Just wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy Pride Month!
I have to deal with shit like this too, so I can fully understand what's going on, and I will say with certainty: he deserves better.

I have a transmasc friend who lives in an unsupportive environment, and I really want to help him out. He isn’t misgendered as female, but is told that nobody should have to use his preferred pronouns (He/They) because they aren’t used to them, and that ‘for good public image’, he should use They/Them only when he ‘must advertise his gender to the public’.
Obviously I’m pissed as FUCK, because this is exactly what I experienced (and still experience) as a young transmasc adult. I know firsthand how shitty it feels to be told that your identity doesn’t deserve respect or acknowledgement because ‘people aren’t used to seeing you that way’.
The main message of this post: ANYBODY who adds a note, whether liking, reblogging, or replying, will have their username written down in a notebook that I will send to him to show his family. If you reblog/reply with a supportive comment or tag, I’ll write that too under your username.

the kids online safety act passed the u.s. senate.
long story short (for anyone who hadn't heard of this before) the kids online safety act, aka kosa, is a bill that will censor online content and resources for lgbtq+ matters, reproductive healthcare, activism (INCLUDING PALESTINE AND LIKELY OTHER CRISES GOING ON LIKE IN CONGO OR SUDAN), mental health, etc. everywhere--its effects likely won't be contained to just america.
today, july 30th, 2024, the senate passed it 91-3. it has officially moved to the house of representatives.
is this a pretty massive setback? yes. do you have every right to be scared, sad, angry, or whatever else about this happening? absolutely. but should you give up hope completely? NO!
even though kosa passed the senate, the house is on break/august recess at the moment. we have around an entire month to get emails, calls, and faxes in to house reps, maybe more depending on when they decide to vote on it.
should it pass the house and get signed into law, we still have a whole 18 months before it actually goes into effect. this is plenty of time for digital rights orgs (e.g. fight for the future, the electronic frontier foundation) and other groups that oppose it to file a lawsuit against it. even if, worst-case scenario, it flies through the house immediately after the recess ends, we can still fight this up to march 2026.
so, yes, remember what's at stake here, but also remember that it's not over yet. we lost a battle, not the war.

nobody outside the uk is talking about this. why is nobody talking about it
so, today we, russian queers, may become "extremists" by decision of russian supreme court and thus our existence will be silenced and erased. any queer activism will be impossible for us. I don't know what to do anymore. I was heartbroken when they passed the laws about "gay propaganda" and transgender people, now I'm just numb. I don't want to escape. even if you cannot be bothered. even if you think it is completely pointless. because this recent trump shooting is gonna INCREASE the votes he's gonna get, and even if you believe things are completely cooked already, would you rather done what you can to stop it, or sit with the fact that you helped Trump win by inaction?
we are NOT completely cooked. no. sure, things are looking bad, but we are NOT doomed, and I cannot stress this enough.
if you cannot do it for your fellow americans, do it for the people in smaller countries with current govts pretty much worshipping Trump (coming from a Hungarian girl, currently living in a fucking autocracy, with a prime minister that worships Trump). if the us does something atrocitous, the rest of the world is much more likely to follow in its footsteps and do it too.
do it for the climate and the people literally everywhere on Earth, because another Trump presidency would fuck over the climate completely. do it for the people already dying and being displaced because of it. there is a lot of such people.
do it for the Palestinians. yeah, genocide Joe and all, but Trump would be INFINITELY WORSE.
do it for the queer people of the world. especially the trans people.

Disney+ has a “pride” collection and it’s so abysmal it’s almost funny. They don’t even have enough movies to fill a full category so they lump them in with short films. There are still only eight pieces of media in the category.
The other two categories are series (which I’ll get back to later cause boy do I have things to say) and episodes. Episodes is a really shitty category. It’s literally just episodes from random shows that have queer plot lines or characters in that one single episode. Half of them are from shows mentioned in series. I’m convinced they only added this one so the page would feel less barren, but it’s a very poor attempt.
Which brings me back to series. It’s here that it goes from funny to infuriating. There are shows on there like glee and the high school musical series which I haven’t seen and can’t really speak on, but what really caught my interest was their inclusion of gravity falls and the owl house.
Gravity falls has two characters that are revealed to be gay in the finale and I think that’s about it as far as any queer rep goes so it feels cheap to put it in a pride collection. Gravity falls is only tangentially queer, and that’s thanks to disney. Gravity falls had to fight just so that two men could say they loved each other, and they could only do it in the last episode.
But the owl house. The owl house. This is a show that disney is cancelling for “not fitting the brand,” a show the creators have had to fight just to get it as far as it has already come, and disney has the audacity to tout it in a pride collection.
Disney works against queer characters and storylines in media, yet still shows them off when it’s time for rainbow capitalism. They’re trying to pander to the queer community while also pleasing homophobes. They’re pretending they care about queer people while also silencing them.
