AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!

YES!

The Mario Movie was awesome! I enjoyed so much of the movie that talking about what I didn't like would be a much shorter post.

First off, I was disappointed Mario and Luigi's dad didn't sound like regular Mario, which could have made a better point of disappointment for him, like this guy is upset his sons are risking everything on a business that never runs out of customers! 30 people need a plumber, you can go to ten if you're good enough, and the fact Mario and Luigi are both enthusiastic about and good at plumbing means they will have plenty of business. If Papa Mario sounded like Classic Mario, it would make more sense for him to be mad/disappointed in Mario, thinking he and Luigi were making fun of him just to promote their business, when in reality they emulated their father because he is still such a confident guy despite being made fun of for the way he talks all his life.

Second, I don't like that Luigi's nickname in the movie is Lou, yes that is a typical nickname for someone named Luigi, but the game nickname of Weegie/Weeg sounds so much more personal and like a sibling came up with it, like Luigi was bugging Mario when they were kids and to retaliate Mario started calling him Weegie for a few days, only for the nickname to stick with the family and Luigi just got used to it and actually liked it eventually.

Thirdly, Toadsworth is not in the movie and that is a shame.

Finally, I know Illumination has a thing with old music, but there were to many old songs in this movie, four is too much for a video game movie, there are two scenes in the film that would make sense to have them: the training montage, and the end, but only one of them should have had an actual song in it, and I hope that someone edits the scenes with real songs so they have the music from the soundtrack that was left out of the movie so we can see how it sounds, and will most likely be better than what we got.

Exactly!

I’m always somewhat skeptical when I hear an animated movie having a celebrity cast since you’re never really going to know what you will get out of their performance, especially if they haven’t really been voice acting before. It could range from amazing to awful.

How characters are written and animated also have an effect on how the audience will like a character. There have been actors (not just voice actors) who turned out to be really good when they’re given a chance to work on a different show with different writers and such. There have also been actors who in their role you like their character but probably don’t care much for the performance of the actor and is mainly supported by what the writers and crew and do to help prop him up. I could go on some more with other different scenarios but I hope you understand what I mean.

Everything looks and sounds amazing so far! Also with what little we have heard from the actual dialogue from the main cast, I’m hoping that later on we will be shown how their performances are an amazing addition to the movie and not something we’d have to at the very least begrudgingly accept. I know there has been a lot of controversy around Chris Pratt’s casting as Mario, and given how long the movie has been in production and how long ago Pratt was announced as Mario, I think it’s too late to change the role of Mario to another actor, but you never know. I believe we have come to begrudgingly accept all this and hoped a little for at least a stellar first impression for the main lead.

Keeping in Chris Pratt’s performances in other animated roles which I enjoyed, I felt that the role of Mario, if he truly wishes to perform as him and the crew believes he is a suitable fit for him, demands more than what Pratt has done from he previous animated roles. The Mario voices I’ve heard in the dubbed trailers for different languages for the most have had a better impression on the audience on their takes for Mario in the movie (a lot of them do sound really good!)

While I’m judging based on the actors’ previous works I’m familiar with, we still haven’t really heard from Charlie Day on his take on Luigi, which whom I’m assuming will have the same accent as Mario in this movie.

And we still haven’t heard how Princess Peach with sound like. I’m afraid it’s going to be another “popular actress sounds very similar to herself while playing the girl character in the movie and doesn’t really get into character” role that I’ve seen in other movies. I know others are afraid for Mario in this movie turning out this way too with Chris Pratt.

For the other actors, I hope Toad and Bowser will continue sounding as amazing as they did in this trailer and I hope not to be disappointed, especially since we only heard a couple of lines from them.

