Representation - Tumblr Posts

Helloooooo yet again!! Thank you for the big amount of notes it may not seem like a lot to some people, but for me I am very grateful for them. Anyways, on the topic of writing, in the current story I’m doing I’ve decided to make my characters relatable and representable for certain communities, but not to the point that is unrealistic and harmful to the readers. So here are a few characteristics for specific characters and feel free to give feedback/criticism on how they should play out:

For my main character, Hideki, he’s a reserved and quiet guy who values his space and privacy and doesn’t really do well with making friends. He’s doesn’t have social anxiety or anything like that, but due to the unintentional negligence of his parents and the constant moving, he’s grown to be distant with others even his own sibling.

Next is Shun. Shun has ADHD and is in fact medicated for it. He occasionally has difficulty with multitasking and tends to get overwhelmed. His character is still on the works and yes I am doing my own research in the topic.

With Yui, she has separation anxiety due to her parents splitting up and her mom leaving her and her dad. She’s fine on her own, but when it comes to friends, the constant anxiety of them leaving her looms over her. It is later addressed in the story and the club tries to help her in anyway they can. The topic of separation anxiety will also be researched on and is important to learn.

This next character in the story doesn’t have much to do with mental health or anything of the sorts, but instead race. I’m remaking Kaito and making him a POC character either black or blasian, still in the works. I absolutely love how some POC characters are represented in shows such as Craig of the creek, That’s so raven, etc. Even in anime like Jjba, fire force, hunter x hunter, etc. It would be nice to have more POC characters represented rightfully and obviously as mentioned before, this topic will be researched and will be played out with diligence.

Anyways, that’s all the ideas I want to include in my story sorry for the long post lol. If needed please address anything that can be added to these characters or how they can be tweaked for better representation. Like mentioned before, the subjects covered will be researched and handled with the seriousness needed. Anyways, I’ll leave this here, good whatever time your reading this.

ah, don't mind me, just sobbing over here...

representation matters so so so very much♡♡♡

ES POR ESTO QUE LA REPRESENTACIÓN ES IMPORTANTE

THIS IS WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS

[trans]

Interviewer: Your speech and your mission have always been worthy representation and respect above all. Especially about equal opportunities for the "moreno" (brown) people, for racialised people, not only from Mexico but from all of Latin America, from all over the world. And now you're here. You're K'uk'ulkaan, you're Namor, you're a Funko (toy). You're all that.

Tenoch: Ah, huevo! (kinda like "oh, god" / "oh, yeah", happily)

Interviewer: So, what do you think it'll mean for representation in Latin America and Mexico, for all of us who are getting this important message?

Tenoch: The only thing I want is that the next time boys and girls look at themselves in the mirror they feel proud of that reflection. That they see there was never anything wrong with them but rather with the eyes that judged them. If that happens, I've made it.

Interviewer: Thank you so much.

(They hug. The interviewer's been rather emotional the whole time but now they start to really cry.)

Tenoch: It hurts, dude, doesn't it? But we're going to begin healing. (He gives the interviewer a kiss on the forehead)

If you've watched heartstopper season2 you know there's a major plotline revolving about isaac being aro/ace.

And I think it's super important because:

1. There is like no aro/ace rep in mainstream media. And if there is it's most likely used as a joke.

2. When there's good rep it's always sidelined (at least in media I've seen).

It took me so long to find out I was asexual because there was no character for me to relate to in that sense. This is a world surrounded by sex, because sex sells. Almost everything is sexualized and that's why it takes aro/ace people so long to find out or accept that they are aro/ace. If there was rep like this when I was still figuring myself out It wouldn't have hurt as much i wouldn't have hated myself. I wouldn't have hated that part of me if seen a positive depiction of asexuality.

Which is why it's great that we are finally getting the representation we deserve.

With representation like this more people will find out who they are. They'll know that nothing is wrong with them and that they shouldn't be scared to accept it.

It's a sign we're gonna get more great representation in years to come.

And I am so happy.

🖤💚

Fanships

It bothers me when people ship two characters just because they're attractive males and females. Especially when romance between them is hardly indicated.

It bothers me more when people hate on fanships that are queer, presumably for changing "canon." I'm sorry that we're so underrepresented in cartoons that we have to "change" characters just so that we can identify with them more. I'm sorry that we're so starved to see a fulfilling queer relationship that we have to invent things just to feel satisfied.

