Formatting - Tumblr Posts

I need some help!

I wrote a guide booklet on safe psychedelic use, harm reduction, and the importance of scientific literacy — I plan to make this free or as affordable & accessible as possible.

Text alone it is currently about 45 pages, but may double with charts, graphics, etc.

I’m looking for someone proficient in Formatting & Graphics!

Preferably with experience in the zine realm for the skill of formatting a guide.

This is a volunteer project though credit will be given if desired!

Guidebook needs to be in PDF & PNG forms, but there’s literally no rush at all to get this done, no deadline, and I like to assume I’m laid back and easy to work with haha.

Reach out if interested! Thank you!

How To Use Emoji on AO3

I’ve seen excitement about the option to use emoji on ao3, but also confusion as to how it works.

The first and easiest way is to

Option 1) copy the emoji into your text/comment box on AO3

You can do this from anywhere in your browser, but here’s the Full Unicode Emoji List to see all your options in one place.

Option 2) type the character code for your emoji into your text/comment box on AO3

You need the unicode for your emoji (see list), then use the following rule:

Character codes may be specified after ampersand (&) and the number sign (#), and are followed by the semicolon (;). […] Preceding zeros may be omitted. If the input is in hexadecimal, the number is preceded by an “x”. (source: wikipedia)

Example:

The unicode for 😍 is “U+1F60D” (Full Unicode Emoji List)

So you first write “&#x”, then add the hexadecimal code “1f60d” and then end the expression with a semicolon “;”, which gives you “😍”

“😍” = 😍

For emojis you use a lot, you’ll probably remember the code fairly quickly.

There’s also always the trusty heart:

“♥” = ♥

Happy writing and commenting! 😘

Personally I love books that put the footnotes at the bottom of the page instead of at the end of the book so that I don’t have to keep flipping back and forth like an absolute barbarian

[ Live Example | My AO3 Skins ]

While AO3 has a way to click to see notes at the end, this tutorial is how you can not only have your viewers click to view certain notes, but also click back to where they had been reading before. We don’t even need to use a workskin for this, but just an implementation of simple anchor links. So whether you have a lot of references in your work or just want to let your inner Pratchett* loose, this is how you do it.

Dear anyone who hates Aptos...

I have an easy fix for you that doesn't involve fighting with the back ends of MS Word's settings. In Word, open the design tab, click font, and then select Office 2013-2022 from the drop-down menu: this changes your entire document fonts (including headings) into the previous default formatting.

This works on pre-existing documents too.

Hope this helps!

Dear Anyone Who Hates Aptos...

PS. In the 'design' tab, you can select the 2013-2022 default as a format - this doesn't change font: just layout and colours :)

Dear Anyone Who Hates Aptos...

PPS. THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW ABOUT AUTOMATIC REFERENCING IN WORD TERRIFIES ME. You don't have to type out APA references, just use the tool in word, it makes the reference list for you. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/create-a-bibliography-citations-and-references-17686589-4824-4940-9c69-342c289fa2a5 It's not as good as the likes of EndNote or Zotero but it's decent enough to save your grade in a high school project.

Formatting Your Manuscript

Formatting Your Manuscript

Formatting your Manuscript

If you’re planning on one day turning your manuscript in to literary agents and publishing houses, you need to make sure it’s formatted correctly. In many cases, your manuscript will be skipped over if it isn’t done to industry standard, so here’s the basics that you’ll need if you don’t want to be ignored. Before I get started, please know that this is aimed specifically at fiction manuscripts. If you’re writing non-fiction or a memoir, the expectations will be different, so it would be wise to Google what you need.

The Basics

Make sure your font is 12 point Times New Roman, Courier New, or Arial. These are the only three fonts you are allowed to pick from.

Your spacing should be 1 inch on all sides of the text. This is the default on most word processors, but double check your settings just to be sure.

Your text should be double spaced.

All of your indentations must be a half inch. Do not press indent. Instead, drag over the top arrow on the ruler to have every new paragraph automatically indent.

The Title Page

The top left-hand corner of your title page will have all your personal information. They want to see your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, the novel’s genre, and word count.

image

Your novel’s title is allowed to be between 20-24 point font if you want. Bold is also an option, but not necessary.

The title will appear halfway down the title page.

“A novel by [your name]” will be about three quarters of the way down the page.

The Next Pages

If you have a dedication, it will be on its own page.

If you have some sort of verse or quote, those will also need their own pages.

Do not include a page for acknowledgements.

The Chapters

Chapter titles will be 12 point font. No bolding or italics.

Chapters will start from one quarter to halfway down the page.

An easy way to format chapter headings is to press enter five or six times

Make sure you always start your chapters the same way every time.

When you start a new chapter, make sure you use a page break to bump the new chapter onto a new page. This will keep it in place so that it will never budge, no matter how much you cut out or add to the previous chapter.

Page Numbers

Page numbers will start with 1 on Chapter 1 of your manuscript. Page numbers will not appear on the title page or dedication page.

Page 1 will be labeled in the footer of Chapter 1. It should be centered.

Page 2 will be in the header of the next page.

From page 2 onward, your headers will be labeled like this:

image

If you insert a section break after the title and dedication pages, it will make it easier to insert the page numbers.

For the most part, this is the most important of what you’ll need to know for formatting your manuscript. I used this video as reference, so I’m trusting everything it says is true because it was made by an author who has several novels published, and because it was uploaded this year, it should be up to date.

But just remember, whenever you go to turn in a manuscript, make sure you check the website of the agent or publisher you’re trying to contact. They might have specifications that differ with the ones stated in this video, and you should always do whatever you can to abide by what they want.
