the idea that restrooms, locker rooms, etc need to be single-sex spaces in order for women to be safe is patriarchy's way of signalling to men & boys that society doesn't expect them to behave themselves around women. it is directly antifeminist. it would be antifeminist even if trans people did not exist. a feminist society would demand that women should be safe in all spaces even when there are men there.

i saw a video the other day detailing why we see so much about gaza🇵🇸 but not sudan🇸🇩

it comes down to these 3 key differences

while gaza is much bloodier, gaza has journalists reporting daily. as a journalist you will be targeted viciously but it's a delayed risk because the enemy isn't on ground. your enemies are cowards who plot and kill you from afar.

in sudan it's impossible to report anything because the enemy is walking down your street (if not in your house) like rabid dogs. you will be shot on sight. it's an immediate risk. there is no time to capture or comment on anything. whatever information you put out will be your first and last.

in sudan, the updates come from the warring factions filming themselves, not from civilians. and you can imagine the bias and inaccuracy of their egotistical daily vlogs and official statements.

which is why it's more imperative than ever to follow Sudanese creators and journalists who do report on the little information that does come out.

here's a post on where to get daily updates about Sudan

disclaimer: palestinian press also deal with immediate risks when confronted with IDF on-ground.

As a library worker, there’s something I want to say to you.

You do not have to apologize for the books you choose to read.

At all.  To anyone.  You owe nobody any explanations; you need no excuse or “good reason” to be reading the book.

You do not have to be ashamed for wanting to read “bad” books.  You wanna read Twilight?  We got Twilight.  Need a banal, cookie-cutter-plot mystery or thriller?  Those are always fun.  Our regulars check them out by the towering stack.  Ask Betty for recommendations; she’s read them all.  50 Shades of Oh Fucking No?  We’ve got it, we even got it in large print.  Have fun.  Check out the rest of our porn too.  Oh, and the sex manuals are a MUST if you want to “experiment” yourself.  Don’t be afraid to ask; they’re here for a reason.

Want to read a book written by a huge asshole everyone hates and agree was a monster?  Yeah, we have those.  No, we don’t think you’re an asshole for wanting to know what was actually written in there, or judging things for yourself.

You are not too old for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Babysitter’s Club, or Captain Underpants.  You are not too young for Sherlock Holmes.  There’s nothing wrong with a boy reading The Princess Academy or Sweet Valley High.  There’s nothing wrong with a girl being into The Hardy Boys or Artemis Fowl instead.

You do not have to pull the shame face and offer me an excuse when you check out your books.  I don’t care if I got so angry at that book I threw it against a wall when I read it: you have the right to read it, and enjoy it if it’s enjoyable for you.  THAT’S WHY THE LIBRARY HAS IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.  If we only stocked pure, unproblematic literature everyone approved of, by authors of unquestionable virtue, we wouldn’t have any books at all.  Or music.  Or movies.  It would be utterly fucking boring.  And it certainly wouldn’t be a library.

‘’It’s just the way it is, and maybe it’s never gonna change. But I got a mind to show my strength and I got a right to speak my mind. And I’m gonna pay for this (I’m gonna pay for this) they’re gonna burn me at the stake. But I got a fire in my veins ‘cause I wasn’t made to fall in line (I got a fire in my veins) (I am never gonna fall in line, oh).’’

‏Hello, can you please reblog or publish a post for my campaign? Due to the weakness of donations, they pass slowly as ice. I hope you can help me. A small amount like $10 will be more than useful to help me and my family. Thank you for everything💔🙏

‏Vetted Gaza Evacuation Fundrais‼️💔🍉🍉🍉

Farah is #310 on the Vetted Fundraisers List‼️

‏Right now, donated money is being used to help us survive this war. Food is very expensive and my family has to pay rent for the land that our tent is on. However, I want to save up enough money to evacuate my family to a safer place where we can rebuild our lives. I dream of returning to university to finish my computer science degree. I want to provide a better life for my family than is possible in Gaza. My family and I have many dreams we would like to fulfill after this war. We are grateful to everyone who donated and helps us during this time of suffering. Thank you for reading

The living and the dead

David Lan-Guns and Rain: Guerrillas & Spirit Mediums in Zimbabwe.

