Quirks/Habits Your Whumpee May Develop As a Result Of Trauma

Warning: Minor self harm.

Biting their nails/skin

Chewing the inside of their cheek

Saying 'no' to all new things

Repetitively running their hand up and down their arm/outer thigh

Gritting/grinding their teeth

Running their fingers through their hair

Zoning out during conversations

Getting defensive over minor things

Shutting down when things get too much

Sleeping to avoid stressful situations

Never making eye contact

Going non-verbal

Apologising far too much

Eating too much/not enough

Talking to themselves

Scratching their skin

Biting their lip

Shying away when people make sudden movements

HOW TO WRITE A CHARACTER WHO IS IN PAIN

first thing you might want to consider: is the pain mental or physical?

if it’s physical, what type of pain is it causing? — sharp pain, white-hot pain, acute pain, dull ache, throbbing pain, chronic pain, neuropathic pain (typically caused by nerve damage), etc

if it’s mental, what is the reason your character is in pain? — grief, heartbreak, betrayal, anger, hopelessness, fear and anxiety, etc

because your character will react differently to different types of pain

PHYSICAL PAIN

sharp and white-hot pain may cause a character to grit their teeth, scream, moan, twist their body. their skin may appear pale, eyes red-rimmed and sunken with layers of sweat covering their forehead. they may have tears in their eyes (and the tears may feel hot), but they don’t necessarily have to always be crying.

acute pain may be similar to sharp and white-hot pain; acute pain is sudden and urgent and often comes without a warning, so your character may experience a hitched breathing where they suddenly stop what they’re doing and clench their hand at the spot where it hurts with widened eyes and open mouth (like they’re gasping for air).

dull ache and throbbing pain can result in your character wanting to lay down and close their eyes. if it’s a headache, they may ask for the lights to be turned off and they may be less responsive, in the sense that they’d rather not engage in any activity or conversation and they’d rather be left alone. they may make a soft whimper from their throat from time to time, depends on their personality (if they don’t mind others seeing their discomfort, they may whimper. but if your character doesn’t like anyone seeing them in a not-so-strong state, chances are they won’t make any sound, they might even pretend like they’re fine by continuing with their normal routine, and they may or may not end up throwing up or fainting).

if your character experience chronic pain, their pain will not go away (unlike any other illnesses or injuries where the pain stops after the person is healed) so they can feel all these types of sharp pain shooting through their body. there can also be soreness and stiffness around some specific spots, and it will affect their life. so your character will be lucky if they have caretakers in their life. but are they stubborn? do they accept help from others or do they like to pretend like they’re fine in front of everybody until their body can’t take it anymore and so they can no longer pretend?

neuropathic pain or nerve pain will have your character feeling these senses of burning, shooting and stabbing sensation, and the pain can come very suddenly and without any warning — think of it as an electric shock that causes through your character’s body all of a sudden. your character may yelp or gasp in shock, how they react may vary depends on the severity of the pain and how long it lasts.

EMOTIONAL PAIN

grief can make your character shut themself off from their friends and the world in general. or they can also lash out at anyone who tries to comfort them. (five states of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and eventual acceptance.)

heartbreak — your character might want to lock themself in a room, anywhere where they are unseen. or they may want to pretend that everything’s fine, that they’re not hurt. until they break down.

betrayal can leave a character with confusion, the feelings of ‘what went wrong?’, so it’s understandable if your character blames themself at first, that maybe it’s their fault because they’ve somehow done something wrong somewhere that caused the other character to betray them. what comes after confusion may be anger. your character can be angry at the person who betrayed them and at themself, after they think they’ve done something wrong that resulted in them being betrayed, they may also be angry at themself next for ‘falling’ for the lies and for ‘being fooled’. so yes, betrayal can leave your character with the hatred that’s directed towards the character who betrayed them and themself. whether or not your character can ‘move on and forgive’ is up to you.

there are several ways a character can react to anger; they can simply lash out, break things, scream and yell, or they can also go complete silent. no shouting, no thrashing the place. they can sit alone in silence and they may cry. anger does make people cry. it mostly won’t be anything like ‘ugly sobbing’ but your character’s eyes can be bloodshot, red-rimmed and there will be tears, only that there won’t be any sobbing in most cases.

hopelessness can be a very valid reason for it, if you want your character to do something reckless or stupid. most people will do anything if they’re desperate enough. so if you want your character to run into a burning building, jump in front of a bullet, or confess their love to their archenemy in front of all their friends, hopelessness is always a valid reason. there’s no ‘out of character’ if they are hopeless and are desperate enough.

fear and anxiety. your character may be trembling, their hands may be shaky. they may lose their appetite. they may be sweaty and/or bouncing their feet. they may have a panic attack if it’s severe enough.

and I think that’s it for now! feel free to add anything I may have forgotten to mention here!

Rage as Whump

Pain, fear, sadness - these are at the core of whump, but anger holds an equally important place. I don't just mean defiance towards whumper as an aspect of the narrative, I mean rage itself as a source of suffering.