Wait, why am I sorry? Throw us a bone here, will ya?

Okay, now onward to little things that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. I also finally figured out the genre of game this would be and that's a social game.

I'll start with:

Cosmetics/Character customization

So, I'll start first with general cosmetics. I have a very strong itch to play a game where I can customize both my character and the house/room/plot of land they reside in without the game being either farm based, purely fashion based, typical gacha "wait 30 years or watch an ad", or just "anime" style with no other designs. Because of this, one of the first things I thought of was creating a separate mode where the players could customize a character to their liking, with their pronouns, and more than just "generic anime" hairstyles. There would obviously be generic anime hair styles, but there'd also be afro styles and other poc styles (I'd have to do some research on any other group outside of African though).

In the main mode, you wouldn't be able to chance the MC outside of her name. Her appearance would be locked kind of like Link or the Persona protags. Once you've played through a story and completed it with the MC, you'd be able to replay it as your customized character in the freeplay mode.

There would also be a place for the players to design their own apartment/house/plot of land (depending on what makes the most sense) and through the game's various mini-games, you'd be able to unlock items. Some items would be harder to get and would require playing a mini-game or going through some sequence properly to unlock something. We're going for replayability\(^▽^)/

Since I was thinking for this game to be FtP, I had to come up with something to still make money, but make it accessible for everyone to get everything in the game. So, it made sense to have the paid options be simply to speed things up or get extra of something in case someone is lazy as hell and doesn't want to replay something. However, the option to play it normally isn't a slog either, it's just like playing any game normally vs. cheesing the the area.

Also, I wanted to add this little note but I didn't know where, but I also really wanted this game to be interesting for gaymers as well. I do have family who happen to fall under that category so I have a little--just a tiny bit--of knowledge when it comes to that.

In this case, the game wouldn't be to catered to physical things at all. Obey Me! does a pretty good job keeping the MC gender neutral, but it has its limits and I'm going to push them as hard as I can! (pause) Being who I am, I don't really fit into any category very well as I don't like most traditionally girl things and I'm uninterested in most guy things, so almost all the time my characters interact romantically in a way that you could use any pronoun and it would work. I don't like the term handsome and most certainly do not think the words "pretty" "cute" or "beautiful" only describe women. Usually, my descriptors are general and describe the way someone's appearance makes you feel (ex. if someone has pretty eyes I'll usually just say their eyes are captivating or they're easy to get lost in.)

Events

I wasn't exactly sure what this would be considering I don't want to become an Obey Me! with bi-weekly events that drain your resources, but I also didn't want to make events that had items locked behind their event period and once they were gone, they were gone. I also know apart of the fun with events is working really hard to get something special, so if it's available all the time it wouldn't be very much fun. So, my fix for this was to dog tag a page from Obey Me!

They have it where after six months(?) events come back and the players have free access to participate again for four days so long as they have a consumable. I still don't want it to be exactly like that, so the easiest solution is just to have events rollback when their original date passes (ex. if there's an event during April, then April the next year, the events returns for the same amount of time). Simple and effective.

As for the events themselves. I actually tend to write a holiday special for the bois every year so the usual New Year's, Christmas, Valentine's, Halloween, and Thanksgiving would be celebrated, but I've always wanted to incorporate many celebrations from various places. Things like Mardi Gras which is a celebration that's pretty centralized in one place. Obviously, that would mean some research, but I already have most of the characters having different backgrounds (Brayleigh is French, Jessica is half Japanese/French, Ankara has Pacific Islander in him, Terumichi is Korean, Amai is half Black/Japanese, and Shugi is whatever I need him to be lol) so it'd be pretty easy to use their backgrounds and try and incorporate some festivals, holidays, and other special occasions in here!

And of course, the events would have special outfits for the boys to be dressed in, don't worry. You have no idea that a kimono Aki, demon Akuma, beach Koto, and casual Ankara live rent free in my head.

CGs/character art

I say this a lot, but I'll say it again, I can't draw; however, if I ever did find someone to work with, I'd have a lot of character CGs and just so things can stay as inclusive as possible, their character art would be anywhere between just solo art of the character in question or art with a character insert (maybe like a hand or something)

side note: the only reason I'm not too into having a character insert is because it feels generic and like it's almost impossible to account of every position with a certain hair style or skin tone. I know some games have done it, but they more or less prove my point. In this case, I think less is more.