From what I’ve heard from Mario in this movie, I’m really hoping that that is going to be the worst he will sound and that he will sound a whole lot better later on, because his first line wasn’t bad and I kind of liked it, and his second line in the trailer does sound like he’s going for a Brooklyn accent, so maybe he and Luigi will be the Italian American plumbers from Brooklyn (or as I’m guessing in this movie, New Donk City), following from what I’ve heard was their original origin story. While the little we hear of Mario unfortunately didn’t leave as grand of an impression as say the little of Bowser’s dialogue we heard in the trailer, initially hearing Mario speak in the trailer, I didn’t think it was bad! I actually kind of liked it but I am hoping for more, which hopefully will be delivered in the final version of the movie. While understanding Mario and Luigi’s characters, I need to hear more from all of the main cast before I form a more solid opinion on their voices.

I’m hoping the Mario Brothers’ voices and the other unheard character voices won’t be subpar or laughable or leaving us with yearning for more. I’m hoping the voices won’t turn out to be worst part of the movie, especially for Mario, he needs to sound amazing or at least impress even casual viewers like myself enough to actually think his take on the character is (really) good, not leave everyone feeling “yeah, whatever, fine, it’s passable, let’s get on with this.”

I really want this movie to turn out well, it looks amazing! So I’m trying to stay optimistic (despite hearing how some of the other dubs have handled their casting choices, I wish I could also watch those movies and understand what they’re saying) and hoping for the best. Right now everything looks amazing aside from the maybe less than ideal cast. It was probably not their best first foot forward. Hopefully that will change soon. I’m really hoping I will get to really liking all the other cast members’ voices soon!

If you’re angry about Chris Pratt replacing Charles Martinet.

But not angry about Anya Taylor-Joy replacing Jen Taylor and Samantha Kelly.

And not angry about Jack Black replacing Kenneth W. James.

And not angry about Keegan-Michael Key replacing Samantha Kelly.

Don’t pretend it has anything to do with the original voice actors not getting hired for the movie. Just be honest and say it’s because you don’t like Chris Pratt. You’re allowed to not like certain actors.

And sure, there are things to not like about Pratt.

Welp…saw the Mario trailer recently. And it’s a lot better than I expected it to be. And while I can see why some may be bothered by Chris Pratt’s voice so far, I’m…really not that bothered? A few friends of mine pointed out while Pratt didn’t really sound like the Mario we know from his game series, he did sound a bit like Mario from the 80′s cartoons. And if that’s what Pratt was aiming for, good for him there. It’s not the Mario we are used to, but it’s still a Mario we know. I know some of us are a bit upset at the voice, but try and look at it differently; maybe Pratt’s Mario will later get an accent in the movie as a side effect from being in the Mushroom Kingdom (it did look like he came from another world after all). You don’t have to like my opinion or agree with me on it, but it’s just a bit of food for thought.

mystified by the argument that videogame!Mario's voice speaking full sentences would apparently be "grating" to listen to for the length of a feature film, as if [A]: a voiced Mario game lasts less than an hour to avoid upsetting people's sensibilities, and [2]: Charles Martinet is only capable of doing one silly "WAHOO" voice

besides the quadrant of Mario, the man's the voice of Paarthurnax, the narrator for two of the Bit.Trip Runner games, Gimli in a LotR RPG, and a long history of other video-game, TV and movie bits besides that, and people don't trust that he'd be able to do a full movie? Even sticking to the instruction-booklet story that came with Super Mario Bros, the whole "Brooklyn native ends up in a strange new world" thing isn't difficult to work with - he'd be able to give Mario a more subdued voice, but still decently recognisable as the Mario voice that many are familiar with

I'm not wont to be mean for its own sake, and I'm a full year late on this cause I wasn't on tumblr for a while, but with the trailer out for real now, Chris Pratt is definitely miscast as Mario. Him phoning it in as "Chris Pratt but with a mild accent" compared to Jack Black's Bowser or Keegan-Michael Key's Toad is disappointing, and whilst I know none of what I say will have any real impact on the movie, I definitely feel like it deserved better casting in that regard.

I'm gonna be honest here:

The Mario movie actually looks really nice. Despite Illumination being known for the somewhat cheap animation it's got (which isn't necessarily bad mind you) you can tell that the studio actually put a lot of effort into the movie just from the trailer alone. You can see the difference in their budget and the passion that the animators have in just the two minutes alone like I was shocked.

