So I'm rewatching twilight again and Carlisle Cullen and Charlie Swan are so Jekyll and Utterson in a different universe. They even look like the mazm Jekyll and Utterson??
Respected doctor, loves his friends despite having to isolate himself sometimes due to keeping huge secret (is some kind of "monster"), like 90% in control (of becoming Hyde/making others vampires) but very calm about it because he believes he is fully in control
Knows practically nothing that's going on but is trying to find out how to protect his loved ones. Detectives (one paid, one self-proclaimed). Quite emotionally restricted (if that makes sense), cares a lot but struggles to show it over than in emergency situations
Just joined the Jekyll and Hyde fandom and one of my favorite songs I've been listening to on loop this month fits Jekyll so well
It's another will wood song - 2econd 2ight 2eer (that was fun, goodbye!)
And it's just so Jekyll coded!! I was listening to it a few days ago and it just clicked that almost every line was pure Jekyll (at least in my obsessed mindset)

Just finished "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". Right after that suddenly realised, that during all the time while I was reading, my brain unexpectedly decided to come up with appearance for main characters.
I proudly present to your attention — Dr Jekyll looking like Avraam Lincoln and Mr Hyde like Joxter from Moomins.
I have just one question to my brain: WHY
HOT TAKE ON THE JEKYLL AND HYDE MUSICAL THAT MAKES NO SENSE-
Jekyll and Hyde the musical is amazing to me- it has amazing songs, good singers (Lucy and Jekyll wink wink) and it tells the story nicely from a different POV than the book with their own little adaptations
But I see people hating on the romance part of it- it's not in the book and I get why people would think it's bad, almost like it's forced bc "Oh, a piece of media unrelated to anything like love?? Lets romancise it."
I don't think it's that and here's why lol Him being shown loving Lisa is actually a really smart decision because in the book, he's barely even shown having feelings other than "SCIENCE!!" and "depression… pain… suffering.."
It makes him more humane. In the book, he has no family, no lover. I think it can be a bit distant sometimes, despite me still adoring his character either way. (I mean, I don't have anything against the book. His motives are shown perfectly in it and the book was meant to show him through the suffering he caused himself- or at least that's how I saw it)
But it still really helps visualise his character outside of science and it helps show how much he becomes obsessed over his work
And then Lucy my literal queen-
Hyde obsesses over her in an animalistic manner (literally the way he growls in Alive shows that) and I think this helps show how purely "evil" he is.
He has a "relationship" with her, and is in actual love turned to an unhealthy thing, but he also toys with her (It's a dangerous game shows it (or at least it's how I saw it..)) and I think
It also technically shows him experimenting with his own feelings- Jekyll was never free to be himself and Hyde wasn't created long ago. Him experimenting with his happiness and how he views things, him wanting to kill Lucy shows he wants to see if it's bring him joy as a test to himself in a fucked up way. Another way I see it is that, well, if he experiments with how alive he feels- how happy he is- then he should also experiment on what gives him pain.
Anyways ignore this- it's horrible and makes no sense lol but yeah they're important in my heart guys....
I've only been in the Jekyll and Hyde fandom for a few months, but one thing I've noticed is that most of the people I've seen who dislike/hate the book often say that it's because "It had an amazing idea, but it's executed terribly," or something along those lines. And while I think it's totally okay for someone to hate/dislike any book or media for any reason or no reason at all, I never really understood what they meant by this because I personally think it was executed amazingly. I think it might be because of people just misunderstanding what the idea is, but I could be wrong. I'd love to read why people think the book was poorly executed, maybe I'd add in my thoughts to that as well

I need to get this out of my chest, so here we go:
If you don't make Henry Jekyll a flawed character when adapting the novella, then you're setting up yourself to failure. Specifically, because you're failing to translate the themes of the novella.
You can't talk about the duality of humanity and the struggle that arises from that if Jekyll doesn't embody those

Me when my friend casually said "They'll never separate Jekyll from Hyde, he was right. When you talk about them, you always say "Jekyll and Hyde", it's never only Jekyll or only Hyde. No one knows who they are if you don't say them together, they're nobody without each other" and I. Why would you say that to me.
Jekyll is doomed to always be known as/for the thing he regrettably created. He won't be known for his great science, but for his tragic tale. And Hyde is doomed to never be his own person, but an extension of Jekyll. As Jekyll's regrettable creation. Jekyll will never know peace in his afterlife, never be redeemed for his sins. Hyde will forever haunt him. He tried so desperately to disconnect himself from Hyde's identity, enough to kill himself, and yet years of literature + many adaptations later, he cannot escape Hyde. Cannot escape himself. And Hyde cannot break his bond with Jekyll, he's always going to have to return to that docile state. He says that he's free as Hyde, but what kind of freedom is that. They're stuck together. Forever.
Guys what if I started sobbing at Jekyll and his evilsona gone wrong. What would happen. "They're nobody without each other" you have to be kidding me. They're. hhrhrhg. Doomed by the narrative. I'm so sorry babygirls. Babygirl.
one of my favourite lines in jekyll and hyde is when they mention that he wrote blasphemies all over a book he said he liked. because, like.....WHY! it might just be me being stupid but I always interpreted hyde as being jekylls unseemly urges. like, stuff he wishes he could do but can't because he's a gentleman or whatever. so what's the deal with that book??
did jekyll like that book? did he just tell people he did? why???? does hyde have a differing opinion of the book or does he also like the book and just did it to fuck with himself??????????? or do they both hate the book???????????????????

Jekyll and Hyde isn’t about split personality it’s about addiction, shame and the downfall it could lead on a person’s life! Movies and media has gone so far off of the actual book the true point is completely missed! Read the book and see for yourself!
