thoughts from an extra ordinary suburb

they told me that re-entry shock was a thing, and i brushed it off. me? i was ready to return home, see my family for the first time in four months, step on american soil, eat a good burger. i knew exactly what i wanted to do.

and now, i sit here, changed and unchanged. i am back in “my world.” i take classes that i hate and work a job that bores me. i escape into the fictional worlds of video games and books. i live inside a screen. i see the same faces and hear the same things and everything is all the same color and hue. how extra ordinary.

and then there are the moments. i’ll be sitting here, reading a story for my fiction writing workshop and i’ll see burma at five in the morning when the sky is the color of molasses with no light pollution, or tokyo on a rainy afternoon, or the busy streets of beijing. i’m back in barcelona buying sunglasses, or cape town, standing at the top of table mountain, laughing with my roommate who had spent the entire hike vomiting up last night’s party. i see india in all its life and wonder if it ever gets grey there--the red soil, warm skin, the impossibly bright smiles. i see the ocean and feel it rock me to sleep and wonder how in the world i got that opportunity, how i can manage to stay here, restless but sedentary and not traveling, seeing new things, meeting new people, feeling full and wondrous and happy.

they told me that re-entry shock was a thing, and i didn’t believe them until i was homesick for the world.

i just think that the double standard with how everyone (and i'm not just talking ab the west btw) has treated the ukraine invasion vs issues literally anywhere else. and no i'm not just talking about the straight up racist journalists (although that was also . whew ! shocked but not surprised) but rather how it seems that this time around, everyone seems to understand that you can't 'separate business / art from politics'. remember when a muslim soccer player spoke up against the atrocities that the chinese government perpetuates against the uyghur muslims and then arsenal terminated his contract because they are 'apolitical as an organization'? and yet manchester united players standing up for ukraine have been applauded for it. remember when iceland held up the palestine flag during eurovision as a show of solidarity and they were fined 5000 euros for it? and yet russia is banned from this year's contest.

and i know white people are going to misunderstand this on purpose, so i'm just stating this upfront: i completely support ukraine, and i think it's important that russia is shown, on a world platform, that they cannot get away with the invasion of a sovereign state. but the fact that suddenly, mixing politics with sport, business and art has become the new normal and socially acceptable because it's europe and the west and not filthy violent brown people is just too ironic for me to not point out. and btw if anyone starts talking about the 'oppression olympics' or wtv to discredit the very real differences between the treatment of white & brown people on a global level and the dehumanization of asians i will smash your head into a brick wall.

Fundraiser Pins | 🇵🇸🇨🇩🇸🇩🇾🇪🇲🇲🇺🇦

A little something different from what I usually post on here, but thought I should share so it can reach people across other corners of the Internet :)

I co-run an Etsy shop with my sister, and we have a whole section dedicated to Fundraiser pin badges - where all profits made (minus a tiny manufacturing fee) go towards a charity. So far, we have managed to raise small amounts over the last few months, which have contributed to several different causes. See below:

All profit generated from pin badges 1. and 2. goes towards the PCRF, a charity providing medical supplies and treatment, food and clean water to affected children in Gaza during the current genocide. All profit generated from pin badge 3. goes towards a family in need. See who we’re currently supporting ->
Deema (24), her husband Mahmoud (32), and her two daughters Sham (4) and Rita (2) managed to evacuate to Egypt in April, but are still in need of help to rebuild their lives, and pay for Rita’s treatment for her seizures.

Rita suffered from seizures since birth, but since being forced into terrifying conditions without proper medical care available, they worsened. Both her and Sham are in need of support therapy due to being traumatised by their experiences, and the whole family needs help to get back on their feet in Egypt.
All profit* generated from the Congo Flag Badge goes towards the Free The Slaves organisation, a charity aiming to end slavery in Congo, as well as providing legal assistance and launching research projects to help inform what is impacting slavery. The DR Congo is one of the many places in which modern day slavery is taking place at extortionate rates, funded by the West’s demands for certain minerals used in manufacturing.
All profit* generated from the Sudan Flag Badge goes towards Save The Children: Sudan, who are providing support via food, education, healthcare and positive activities to the children who have been affected by the recent conflicts in Sudan.
The two rival factions, the SAF and the RSF, have caused a great many civilian deaths and casualties, millions of people to be displaced and people subject to war crimes, food shortages and lack of healthcare.
All profit* generated from the Yemen Flag Badge goes towards Yemen Relief. They provide provides food and humanitarian aid to the people of Yemen, who are currently in the midst of a civil war.
The United Nations estimates that 80% of people in Yemen are living below the international poverty line, whilst prices of food and fuel continue to rise. The last decade of war has also caused millions to be displaced and forced into worsening living conditions.
All profit* generated from the Tigray Flag Badge goes towards Omna Tigray, who are providing financial, legal and humanitarian assistance to refugees and those affected by the genocide in Tigray.
The genocide committed against Tigray by Ethiopia during 2020-22 was an attempt at ethnic cleansing, as there is evidence that they committed several heinous war crimes against Tigrayans during the conflict.
All profit* generated from the Myanmar Flag Badge goes towards the World Food Programme: Myanmar, who are providing food and humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar in response to both ongoing conflicts and the climate crisis.
Myanmar, as one of the most climate-vulnerable places in the world, is constantly subject to floods, landslides, drought and other severely dangerous and impactful natural hazards.
All profit* generated from the Ukraine Flag Badge goes towards the British Red Cross: Ukraine, a charity providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Ukraine who are currently being affected by the current conflict with Russia.
During this conflict, over ten million people have been displaced, and are in desperate need of access to food, water, shelter and medical care.
All profit* generated from the Ceasefire Badge goes towards the charity that you select when purchasing. The options currently listed are: The PCRF [Palestine], Omna Tigray [Tigray], Save The Children [Sudan], The British Red Cross [Ukraine], The World Food Programme [Myanmar] and Yemen Relief [Yemen].

Thanks so much for reading, I really appreciate it! :) It would be super awesome if you could do the cool tumblr thing and reblog this so that it can reach as many people as possible, so that together we can raise funds to support those who need them! ✨

The Tribes of Kumandra

In Raya And The Last Dragon, the film is set in a fictional fantasy land called Kumandra, inspired by Southeast Asian cultures from Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, and the Philippines. The production team traveled to the aforementioned countries in order to gain inspiration and portray these diverse nations respectfully through attention to detail in the design aesthetics of the characters, costumes, architecture, and landscapes.