Whumpee is shaking/screaming/sobbing with rage but unable to lash out at their target.

Whumpee has gone through years of resentment alone while the person who wronged them walks free, loved by everyone.

Whumpee being forced to act perfectly calm and content while socializing with the person they hate most.

Whumpee blacking out from rage.

Whumpee hysterical from rage.

Whumpee is capable of going berserk (either through supernatural powers or through just normal human force of will) and lashing out recklessly in a way that destroys their own body.

Whumpee risking their life for vengeance because it's all they have left.

Whumpee has a powerful sense of justice, and constantly feels a sense of "wrongness" about the way things are. It's always there, gnawing at the back of their mind.

Caretaker is going to help them get revenge.

Caretaker finds whumpee bound and gagged, unable to move and whimpering for their attention. Caretaker skids to their knees and pulls whumpee into their arms.

Whumpee, with their arms behind their back, can only press their face hard into caretaker's shoulder.

the best part of a whump fic, to me, is the moment that caretaker realizes that something is wrong with a whumpee who was trying to hide it/fight through it. after hours or even days of not understanding why whumpee has been acting so strangely, it finally clicks. whatever emotions were there before--confusion, irritation, etc.--are immediately and completely replaced by intense concern. THAT'S the peak for me. where the magic happens. you can literally never go wrong with that moment.

When the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger and the mask slips, it's great.

But when the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger, and the mask DOESN'T slip.

Because they understand they need to be calm and unflappable now more than ever; if it protects them, it will certainly protect the person they care about. So their voice doesn't waver, their hands don't shake. They don't panic. From the outside looking in, they're as calm as could be. They handle it.

But after it's over-when the person they care about is safe, and the unflappable character is alone-they completely shatter. Gasping breaths, sobs, barely holding it together because someone they love almost DIED, and it was far, far too close for comfort.

(Optional: Character that they care about finds them in this state and comforts them.)

What are some things you wish you saw more of in lady whump?

ooooh i love this question <3 mostly i would love to see more comfort by someone who isn't a male love interest!! so much lady whump is just hetero romance woman in peril which is great if that's what you like, nothing wrong with it, but i don't vibe. give me platonic lady&lady hurt/comfort!

other tropes i love that i don't see enough for ladies:

ladies who are unpleasant when they're injured/ill. crabby, mean women who are crabbier and meaner please

false recovery. things are starting to look better, then take a nose dive really quickly before anyone knows what's happening. i looooove that trope.

wound complications. infections, hard healing journeys, etc. a lot of time women's injuries are barely a blip on the radar. STRETCH EM OUT.

lady leaders/captains! collapsing from exhaustion! crumbling under pressure! we see effortless lady captains but rarely complicated ones. give me tired lady captains who are disillusioned and bored! lady captains who don't think they should be leading! women who don't WANT to be leading! women who found out this is harder than they thought and are pushing themselves really hard and suffering the consequences!

i really love a good "how have you been walking around like this?", especially from a rival or a gruff mentor. whether it's a concussion or a high fever, it's always satisfying to see someone torn between being impressed at how far they've made it in this state and angry at them for pushing so hard.

Whump Prompt #1352

Whumptober #1: Search Party

Let me set the scene.

It's dark out, and a frigid cold has set in. An icy rain hammers across the land, soaking your whumpee to the bone. They're frozen to the core; shivering terribly as they lay crumpled in the muddy ditch. They got dumped hours ago. Their body is slowly giving up, and their hopes of a rescue dwindle with every raindrop. At least the canopy of trees offers some respite, but as the night deepens and their blood seeps from their wounds they know they're in trouble. 

At the other end of the forest, just as lightning begins to streak across the sky and thunder rolls between the clouds, the search party sprints into the undergrowth. Well, it’s not so much of a party and more of a small gathering - just those who were present when the news of the whumpee’s drop-off location arrived. They know they don’t have long, so with just their flashlights and raincoats, the team fan out, calling desperately for the whumpee as their dim beams of light barely illuminate the ground in front of them. 

Perhaps the whumpee tries to claw their way out of the ditch. Maybe the rainwater begins pooling underneath their bloody body. Maybe they hear their rescuers but cannot call out… 

How long can they hold out for before they succumb to the bloodloss, or cold? Do they also contract a cold from their ordeal, making recovery even more miserable? 

June of Doom Day 2

"Get in"

I'm tryna get in all the prompts every time but this one was hard. I'm doing my best though.

Whumpee hadn't said a word since Caretaker had fallen dead on the floor before them. Whumper had put a knife through them. It still sat there, wedged in their back, and it was all Whumpee could stare at. They just stared as tears slid down their cheeks.

Whumper had been delighted.

"Don't you see Whumpee? It's just you and me now. They can't take you away from me."

Whumpee had just sobbed.

Whumper had left the room shortly after, leaving Whumpee chained to the wall, just too far away from Caretaker's unmoving form to do anything more than stare and cry. They were a mess now. Snot and tears smeared all over their face. But they couldn't stop crying.

