was because of an allergy.

This one day a white lady came in and ordered three pizzas with no cheese. I have no explanation for why I followed up, especially because she was extremely moody and snippy. But I asked, “Is this because of an allergy?”

“Yes,” she snapped.

“If it’s for an allergy you should know we do use a small amount of cheese in the red sauce as well. Is the allergy severe?”

“What? Yes, he’ll literally die, his throat closes up and stuff.”

I stared at her. Someone she was serving pizza to would die on contact with cheese? And she didn’t even bother to tell us that?!!?? Why in gods name was she even in a pizza place???

“Don’t you have anything without cheese?” She demanded.

I ended up doing a garlic rubbed crust with toppings.

I had to scrub down all the counters and surfaces and grab fresh bins for all the toppings to try to avoid any cross contamination and the extra time made her roll her eyes in exasperation. Like I’m sorry safety protocols are inconvenient but I hope this person you’re trying to murder leaves your life.

But anyway. Please be safe. Disclose your allergies.