The CGs more looked like just beautiful art of the character from a scene or of them in a stylized outfit. Being able to have a gallery full of each one would be a dream~

Other/Misc.

There's not a lot more I wanted to add, but some small things would be to have a challenge mode for each of the mini-games and achievements for random things.

This is just a off the cuff thought, but it'd be cute to have the overworld city somehow have online multiplayer where people could chat with other people in the city or play solo (since I am more of a solo player anyways).

Competitions kind of rub me the wrong way, but it'd be nice to have some rankings for the mini-games

I guess I'll add this part to the first reblog: I didn't want the game to have bad endings because they usually just making the player feel like shit for having an opinion, so it made more sense to have it like Phoenix Wright where you're playing the story as the MC and to have a separate freeplay mode where character's choice would matter. It might be too ambitious, but having the freeplay mode have different endings sounds interesting.

A small ex. would be in one of the short stories, Cassie is sick and Akihiko comes over to take care of her. The players would then have the option to reject him and see a different route play out, almost like a what-if scenario.

But, for now, that's all the ideas I feel I can share. If I come up with anything else I'll add it, but like always...

Thanks for reading multiple

🍂

Here again after my usual hiatus this time though it was because of real world shit, aka setting appointments to get my teeth removed yay but I wanted to post something.

So, just today (or yesterday it's 2am for me) I finished a page on my website about an idea I got about a game idea. This is pretty common for me, but I wanted to share it here in case anyone was interested :D

Anyways, here's a little preview and you can read the full thing here if you want.

Here Again After My Usual Hiatus This Time Though It Was Because Of Real World Shit, Aka Setting Appointments

Here Again After My Usual Hiatus This Time Though It Was Because Of Real World Shit, Aka Setting Appointments

I was also considering making proofs of concepts about some of the mini-games I talked about and other collectables, but who know if I'll get around to that with all the other ideas I have in my head.

Either way, that's the post~

Candice Patton as Iris West helped play a massive part in Kiersey and Zendaya being allowed to portray superhero love interests, and opened doors that would have been closed to them three years ago, when they wouldn’t have even been considered an OPTION.

Candice Patton as Iris West helped show execs that a WOC as a romantic lead is a smart decision. From their standpoint, it’s likely financial, but little black girls are going to be allowed to see themselves as the girl the hero loves, wants to be with, and get to see themselves being Important to the story.

One day, saltyass haters will realize that’s why Candice Patton as Iris West is needed, because she’s making a *difference* and one simple casting decision is shaking 50+ years of history for the better.

You Guys Ever Just Laugh So Hard That You Choke?

You guys ever just laugh so hard that you choke?

Have you ever choked on air?

AU art will be back soon. I just don't know what to draw of it and didn't want to leave my Tumblr dead.

I will never understand why y’all feel the need to address a young black girls skin color, just because she is not what you imagined as Annabeth, Annabeth and her skin color are two separate things, Leah sava Jeffries is very much aware she is not the described book “accurate” Annabeth Rick riordan originally wrote, but those books were written literally almost 19 years ago, Rick picked her, and yall need to leave her alone, stop mentioning her skin color everytime you see her on social media, she’s a person just like the rest of us. End of story.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but…

Dumbledore? Hmmm? Maybe Luna Lovegood as well? And… Perry the Platypus, maybe? He is a platypus, they don’t do much. Plus, there are some non-aros who code as ace— good ol’ Papyrus Undertale, for instance. Probably Spock. I think McGonagall might’ve been ace, she took a long time to get married, only did it once and never had kids (I looked all that up). Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanov, as well, even though Banner’s is sort of trauma induced, I think if Romanov wanted to have InTiMaTe ReLaTiOnS she could even if she couldn’t get pregnant. Lots of rep around if you look for it.

Okay so we might have very little to no official aro/ace/aroace representation in media BUT it doesn't mean there are none of them there. Wanna show a confused homie what it means to be aro/ace through media examples? Watch:

Bilbo Baggins. The absolute aroace legend. Spent half of his life vibing solo in a wonderful house and the second half having incredible adventures/traveling alone or with dwarf homies. Goals.