Caretaker was dead.

Whumper returned eventually and ignored Whumpee entirely as they dragged Caretaker's body out to the waiting car and shoved it into the boot.

They returned to Whumpee, crouching down in front of them to unlock the chains.

"Come on," they said, pulling Whumpee gently along by the wrist. Whumpee didn't resist. They followed Whumper out to the waiting car but froze when Whumper tried to nudge them into the back seat.

"Get in."

Whumpee shook their head.

"Get in Whumpee, before I lose my temper."

"No, please." It was barely more than a whisper, but Whumper heard.

"None of that now Whumpee, get in."

"Kill me instead."

"What?"

"Kill me instead, just wake up Caretaker. Please." Whumpee fell to their knees.

"Oh don't be ridiculous, get in the car."

When Whumpee only responded with a sob, Whumper grabbed their arm roughly and shoved them in. They landed on the floor of the car and the air knocked from their lungs.

"I told you to get in. Now be quiet or I'll gag you."

Whumpee just sobbed again, curling into a ball in the foot space.

Whumper got in and drove off. By the time they'd buried Caretaker's body in the woods and returned to their home, Whumpee's wretched sobs had quieted to raspy breaths.

Whumpee didn't object when they were dragged from the car and into the house. They didn't even object when Whumper sat them on the countertop and pulled off their shirt. There was dark bruising forming where they'd hit the floor of the car.

Whumper sighed. "See, this is what happens when you disobey me. Caretaker's gone. There's really no reason for you to be so difficult."

Whumper wiped the tears from their face and carefully applied a salve to the bruising, muttering about how grateful Whumpee should really be, about how happy they were going to be now that Caretaker was gone, but Whumpee didn't answer, they just stared off into space, only seeing that bloody knife handle sticking out of Caretaker's back.

June of Doom Day 3

"I can handle it"

I went for Hero-Villain whump this time cause that's the shit. I want to do some villain-caretaker stuff but the prompts didn't really fit. Perhaps tomorrow!

Hero had fought their captors from the moment they'd woken. They'd thrashed and punched and tore at the guards who'd restrained them and dragged them towards the warehouse.

The guards were stronger than them though, and they hadn't achieved much by the time they were unceremoniously dumped on the ground in front of Villain.

"Villain," they spat. "I should have known this was you. Couldn't wait for our next fight, huh? Had to snatch me off the street."

Villain shrugged. "I didn't order you brought here Hero, I just came to watch the show."

"What-" Hero was cut off by the chuckle of Supervillain, who was now making their way across the bloodstained concrete floor towards them.

"You think Villain would have organised something like this? That's sweet," they said, crouching down before Hero.

Hero jerked forward, aiming to headbutt Supervillain. They missed. And Supervillain just laughed again, standing.

"No need for that Hero. I'm going to need you to be cooperative. You're going to tell me how to kill Superhero."

Hero spat at him. "I'll never tell you anything, torture me all you want."

"Oh, I will, don't worry. I didn't expect you to give in so easily."

Hero smirked, pushing the last of the rope off their hands. They hadn't tied them very well. "I won't be giving in at all."

They lunged, going for the nearest guard, snatching his blade and holding it to the man's throat.

Villain started, but Supervillain stopped them.

"I can handle it."

Villain nodded and stepped back as Supervillain approached Hero.

"You think I care if you kill him? You're not going to escape that easily Hero."

Before they could even register what had happened, the guard was falling, dead, to the ground, Supervillain's own knife lodged in his eye. Hero jumped back, still holding the blade. But they were still slow from being knocked out, and Supervillain disarmed them with ease, throwing them to the ground.

"Can't be having any more of that nonsense now, Hero. Guess I'll just have to find a more permanent way of restraining you."

And with that, Supervillain brought their foot down on Hero's forearm. The crack was so loud it could be heard over Hero's scream.

Villain turned to leave just as Supervillain crouched to break Hero's other arm.

They climbed into their car to the symphony of screams and sobs coming from within the building.

I have read fanfics I would pay to have bound into books and keep them on my bedside table.

listen up I need to talk about characters in pain alone. a fighter who won their most recent match but who goes home alone to a crappy little apartment where they're lucky if they manage to make some ramen before they pass out on the couch, only to wake stiff with bruises in a few hours. a vigilante who loses to the villain and gets left on a rooftop to pick themself up and try to stagger home without getting found, arrested, or passing out in their costume. the new member on a team who gets the dirtiest, hardest jobs as an initiation and who can't admit to anyone that they're breaking under the pressure because all their teammates will hear is weakness.

I need characters pasting bandages on injuries with trembling fingers as their vision blurs. I need characters desperately trying to haul themselves up just one more stair so they can stagger to their front door. I need characters who make it through that door only to collapse right behind it, watching the light in their bathroom blur and fade before they can get to their first aid kit. I need characters passing out in alleyways only to wake up hours later and know they still have to try to make it home on their own because they think they have no one to call.
