In the comics, he developed his own hologram technology which could completely change the appearance of a vehicle, and on his character card he’s stated to be a polyglot. It’s hard telling what kind of IQ hides under that Mad Max/metalhead exterior. Seems like he’s shooting a little low being the leader of a mercenary biker gang, but maybe he prefers a low profile for whatever reason.
I wish we got to see more of Zartan's scientific exploits. Besides the synthoids, a few random scenes like this, and the real appearance of his swamp hideout, we get pretty much nothing

-Cobra Commander takes up knitting and stabs someone for insulting his handiwork. (Granted, his Joe voodoo dolls are truly hideous, as are his sweaters...)
-Snake Eyes gets tired of always wearing the same mask and goes to a costume store. He freaks out random Joes with his new selections.
-Storm Shadow, missing the tastes of home, just can’t seem to find a decent Japanese restaurant. He’s never been one for cooking, but he decides to whip up a dish himself. (You decide whether this results in success or failure.)
-Zartan leaves Cobra to seriously pursue a career as a rock star. He finds out he’s actually better at girl pop, instead, and unexpectedly becomes a new sensation. (Bonus: The Dreadnoks, realizing they’ve lost their leader to legions of adoring fans, decide to put a stop to this. But one of them becomes a fan themselves.)

Look at those eyes. Zartan definitely radiates cat energy.
And it’s always been my headcanon that he’s more of a cat person than a dog person, which makes him the odd one out among the Dreadnoks. Most of the gang are definitely dog people.

After My Post About Zartan Being a Cat Person, I’m Cooking Up a Little Something for AO3
I’ve been missing my sister’s cats and need to get back into writing again, so this is the perfect opportunity.
Can’t guarantee it will be very long (it will probably be more a vignette than anything), but it’s an old headcanon I developed with my sister back when I would obsess over comic characters with her, and I’m feeling very nostalgic lately.

(Oh, and @radarsdomain, I would love to see your drawing of Zartan when you’re done. Glad I could give you some inspiration!)
Even the ones from the same media barely get along. Have you seen the mess that is Cobra high command?
Hmm…just picturing Zartan and Boba Fett both working for Cobra. That would get interesting. (As much as I like to picture my boy Boba being better than that, let’s be real. He worked for Jabba the Hutt, and he worked for the Empire. He would probably follow the money and the challenge. Unless…he saw G.I. Joe as being the force of order. It really depends on who is writing him.)
I get the feeling the two would have a grudging respect for each other, much like Boba Fett does for Han Solo, as both are very competent in their areas of expertise, but Fett would be less than impressed by the Dreadnoks. Not sure how Fett would respond to Zartan impersonating him. He doesn’t seem to take too kindly to that. (Twin Engines of Destruction, anyone?)
Man, I kind of want to write that as a fic now…Fett would be a bit like Destro in a way, a villain but a man of honor. I could see him being more loyal to Destro than the Commander in the long run. Maybe in that AU, Destro’s family did business with Jango prior to his death? Maybe Destro’s family is to the Fetts in this universe what Jabba the Hutt was in the Star Wars universe. Being on retainer for MARS industries would explain where the Fetts get all those fancy toys.
It would be fun seeing a plot where Cobra Commander and Destro pitted Zartan and Boba Fett against one another, much like how Jabba and his family would pit their bounty hunters against each other from time to time.
Oooh, and instead of Jedi hunters, Jango and Boba are ninja hunters. Or mutant hunters if I wanted to bring some of my DC/Marvel baddies into this.

Zartan and Snake Eyes would both be fiercely independent strays who come and go as they please. Zartan and his fellow strays fight dogs, while Snake Eyes is more a rat and snake killer. Among their most serious fights which result in the most injuries are their turf wars with each other.

Rough Sketch of Zartan’s Cat
Meet Ozzy, Zartan’s rough, semi-feral cat. This original feline character has been causing chaos in my head for a while now, and it was a lot of fun finally putting him on paper in some form. And it always helps to have a visual representation while writing!
I drew Ozzy with brush pens and a white Jellyroll pen for added details. I had initially pictured him as primarily black in color, and hoped to capture all the shades from both a reference photo and one of my furry nephews’ fur. Ozzy had other ideas, though, and turned out slightly more brown than anticipated, but I like it. (Also tried to capture the white fur on the scar, but it didn’t quite turn out how I’d hoped. I would do it differently next time.)
In any case, drawing this rebellious scruff-ball was a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to writing about him and Zartan.
He’s beautiful. I don’t even care if he’s just lip-synching!

I was just telling my coworker who I’ve introduced to GI Joe media about the Fury Force comic. (He’s an action figure collector who thought they were cool but didn’t really know much about any of the characters he was buying.) I didn’t realize that the women were only included in vehicle packs initially or that Hasbro thought villains wouldn’t sell. The villains are my favorites!
I think Cobra Commander would be an interesting opponent for Nick Fury. The guy simply doesn’t fight fair, and always has at least five tricks up his sleeve. Depending on the continuity, he likes to play weak so his enemies underestimate him, and then once they become too confident, the fangs come out. (Granted, the weakness he preys on in others is very often a reflection of his own. He can become too cocky, as well.) I would definitely pay to see it, to be sure.
I can’t imagine the Dreadnoks being able to face off against Nick Fury for more than five minutes, but I’d like to think Zartan would put up a decent fight. The guy canonically has ninja training, is a world-class infiltrator, and has held his own against Snake Eyes in some continuities. Sure, a lot of the Cobras wouldn’t hold up, but give the man some credit where it’s due!

There’s no way Cobra Commander can beat Nick Fury, Fury would own him in a sad. Hell any one else in Cobra would fare better against Nick than CC (even Doctor Mindbender) Speaking of GI Joe and Fury, from the G.I. Joe: ARAH Wiki
Prior to G.I. Joe’s relaunch in 1982, Larry Hama was developing an idea for a new comic book called Fury Force, which he was hoping would be an ongoing series for Marvel Comics. The original premise had the son of S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury assembling a team of elite commandos to battle neo-Nazi terrorists HYDRA. Shooter approached Hama about the Joe project [Hasbro wanted Marvel to do a story for their G.I. Joe toys] due to Hama’s military background, and the Fury concept was adapted for the project. Shooter suggested to Hasbro that “G.I. Joe” should be the team name and that they should fight terrorists, while Archie Goodwin invented Cobra and the Cobra Commander; everything else was created by Hama. Hasbro was initially uncertain about making villain toys, believing this wouldn’t sell. Marvel would also suggest the inclusion of female Joes in the toyline, and to include them with the vehicles (as Hasbro again worried they wouldn’t sell on their own).
And now you know.
Zartan, correcting his boss’s mistakes and averting catastrophe.
He and Destro both deserve a raise.
At least the Commander is more polite to Zartan than he is to Destro. Zartan might actually get the pay raise he deserves, providing the Dreadnoks don’t mess things up.
