The Glass Scientists sketches I did in 2022 >>>

I love this comic and its inspirational material, a highly misunderstood novel that most people haven’t read. Still, everyone thinks that they know the story without the need to read the book.

Of course, I’m talking about „The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde“ (because only one-half got a doctorate)

Please read the novel! Or read the comic instead!

It’s on Hiveworks!

theglassscientists.com
A gaslamp fantasy comic about the life and times of a ragtag group of mad scientists and their enigmatic leader, Dr. Henry Jekyll.

(Because I don’t spoil)

Correct me if I’m wrong but in the original text doesn’t Jekyll admit to always knowing exactly what Hyde was doing just not wanting to stop it? Also, that when he woke up as Hyde he was completely aware of being Hyde and had the wherewithal to run back to the apartment he had bought to “house Hyde?”  And I know that he was into shady shit prior and the main motivation for creating Hyde was so he wouldn’t feel any guilt over that shady shit. So if I’m right on the first point, combine that with the shady guilt stuff, I find it fascinating that in many adaptions of Jekyll and Hyde and in the public eye, Jekyll is seen as good if not misguided and Hyde as a truly separate and evil person. When in reality Hyde never really existed, was just a disguise, and Jekyll should be considered a truly horrendous person. The true monster of the story who eventually took his own life instead of facing the consequences of his own actions. I’m sure there are entire papers on this and better ways of pointing this out but it’s been bothering me so I thought I’d share my thoughts.

Still on this, didn’t get all of it out. Anyway, I completely understand the appeal of a tortured soul struggling with their inner demons. But Jekyll doesn’t come off as that to me. He’s a dodger. He blames everything but himself. He’s not a bad man, it’s society and temptation. It’s not me! It’s Hyde! I will acknowledge it’s been a minute since I read the book and maybe I need to do that again but this is how I’m remembering the character and the narrative at the moment.

Honestly if anyone wants to get into a literary discussion about Jekyll and Hyde I am here for it.

No, no! I asked for interaction :D So it really was all on Jekyll. Besides physical appearances, there was never truly a Mr Hyde. It was the wretched doctor the whole time. This again brings me back to how modern adaptions stray from the novel. (I love some adaptions but here I’m addressing contradictions from the source material.) To get a bit poetic, do people prefer the tortured lie over the harsh selfish truth? Does making Jekyll out as a victim of himself instead of the perpetrator of evil reflect on how many prefer to see themselves? On a lighter note than that though, I wonder how a more true adaption would play out? Oh! I know gritty adaptions are a little outdated at this point but seeing as any adaption of this book has to be gritty, it’d be fantastic to see it turned into a murder show with Jekyll being hunted and slowly forced by outside forces to acknowledge that he is more Hyde than he wants to admit.

The Arcana devs: Can I copy your homework?

The Glass Scientists artists: Yeah, just change it up a bit so it doesn’t look obvious you copied

And they'd be fighting Mr. Hydes? Just like an entire other secret society of Mr. Hydes that run the insurance department at the hospital or something and have their own book but it's rare except as a pirated pdf or some shit like that.

Okay, so we all know the real reason for the vampires-versus-werewolves thing in popular culture is because back in the 1930s, the same studio owned the movie rights to Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman, and they decided to moosh them all together into what is arguably the first Big Stupid Cinematic Universe, but what's slightly less well known is that H G Wells' The Invisible Man was also part of that package. I want to see what the goofy we-swear-it's-personal-horror tabletop RPG based on that facet of the mythos looks like, weirdly artificial taxonomies of playable splats and all – everybody's invisible, but there are like five completely different possible reasons for that, plus a sixth, evil reason for being invisible which you're not allowed to play as because they secretly rule the world.

Something Funny I Did For A Project I Am Working On With The Movie Version Of The Pagemaster! (From What

Something funny i did for a project i am working on with the movie version of the Pagemaster! (From what I’ve seen from the PC Game, they changed his greenish skin tone to a very pale tone... for some reason. Just glad they gave him some more dialogue!)

:)

It is strangely difficult to get Jekyll’s mouth right and Hyde’s face shape right... for some reason... It took me nearly a whole day + to get this done...

need more practice.

Seasonally appropriate thoughts

We don't talk enough(probably cause it's a random ass heck topic) about how much better Jekyll is compared to Frankenstein

Like Dr. Frankenstein is THE mad scientist, but he's not even an actual doctor

Whereas not Dr. Jekyll is

Then there's the whole mad part. Is "Dr." Frankenstein really mad? We know Dr. Jekyll has a bunch of impulsivity, intrusive thoughts, and urges he feels guilty over, and when he becomes Hyde and longer needs to feel that guilty he fucking kills a guy

He beats him to death with his cane

And it should be mentioned near the end of story Jekyll/Hyde kills himself

(side note, but unlike literally every adaption, in the original story Jekyll and Hyde are the same person. Jekyll is Hyde, Hyde is Jekyll. Jekyll is Jekyll as a nice and respectable member of society. Hyde is Jekyll without inhibition)

So what is is exactly that makes Dr. Frankenstein a better mad scientist? What is it? I want to know, because from where I'm standing only one of which is an actual doctor, and seems way more mentally unstable

Oh I Was Talking About The Original Book Like Before You Discover They Are He Same Person I Kinda Assumed

Like this was so funny to me! 😂

Was it just me or was @grahamcrackers4hanni and I the only ones to think Jekyll and Hyde were definitely sleeping together. One of the scientists in “The Glass Scientists” literally said “ I bet they’re sleeping together.” Like ???? You can’t convince me otherwise, bro I will fight you if you try.

While I haven't read the novel myself, I remember reading that the original Mr. Hyde was actually closer to the Garwolf, in that Jekyll deliberately transforms into Hyde in order to act out his immoral impulses without fear of consequences, rather than it being purely involuntary like it is in many later tellings.

Who's your favorite of the classic universal monsters and why? (based solely on their portrayals in the universal movies, sequels and crossovers included, not their original book counterparts.)

The Wolf Man, because the character was both written and performed so well that he basically redefined what werewolves are in Western culture. None of the other Universal monsters can claim that impact, and since they never recast him, he also remains the most consistently well characterized and acted monster from film to film. Dracula and Frankenstein got their characters shaved down in sequel after sequel, but Lon Chaney Jr. made sure Larry Talbot was never less than his best.
