"What's it gonna take to make her walk away from Zion?" Zion - gritty, wild, sometimes inhospitable, always beautiful - is a constant presence in this piece, poetically rendered by the author. It fits neatly around the characters of the courier and Joshua Graham, two deeply broken people who have until now, through force of will and the consuming act of survival in the wasteland, remained strangers to themselves...with all the pain and isolation that entails. The characters are as compellingly written as the world around them, Joshua’s faith is well represented without being overwhelming and the courier’s struggles are surprising, heartbreaking and all-too easily real - watching the two interact and evolve is moving. The timeline across chapters moves back and forth through time introducing past detail to enrich current action for maximum tension - prepare to need to shotgun this piece! The best works can say something beautiful as well as true, and this one is no exception.

I'm re-reading Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. Before, it'd been a 'rah-rah' stoicism party, "...nothing can be good for a man unless it makes him just, self-disciplined...", which really doesn't come naturally to me at all, but I admire. This time, I'm hit by the humanizing perspective that this is a lonely, isolated person struggling with suffering, unhappiness, meaning, and the question of how to live, writing to himself as he tries to figure it out. All the pain, uncertainty, frustrated desire and fear is just right there, on the page. He says to himself, "your mind remains in a state of confusion, it grows no easier to earn the title of philosopher - your station in life militates constantly against it." It makes this fall like a ton of bricks: "You may break your heart, but men will still go on as before."

This guy, this /emperor/ feels /everything/, as much as he desperately doesn't want to. (Also, can we crowd-fund the VA for Joshua Graham to read this in his voice? You know, as a treat?)

God why

I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t been drawing fallout ponies over the course of the month so why not post now while my blog is getting some traction. I love autism. Also shhhhhh I ended up changing Josh pony’s colors and patterns in between first and second drawing (burnt came first). I hope all the designs come off recognizable enough.

I didn’t want to post anymore meme redraws until I significantly improved or experimented more with styles so as not to flood people with annoying pictures 24/7, however then I ended up spending nearly 4 hours on this and I think I’m going to just drop it and leave.