In Zimbabwe the Struggle for Zimbabwe(1966-80), hundreds of thousands of peasants provided the guerrillas with practical help and support.

But they went a good deal further. Throughout the country scores of spirit mediums, the religious leaders of the Shona, gave active support to resistance. With their participation, the scale of the war expanded into an astonishing act of collaboration between ancestors and their descendants, the past and the present, the living and the dead.

How US universities are trying to muzzle pro-Palestine protests before they begin
Middle East Eye
From issuing new hate speech guidelines to banning encampments, university administrations are hoping to quell protests without meeting stud
At The University Of Michigan On Wednesday, What Was Meant To Be A Peaceful Pro-Palestinian Die-in Quickly

At the University of Michigan on Wednesday, what was meant to be a peaceful pro-Palestinian die-in quickly turned violent after police ordered the students to disperse

[...]The immediate response by the police appeared to show a slightly different approach from the administration compared to last year, and protesters say law enforcement has become more emboldened to stamp out campus protests before they grow bigger. "We were surprised that they would commit such violence so brazenly and openly, with hundreds of new students watching, especially when it makes students feel so unsafe," the protester said. The university responded to the incident with a statement saying that it respects freedom of speech and expression but claimed the protesters were "violating university policy" by blocking traffic.

At the University of South Florida, all activities which may feature signs, tents or amplified sound now require prior approval. Likewise, at the University of California, which saw some of the most violent attacks on pro-Palestine protesters last semester, the university president ordered chancellors on all 10 campuses to ban student encampments and "overnight loitering". Using a mask to hide your identity or block walkways and university buildings is now also prohibited. According to the new directive, anyone not following the latest guidelines could face arrest. Students told MEE they perceived the policies as new layers of repression

"The university would rather focus on ways to perfect various means of both subtle and brutal repression of their students than engage and address the demands of disclosure and divestment," Mona, a student activist at UCLA, told MEE

Mona, who asked to be identified by her first name only, given the prospect of suspension and expulsion, said the policies being enacted are an attempt to bury the university's complicity in Israel's war on Gaza. "UCLA and many universities will claim to not have enough resources for a wide variety of social and health initiatives to benefit their students, but will stop at nothing to protect their role in furthering the genocide and occupation in Palestine. "There is a lot of rhetoric about the values that guide our campus, but the administration's reactions and policy implementations demonstrate that the values of equality and justice, which students are centring, are the farthest thing from their minds," Mona added.

This animation was done in collaboration with @jesilerae (on insta) who provided the audio. Jesi also gave me some creative direction for the first part and was super patient and supportive throughout the whole process! It was a healing project to work on and I'm very touched that I was contacted for this collaboration. 🦋🦋🦋 Thank you Jesi. 🙏

Some more information about the four wings of social change as taken from an article in Yes! Magazine:

//“Drawing from Grassroots Economic Organizing’s butterfly model of transformative social justice, Leah Penniman (Soul Fire Farm co-founder and farmer) described the four wings: Resisters: the people in the blockades, the protests, the work stoppages; Reformers: the folks trying to make change from within systems, including schoolteachers and elected officials, like those getting into the prosecutor’s office and working to get sentences lowered; Builders: those who create alternative institutions such as freedom schools, farms, and health clinics; and Healers: the conflict mediators, the therapists, the preachers, the singers, the dancers, the artists—“all the folks that are gonna make us well,” she said.//

To follow that, I just wanna re-iterate that YOUR contribution matters! We ALL have strengths that lift up different wings. And we all have the ability to broaden our scope and see where else we can help and see which wings may need more lifting. Your activism may look different from someone else's. That's both okay and necessary, so long as we stay connected and united. 🦋🦋🦋🍉🍉🍉✊✊✊ ~Pothos 🪴