The VAing is surprisingly good! Jack Black as Bowser threw me for a loop because I didn't even recognize him! It was only after he'd did the little chuckle and said:

"I do not."

That I caught his voice and realized that it was him. He's done an incredible job with the character and I can't wait to see him in the movie!!!

Chris Pratt on the other hand......

Look I don't know the actor very well other than he's in the Marvel and Jurassic World trilogy but as soon as I heard him talk and say:

"What is this place?"

I couldn't help but feel like he just.....didn't care about his role. It felt like it wasn't Mario at all. Even my mom who's not a fan of video games and only knows the basics of them due to me and my siblings talking to her about, had said that he just wasn't Mario and the voice didn't fit the character. (She also said the same thing when the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer was released and she saw his first design before it was fixed. She literally took one look and said "That's not Sonic.")

Like that says a lot.

Personally I think if Chris Pratt wants to make this work he'd actually have to put a little bit of effort into his role. Or else it just won't really work. That or the studio and Nintendo get a new VA who's more excited to voice Mario.

But other than the voice for our favorite red Italian plumber I gotta say that everything else looks and sounds really good!!! The scenery is phenomenal and stunning and colorful just like the video games and the character's designs look so good and well done!! Honestly kinda excited to see what the movies like when it comes out next year!!! (They better not massacre my boys because like Sonic they deserve some respect as well).

Anyways those are my personal thoughts.

Luigi ‘HE ASKED FOR NO MUSHROOMS’ Mario

Hey, I have a question. Is there any more depth to your headcanon about Mario being selectively (?) mute? Just curious.

hey anon idk if you wanted me to explain why I headcanoned Mario being selectively mute or if you just wanted more headcanons so I just explained my reasoning for this HC maybe i’ll do more HC’s later when i’m off work sorry if i misunderstood your sentence i’m kind of stupid and i struggle with comprehending sentences sometimes 😭😭

Okay so for me personally there’s just a lot of in game evidence for mario canonically having selective mutism for starters the only time we hear him full talk is whenever he’s alone with Luigi (Bowser’s Inside Story, and if i remember correctly he doesn’t actually speak again when Starlow joins the team only his signature grunts and hmmm) or when he’s by himself (Mario 64 Start Screen). In any other game he’s in if he’s not alone with Luigi or by himself he never talks, in Paper Mario he’s the only character that doesn’t have a text box and in any of the 3D platforming games (most notably Bowser’s Fury and Super Mario Galaxy) his only responses are grunts and even then those are limited (and primarily when he’s by himself).

That’s game!Mario though, Movie!Mario and Show!Mario are two complete different characters in my head (although I still enjoy show!mario whilst movie!mario is…..i don’t wanna talk about it #notmymario) so anybody who disagrees with me is completely fine i don’t really care it’s more of a personal HC for me then anything else (even if there is some in game knowledge with it but again it’s just the silent protag trope)

IDK just as someone who used to have selective mutism and also has autism (I hc’d Mario to have autism as well but autism and mutism aren’t always linked to together so it’s sort of unrelated) it just brings me a lot of comfort since this guy is like so beloved by people in game and out of game and it’s like oh wow I can almost pretend ableism just does not exist!

Anyway yeah hopefully this explains some stuff!! I’m not really good with expanding my thoughts and talking with them so if you need me to go further in detail pls don’t be afraid to send a message i genuinely struggle with these kinds of stuff 😭😭😭😭

I've been playing Fortune Street for the past few days, and it's certainly interesting at points. For example, Mario kinda-sorta went to Hell before he died.

Mario is an A-rank CPU (on a scale from D to S). He got trapped on an island completely dominated by Yoshi and landed on a property worth over 2,300 G. He had to sell all of his shops just to stay in the game.

The number on the left is your in-hand cash, while the one on the right is your net worth. I am approaching 9,000 in net worth here; Mario is below 500. You start with 1,500 on this board.

Yoshi taught us a powerful lesson today. Skill takes you far, but luck and misfortune do not discriminate.

Otherwise you would have the big puppy eyes but not very well rendered and so out of place, lol.
