One day I came home from work and found Theresa stewing in anger at the kitchen table. Some of the lesbians from a newly formed group on campus had mocked her for being a femme. They told her she was brainwashed.
“I’m so bad,” Theresa thumped the table. “They told me that butches were male chauvinist pigs!”

I knew what male chauvinist meant, but I couldn’t figure out what it had to do with us. “Don’t they know we don’t deal the shit, we get shit on?”

“They don’t care, honey. They’re not going to let us in.”

“Should Jan and Grant and Edwin and I go to one of these meetings and try to explain?”

Theresa put her hand on my arm. “It won’t help, honey. They’re very angry at butches.”

“Why?”

She thought about the question. “I think it’s because they draw a line—women on one side and men on the other. So women they think look like men are the enemy. And
women who look like me are sleeping with the enemy. We’re too feminine for their taste.”

“Wait a minute,” I stopped her. “We’re too masculine and you’re too feminine? Whatdya have to do, put your index fingers in a meter and test in the middle?”

Theresa patted my arm. “Things are changing,” she said.

“Yeah,” I told her, “but sooner or later they’ll change back.”

“Things don’t change back,” she sighed, “they just keep changing.”

I slapped the table. “Then fuck those people. Who needs them, anyway?”

Theresa frowned and played with my hair. “I need the movement, Jess. And so do you. Remember you once told
Leslie Feinberg Uses The Term "he-she" To Describe Hirself Through This Section Of The Book And Discusses

leslie feinberg uses the term "he-she" to describe hirself through this section of the book and discusses taking hormones with the other butches at multiple points throughout. at the time, "butch" included everything from masc lesbians to he/him lesbians to outright trans men.

events quickly progress from calling butches and femmes brainwashed to kicking butches out of meetings and bars for being gender traitors. hir decision to start HRT was so controversial in separatist lesbian circles that it ended zir long-term relationship.

“I’ve been trying to tell you what I’ve been wrestling with lately, but you haven’t wanted to talk about it.” I shrugged. “I can’t go on much longer without something changing.”

Theresa sighed. “I’m a femme, Jess. I want to be with a butch. And I’m starting to feel like part of the women’s movement, even though I can’t be all the parts of who I am at the same time. My world’s expanding.”

“Great,” I snorted. “Mine’s shrinking. But the hormones are like the looking glass for me. If I pass through it, my world could open up, too.”

Theresa shook her head. “I don’t want to be with a man, Jess. I won’t do it.”

“I’d still be a butch,” I protested. “Even on hormones.”

this was the impact of a separatist feminist movement on queer icon leslie feinberg, who suffered immensely from the hostility of the queer community toward zirself and the ensuing isolation and lack of community support. because denying queer people access to their community is a death sentence. zie went on to write stone butch blues about this oft-ignored and maligned branch of the queer family.

we know that transandrophobia exists. one of the most important landmark queer texts discusses it extensively. we know that separatist rhetoric harms every single member of the queer community with a connection to masculinity (A LOT OF US). we have been on this merry-go-round before, and we already know it sucks. let's not go around again. let's get off

Isn't it funny how the whole concept of the punk rock movement was to escape stereotypes and labels and to promote the inclusivity of all people and the lovely things that make them different?

Yet, in the process... they labeled themselves, afflicted themselves with one of the most crippling stereotypes and became one of the most non inclusive and gatekeeping groups of all time. Most punk rockers spend more time debating what the definition of "punk" is, and kicking those out of the scene who don't fit their own personal definition, than they do actually chasing their own ideals.

And it's sad. I love the punk rock movement in concept... but the reality is very different.

In my studies and observations, I feel that punk was never about fighting for one specific thing. Punk was about radical individuality and accepting yourself the way you are. It was about fighting the system. It was about bonding together over music and fashion and culture so tightly that they could never break us apart. Yes, punk is a political movement, but it's not just about ONE political belief. It wasn't about what you believed but rather HOW you believed it.

The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were both right wing bands. The Clash was left wing. There's videos of punks from the eighties, the OGs, talking about being conservative and fighting for right wing politics. And in actuality, the whole idea was built on Anarchy anyway, not this dividing, ostracizing, black and white mindset that modern day American politics uses to turn us against each other and make us weak.

Are you fighting for what you believe in? Are you out there being bold and raising hell and never compromising or selling out? Fighting for the greater good of humanity, whatever that is to you? That's punk rock to me. Unfortunately, the new generation of punk rockers doesn't see things that way. Which is alright with me, I suppose. The title isn't worth enough to me to argue with my brothers and sisters over it. I'm just here to rock out and throw up the finger at the Man.

I never wanted the labels anyway.

In summary, punk's not dead. Just confused.

Yeah, I’m waiting for someone to brush this off with the ol’ “it’s all simply because game characters represent the people who play the games.” Sure. It’s not like black or hispanic people play, right? Women definitely don’t play at all. Or kids! It’d be insane to have younger characters because that sure as hell wouldn’t be a fair representation! Or the obese, disabled etc. Ugh.

It couldn’t be that the game developers make the games for themselves and their cis-white-male buddies regardless of who wants to play, could it?

A montage of 40 suspiciously similar looking male video game protagonists featured at #E3 in 2014.

I am the biggest gatekeeper. I never tell my favorite bands, artists, or youtubers to people in real life. Like, that's MY escape. That youtuber is MINE. It makes my blood boil to see someone in real life enjoy the same stuff as I do, yet I want friends with the same interests.