Po from Kung Fu Panda. Romance is broke, Kung Fu is woke. Living with a bunch of friends doing your passion/s together? What a dream. Not to mention the beautiful platonic brother/sister relationship Po has with Tigress. If you ever try to explain a platonic soul mate, say you want to have the type of friendship Po and Tigress do at the second movie. *mwah*

L from Death Note. Who needs sex or romance when you have such incredible mysteries going on in the world plus tons of sweets? Piorities people, priorities!

Jotaro Kujo is an asexual icon and that's a fact. Bro could have had half a population of girls from his school in his arms if he wanted to (and probably boys too, I mean, just look at him). Seems like he's more interested in dolphins than sex thoe.

Maui from Moana. You can only dream he's gonna fall in love for anything other than his muscles. And I think it's beautiful.

Hades from Disney's Hercules. What can be better than vibing your salty ass in hell with your adorable three headed dog to the tunes of screaming souls for eternity? Edgy aro goals.

If you have more to add: Go on! Let's make a list of aro/ace characters for future generations!

Why are people ashamed of writing fanfic? I just saw someone who is writing a fanfic for NanoWriMo - who has dedicated themselves to writing 50k words of fanfic this month - say that fanfic was their ‘secret shame’ on a forum entirely made up of fanfic writers.

And you know what? That’s not at all uncommon. I can’t even count the times I’ve seen fanfic disparaged as something for teenage girls or unworthy all together and I think I’ve finally worked out why. And the reason irks me just as much as the fact that this happens.

Fanfic is, by and large, written by women. It’s a creative voice that fills a void left in Hollywood as well as in publishing houses. Only 9% of spec scripts (for movies) sold between 2010 and 2012 were written by women. In 2010, 84% of the reviewers for the New York Review of Books were men and 83% of the books they reviewed were also by men. Female writers make up only 29% of TV staff jobs, a drop of 1.5% from last season, with things looking even bleaker for minorities, who hold only 13.7 percent of TV staff writer jobs. All of these facts add up to one thing - these days, writing is utterly dominated by middle aged, white men. They floods our televisions, our bookshelves, and our movie screens and sometimes we fall in love with the characters but maybe we don’t see the story we wanted told. So we write fic.

But do you know what I think? I think that shame comes from being bold enough to dare to have a voice. I think we’re viewing our own perspectives as somehow less, unworthy in comparison to the ‘norm’ of ‘real’ storytelling that we see validated by being put on television and movie screens and bookstore shelves. While we might, as a culture, tolerate such daring activity amongst teenage girls, we also view it as childish, something women are meant to outgrow, something shameful to hold onto as adults. But it isn’t just fanfic we’re shaming. It’s our voices, our validity, and that makes me sick.

So be a fanfic writer. Be the best goddamned fanfic writer you can be. Use your voice and be proud of it because it’s yours. There is nothing ‘less’ about fanfic. And there never will be.

Honestly one of the most painful and most beautiful things I’ve experienced has been growing up to view my idolized creators/books/movies/tv shows with more criticism. Like it’s so so painful to have someone you used to look up to be so transphobic. It’s so painful to see a tv show that you used to love so much being so homophobic.

And to sit here and realize. They’ve always been like that. Just because we’re grown up enough now to actually see it and call it out doesn’t mean that they used to be any better.

But for us as consumers of that content, it shows so much growth for us to be able to look at these shows and books and movies and say “it’s okay for me to still enjoy this content. But this thing you did, you said, you believe, is really fucked up and I don’t support you anymore”

And then to take this content, these worlds and characters that we love so much, and make it our own, with headcanons and fanfictions, with fanart and aus. To take back the pain that was inflicted upon us and make it right for ourselves and for others.

And throughout our own headcanons, still continuing to call out popular creators (authors, directors, actors, musicians, artists) and to hold them accountable.

It’s been an incredible transition to witness and experience.

Marcus from The Bear is great representation for neurodivergent people who use the fact that they're neurodivergent as a way to shield themselves from valid criticism when they've done something wrong. In turn, this allows them to exempt themselves from taking accountability for a situation they've knowingly caused using manipulative infantilization (whether intentionally or unintentionally), where they claim they've never been informed otherwise.
