cool. Just rip my heart out of my chest, why don’t you.

On the day before Ren leaves for his hometown, if you go to Kichijoji with Akechi’s Confidant completely maxed (Rank 10, remembering your promise to him, ext), you can talk to the jazz bar owner, Munabe, and he will ask about Akechi’s whereabouts. Munabe says that he hasn’t seen the young detective in a while and questions why Ren doesn’t know what happened to Akechi, despite appearing to have been close: “Aren’t you good friends?” To this assumption, you can reply with either “…I don’t know” or “No.”

At first, I felt unsatisfied with the inability to make a positive response. In the “Proof of Justice” OVA, Ren came to the conclusion that he and Akechi were friends in the end. Why not here too?

Then I quickly realized… the first option is very appropriate. Ren really wouldn’t know how he feels about Akechi yet.

They didn’t simply end as friends, partners, or even rivals in Royal. Something else happened - something which the blatant lyrics of “Our Light” suggest may have been a night of raw passion before the final battle with Maruki. It would make sense that they didn’t get enough time to totally comprehend what was happening between them. Sure, they possibly had sex that night, but I imagine that it was fueled by pure desperation rather than soft, melancholic love towards one another. It was (in their minds) their last night together and all of the premature emotions that had been bottled up and were bubbling inside probably just burst. It’s a lot to process for both boys. Hence, Ren’s hesitant “I don’t know” is perfectly understandable.

Immediately after the answer, Ren finds something in his pocket: it’s Akechi’s glove - a symbol of hope. And after promising to pass on Munabe’s message to Akechi, Ren wonders if they will ever be able to fulfill their promise made on that night.

Edit: I just realized that I’ve been misreading the bar owner’s name this entire time. It’s MuHEN, not Munabe. orz

The context for this conversation is: Holmes has had no work from Scotland Yard due to rumors about his and Watson's relationship. He responded to this with excessive cocaine use and then working himself unhealthy on the one case that came along; Mary Morstan's. Meanwhile, Watson befriended Mary, who is also gay, and realized that a lavender marriage with her could make him and Holmes safe, as well as granting her more freedom. Watson has not yet told Holmes of his decision.

(This is part of the Watsons sketchbook series!)

canon scene under the cut, which is achingly poignant in its own right:

“Well, and there is the end of our little drama,” I remarked, after we had set some time smoking in silence. “I fear that it may be the last investigation in which I shall have the chance of studying your methods. Miss Morstan has done me the honour to accept me as a husband in prospective.”

He gave a most dismal groan. “I feared as much,” said he. “I really cannot congratulate you.”

I was a little hurt. “Have you any reason to be dissatisfied with my choice?” I asked.

“Not at all. I think she is one of the most charming young ladies I ever met, and might have been most useful in such work as we have been doing. She had a decided genius that way: witness the way in which she preserved that Agra plan from all the other papers of her father. But love is an emotional thing, and whatever is emotional is opposed to that true cold reason which I place above all things. I should never marry myself, lest I bias my judgment.”

“I trust,” said I, laughing, “that my judgment may survive the ordeal. But you look weary.”

“Yes, the reaction is already upon me. I shall be as limp as a rag for a week.”

“Strange,” said I, “how terms of what in another man I should call laziness alternate with your fits of splendid energy and vigour.”

“Yes,” he answered, “there are in me the makings of a very fine loafer and also of a pretty spry sort of fellow. I often think of those lines of old Goethe,—

Schade dass die Natur nur einen Mensch aus Dir schuf, Denn zum würdigen Mann war und zum Schelmen der Stoff.

“By the way, à propos of this Norwood business, you see that they had, as I surmised, a confederate in the house, who could be none other than Lal Rao, the butler: so Jones actually has the undivided honour of having caught one fish in his great haul.”

“The division seems rather unfair,” I remarked. “You have done all the work in this business. I get a wife out of it, Jones gets the credit, pray what remains for you?”

“For me,” said Sherlock Holmes, “there still remains the cocaine-bottle.” And he stretched his long white hand up for it.

don’t think about carth sending messages across the galaxy when revan just up and vanishes. don’t think about desperate holorecordings that become more and more resigned as time passes until he stops and settles in to wait. don’t think of him going out to a cantina and being flirted with only to have him stop the person apologetically with a ‘sorry, but i’m spoken for’ even years after she’s left.