The Gatekeeping Within The Alt Community Is Getting Ridiculous. Some Of Yall Are Literally Bullying Each

The gatekeeping within the alt community is getting ridiculous. Some of y’all are literally bullying each other for slightly different styles of clothing, listening to certain bands/artists, and/or being part of different subcultures. It’s disgusting and hypocritical. Hating on anything new doesn’t make you cool. Hating on anything “mainstream” doesn’t make you cool either. You can be alt and like different things. E-KIDS ARE ALT WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. We really have to stop hating on every new subculture. Y’all did the same thing to emos in the early 2000’s. Some of y’all STILL do. Fashions change. Trends change. Styles change. Grunge isn’t going to be the same as it was in the 90’s. Get over it. Most of us weren’t even alive in the 90’s. We have no right to tell modern grunge kids that they have to dress the way 90’s grunge kids did. Stop telling kids that they can’t be goth and like Hello Kitty or whatever. THEY CAN LIKE WHATEVER THEY FUCKING WANT. And lastly, gatekeeping poc NEEDS TO STOP. POC can be alt if they want to. They do NOT have to straighten their hair to be emo. You do NOT have to be pale-skinned to be goth. #gatekeeping #gatekeepingsucks #gatekeepingistrash #alt #alternative #altfashion #altgirl #alternativefashion #altcommunity #gatekeepingwhithinthealtcommunity #ekid #ekidz #ekids #egirl #egirlaesthetic #egirlmakeup #egirls #egirlhair #emo #emogirl #grunge #grungetattoos #grungeaesthetics #grungeaesthetic #grungefashion #goth #gothkids #gothgirl #gothaesthetic #gothmakeup https://www.instagram.com/p/CKSrE_YpGlW/?igshid=76ncckpuiyyk

Omnisexual people  are attracted to those of all gender identities and sexual orientations. Omnisexuality is in the category of multisexuality , which includes people who are attracted to more than one gender.

Graysexual — sometimes spelled greysexual — is used to refer to people who experience limited sexual attraction. In other words, they experience sexual attraction very rarely, or with very low intensity. This is also known as gray-asexuality, gray-A, or gray-ace.

What does intersex mean? Intersex is a general term used for a variety of situations in which a person is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn't fit the boxes of “female” or “male.” Sometimes doctors do surgeries on intersex babies and children to make their bodies fit binary ideas of “male” or “female”.

Demisexual people only feel sexually attracted to someone when they have an emotional bond with the person. They can be gay, straight, bisexual, or pansexual, and may have any gender identity. The prefix “demi” means half — which can refer to being halfway between sexual and asexual.

Pansexuality is the attraction to people regardless of their gender. Pansexual people are sexually attracted to people of every gender identity. People of any gender identity can and do identify as pansexual.

Non-binary or genderqueer is an umbrella term for that are neither male nor ‍female —‌identities that are outside the gender binary .

Agender is a term which can be literally translated as without gender. It can be seen either as a or as a statement of not having a gender identity.

Bisexuality is romantic attraction , sexual attraction or sexual behavior toward both males and females, or to more than one gender or sex  .

Asexual is the lack of sexual attraction to others, or a low interest in sexual activity. Some people consider asexuality to be their sexual orientation, and others describe it as an absence of sexual orientation.

Polyamorous people have multiple loving, intentional, and intimate relationships at the same time. Polyamory is a type of open or non-monogamous relationship that follows certain guidelines. Polyamory specifically refers to people who have multiple romantic relationships at the same time.

Long, negative rant under the cut. Can't get it out of my head and not sure what else to do with it so...

Keep seeing gatekeeping style posts because of a singular person I follow. And yeah I could just... unfollow but then all the reasons I followed in the first place (gif sets btw) go with them. And I'm not in disagreement with what's being said but for the love of all that is deep fried and cheesy does it give me anxiety and fill my brain cage with shit I don't wanna think about.

Basically its pedo gatekeeping in fandom which yeah 100% that is gross and ick and all that. Even the examples they point to as being the basis of their case are cringe af and I want no association with those things.

But that's just part of fandom now isn't it?

Yeah a lot of the argument is that its grown adults making weird pregnancy fics/shorts about underage characters (canonically 14) and that's wrong on so many levels. But they only bring up the bad examples...

What about those of us with 20k+ think pieces exploring the hormonal aspect of being a teenager in highschool dealing with setting up the rest of your life, navigating relationships of all kinds, and trying to figure out what suddenly clicked in the back of your mind to make Becky from Spanish class so bloody attractive? Those of us who are putting thought and effort before the smutty parts? The ones writing cautionary tales of rushing intimacy, getting lowkey addicted to that rush, and coming to regret it once you realize that person just isn't right for you?

Are we also the bad guys for writing teenagers like teenagers? Are we going to the stake for making realistic when we discuss and acknowledge how bad it is for an adult to be romantically involved with a minor? Yes, we still get horny over these taboo subjects and relationships but what if we're actively acknowledging it in the fic as we write?

Why gatekeep when the people you want to shame are never going to shame? All that kind of gatekeeping does is scare those with a conscious off from writing their favorite characters (underage or not) in these situations. The whole point of fiction as a genre is to explore every aspect of the human condition and that includes the taboos, the ick.
